2 2012 • 20 Under 40 the business journal

he Business Journal of MidCentral Illinois is proud to present this annual special publication to honor members of our community who make a difference in many ways. We realize it takes a special combination of individuals to make a difference in any community, but we wanted to take this opportunity to honor those under the age of 40 who are making a difference. The process wasn’t easy. We asked for nominations from the community and received an

overwhelming response. Each nominee was very impressive, and our selection committee had the daunting task of narrowing the field to 20. These selected individuals represent the best our community has to offer. From education, nonprofit, health care and more, our selections are from diverse backgrounds and offer many talents. Each 20 Under 40 has a unique story and offers his or her wisdom and advice on what it takes to be successful. You’ll read about what they do, what

they like about the community, what they still hope to accomplish and more. We hope you enjoy reading about these special individuals. Their profiles also can be found online at our website, www.thebusiness-journal.com. We would like to take this opportunity to thank those community members who were a part of the selection committee. We appreciate your hard work. For those of you who wish to nominate someone next year, look for our call for nominations in March 2013. •

Jennifer Bennett Age: 39 Family: Bruce, husband; and children Quinn (8), Ella (5) and Sophie (2).

Current position / responsibilities: Business analyst in the transportation department at Archer Daniels Midland Co.

What you like best about what you do: I spent several years in accounting before moving to bulk oil sales and then in to my current role. I am a “numbers” person at heart but a “people” person in the bigger realm. As a business analyst in the transportation department, I get the best of both worlds. I have the challenge of making sense of the vast amount of data available to us and the good fortune of working with a great group of people from a wide variety of business units and disciplines.

What you like best about working in the community: My husband and I were both born and raised in Decatur. Family is very important to us. With much of our family still in the area, we all have the opportunity to spend time together quite frequently. In addition, as a Decatur native, I enjoy being able to share my love of the community with people new to the area. I am fortunate to meet people from all over the world through my work at ADM. I love introducing them to all the great hidden treasures within our community such as Krekels and The Avon.

What should the community be doing to attract more young people to live and work in the area: I think we are moving in the right direction with the Grow Decatur initiative. We need a thriving economy that supports recreation, entertainment and robust retail in order to attract and retain young people in the Decatur area.

The person who has had the biggest influence on you and why: My parents, Jerry Pressley and Karen St. Pierre, have been the biggest influence in my life and still are. They have different personalities which resulted in the perfect environment for developing my siblings and me into well-balanced individuals. My dad is the strong-willed, independent, hard-working figure that taught me to believe in myself and to never, ever give up. My mom, my best friend, is the compassionate, selfless person who taught me the power of unconditional love. If I can become just half the person she is, I will have considered my life a success.

What you still hope to accomplish: Someday I’d like to train for and participate in a half marathon.

Your favorite stress reliever: Taking time to actually sit down and read my “Working Mother” magazine. It is comforting to read about all the other mothers out there also trying to manage a career and raise a family. I highly recommend this magazine to others who may sometimes doubt they are making the right choice of trying to juggle both.

Your favorite movie: “It’s a Wonderful Life.”

Your favorite book: “The Boxcar Children.” I loved this book when I was young and recently read it to my children. The story reminds us that the only thing in life we really need is each other.

Liz Adeola Age: 29 Family: Mostly in Mesa, Ariz. Current Position / Responsibilities: WAND anchor/reporter. I make sure people stay informed to what’s going on in Central Illinois. On the weekends I don many hats as an assignment editor, producer, webmaster and anchor. During the weekdays I go out in the field gathering stories from the community, writing and editing them. I even pick up a camera and shoot my own work every now and then.

What do you like best about what you do: I get to do something different every day and most of the time I’m not stuck in an office. I like meeting new people and learning their back-stories and this job gives me an excuse to be nosey.

What do you like best about working or living in the community: The people are friendly and I like nature. I grew up in the desert so when I got to Decatur I saw animals (like deer and raccoons) that I thought were only in the woods and the zoo. I also love seeing Lake Decatur during my morning commute. It reminds me of how amazing an artist God is.

What should the community be doing to attract more young professionals to live and work in the Decatur area: We need nice places to live, too. I think the toughest part for me when I moved out here was finding a nice apartment complex. There were not many listed on websites and it took a while before I found something good. That and I wish the 501 Club was still around or active. It can be hard for young professionals to network since there isn’t a big nightlife scene in town.

The person who has had the biggest influence on you and why: My mom, Arlene, and grandma, Wilola Willis. Both are examples of strong, independent women. My mom taught me to go after my dreams with no regrets and that there is no such thing as can’t. And my late grandmother was the epitome of a good and faithful servant to God. She taught me to put the Lord first and the art of telling a good story, listening and respecting my elders.

What you still hope to accomplish: I want to implement a service learning program like the one that gave me my first taste of community involvement. It was called the Junior Leadership League and was sponsored by the city. Speakers came to my middle school once a week and shed light on different topics like college preparedness, crime prevention, peer pressure, etc. On weekends, we volunteered in the community. It taught me a lot and made me take pride in my hometown.

Your favorite stress reliever: I just ask God for peace about certain things and he grants it. I also unwind at the end of the week with the Sunday Comics and a bubble bath.

Your favorite movie: “Coming to America” Yes, I know it’s not deep. I love it because I’ve seen it a million times and I still have the urge to watch it a million and one times more. Not sure how they pulled it off, but even after some 20 years that movie can still make me laugh till I cry.

Your favorite book: “The Best Little Monkeys in the World.” That was the first book I ever read and it began my long love affair with books.

Brittney McLaughlin Age: 31 Family: Tom, husband of almost eight years; Black Labs Agador and Sparticus (7 years old, adopted from the Animal Shelter in Lincoln) and Ollie (3 years old, adopted from Macon County Animal Control and Care Center.) Current position/responsibilities: I left the world of television advertising about a year ago and have devoted my time to an extensive west-end home renovation (which is now finished) and to serve the Decatur Macon County Animal Shelter Foundation. I am just one of MANY board members and volunteers who devote their time, their money and their heart to this cause. My focus is on community outreach to promote our message of Adopt, Donate, Volunteer.

What you like best about what you do: I love meeting people of all ages and vastly different backgrounds who can all come together to serve a common goal. Working with animals strengthens the connective tissue that makes us human — the desire to love and be loved unconditionally. Nowhere is that more evident than at the animal shelter. Children who have difficulty expressing themselves can find a friend, even if the language is unspoken. There have been high-schoolers with emotional/behavioral issues that find peace as they learn to trust animals and gain the animals’ trust. Others learn the rewards of discipline as animals are trained with basic obedience. And there are many who just come for the fun. Visit the cat colony and you’ll see what I mean.

What you like best about working or living in the community: Decatur is welcoming, accessible, active and giving. There are so many people to look up to and learn from in our community.

What should the community be doing to attract more young people to live and work in the Decatur area: Our leadership is on the right track with the lakefront redevelopment, the downtown improvements, Grow Decatur and the Education Coalition. One of the biggest misconceptions about our community is there is nothing to do here. Nothing could be further from the truth. Those of us that live and work here need to 1) Become engaged in the organizations and activities offered locally and 2) get to know our neighbors and coworkers and invite them. We have to support our community and become its biggest cheerleaders before anyone else will.

The person who has had the biggest influence on you and why: This is a tough one. Clyde Reynolds, president of Keystone Risk Management in Lincoln, was my first ‘boss.’ As a business owner, he truly embodies professionalism, client care and customer service. As a mentor, he taught me to not just do the right thing but to always be aware; never missing an opportunity to open a door, carry a heavy load, or pick up something dropped. For Clyde it isn’t a way of doing, it’s a way of being. His generosity of time, expertise and funding to local organizations inspires me.

What you still hope to accomplish: I want the local laws regarding pet breeding, licensing and ownership modified to 1) make the breeder licensing process more strict, 2) install tougher penalties for violations of USDA regulations and 3) require mandatory spay/neuter for all companion animals unless that animal is used for strict licensed breeding. It is insane to me that all of our fundraising and programming work on the foundation and at the shelter is dedicated to saving animals lives and reducing the stray population through spay neuter yet every week there are approximately 100-150 animals listed in the classified section for sale by backyard breeders and puppy mills. That is almost the same number of unwanted animals that come into the shelter every month. Eventually, this reform would help relieve some of the local tax burden to support the thousands of unwanted animals who make it into our shelter every year. If we can do this on the municipal level, then county, then state, we could become an example of how to save lives and tax dollars.

Your favorite stress reliever: The West End bike path to Rock Springs or Fairview Park. I bike it or walk it daily with Tom and the dogs. Or, if all else fails, wine and an episode of the “West Wing” works.

Your favorite movie: I’m a sucker for Mel Brooks so it’s a tie between “Young Frankenstein” and “Spaceballs.” (I know, I know. Classy.)

Your favorite book: Of all time, “Marigold and the Dragon.” A children’s book that is now out of print. I love her courage and sense of curiosity! As an adult, I love fast-paced fiction. Right now, I’m working through all of the trashy and suspenseful Sidney Sheldon novels.

Quote to live by: Adapted from Dominique Browning. “Advocacy provides an outlet for the (coulda, woulda, shoulda) monologue in your head. (Find something you’re passionate about), find like-minded, equally passionate people and fight for your cause.”

Todd Cyrulik Age: 39 Family: Angie, wife of 11 years, and children Evan (8) and Owen, Claire and Olivia (all 2). Current position/responsibilities: Senior architect/designer and BLDD Architects, Inc. We have five locations in Illinois and Iowa and are celebrating our 83rd year here in Decatur. I lead the Decatur design team and focus on designing educational spaces for all ages. I also strive to help our office meet our favorite core value — fun — with my unofficial title of "director of mirth" because having fun is serious business.

What you like best about what you do: I get to meet and work with people and help them learn to dream a little. Nothing is more amazing than walking through a space you have designed for someone and seeing them so proud of what they have accomplished.

What you like best about working or living in the community: I like seeing positive change almost daily. In the 15 years that I have been a part of the Decatur community it has been amazing to see the downtown and community reborn. It is so amazing to see the schools and colleges expanding and the growing nightlife and restaurants making downtown a destination. The work by the city has been great. Having a place to walk and relax with friends and coworkers is such a great asset around the office. I feel like I arrived at the beginning of something special and have gotten to be a part of it.

What should the community be doing to attract more young people to live and work in the Decatur area: I think we are well on our way, but we need to continue to provide more educational, cultural, and recreational opportunities. Today’s successful communities stimulate and encourage young entrepreneurs to work and build in their community. The next generation of Royce Huss, Jerry Schlieper, and Hieronymous Mueller will build their companies here if we have strong schools and great neighborhoods to meet their needs. Places for their families to learn, modern infrastructure to support the needs of business, and stimulating cultural and recreational opportunities are what attracts and retains business leaders and their work force.

The person who has had the biggest influence on you and why: It has to be my father. He embodies everything that I strive to be. From his amazing work ethic, passion for finding fun in everyday life, and his willingness to evolve and grow as a person to his endless love for my mother and our family, he has provided me with a model of how to create a happy and productive life.

What you still hope to accomplish: I want to be a part of making small towns and cities in the Midwest sustainable and viable for future generations. I want to help secure the future of communities like ours through good planning and design. I think the world needs and should continue to enjoy assets that our hardworking and caring communities develop.

Your favorite stress reliever: Huddled on the couch with my wife and all my kids. Gardening is a distant second.

Your favorite movie: “Goodfellas”

Your favorite book: ““Ignore Everybody: And 39 Other Keys to Creativity” by Hugh MacLeod. “Devil in the White City” is a close second.

Quote to live by: “You wouldn’t worry so much about what others think of you if you realized how seldom they do.” — Eleanor Roosevelt

Brad Doran Age: 37 Family: Bethany, wife; and daughters Brookelyn, Bridgette and Brylee. Current position/responsibilities: Senior vice president of operations and information systems for Hickory Point Bank & Trust.

What you like best about what you do: I like working with the people at the bank. We really do have the best employees. I enjoy working with the ever changing environment of banking. We constantly have to keep up with new technology and provide solutions that meet our customers’ needs. The banking delivery model for customers is ever evolving.

What you like best about working or living in the community: I like the convenience of a short commute to work and not having to deal with a lot of traffic. There is a small-town feel to Decatur, yet it offers plenty of activities, restaurants and shopping. The lower cost of living compared to other communities is nice. Being centrally located in Illinois you can go to Chicago, St. Louis or Indianapolis within a short drive.

What should the community be doing to attract more young people to live and work in the Decatur area: I think the lakefront project is the right direction to go. Being able to offer more outdoor activities seems to be appealing to the younger generation. I would like to see more retail stores brought to the area. Continuing to develop the downtown area will help attract the right types of businesses.

The people who have had the biggest influence on you and why: My parents have always had a positive impact on my life. They’ve always believed I can do anything I put my mind to. If more parents would believe in their children and give them positive feedback, there would be a lot more successful people in this world.

What you still hope to accomplish: I want to look back someday and know I was a positive influence on the successes my children have accomplished. I want them to understand what a true family represents and how it’s supposed to look in God’s eyes. Raising children is a hard, but one of the most rewarding jobs to have.

Your favorite stress reliever: I enjoy spending time with my family doing about anything. I also try to work out on a regular basis.

Your favorite movie: Any action movie.

Your favorite book: Any book by John Maxwell.

What you like best about what you do:

In comparing my days, no two are exactly alike. Walking in the door, my schedule has an organized set of parameters, but it allows for enough flexibility to guarantee that every hour and day is always a little different. Some days may be spent working in the area of recruiting and assisting new advisors or those transitioning to join IPI, and other days may be focusing on marketing pieces, website or other forms of internal or external communication. But, my favorite part of a workday would include event planning. I’m able to shift from contracting venues, securing sponsorships, researching keynote speakers and entertainment, purchasing gifts, making menus or reservations, creating marketing materials … It’s the perfect job for an orderly multi-tasker with a touch of free spirit.

What you like best about working or living in the community: I love that the heart of Decatur (the downtown area) is growing and thriving. It shows pride and positive change in our community. In just our downtown area, you can find everything from popcorn (Del’s) to wine (The Decanter). You can step into local businesses and chat with the owner… and they probably know your name, other members of your family, and what you talked about the last time you were in the shop. Decatur offers family fun including a wonderful parks and recreation program, arts for all ages, bike trails, the Children’s Museum and events at Kirkland. We have at least three great places to get pizza that aren’t nationwide chains, nightlife (including Lock Stock, Pacos and Katz), great local restaurants around the city (including The Beach House, BIZOU, Doherty’s, Robbies, Fuji), and we even have a sports bar on the north end. Along with these, and many other educational and recreational activities you can find on a daily basis, we host the Decatur Celebration. As we take time to celebrate each year, we are able to share Decatur with others (many who drive from states away) wanting to live in our town — even if it’s just for a few days.

What should the community be doing to attract more young people to live and work in the Decatur area: In the past few years, Decatur has begun to promote many more activities for young professionals. I would love to see a Facebook page or website promoting “what’s happening around town” where local businesses could add their activities in one place. Promoting anything from upcoming outdoor events, live music, new businesses, leadership workshops, kids camps, business lunches, happy hour specials, arts and recreation, etc. Creating an area as a resource and reference of events, would be a great “stop” for those looking to find out what Decatur has to offer and the fun they can have around town.

The person who has had the biggest influence on you and why: Being unable to limit my biggest influencer (or teacher) to one, I’d have to narrow it down to my top four (in no particular order) with my (shorter than deserved) explanations of why. Things I’ve learned from my: Grandma, Nancy Rauschek — Always believe in yourself and put the best construction on situations and those around you. Dad, Dave Koshinski — Never settle. Hard work can be fun. Mom, Judy Koshinski — Doing your best is never a waste of time. And… Your Mother is always right! (I especially like this one now that I’m a mom!) Sister, Jennifer Koshinski Dahn — Celebrate differences… they can create an unbreakable bond.

What you still hope to accomplish: Continuing to enjoy fun times with family and friends would be at the top of my list. I’m hoping to provide my kids with many of the experiences that I’ve been able to enjoy, and I look forward to adding some new and exciting adventures along the way. I’d also like to fill some of the blank pages in my passport.

Your favorite stress reliever: Some of my favorite stress relievers would include: hanging out with my kids, shopping trips, eating cupcakes, traveling, drinking Mojitos, and phone calls from good friends.

Your favorite movie: “Mamma Mia!” Your favorite book: After considering a list of many favorites, I go back to a most memorable from many years ago: “Are you There God? It’s Me, Margaret” by Judy Blume.

Hillarie Ryann Hudson Age: 28 Family: Mick and Karen Hudson, parents; Heather, sister, and Romeo, nephew (a boxer dog). Current position/responsibilities: Orthodontist at Hudson Orthodontics What you like best about what you do: I love everyone who I work with. I love all the funny stories the kids tell. I feel like we are laughing every day. There isn’t a day that goes by where I’m not having fun.

What you like best about working or living in the community: It feels like home. I like knowing everyone in the area. Plus, I save money by living here.

What should the community be doing to attract more young people to live and work in the Decatur area: Be proud of where you live. I wish everyone would just think about the positive attributes instead of the bad. It says a lot about a town if the people are happy living there.

The person who has had the biggest influence on you and why: My parents. They have given me support, motivation, and guidance every time I’ve needed it — and it was a lot! I am the person I am today because they’ve help mold me.

What you still hope to accomplish: I want people to know that you can get world-class orthodontic care right here in Decatur, Illinois.

Your favorite stress reliever: Naps!

Your favorite movie: Recently, “Real Steel” and “The Avengers.” Your favorite book: Well, since I’m taking night classes, I’m still reading textbooks in my “free time,” so I wouldn’t say I have a favorite.

Quote to live by: “You make plans and life happens.”

Bruce Wayne Jeffery Age: 27 Family: MBrittney Motley, fiancé, and Armani, dog. Current position/responsibilities: Executive director, Boys & Girls Club of Decatur.

What you like best about what you do: The best part of my job is seeing the kids grow into what we, as a community, can all be proud of. Seeing the smaller kids grow into teens and the teens going on to college or the work force is special to see. And it’s always fun in a competitive game of foosball with the kids at times, too. (I lose most of the time, but I try.)

What you like best about working or living in the community: I love the fact that it hardly takes anytime to get around town. The people in Decatur make you feel like we all know each other. Everyone waves to you, everyone speaks to you. And who couldn’t love the smell of soybean at 7 a.m.

What should the community be doing to attract more young people to live and work in the Decatur area: I think we need to take a look at the entertainment and opportunities for advancement in young people’s careers. Most young people want to be sociable and there are not a lot social activities going on. And, at some point in time, get some performer at the Decatur Celebration from the 21st century. But I guess the 70s and 80s will have to do for now.

The person who has had the biggest influence on you and why: I would have to say my pastor, Bishop G.E. Livingston. Early on he taught me to “bloom where I’m planted” and I have really tried to apply that to my growth and development as a young professional in Decatur.

What you still hope to accomplish: In the words of one of my favorite cartoon characters (Pinky & The Brain), “Try to take over the world.” Hey, I’m an 80s baby.

Your favorite stress reliever: Going to the shooting range and sometimes my PlayStation 3.

Your favorite movie: “The Sandlot” (“Your killing me Smalls”) Your favorite book: “Man After Gods Own Heart” Quote to live by: “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate; our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure, it is our light not our darkness that most frightens us.”

Brandon Mandernach Age: 30 Family: Jan and Craig Mandernach, parents. Current position/responsibilities: Paramedic, caring for ill and injured

What you like best about what you do: Being able to help people in their time of need.

What you like best about working or living in the community: Small town feel with work challenges of a larger community. Close to friends and family.

What should the community be doing to attract more young people to live and work in the Decatur area: More outdoor activities — concerts, street festivals, bike trails, outdoor dining — and more ethnic restaurants beyond Chinese and Mexican.

The person who has had the biggest influence on you and why: Grandfather, Robert Bear, who built a business, loved photography and travel, golfed, and was family oriented.

What you still hope to accomplish: Finish bachelor’s degree and rear a family.

Your favorite stress reliever: Long distance bike rides.

Your favorite movie: “The Shawshank Redemption”

Your favorite book: “The Search for Delicious” Quote to live by: “Life’s too short to sweat the small stuff.”

Kimberly Mangan Age: 37 Family: Brian, husband; children Claire (11) and Garrett (7). Current position/responsibilities: Wife, mother and community volunteer: As of now, I am staying home with my children and am loving every minute of it. I was a casualty of the Archer Daniels Midland Co. layoffs in February and am waiting for the right position with the right organization, but until then I’m enjoying my first ever summer long vacation. I’m taking this opportunity to complete home improvement projects, spend more time with my family and volunteer more time with my favorite community organizations including Baby TALK and The Rodney T. Miller Triathlon.

What you like best about what you do: Working with non-profit organizations and community leaders to create change in our community is a passion of mine and one that I fully intend to follow as I further develop my career path. I enjoy collaborating with people who bring all sorts of great ideas to the table and aren’t afraid to roll up their sleeves and get their hands dirty to make those ideas happen.

What you like best about working or living in the community: The friendly nature and generosity of the people in this community make this an ideal place to live, work and raise my family. If you’re a skeptic about the power of this community, I challenge you to volunteer one hour during the WSOY Community Food Drive in October. You will leave inspired.

What should the community be doing to attract more young people to live and work in the Decatur area: I think it’s being done. Lakefront development, downtown streetscape and development, west-end development, initiatives driven by the Community Foundation, United Way, Millikin, Richland, local business owners on and on. I think the community just needs to pay attention, realize it’s all happening right now and get behind any number of projects. Volunteer your time and your treasure. Get involved. Get educated on local projects, find one that appeals to you and jump in. And talk about all the great things happening here with people inside and outside of this community. Decatur’s greatest asset is its people and they should be Decatur’s greatest cheerleaders.

The person who has had the biggest influence on you and why: Karla Miller. I worked for Karla several years ago as her administrative assistant. She was an inspiring leader and great motivator for our entire department. She took every opportunity to teach me about corporate communications, community involvement and be my mentor. Karla encouraged me to go back to Millikin to finish my bachelor’s degree. I did and graduated in December 2009. Going back to school while I was working full time and raising a young family had its challenges but I never regretted it for a moment and will always be grateful that someone I admired so much took the time to encourage me.

What you still hope to accomplish: For starters, I would like to land a position with a local non-profit so I can continue to give back to this community though smart planning and good, old-fashioned hard work. I want to raise my children with my husband, Brian, so they grow up to be conscientious citizens and future community leaders. I want to assist this community as it strives to fulfill its goals of growth and success. And maybe more importantly, I’d like to share what I know and inspire others in our community to take a more active role.

Your favorite stress reliever: Music, preferably live with my camera strapped around my neck. But when that’s not possible anywhere I can play it loud and sing along.

Your favorite movie: “It’s a toss-up between “Steel Magnolias” and “Fried Green Tomatoes.” Your favorite book: “The Bridge to Terabithia” by Katherine Paterson. Quote to live by: "Be the change you wish to see in the world" — Gandhi

The ability to spend time in a beautiful setting — whether paddling a kayak, exploring a park, or biking a trail without traveling more than a mile or two — is the best part about living in Decatur.

What should the community be doing to attract more young people to live and work in the Decatur area: Decatur has so much to offer. We need to promote all of the positive, fun, accessible, beautiful features of the area. We also need to let young people know that their involvement and interest in the community are critical to a successful future. Their thoughts and ideas are powerful building blocks in retaining their enthusiasm and encouraging them to return to Decatur.

The person who has had the biggest influence on you and why: My parents encouraged my interests and adventures, but my husband is a continual source of support and an excellent springboard for ideas and solutions.

What you still hope to accomplish: I have a goal to make being active and getting moving an easier choice for all in our community. Creating partnerships has allowed for an ever-growing list of programs and activities that improve access to health, wellness, and physical activities and connect residents to recreation opportunities. I would also like to continue to educate residents about all the park district has to offer. Many people are surprised by the many “hidden gems” within the district — from garden plots to mountain bike trails, tennis facilities to dog parks, historical markers to youth sports, golf courses to Park Singers, yoga to banquet spaces … the list goes on and on!

Your favorite stress reliever: Spending time in my garden, reading and playing with my boys.

Your favorite movie: “… And Ladies of the Club” by Helen Hooven Santmyer Your favorite book: I’m a pretty regular reader of all types of books, but was never really a fantasy or sci-fi reader until I met my husband. He introduced me to J.R.R. Tolkien and the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy, and a fun series of books by Jasper Fforde, “The Thursday Next” series with my favorite being “An Eyre Affair.”

Mindy PetersonLindsey Age: 35 Family: Sam, husband; Pat and Duane Peterson, parents Current position/responsibilities: Community and Economic Development Program coordinator, University of Illinois Extension.

What you like best about what you do: The best part of my job is watching someone learn a new skill or idea and use it. Watching that individual succeed and flourish at something new ignites the passion within me.

What you like best about working or living in the community: I am always amazed at the way organizations work together in this community, bringing their best assets to the table. Without this collaboration, and the willingness to share resources, many of the programs we have would not be able to have the impact they do. Many of the collaborations that we are a part of make a difference daily in people’s lives.

What should the community be doing to attract more young people to live and work in the Decatur area: Start early with the youth in our own community! Get them involved, and a part of our community organizations, so that they have buy-in for the future of their community, thus allowing them to be a part of what they have created. Make them want to come back to the community they grew up in and bring others with them.

The person who has had the biggest influence on you and why: The person who had the biggest influence on me was my grandpa, Loren Munro. My grandpa was a man of few words who taught me, less is more, common sense gets you a lot farther in this world than just book sense, treat people with respect and kindness, work hard at whatever you do, and never judge someone for what they do or do not have, instead look at who they are as a person.

What you still hope to accomplish: The art of self-confidence is something I hope to accomplish. It is an easy word to say, but a difficult personal belief for me.

Your favorite stress reliever: I love to head back to my hometown of Crescent City, Ill., and sit on the back porch of my parent’s house in the country late at night. There is no peace like the sounds of the country with the night sky as your backdrop.

Your favorite movie: Irving Berlin’s “White Christmas.” I can watch it any day of the year.

Your favorite book: “The Little Prince” by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry Quote to live by: “I have outran my fear of death, I am content to journey on, doing what good I can do, seeing all that I can see and loving all that I can love, so that at the end I have no regrets about what I missed, who I was not or all the things I do…let my spirit be free until I am no more.”

As medical director I am responsible for ensuring the medical providers are providing quality medical care for our patients. I also serve the community as an elected official on Decatur’s City Council.

What you like best about what you do: As a physician I enjoy the fact that I am able to help people improve the quality of their health. Working in community medicine truly allows you to experience the satisfaction in knowing you have made a difference in someone’s life. That same desire to help people is also why I am on the city council. I have decided to take an active role in working to improve my city. I enjoy seeing some positive change in our city and I want to do my part to ensure it continues.

What you like best about working or living in the community: The desire to progress. There is a big drive and push to improve our city. And this drive transcends race and economic status. We are becoming more united with the common goal of what can be done to improve and attract people to Decatur and it is catching on and we will see an improvement in our community because of it.

What should the community be doing to attract more young people to live and work in the Decatur area: I believe improving the recreational options in our area is going to be very important. It will be just as important as having employment options that allow people to have a salary to adequately care for their family and for job advancement.

The person who has had the biggest influence on you and why: There have been so many people that have influenced me, especially my church family and pastor, Bishop G.E. Livingston. But if I had to say one person it would be my mother, Laverne Hines. Her opinion and guidance has always been important to me. I have modeled her work ethic, persistence, and determination and I often remind myself of her advice to work smarter and not harder.

What you still hope to accomplish: CHIC clinic is a 5-star organization that I want to continue to help shine and I want the patients and community to realize and appreciate the awesome service it provides. I want to see our community become more empowered in their physical, spiritual, emotional and mental health. It sounds very simple but a happy person is a productive person.

Your favorite stress reliever: Spending time with my family. As I get older I realize just how important they are and I value the time we spend together.

Your favorite movie: “The Color Purple” by Steven Spielberg

Current position/responsibilities: I work as a literacy specialist for Project READ, a program of Richland Community College. Project READ is an adult literacy program that helps adults improve their reading and math skills. In my position I wear a wide array of hats. I assess incoming students to identify their educational needs, match each student with a volunteer tutor and then coach each pair to ensure that the needs of both the student and tutor are being met. I have also led the development and writing of a math curriculum that focuses on helping our students build a strong foundation of math skills via multisensory learning and repetition.

What you like best about what you do: I get to watch lives change every day. I don’t think I could ask for anything more rewarding. Sara Zarndt

Age: 29 Family: My fiance, Ben Brickey, our Blue Heeler, Mojo, and our cat, Zendra. Current position/responsibilities: Operations Manager at Re-Bath of Illinois and 5 Day Kitchens. My responsibilities include managing the day-to-day operations of both companies including our satellite offices and handling the marketing and advertising.

What you like best about what you do: It’s constantly changing and always challenging me. I wear so many different hats throughout the week that no two days are ever alike. Some days I’m visiting job sites and working with clients on their bathroom and kitchen remodeling projects and other days I’m on the road to our different offices, but I love every minute of it.

What you like best about working or living in the community: I didn’t realize it until I moved out of Decatur, but the sense of community here is truly inspiring. Our population is diverse, and I’ve never been so proud to call Decatur my hometown. The people of Decatur know how to pull together. Through my volunteer work with Junior Welfare Association, I get to interact with women from all walks of life who are all committed to the same cause. I also love the fact that there’s so much to do here. There’s literally something for everyone.

What should the community be doing to attract more young people to live and work in the Decatur area: I think a grassroots approach is what really makes a difference. As individuals, we all need to do a better job of getting involved. When other people see you actively engaging in your community, it inspires them, and spreads like wildfire. There is so much to do here, so much to be involved in and volunteer for. Decatur already has everything we need. I think the secret lies in exposing ourselves to what’s new to us. All we have to do is be willing to take the first step.

The person who has had the biggest influence on you and why: My dad, and not just because he’s my boss. I watched my dad follow his dream of being a business owner, even when it meant taking calculated risks. He truly embodies what it means to be an entrepreneur. He is dedicated to his customers and to his employees. He cares about people and he leads from the heart. As his employee, I value his unwavering vision to be the best at what we do. I couldn’t have picked a better mentor.

What you still hope to accomplish: There’s so much. My overall career goal is to take over our family of companies when my dad retires (like that will ever happen). But every day I try to keep pushing myself to be the best I can — whether it’s at work, in the volunteer setting, or elsewhere. Every day is an opportunity to make something great happen.

Your favorite stress reliever: Turning off my phone and working out. Your favorite movie: “Dumb and Dumber” Your favorite book: Currently it’s “The Great Game of Business” by Jack Stack. Quote to live by: “Conformity is the jailer of freedom and the enemy of growth.” — John F. Kennedy

Current position/responsibilities: Senior account executive at Neuhoff Media Decatur. I am responsible for developing and maintaining successful marketing campaigns through our radio and digital media, for both national and local businesses. I am the group leader for Neuhoff Media’s Downtown Partners and assist in events and promotions that Neuhoff Media is involved in.

What you like best about what you do: Every day is full of different experiences. I work with businesses on every level, large to small, local or national, and of a variety of different industries. Because each day my job requires me to visit with other business professionals and community partners, I have been able to develop and build solid relationships and am always learning something new. It’s most rewarding to know that I have directly contributed to helping businesses grow by simply doing a job that I have a passion for. I love being able to work for a company that is so involved with the community whether it’s annual food drives, St. Jude’s Radiothons, Real Men Wear Pink breast cancer awareness, raising money for Meals on Wheels, and the list goes on. We really are ‘Media Made Locally’.

What you like best about working or living in the community: It’s a community that cares; it’s full of leaders and volunteers who are willing to step up when needs arise. Because it is such a proactive community, we benefit from many great networking and learning opportunities and events as well. I also love the fact that we have so many amazing and unique dining, shopping, and recreational opportunities to take advantage of.

What should the community be doing to attract more young people to live and work in the Decatur area: I think we are on the right path with the downtown reconstruction, lake front development plans, Grow Decatur initiative the soon to be improved upon Club 501. We are making the right progress and just need to continue engaging with positive, can-do leaders in our community.

The person who has had the biggest influence on you and why: My father. He showed me the importance of giving back by means of volunteer or service work, is always striving to make his community a better place to live, and has always kept the utmost integrity and morals. He is the very definition of work ethic, integrity and commitment — always going above and beyond not because he had to, but because he wanted to. He truly believes the sky’s the limit and has always pushed me to succeed. There’s never been a time when he hasn’t believed in me and told me that I really could do anything I put my mind to. If I am ever having doubts in my abilities, he is the first to remind me to keep my head up and “don’t let anyone get you down.” Watching him stay true to himself and uphold his values, while sometimes under public scrutiny, is a constant reminder of how important it is uphold my own principles and fulfill my life’s ambitions.

Michelle Bovyn Family: Jason, husband; and daughters Kaylee, Kerrigan, and Khloe Current position/responsibilities: Emergency Room Nurse at St. Mary’s Hospital in Decatur. What you like best about what you do: I love being able to walk into work every day knowing that there is always going to be something new. I like the challenge of helping the patients with a variety of health issues and helping them to feel better. Every day and every shift is different from the one before which allows me the opportunity to use my skills as well as develop new ones in order to meet the needs of the patient. This is a job in which you have to love what you do..

What you like best about working or living in the community: I have been here most of my life and I have grown to know so many people here. There is always someone to say hello and there are so many ways to be involved, in either a large or small way. I love how this community can join together to help each other out when there are people in need of some extra support. What should the community be doing to attract more young people to live and work in the Decatur area: I really think that the Decatur community needs to continue to highlight what it does offer. There are so many people who run out of Decatur as fast as they can after they are done with school, but I don’t think they realize what Decatur can offer them. Jason and I came back to Decatur because of family, friends and the community. It is home.

The person who has had the biggest influence on you and why: There are so many people who have played such big patrs in influencing my life that I don’t think that I can pick just one. My family has influenced me so much but so have my coworkers and friends. What you still hope to accomplish: I want to raise my girls to be strong, independent women. I want to spend much more time with my husband and maybe see more of the world. Professionally, I am happy doing what I do now, but nursing has so much to offer that maybe one day I will decide to do something else. Your favorite stress reliever: I love to run. I am not great at it, but I love doing it. I started a few years ago doing the Shoreline Squad and I have not looked back. Maybe one day I will work up the inner runner to do a marathon, but for now I just keep putting one foot in front of the other and the iPod full of music I like.

Your favorite movie: Any of the typical 80s movies. “The Breakfast Club,” “Sixteen Candles,” “Pretty in Pink,” “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” “Goonies,” “The Lost Boys,” “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” … all of them.

Your favorite book: ““Wicked.” I love the spin that it puts on the whole Wizard of Oz story. Quote to live by: ““And in the end, it is not years in your life that count. It is the life in your years.” — Abraham Lincoln

From securing national exposure for products, developing consumer education strategies for programs and implementing crisis communications plans for organizations, PR encompasses a broad range of efforts and initiatives.

To truly be effective you have to know a little bit about a lot of issues and industries, stay on top of the latest news, trends and studies, and continually foster relationships with both media and industry leaders. It’s fun, and I have a job that allows me the opportunity to help position and grow businesses by telling the good stories and bringing to light what they do best.

What you like best about working or living in the community: Decatur is a close-knit community full of strong personalities and big hearts. The people who live and work here are passionate about the future of Decatur and are constantly working to make Decatur a stronger, more competitive community.

What should the community be doing to attract more young people to live and work in the Decatur area: I think city leaders are on the right track. There are a number of pivotal initiatives in motion that will help attract and retain young people including the development around Lake Decatur, the reform and renovation of Decatur’s high schools, the beautification of downtown and the efforts of Grow Decatur and other organizations to ensure progress. We also need to continue working with large corporations to keep and grow their work force here in Decatur, increasing the opportunities for good paying jobs that attract young professionals.

The person who has had the biggest influence on you and why: My mother. She is a strong role model and still the voice of reason in my life.

What you still hope to accomplish: At 35 years old, I still think about what I’d like to be when I grow up. I’d like to say my plans are grand but really I hope to be the best mom I can be to my children, raise them to be strong leaders and inspire meaningful change in the world. Someday I will travel (Alaska, Australia, Italy).

Your favorite stress reliever: Wine and a long walk (not at the same time). Shopping also helps.

Your favorite movie: “Dirty Dancing,” “Powder” or anything with Will Smith. Your favorite book: “Who Moved My Cheese” Quote to live by: “Success is getting what you want. Happiness is wanting what you get” — Dale Carnegie

Therefore, I get a lot of love from the community and it’s a great topic of conversation.

What should the community be doing to attract more young people to live and work in the Decatur area: First, we must change our old ways of thinking and start uplifting Decatur instead of tearing it down.

Matt Brown Age: 34 Family: Melanie, wife; and boys, Brody (4) and Braden (2). Current position/responsibilities: As vice-president of Jones & Sullivan Enterprises, Inc., a commercial general contractor and residential specialty contractor, my responsibilities include providing overall direction for our operations and overseeing all day-to-day business operations. My wife and I also own and operate a residential real estate rental business, Pleasant View Properties.

What you like best about what you do: I enjoy the variety and flexibility that comes with running a small business. Typical tasks during a workday might include reviewing payroll, estimating a job, meeting with vendors, dealing with personnel issues, scheduling manpower on projects, leading a staff meeting, and/or making a collection call, just to name a few. The next day may be totally different. The flexibility of my job also allows me to tend to the needs of a tenant when that unexpected maintenance call arises. The ability to juggle all these responsibilities and make everything come together at the end of the day is very rewarding. What you like best about working or living in the community: The relationships I build with employees, co-workers, customers, vendors, tenants, neighbors and community volunteers are what I like most about working and living in this community. Decatur is what I call “a big small town.” Everyone knows each other and there is a strong sense of community. When I can work with these people in any capacity to make something better in their lives I feel a sense of fulfillment. There is nothing better than helping someone to succeed. Usually that means you have succeeded.

What should the community be doing to attract more young people to live and work in the Decatur area: The community is doing what it can to promote Decatur to potential young residents; portions of the lakefront development plan and the downtown redevelopment are two prime examples of things that young professionals may enjoy in the near future. We also need to support our local businesses in every way possible because they are the initial attraction for many young professionals to the community. I think that we, as community members, can help to retain these young professionals by promoting our organizations, recreational activities and local attractions and encouraging them to join and participate. People will not want to leave if they are involved and feel a sense of community in Decatur.

The person who has had the biggest influence on you and why: I cannot choose just one person. Different individuals have influenced me in separate, but equally important ways. My parents instilled in me the importance of family, a strong work ethic and a high moral standard. My grandfather has taught me more about business than any school could possibly teach. My wife provides support and structure to our lives, making it possible to accomplish almost anything. I guess “family” in general is the best answer to this question. What you still hope to accomplish: Doing everything I can to make Decatur a better place to live for those who plan to raise a family here is one of my main goals. I want to leave my mark on this community. I’m not sure exactly what that legacy will be, but I want to make a difference. Your favorite stress reliever: Boating. Our family can get on Lake Decatur for an afternoon or evening and there are no more worries. Your favorite movie: It is a tossup – “The Shawshank Redemption” or “The Usual Suspects.” Your favorite book: “The Millionaire Mind” by Thomas J. Stanley. Quote to live by: “Don’t be afraid to see what you see.” — Ronald Reagan

is proud to salute Matt for his commitment to customer service, dedication to the family business, and his efforts to make a difference in the community.
