The Big Reunion Quick, what are the first four things that pop into your head when you think “reunion”? Family, Friends, Food and Party… most people come up with something along these lines. Play the same game with “Decatur Celebration” and bets are, you get strikingly similar answers. Thus we have our 2011 Decatur Celebration theme: The Big Reunion. Hundreds of thousands will flock to Decatur’s downtown business district this August 5, 6, and 7 to reunite with friends or family, a high school idol, a beloved staple “summer food” or the simple tradition of heading downtown for the city’s largest attraction. The massive 3day Reunion promises to evoke a nostalgic smile with headliners from the 80s, 90s and today, a Super Carnival, delicious festival food and surprise encounters with friendly faces around every corner. That’s right! Class presidents, social chairs, wingmen, and appointed family activity coordinators, Decatur Celebration has done the work for you. Along with the Reunion theme comes great, affordable travel and hotel rates, festival weekend packages and opportunities for entire classes to have meeting space at the event.

‘ NEW WHAT’S

Despite the overwhelming long-time success of the Decatur Celebration, Lori Sturgill, who just took over as director of the Celebration last year, figures there’s always room for improvement. Sturgill and her staff have added several new aspects to this year’s upcoming street festival to enhance the experience of celebration-goers. “I’m really excited about the energy and how receptive the community has been to these changes. I look forward to them going over extremely well and us having great weather,” Sturgill said. Film Festival One of the biggest additions to this year’s celebration is the Land of Lincoln Credit Union 21 Film Project, which will take place at the Avon Theater. Participants will be able to watch four-minute films inside the theatre. “People can go in and watch the films and come back out and enjoy the festival,” Sturgill said. “And then to support that, we are building a whole indie art area with a spotlight stage that focuses on emerging indie artists and music.” The film festival was started four years ago by the credit union, though this is the first time it will be part of the Celebration. It was created with the idea in mind to give filmmakers a platform to showcase their work, and the only “rule” is that the credit union’s logo or tagline be somewhere in the film, even simply in the background. “It’s about both amateurs and professionals sending in their work and having the ability to have a platform and be featured,” said Chris Phillips, Land of Lincoln Credit Union’s vice president of marketing. “The big thing to me is that there’s something about seeing your film on the big screen that is powerful and for the general public to see it as well.” Land of Lincoln has received films from all over the country for the project, as well as a few from abroad, Phillips said. There will also be a group of local artists who will be demonstrating their craft all weekend, from painters to sculptors. Craft beers will also be available for sampling from McGorray’s Golf and Grille in this area, between Water and North streets. For those who wish to partake in the crafts, there will be a community art project where people can paint a four-inch square that will become part of a large collage that will eventually be displayed for the public in the community. “We started (this area) last year with a spotlight stage, and it went over extremely well,” Sturgill said. “There is a lot of great talent not just locally but also nationally who are trying to break into the entertainment world, and the Decatur Celebration gives them a lot of exposure. We want people to be able to say ‘they’re huge now, and I saw them at the Decatur Celebration!’”

Carnival Excitement

A new carnival by Miller Spectacular Shows, located in the Decatur Civic Center parking lot, will offer attendees of the Celebration “fresh, modern and exciting new rides that have never been at the festival before,” Sturgill said. “It’s a very nice presentation.” During the Thursday evening before the weekend-long Celebration begins, the new carnival will hold a preview night, where an $18 wristband will buy you all you can ride for that night. However, you can still get 12 tickets for $10 if you don’t want to buy a wristband, Sturgill pointed out. Each ride takes a minimum of two tickets. “We really felt like the carnival needed freshening up, and we went to bid and this is the carnival we chose. It had new rides that would energize people again,” Sturgill said. “We wanted to bring in some new things and get people excited again.” Good Times Stage The Good Time Stage has always been on Main Street, but this year, it will be formatted to country music for the first time. “Over the past few years, we’ve had country artists here and there, and they always brought in huge crowds,” Sturgill said. “Our country music station 95Q is one of the huge supporters in our network. They are on board to help promote and support that.” “There are so many talented groups to choose from, especially in Nashville, not too far away from us,” she added. Wine Garden Festival-goers this year can find a wine garden on Prairie Street in which to sample delicious wines from 7 different Illinois wineries. Sturgill said her office is working with the Illinois Grape Growers and Vintners Association to recruit the wineries for the garden. “It’ll all be under a tent and nicely shaded and a cooler spot to hang out because it does get hot,” Sturgill said. “It will be a very upscale patio area.” The nearby Heritage Stage will also be formatted to blues music to “go along with the wine and blues feel,” Sturgill said. There will be no admission to get into the tent; tickets for sampling or full glasses of wine will be available for purchase. • Pheasant Hollow Winery (Whittington, IL) • Fox Valley Winery (Oswego, ) • Lyn-Nita Vineyards (Elkville, IL) • Ridgeview Winery (Sterling, IL) • Fox Creek Winery (Olney, IL) • The Village Vineyard & Winery (Camp Point, IL) • Kite Hill Vineyards (Carbondale, IL) Wine case sales are available at the Wine Garden with pick up at The Decanter. Family Fun Zone Surrounding the Christian Music Stage on Main and Franklin, a new Family Fun Zone will be located for dance troupe performances and family karaoke.

“We’ll have a street performer there – The Strong Man John Beatty, who incorporates kids and people into his show. He was on (NBC television show) America’s Got Talent last year,” Sturgill said.

Department, said he is glad that the Celebration organizers are going about this new initiative “in the right way.”

Local dance groups, a karate demo group and even an adult country line dancing group will be performing in the Family Fun Zone.

Shumaker expects to see a large volume of cardboard recycled from the Celebration and hopes for a lot of recycled containers, depending on the cooperation of the festival-goers. Midwest Fiber will run the container materials through its material recovery facility in Normal.

“The Street Jam Stage is local talent and so is the dance performance area. All of the proud moms, grandmas and dads can come watch their kids perform,” Sturgill said. Debbie’s Dance Studio A More Green Celebration The Decatur Celebration prides itself on being an extremely clean environment, with 425 trash cans spread throughout the festival and trash being efficiently picked up at the end of each day. This year, 250 recycling containers will accompany the hundreds of trash cans at the Celebration. “We’re recycling this year for the first time,” Sturgill said. “Pepsi cups, water bottles, beer cups – anything paper or plastic can be recycled.” Sturgill said she was inspired to add the recycling component to the festival after attending a music conference last fall, where recycling at music festivals was a trending topic. “It’s important to me personally as well. And the city recently re-structured its trash hauling to include single stream recycling, so people don’t have to pre-sort their recycling,” she said. “Everything was aligning to say this is the time to try this.” Ron Shumaker, president of Midwest Fiber Recycling, which will be handling the recycling efforts along with the Macon County Environment Management

“I think it’s great; it needed to be done,” he said.

The new recycling bins are very “userfriendly,” Sturgill said, with clear bags so you can recognize the contents and a lid with hole openings the size of a cup. “We ask that people to use common sense and realize that they should only put recycling in there,” she said. “But I think everybody is on board for that.”

Arthur “Flash” Johnson Multiple-title winning boxer. Accomplished musical artist. Cancer survivor. Philanthropist. Most people would be more than proud to carry even one of these titles in their lifetime. One very special man, Arthur Anthony Johnson, humbly carries them all—and has made it his ongoing mission to strive toward excellence and conquer the world, one gospel song at a time. According to his website, Arthur “Flash” Johnson was the first American boxer to win 12 National Championships and first American boxer to win Gold in the Inaugural Goodwill Games. As a professional he won several championship titles; Flyweight North American Title, the Bantamweight World Title, and 2 times Jr. Featherweight World Title. Outside the ring, Anthony has a passion for music. Anthony has his own album, titled, “Greatest Moments faze 2” and a DVD documentary "Greatest Comeback". Along with his solo career, Anthony has been composing and performing for many years, sharing the stage with Gospel artists such as Fred Hammond, CeCe Winans, and legendary R&B group, The Delphonics, among others. Anthony works with the Leukemia Society to promote the importance of giving blood and bone marrow registration. His philanthropic interest hits close to home; in June of 2008, Anthony was diagnosed with acute promyelocytic leukemia. Anthony’s strength and faith helped him pull through the battle and he is now in remission. Through it all, Anthony has created the Arthur Johnson Charitable Foundation, geared toward helping our youth to stay in school, off drugs, and to pursue their education. Arthur will serenade Celebration crowds with his Gospel Singer/Songwriter hat on Friday night. He will also celebrate his successful boxing career as he serves as Co-Grand Marshall to the Razzle Dazzle Goodtimes Parade Saturday morning.
