what’s new New Attractions The Ejection Bungee’s quick release catapults the rider 45 feet in the air while harnessed around the waist. A double pulley system using bungee ropes sends the individual up but what goes up, must come down, with a few bounces in between. The corner of Water and William Streets is the place to be.
Over on State Street is an aerial view that will take the rider literally “over” State Street. From a 28 foot tower, harnessed in, a zipline drops and zooms the rider 130 feet, or about a city block. Shlebyville’s Darrell Best, a Guinness book world record holder for the World’s Fastest Wedding Chapel on Wheels, will be conducting a ceremony between Ashley LaVela and Jonathan Earnest . At the chapel, built by the show, “Trick My Truck,” the couple will be wed at 11 a.m. Saturday, after riding in the Razzle Dazzle Goodtimes Parade.
Film Festival The Land of Lincoln Credit Union 21 film project Film Festival, which displays local film makers’ creations, has its awards ceremony Friday at the Decatur Civic Center. Red carpet starts at 6 p.m. and awards will be at 7 p.m.
From noon-9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, films
will be shown in a tent on North and Water streets. Volunteering For 26 years volunteers of the Decatur Celebration gave of their own time and then had to pay for their own shirt. Not any more.
Volunteers do everything from the recycling green team, stage hands, working a game at the kid’s block to managing the parade.
“Caterpillar is sponsoring volunteer hospitality to show the Decatur Celebration volunteers how much we appreciate over 500 people giving time,” Celebration producer/director Lori Sturgill said. “This is the first year the volunteers received a free shirt.” But that is not where the appreciation ends.
“Caterpillar stepped up, having volunteer hospitality in the transfer house, a cooling off station for the volunteers,” Sturgill said. “They work so hard and it’s hot. They can get complimentary water or soda and a snack. “I think it says a lot about the fabric of our community. They are committed to the community and Celebration.”
Wine Garden The Decatur Celebration Committee has found nooks and crannies for some quieter events such as the corner of Merchant and Prairie Streets, where a wine connoisseur may sample wines from four premier Illinois wineries. The shaded parcel is an upscale
refuge from the bustle of the festival. Comfortable seating gives festival goers the opportunity to take a load off and to buy small samples, glasses and bottles of wine. Centerpieces for the tables have been created by Jody Cox of “An Affair to Remember.”
There is no admission cost to the wine tasting area. A ticket is required for sampling. Featured wineries are: Walnut Street Winery, Rochester Von Jakob Vineyard, Alto Pass Lyn-Nita Vineyard, Elkville Sleepy Creek Vinyards, Fairmount Alto Vineyards
The Wine Garden is sponsored by Brinkoetter & Associates, Miles Chevrolet, The Beach House and Wood Printing.
Alcohol will be served after noon.
A More Green Celebration Keeping the Decatur Celebration grounds clean and green takes a lot of thought and volunteers.
“You don’t deal with disposables willingly,” producer/director Lori Sturgill said, “unless you are passionate about the idea of being green through recycling.”
In its second year, the crew is a bigger volunteer force keeping the grounds clean and encouraging recycling. Last year, “we were 40 strong, all weekend long,” said Sturgill, who added in addition to last year’s recycling volunteers, others are picking up the banner and spreading their passion to encourage the social awareness of recycling and to avoid the waste that would go to a landfill. Thanks to the Macon County Environmental Management, the ClearStream containers hold recyclables such as paper cups and plastic bottles. The ClearStream containers which made their appearance in 2011 vendors will have cardboard collection boxes behind each of their stalls.
These receptacles are in addition to the hundreds of trash cans spread throughout the grounds. The Back Lot Presented by Land of Lincoln Credit Union, May, Cocagne & King, and Falcon Multimedia
A new “Indie” art and music area called “The Back Lot” will feature emerging music artists on stage, craft beer tasting, an interactive art project, and artist exhibitions. The Back Lot Stage is presented by Apt Foto Photography & Thrive Entertainment Guide. With a funky, Indy vibe this stage features emerging artists from all across the nation, including: Friday, August 3 “Indie” & Classic Rock, Decadents 5:30 pm | 8:15 pm American Roots Rock and Roll, Dan Hubbard and the Humadors 6:30 pm | 9:15 pm
Saturday, August 4 Guitar Driven Jazz & Soul, Brainchild 3:00 pm | 7:00 pm Hypnotic Guitar Driven Rock, Logos 5:00 pm | 9:00 pm
www.herald-review.com
Sunday, August 5 Midwest Folk Singer, Chicago Farmer 12:00 pm | 2:00 pm New Roots Music, Born Again Floozies 4:15 pm | 6:15 pm
Community Art Project The Decatur Area Arts Council hosts an art project for all ages. From 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and noon-5 p.m. Sunday, families and others will have the opportunity to create cards using a watercolor crayon-resist technique and printmaking from Styrofoam blocks. Both activities will be available at no charge.
Artist Exhibitions Nationally known for his music poster art, local “Indie” artist, Jon Griffin, has organized a select group of talented and diverse artists to demonstration their crafts including painting sketching and sculpting. Craft Beer Tasting Do you esteem beer as something to be savored and appreciated like good food? Visit “The Back Lot” where McGorray’s Golf & Grille will present a first-class selection of craft beers. “The Back Lot” on Water and North Streets is an interactive arts experience sure to become the new hangout spot for those who appreciate the funky things in life.
Shop ‘Til You Drop!
We all know the Celebration really begins to pulse just around dusk as the national entertainment acts begin to take stage. However there is plenty to check out during the day, including blocks upon blocks of shopping. Featuring everything from handmade jewelry to precious children’s novelties, unique gifts to beautiful furniture and home décor, handmade sauces to fine photography, our Arts and Crafts section includes over 3 blocks of handmade, creative items for sale. Arts and Crafters can be found along Water Street from North Street at the Back Lot area clear down to Main Street’s Heritage Stage. Arts and Crafts shopping has also expanded onto Prairie Street this year. Be sure not to miss a single booth, you never know exactly what treasures you’ll find! Decatur Celebration also has a number of eclectic Commercial Booths scattered across the festival. Stop at these booths to pick up freebies and information from Small Businesses, do more great shopping from vendors like Scentsy, Cookie Lee Jewelry, Dom’s Sunglasses, Decal Depot and Cutco, among many others. Be sure to take your children down to visit the Airwalk Action booth on South Franklin to create a custom bopping heads music video! Commercial Spaces are located on North Street, State Street, North Park Street and South Franklin Street.
