Hot Summer Nights This year’s theme “Hot Summer Nights” is a tongue and cheek shout out to every outdoor event’s natural enemy – the weather. The logo is reminiscent of a vintage tattoo suggesting the idea of Decatur Celebration’s permanence and commitment in our community. The heart in the logo represents volunteers and attendees who are the festival’s lifeblood and have kept the passion alive for 29 year and counting. The crown hints at exciting new aspects of this year’s festival.

Band Together Wristbands are best described as a “cover charge” of sorts – allowing the general public to contribute towards all of the great free entertainment everyone can enjoy all weekend long at the festival. Yes, they are required in order to purchase food or beverages, but that’s not the main reason

for purchasing a wristband. The main reason to purchase a Country Financial “Band Together” Wristband is to support the Decatur Celebration and help us keep rockin’ for another 29 years! • Pre-sales available at local area Country Financial offices plus other

admission to the pageant is $7, with children 5 and under free.

Idaho Potato Tour The Big Idaho Potato Tour is coming to Decatur Celebration! The Big Idaho Potato Tour, better known as the “Tater Team”, travels throughout the U.S with their 6 ton potato to spread the word about the nutritional value of their Idaho Potatoes and raise awareness for the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women campaign. This massive potato would take more than 10,000 years to grow, 2 years and 9 months to bake, would easily make over 1,500,000 french fries, and it could make 30,325 servings of mashed potatoes. Yum pass the gravy! Be sure to check out this 6 ton potato on North St. all weekend long! Back Lot/21 Film Project Celebration’s Back Lot area will once again remain the focus of the festival’s visual artists, indie musicians and film fans. As in previous years, Land of Lincoln Credit Union’s 21 Film Project will host screenings in its airconditioned tent, including selections of winning films from 2008-2014, along with special previews of two new DC superhero TV shows, “Gotham” and “The Flash” on both Saturday and Sunday. Likewise, poster artist/painter Jon Griffin will once again be assembling a crew of Decatur’s finest visual artists to perform live painting demonstrations in the area. Celebration producer Lori Sturgill said The Back Lot would look relatively familiar to how it has in the past, with the stage having settled into a comfortable identity. “We’ve decided that we really like the way The Back Lot has been the last few years and we don’t want to change it much,” she said. “It’s like Celebration’s art district, sort of our cool, hip area.” One more returning feature will be the craft beer tent/booth run by Charlie McGorray. Despite the closure of the Decatur restaurant bearing his name this year, he’ll still be present and pouring craft brews. “I’m meeting with distributors tomorrow to work up the beer list and I’m excited to be back at the festival again,” McGorray said. Recycling Initiative Celebration’s recycling initiative enters its fourth year having grown much more accustomed to the task of dealing with the mountains of recyclable plastic, cardboard and paper produced by the festival. Producer Lori

Sturgill feels that the presence of recycling bins on the Celebration grounds has become an easily recognizable part of the layout. “It’s becoming a normal part of what you do at Celebration to find the blue Clearstream containers for cups and stuff,” she said. “We continue to tweak it every year. Last year was the first time we made a really concerted effort to get cardboard from our vendors, and we got a whole lot of cardboard because of that.” There will be one extra bit of incentive as well this year to use the Clearstream containers. According to Macon County Environmental Management Director Debra Hughes-Garrett, the containers are being affixed with posters made in local elementary schools as part of the organization’s Earth Day initiative. “We figure there’s no better way to teach adults than having their kids tell them the importance of recycling,” she reasoned. 4-H/University of Illinois Extension After the ending of longtime partnerships with the Macon County Fair, both the Macon County 4-H and University of Illinois Extension will have a combined presence on the Celebration’s Central Park Stage. In fact, in the words of Sturgill, “they’ll basically be doing a complete takeover on Saturday until 5 p.m.” Demonstrations and activities by both groups on Saturday will include a block party, robotics demonstrations, cooking demonstrations, science experiments and taste tests. The University of Illinois Extension will also be celebrating its 100th anniversary with a showing of cartoons through the years at 8:45 p.m. on Saturday. Pageant Also making the jump from the former Macon County Fair is the new “Macon County Queen” pageant run by Melissa Muirhead, which will take place Sunday at 2 p.m. in the Decatur Civic Center. Three age brackets up to 22 years old will be awarded, with a scholarship and other prizes donated by local businesses. As in the past, the winner will spend her year making appearances throughout Macon County and the state, and will be the official hostess of the 2015 Decatur Celebration, although she won’t be eligible to continue competing on the state level, as the pageant is now being operated outside the official county fair structure. Cost of

New Celebration Foods It seems quite likely that by the time Celebration weekend is over, one will have heard the phrase “deep-fried pork” at least once. New “pulled pork poppers” are a highlight on the list of new food items for the 2014 Celebration, and promise to be “BBQ pulled pork balled, rolled into batter and deep fried.” Joining the battered pork balls are a variety of new additions both sweet and savory: fried crab cakes, aguas frescas, bacon-topped donuts, roasted spicy corn, Olive Garden lasagna and “Celebration Snackers,” which are beef meatballs smoked with apple wood chips. Hot Dog Contest Also returning this year is the popular Heinkel’s Packing Co. Hot Dog Eating Competition, which has grown from a small stage in its first year to packed crowds on the Funfest Stage two years later. Last year saw a surprise entrant in the form of world-ranked eater Patrick “Deep Dish” Bertoletti, who defeated a five-person team of local media professionals by demolishing 40 hot dogs in 10 minutes. This year’s finals will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Saturday on the Funfest Stage, with entrants drawn in a different fashion than before—online video submissions. “It’s been a weird experience watching the videos, but we’re trying to engage in social media more as a company,” said company owner Wes Heinkel, who has been tasked with determining the competition’s entrants. “Having people post their videos online takes some guts, and I think it helps promote our brand to a younger generation even more.” First place prize for winning the competition is once again $500 in cash and four all-inclusive Cardinals tickets for a game in Sept. Heinkel, however, was mum on whether another professional eater would make an appearance. “I’m not at liberty to give that information,” he said. “Things are still in flux right now, so you’ll just have to show up to the competition.” Wine Garden Now in its fourth year, wine enthusiasts have found their home at Decatur Celebration,

nestled in the charm of Merchant Street. The Wine Garden offers a relaxing boutique atmosphere with plenty of seating and the smooth sounds of blues music playing on the nearby Cabaret Stage. Again, this year wine selections are expanded to include wines from across the country and around the world.

Decatur Celebration

t r e c n o C DC King & Queen Kick Off

Decatur Celebration hosts our favorite “undead” band for 2nd Annual Kick Off Concert on Thursday, July 31 at the Decatur Civic Center Arena. Concert at 7 pm | Doors open at 6 pm

Tickets can be purchased online via the Decatur Celebration website or by phone at 1-888-71TICKETS. Prices are $50 for Front Row, $40 for 2nd Row, $30 for

Main Floor Center, $25 for Main Floor Sides, $20 for Bleachers. You will be able to select your seat when purchasing with the exception of bleachers which are not assigned seats.

New to Celebration’s fundraising plans in 2014 is the King and Queen Campaign, which consists of five men and five women “utilizing their individual resources and creativity to raise funds toward their campaign to become King and Queen of the festival.” The man and woman who managed to raise the most funds will become festival VIPs, tasked with various duties during the Celebration such as becoming grand marshal of the Razzle Dazzle Goodtimes Parade and introducing festival headliners. Each contestant is responsible for conceiving and running their own fundraisers. Contestants for Queen include Land of Lincoln Credit Union’s Karalee Misner, Hickory Point Bank & Trust’s Misty Lee, Y103’s Shannon Mason-Cunningham, Decatur Public Schools’ Suzi Rotz

and Mowry Bakery’s Allison Mowry, the 2012 Miss Macon County Fair Queen. For the post of King, contestants include Hot 105.5’s Terrence Taylor, Country Financial’s Jeff Ludwick, Decatur Memorial Hospital’s Jeff Rounds, Decatur Public Schools’ Jonathan Downing and the City of Decatur’s Patrick Hoban. “They’ve been doing lots of funny things to raise their funds and compete with one another,” said Celebration producer Lori Sturgill. “John at Parsons School let his kids buy duct tape and then tape him to the wall. Jeff Ludwick did a date auction, and Terrence from Hot 105.5 is having a party at Katz. The winning King and Queen will get their own golf cart all weekend long to get around the festival, go to all the meet and greets and be treated as guests of honor.”
