Opening Ceremonies Show Stage – Friday 6 p.m.

Larry Chance & The Earls Show Stage – Friday 6:15 p.m. 9 p.m. Larry Chance & The Earls are one of the great New York City doo-wop success stories. Formed out of the Bronx, and discovered singing on the street corner in front of a subway station, the Earls took the original black doowop street corner harmony sound, and refined and expanded it for new audiences. Larry and company have placed many songs on the charts, including: “Life Is But a Dream”, “Never”, “I Believe”, and of course the classic “Remember Then”.

The Miracles Funfest Stage – Friday 7:30 p.m. 10 p.m. Scoring over 40 hits on the R&B Top 40 charts, The Miracles started out as the Five Chimes in the mid-'50s. The Detroit vocal group consisted of high school students William "Smokey" Robinson, Warren "Pete" Moore, Clarence "Humble" Dawson, Donald Wicker, and James "Rat" Grice. Not too long after the group formed, Wicker and Grice left and were replaced by cousins Emerson "Sonny" Rogers and Bobby Rogers, who both sang tenor, and baritonist Ronnie White replacing Dawson. The vocal quintet then changed its name to the Matadors and in 1956 Claudette Rogers joined the band after her brother Sonny was drafted. The Matadors auditioned for Jackie Wilson's manager, Nat Tarnopol, in 1956. Although Tarnopol wasn't interested, one of Wilson's songwriters, Berry Gordy, Jr., was and he soon began producing the band, which now went by the name The Miracles. Gordy produced their first single, "Got a Job," (an answer to the Silhouettes' "Get a Job") in 1958. The first hit for both the group and the label, 1960's "Shop Around," reached

KAVAN Main Street Stage – Friday 6 p.m. 7:45 p.m. 10 p.m. Kavan is a nationally recognized Elvis Tribute Artist and performs as Elvis in all eras of his career: The ‘50s Rockabilly years, the ‘60s movie years/‘68 comeback special and the ‘70s Vegas years. Kavan specializes in the early ‘50s years (specifically 1954-1957) using exact replicas of Elvis’ original costumes in his authentic concert tribute. Kavan has been a fan of Elvis Presley for his entire life and has been performing on stage since the age of three. He was chosen among all the current American ETAs (Elvis tribute artists) for a 2007 BBC television special on ETAs that was filmed in London, England. Kavan won the honor of “The World’s #1 Rock & Roll Elvis.”

Born Again Floozies Franklin Street Cabaret – Friday 6 p.m. 8:30 p.m. The Floozies blast tuba, trombone, tap dance and stomp orchestral percussion. The singer plays guitar the way most people play the piano. Formed in 2003 the Floozies first toured Ireland in a horse-drawn gypsy wagon, and have cast a spell on thousands of listeners. Their 2007 debut full-length shot up the CMJ (College Music Journal) charts (#11 Top Adds, #74 on the Top 200 for 6 weeks) and garnered excited reviews internationally; they have performed at music festivals and some of the best music venues in cities such as Nashville, Chicago, Atlanta, Detroit, Louisville and Indianapolis; plus, the band has appeared in internationally distributed music publications, including Paste and Magnet magazines.

The Romantics Show Stage – Saturday 5 p.m. 8:15 p.m. The Romantics started out as four factory workers from Detroit, Mich.; Wally Palmar (vocals/guitar), Mike Skill (guitar/vocals), Rich Cole (bass/vocals) and Jimmy Marinos (drums/vocals). They originally formed in February 1977, releasing their debut single, “Little White Lies”/”I Can’t Tell You Anything”, on their own Spider Records. It was followed by “Tell It To Carrie”/“First In Line” on Greg Shaw’s Bomp Records label in 1978. The music was up-tempo and pop-like, much in the vein of the Flamin’ Groovies or the Raspberries, epitomized by the euphoric “What I Like About You”. In the ‘80s the Romantics developed a much more sophisticated, and familiar, U.S. rock sound. Coz Canler (guitar/vocals) was brought in to the line-up on 1981’s Strictly Personal, but real success followed in 1983 when the band achieved a US Top 5 hit with “Talking In Your Sleep”. Former Blondie drummer Clem Burke joined the line-up in 1990. Several live albums and compilations kept the Romantics name in the record shops until the belated release of a new studio album, 2003’s 61/49. They remain a popular touring unit.

ABBA Gold Funfest Stage – Saturday 3:30 p.m. 6:15 p.m. 9:45 p.m. ABBA Gold - The Definitive ABBA Experience is a completely live re-creation of a live ABBA concert in the late ‘70's/early ‘80's. Each player is hand-picked for performance and personality. The costumes are replicas of the most popular ABBA outfits. ABBA details from around the world have been collected for authenticity.

Alcohol

Co-Grand Marshal

Assorted alcoholic beverages will be sold during the Decatur Celebration.

DOUG WILSON, host of TLC’s “Moving Up”

T

he RK Dixon Razzle Dazzle Goodtimes Parade is proud to announce Doug Wilson as cogrand marshal of the 2009 parade. Doug Wilson is a quintessential showman and host of Moving Up and America's Ugliest on TLC. Armed with expertise gleaned from years of working with clients such as Barbara Walters and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Doug joined the cast of TLC's series Trading Spaces in 2000 and quickly gained a reputation for design choices that purposefully push the edge of creativity. Doug's engaging television persona is credited to his Midwestern roots. Despite living in New York and being on TV, Doug couldn't have come from a less show-biz background. The Wilson family resides outside the town limits of Broadlands, Ill., population 350. He was raised on a farm that has been in his family for 150 years, and attended the University of Illinois in Champaign.

These guidelines must be followed: • Legal drinking age in Illinois is 21. • Decatur Celebration beverage staff will check festival goers’ identification to verify age. Anyone under 30 who plans to purchase and consume alcohol, must wear a wristband. • Wristbands will be issued on presentation of proof of age at any of nine ticket and identification booths. • Tickets are necessary to purchase alcoholic beverages. Tickets will be sold from 5 to 10:30 p.m. Friday; noon to 10:30 p.m. Saturday; and noon to 9 p.m. Sunday. Alcohol may be consumed up to 30 minutes

after ticket sales end. • For your enjoyment, Decatur Celebration will offer: Budweiser, Bud Light, Bacardi Silver, Sutter Home Wines, Arbor Mist and Busch NA. • Cost: $3.75 per beverage. • Vendors will refuse service to those who appear to be intoxicated and to those not wearing shirts or shoes. Festival-goers may drink alcoholic beverages from an approved Celebration cup only. • Alcohol not purchased at a festival stand will not be permitted. • Coolers are not permitted on the festival grounds. •No exceptions, guests not following these rules will be escorted off the festival grounds.

New foods to tempt your taste buds I

n 24 years the Decatur Celebration has established itself as a FOOD FESTIVAL within the street festival. Food vendors and patrons always want to try something new at this event! As you “eat your way” through the festival this year, you’ll enjoy “normal” foods like burgers, pork chops, and brats … and food on a stick like alligator or shrimp … and of course, traditional festival favorites like cotton candy, river chips, and a shake up … but be sure to

stop at these tempting “new foods” for 2009! Decatur restaurant, The Chili Bowl, debuts their Funnel Cake Fries for 2009 on North Street near the North Street Stage. This spin on the traditional funnel cake will make you proud to wear its powdered sugar mark on your face and fingers. The aroma of the new savory grilled Pork Kabob will lure you to North Street from anywhere on the festival grounds. Popular throughout the South, this treat is finally making its way to the

Midwest thanks to returning vendor Cajuns Unlimited. The Decatur Celebration continues its tradition of bringing you a variety of ethnic food with the addition of Indian cuisine this year. Experiment with the spicy flavors of Channa Masala, Chicken Curry and Lemon Rice … located on William Street between State and Franklin. Refreshing and made of 100% fruit, Juice Slush, is an irresistible new treat that will make the August heat a little more bearable. Juice Slush is available on North Park with your choice between Kiwi Strawberry and Cool Blue Razz. Main Street between Merchant and Water is now the home of Buffalo Catfish!

Seasoned and fried to perfection, all you need to do is grab and beer and sink your teeth into perfection! Sweet Meat Stick is back! D&B Food Services will serve this long-time festival favorite right where you remember it on Water Street. You know you can’t just have one … don’t worry, we won’t count. Authentic Creole Pan BBQ Shrimp features wild caught American shrimp flown in from New Orleans. Bring your Mardi Gras beads to Franklin between South Park and Main. Viva la Fajita! Make your way to Franklin between South Park and Main for an authentic sizzling steak or chicken fajita with fresh vegetables. A comfort food favorite for

the ages, Mac & Cheese is now available on the North section of Franklin Street. The origins of Soul Food can be traced back to Africa and is known as the traditional cuisine of Black Americans in the South. Whether you are curious or a connoisseur, don’t miss your chance to eat authentically prepared soul food on Franklin Street in front of the Post Office. Satisfy your sweet tooth with a fudge puppy on the North section of Franklin Street. Your favorite Gyro King now offers the gyro bowl. . . the same great U.S. Choice lamb, greek spices and tangy greek juice, just without the pita. . . less calories and delicious!

Lori Escalera, Chalk Artist and Street Painter D

ecatur Celebration is honored to host Top ten sidewalk painter, Lori Escalera, designing a Lincoln Tribute at Water and North Street. Escalera has painted streets up the California Coastline and across the nation including Texas, Illinois, Georgia, Utah, Carolina, and Florida. She even coordinated a street painting venue in Xian China before the 2008 Olympics. This artist’s street painting style includes Madonnari, Trompe L’oeil, and 3D (anamorphic) … and her artwork has earned her Featured Artist, Guest Artist, People’s Choice

Awards, and venue honors. Street Painting, Madonnari Style, dates back to 1600's in Italy. It was a way for artists to put their hat out and make money. “Madonnari” is a term

that actually denotes the chalk artists that render the Madonna. But, today the term is more general and applies to large scale chalk artists that perform for the public.

Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial motorcycle pays tribute to 16 th President’s circuit riding days

MINI PLACE features local acts D ecatur Conference Center & Hotel and Veolia Environmental Services present Mini Place, located in front of Busey Bank. Mini Place has become a place for area and regional talent to be showcased, hosting talented singers, gymnasts and musicians. Don’t miss the fun!

A

man who once split rails for a living is being honored with a chopper of his own on his 200th birthday. A Springfield businessman and the owner of a custom body shop have joined forces to create the “Circuit Rider,” a custom Harley-Davidson motorcycle that honors the 16th President from its copper-penny wheels to its split-rail tailpipes. “I felt this was a unique way to honor America’s greatest president, a man who spent a lot of time in the saddle traversing the back roads of Illinois during the mid 1800s,” said Richard Levi, President and CEO of Levi, Ray & Shoup, Inc., the man who owns the motorcycle with the “ABE 200” Illinois license plates. The “Circuit Rider” will be on display at Water and North Street. Visitors are encouraged to have their photographs taken with this unique, rolling work of art. The “Circuit Rider” features one-of-a-kind, custom copper plated wheels with Lincoln penny designs and matching copper plating on numerous small metal parts. The gas tank, rear fender, and battery covers feature airbrushed Lincoln portraits and depictions of Lincoln sites. The air cleaner is shaped like Lincoln’s stove pipe hat; the exhaust pipes look like wooden rails of the type Lincoln used to split, with an axe forming the shifter; and the foot pegs are copies of mid-1800s shackles, representing the issue of slavery. Black chrome adorns the engine cases and bolts. The “Circuit Rider” project is officially endorsed by the Illinois Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission.

Kalimbaman, Scotty Hayward at Main and State Streets S

cotty has devoted over 30 years to becoming a new age master of the kalimba. He was trained in European classical music, but always had an affinity for jazz, African, and Caribbean music. Throughout his childhood, he listened to his father's extensive collection of records from Africa and the Caribbean. He discovered the kalimba (or vice-versa) when he was 18 years old. When he was 20, he met Ryphon Gray, who was building kalimbas from his own innovative designs. Scotty became his apprentice, and they worked and performed together for two years. After that, Scotty continued developing his instruments and music on his own. In 1988, Scotty produced his first recording of solo kalimba music, "Kalimba Aquarius". In 1989, he formed The Earthmother's Majimba Band, which performed throughout the Midwest. He recorded several cassettes (including "First Earth Tour") and a CD , "Kalimba Dreams" with this band. In 1999, he reshaped the band into a jazz trio, named Majimba. "Soul of Majimba" was released in 2000. Now he has come full circle with his first solo CD, "Kalimba A La Carte". Ranging from whimsical to ethereal, this is his kalimba music in its purest form. Scotty continues to perform at jazz venues, art and ethnic fairs, clubs, and schools. He also performs as part of a Caribbean-style strolling minstrel duet, with partner, Mak Dervo. Scotty Hayward lives with his wife, Joan, and nine of their ten children in Iowa City, Iowa.
