The road to savings A little preventive maintenance pays benefits to car owners By PEGGY LARSON H&R Staff Writer DECATUR — Gas prices may be high, but drivers who plan to hit the road for a spring trip need not despair. Local experts say there are several ways to improve gas mileage and lengthen the life of your vehicle. Before taking off, it’s important to inspect the basics: the brakes, cooling systems, belts, hoses, tires and fluid levels. Keeping these maintained can add thousands of miles to the life of your car, and the better maintained the vehicle, the better the gas mileage. Proper maintenance also is important to save gas and stay safe on the road. Regular maintenance information can be found in the vehicle’s owner’s manual. “If the owner’s manual says to do it (maintenance) at a certain mileage, then that’s when you need to do it,” said Anthony Wathan Jr. of Newell’s Auto Body & Electrical Service, 996 W. Harrison Ave. in Decatur. “In the long run, as long as everything is up to manufacturer specifications, (and) if you maintain your vehicle, that should keep your mileage good,” he said. Ed Marquis of Ed’s Auto Service Inc. suggests drivers check the tire pressure if they want to save money at the gas pump. Tires need be inflated to the manufacturer’s recommendations. That can be found on the inside door jamb on the driver’s side of
the car. Marquis, whose shop has been in the same location at 1280 S. Jasper St. in Decatur for 34 years, has abundant experience with getting cars ready for the road and maintaining them. “If you overinflate the tire and you get into the heat, it will expand, and you can have a blowout,” Marquis said. Driving on underinflated tires can be just as damaging, according to Wathan. “Driving with under-inflated tires can cause drag and lessens your gas mileage.” Both said many people aren’t even sure if they have a spare tire in their car, and if they do have one, many drivers don’t what condition it may be in. Don’t wait until you plan a long car trip to check that spare, Marquis cautioned, since a flat can happen at any time. “You never know when you’ll come across debris in the road,” he said. A dirty grille and blocked cooling vents can decrease mileage and a vehicle’s performance as well. When a vehicle’s engine “can’t pull the air through,” it creates excess wear on the engine, Marquis explained. He said people would be surprised by some of the things he has found in cars he has serviced. “We’ve pulled out bird’s nests, bugs, leaves.” Remedying the problem is easy. “You can just take a water hose to flush the bugs and leaves out that accumulate in there,” he
said. When it comes to overall safety, don’t neglect the little things, such as headlights and brake lights. Marquis suggests the bright and dim headlights and turn signals need periodic checks. Also, make sure the air filter is replaced periodically. A new air filter helps improve gas mileage, as well as the life of the vehicle. It’s also not a good idea to leave home without jumper cables. But don’t just put them in the trunk and forget them. “Always carry jumper cables and know how to use them,” Marquis said. “If you are jumping from car to car and the cables are wrong, airbags could deploy. It is important to keep the motor running for 20 to 30 minutes after a jump to give the battery time to recharge, he advises. By the way, “if you need to use the jumper cables, you know that there is something that needs to be fixed,” he added. That’s why it is a good idea for drivers to pay close attention to those warning lights on the dash. “Whenever a warning light comes on, the manufacturer gives you enough time to get to a shop to get it fixed,” Marquis said. “You should always watch for any other lights that come on.” If they do, “pull to the side and call a tow truck, because it’s going to be dangerous,” he advised. plarson@herald-review.com | 421-6983
Get the most out of your gas tank with these tips By Metro Creative Services The economy might be slowly recovering, but saving money is still foremost on the minds of many people. Men and women have looked to save money in a variety of ways, including at the gas pump. While there’s little drivers can do to reduce the cost of a gallon of gas, there are ways they can make the gas last a little longer.
• EMPTY THE TRUNK: Though it might be more convenient to keep your golf clubs in the trunk of your car, extra and unnecessary cargo in a vehicle’s trunk drastically reduces fuel economy. An extra 100 pounds in a vehicle can reduce miles per gallon by as much as 2 percent, so keep a trunk free of items that aren’t absolutely necessary.
• CRUISE ALONG: Embrace cruise control on long drives without lots of stopping and starting. Maintaining a constant speed, which a vehicle does when drivers use cruise control, can help save fuel, as it’s less taxing on an engine to continue at one speed than it is to constantly switch back and forth between high and low speeds.
• DON’T SPEED: Obeying the speed limit might save your life, and it can also save you money. Typically, fuel economy decreases rapidly as a car reaches and surpasses 60 miles per hour. According to the U.S. Department of Safety, drivers can assume that each five miles per hour they drive more than 60, they are paying an additional $0.26 per gallon for gas .
• STOP IDLING: Many people let their car idle for several minutes on cold mornings. But today’s newer vehicles don’t really need to idle to warm up, and idling can be very taxing on fuel economy. Depending on the size of the car, idling can use between a quarter to a half gallon of fuel per hour. If you still insist on letting the vehicle idle, a few seconds of idling should be enough to warm the engine up.
• INFLATE THE TIRES: Poorly inflated tires lower gas mileage and pose a safety hazard. The Department of Energy notes that properly inflated tires can improve gas mileage by as much as 3 percent. Ideal tire pressure is different for each vehicle, so check your vehicle’s owner’s manual for recommended tire pressure. Some vehicle manufacturers also include the recommended tire pressure on the vehicle itself, be it in the driver’s
side door jamb or in the vehicle’s glove compartment. Tire pressure printed on the tire’s sidewall might not be the ideal tire inflation for your particular vehicle, so always adhere to the manufacturer’s recommendation instead. • GET WHAT YOU NEED: Drive the car you need, not the car you want. Drivers who truly need to save money at the pump should consider the type of vehicle they’re driving, and whether it’s the car they need or the car they want. For instance, office workers who own a pickup truck but don’t use it to haul items might want to consider a smaller vehicle that gets better gas mileage. Improving fuel efficiency is a great way for motorists to save money and reduce the expenses associated with vehicle ownership.

It’s well-suited for those looking for performance in a family sedan featuring both European-inspired handling and design. Suzuki offers a 100,000-mile/7-year power train limited warranty. Base prices range from the S front-wheel drive at $18,999 to the truly impressive SLS Sport at only $28,948, with a vast array of luxury features included. What’s new for 2012? For 2012 Suzuki has introduced only minor changes to the Kizashi. In SE trim, a leather seat package is available, as is a crimson red metallic exterior color. Model strengths are strong standard feature list, excellent handling, available all-wheel drive and good value. The Suzuki Kizashi comes in four trim levels, S, SE, GTS Sport and SLS Sport. All are fitted with a 2.4L four cylinder engine that features twin balance shafts and variable intake valve timing, producing 185 horsepower and 170 pound-feet of torque.

Details, details, details ... Sweat the small stuff to get a great return on your vehicle investment By PEGGY LARSON H&R Staff Writer DECATUR — Investing in a vehicle means more than arranging financing at the dealership. To help drivers keep their vehicle investment in drive-off-the-lot shape longer, area experts offer some recommendations. When it comes to preowned cars it is obvious which ones have been taken care of, said Dan Perry of Miles Chevrolet, who specializes in preowned vehicles. “When you park outside you get the sun’s ultraviolet rays,” he explained. “Does it make a difference if you get salt off from the snow? Yes. Wax the car? Yes. Get acid off from the bugs, get the bugs off right away. This will keep your car looking better.” A car that is housed in a garage is protected from the elements and is more likely to keep its showroom
finish for a much longer time. Perry compares the investment of time and care in a vehicle to taking care of your health. “If you want your body to be in good shape at the age of 65, you need to take care of it,” he said. “If you’re going to keep a car for a long time, the washing (and) the vacuuming regularly is worth more money.” Todd Newell of Newell’s Body Shop in Decatur emphasized the importance of a complete detail prior to selling a car. “I’ve had people tell me that they’ve gotten an extra $1,000 out of their trade-in due to a detail.” A detail benefits the interior and exterior of the vehicle. “The sun and elements oxidize paint and turns it chalky white and loses brightness,” he said. To do a complete detail, Newell says he first buffs out the oxidation and removes light surface scratches. He
then applies polish to remove the buffing swirls and smooth out the finish. “Brush touch-up paint is used, so there’s no bare metal, so there’s no rusting,” Newell said. “Inside shampooing includes a complete interior shampoo (using) carpet extractors, hot water and disinfectant cleaner.” Both Perry and Newell agree that it is important to take care of dents and scratches early. “It’s like a crack in the road, it’s best to fix it before it becomes a pothole,” said Perry. Metal is weakened and holes can form anytime paint is cracked or pealed. “You have to cut it (the hole) out of the car to work on it and it definitely compromises the value of the vehicle,” Newell said. And while repainting is an option to improve the exterior quality of a
vehicle, it’s pricey. “It costs $3,000 to paint a car these days, that’s minimum paint materials,” Newell said, reiterating that maintaining the exterior over time pays off. Each visit to the gas station is an opportunity to wash the windshield and offers the owner a chance to spot dings and chips early on. Jason Guajardo of Auto Glass Center recommends taking care of a chipped windshield as soon as possible. “A temperature change or bump can cause it to crack,” said Guajardo. “If you can do the repair, it keeps the factory seal intact.” That, too, helps maintain the value of the car, he said. There’s also an ecological benefit to taking care of a chipped windshield. “You don’t have to send these windshields to the landfill,” he said. plarson@herald-review.com | 421-6983

The Malibu LS, LT, and LTZ without eAssist will be available in summer 2012. The new 2013 Malibu will be released first as an Eco trim with an eAssist system that enables regenerative braking, start-stop functionality and electric power assistance. The Eco includes a 182 hp, 2.4-liter direct injection four cylinder engine and next generation six speed automatic transmission. The Malibu LS, LT and LTZS trims, available in summer 2012, will include an all new 190 hp, 2.5 liter direct injection four cylinder engine, also combined with a next generation six speed automatic transmission as standard equipment. Safety features include 10 airbags, stability control, traction control and anti-lock brakes. New standard equipment includes a seven-inch touch screen radio display and Chevrolet MyLink Touch with streaming audio. The distinctive and classy Chevrolet Malibu is all new for 2013 and will be available first with eAssist.
2012 Nissan Altima The front wheel drive, five passenger Nissan Altima combines performance and an attractive exterior as either a two door coupe or a four door sedan. The Nissan Altima is powered by either a 175 hp 2.5 liter V6 or a 270 hp 3.5 liter V6 and the transmission choices include a six speed manual or continuously variable transmission (CVT). The Altima trims include 2.5 (sedan only), 2.5 S and 3.5 SR. Safety features include four wheel antilock disc brakes, six airbags, active front head restraints, vehicle stability and traction control, front seat belt pre-tensioners and a tire pressure monitoring system. For a sportier appearance the coupe’s roofline is 2.6-inches lower than the sedan’s and flows back into a long and nicely sculpted tail section that narrows between wide shoulders and prominent wheel arches. The suspension is tuned to provide the driver with a more nimble feel and heightened responsiveness. The Altima carries on for 2012 with minimal changes.

Leather seats are standard on the SEL version and the front seats are heated. Top of the line Titanium edition Escapes get a premium interior 19-inch rims and a 10 speaker audio system by Sony.
2013 Ford Explorer MSRP range $28,870 to $39,855 The 2013 Ford Explorer is a four wheel drive full size crossover available with two different engines; a standard 3.5-liter V6 engine that produces 290 hp 255 lbft of torque and an optional 2.0-liter turbocharged four cylinder Ecoboost engine that produces 240 hp 270 lb-foot of torque. Transmission options are comprised of a standard six speed automatic and an optional six speed SelectShift automatic transmission. 012 Ford F150 Truck MSRP range $23,300 to $52,230 The 2012 Ford F-150 is a full size pickup truck available in two door, four door, regular and extended cab trim levels. Engine options consist of 3.7 liter V6 (302 hp 278 lb-foot of torque), 3.5 liter Ecoboost V6 (365 hp 420 lb-foot of torque), 5.0 liter V8 (360 hp 380 lb/foot torque) and a 6.2 liter V8 (411 hp 434 lb-foot of torque). Transmission choices include a standard six speed automatic and optional six speed SelectShift automatic. Fuel mileage for the standard rear wheel drive F150 is an EPA estimated 16 mpg city and 22 mpg highway. Features include best-in-class towing/payload trailer, sway control, fully flat load floor, rear view camera, outboard-mounted rear shocks, in-cab storage and optional supercrew rear seat. Class leading fuel economy as well as best-in-class towing and horsepower for both its base V6 engine as well as both of the available V8s. It’s the only automaker to offer a six speed automatic transmission across its entire model lineup. The F-150 is also the only full sizes pickup so far to offer electric power steering which saves fuel and gives an improved steering wheel. Among the new items is a larger 36-gallon fuel tank standard on all four wheel drive EcoBoost F-150s, which increases range to 750 miles. A new FX appearance package is available on FX4 and F2 models that includes black and red fender and tailgate badges, 20-inch black wheels, chrome exhaust tip, blacked out exterior trim and decals and a red stitched steering wheel.
