Beautiful music Jennifer Song made a lasting impression in 2010 debut By Rex Spires For the Herald & Review DECATUR - Professional athletes hope to make their debuts a memorable one. Few do it in the auspicious manner Jennifer Song did when she shot a finalround 61 at Hickory Point Golf Club for a runaway victory in the 2010 LPGA Futures Players Championship. In a remarkable display of shotmaking accuracy and almost unbelievable putting skill, the 20-yearold broke the tournament record with a 19-under-par total and a six-shot victory . Even a year later she can hardly believe what she did in her pro debut. “Honestly, I don’t know what I was doing out there. I was just playing one shot at a time and trying to focus on the pace of the putts. It was just like magic,” she said. It was indeed magic. Many athletes strive mentally to reach a zone where they are relaxed and performing the way their training has taught them. The concentration level is so strong everything else is blocked out. Every athlete hopes to attain that kind of focus but rarely does. Song admitted that she was in that kind of zone. “I felt like I could make every shot and drain every putt. It was a lot of fun,” she said. The 9-under-par final round was a personal best and the winning margin was a tournament record. The victory enabled the former amateur and college phenom to follow in the footsteps of Lorena Ochoa and Vicky Hurst who made their professional debuts a success by winning Futures events at Hickory Point. “It’s definitely a great honor,” Song said, immediately following her triumph. “Lorena is my role model. I have always looked up to her. Following in her path is the greatest path I could follow.” Securing her place in the hearts of
many Decatur residents was an announcement she made after accepting her trophy last June. Following through on a promise to her parents, Song said she was donating a third of her $17,500 winning prize money to local charities. One of those was to the Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Central Illinois, the Boys and Girls Club of Decatur and the LPGA Junior Golf Program under the direction of the Decatur Park District. She said she was doing it for the children who do not have the support Song / 10

she received from her parents. The announcement brought tears from the fans and tournament officials who were on hand for the trophy presentation. Chris Olsen, director of community and government Relations for Tate & Lyle, sponsors of the Futures event in Decatur, said, “She just didn’t impact the Decatur community with four days of good golf, she’s managed to make a lasting impact that transcends the tournament,” he said. The four days of golf in which every round was in the 60s despite troubling weather conditions will go down as one of the most memorable in tournament history. Many of the former champions here, such as Ochoa and Hurst, have gone on to become fixtures on the LPGA Tour. Making an impact on that tour hasn’t been as easy for Song, who turned pro after two seasons at the University of Southern California in which she attained All-American status each time
and being selected to play for the United States in the Curtis Cup team competition. A former U.S. Amateur and U.S. Women’s Public Links champion, she finished in a tie for 13th in the 2009 U.S. Women’s Open as an amateur. As an LPGA rookie, she said in a recent interview she was finding it difficult to find the kind of consistency she’s used to having. “I’m used to playing in a competition every week. The tour schedule is such that you don’t play every week,” she said. Although she did well in her first LPGA event in Australia this season, she said not being able to play in every tournament because of her rookie status has been slightly frustrating. “We just have to keep practicing and try to fight through it,” she said. With her background of success and mental toughness, few doubt that Song will reach the level of success she expects from herself. hrprojects@herald-review.com

Charity Case
FUTURES tournament continues to benefit local organizations By Rex Spires For the Herald & Review or more than a quarter century, the Futures Golf Tournament and charity have gone hand in hand. While the figures may be modest compared to some national charitable fundraisers they still register in a large way for the local charities who have benefited over the years. Just ask the likes of leaders with Big Brothers/Big Sisters, the Boys and Girls Club of Decatur and the LPGA Junior Girls Golf program, who were the recipients of last year’s tournament winner Jennifer Song’s generosity. Song donated one third of her $17,500 winnings to local charities, resulting in those three organizations each receiving for nearly $2,000, producing a hefty boost to their budgets during the post recession era when everyone seemed to be tightening their belts. It was a gesture hailed by one and all in the community and prompted Chris Olsen, director of community and government relations for Tate & Lyle to say it may have been a determining factor in the company continuing its sponsorship for this year’s tournament. He said there were two factors contributing to the feeling the 2010 tournament was a success, Song’s generous donation and the obvious effort of Futures Tour players to express their appreciation to sponsors, volunteers and community members while they were in Decatur. “Jennifer’s gesture was the capstone of a number of different things that
F
happened with the players,” he said. “We felt there was so much interaction by the players and having the players market the tour and the event was a key element in what we were seeking.” Tournament Director Cindy Deadrick-Wolfer said the recipients of charity offerings this season will be Partners In Education, the Heritage Behavioral Health Center, Big Brothers/Big Sisters and the awardwinning Eisenhower High School Elite Energy Show Choir. All of those groups will be serving in a variety of volunteer capacities in support of the tournament. In fact, Renee Stivers, director of Partners In Education, is in charge of recruiting and organizing tournament volunteers. “That’s a big job and a very timeconsuming one.” Deadrick-Wolfer said. “Volunteers are very important to us. Without them, it would be almost impossible to hold the tournament “ Stivers said she is pleased the organization will be a beneficiary of a donation that will help further the program’s mission, which is to provide meaningful educational experiences to the students of Macon County and parts of DeWitt, Piatt and Shelby counties. “We recently determined that our activities last year touched the lives of 5,000 students in the area we serve,” she said. Zach Shields, director of Big Brothers/Big Sisters, said he and board members have been “pounding the Charity / 15

pavement selling tickets for the golf ball drop competition” in appreciation for the gifts the organization has received. That event is one of several special fundraisers that officials hope aid in defraying tournament expenses. The Heritage Behavioral Center will provide staff to serve food in the hospitality tent and the Elite Energy Show Choir members and booster club will be involved in handling parking responsibilies. “Many people are aware of the services provided by the Heritage
Center,” Deadrick-Wolfer said. Director Diana Knaebe has said she and the center’s staff are eager to fulfill that role to give back to the community for the support they have received. “The Elite Energy Show Choir is well known throughout Central Illinois and the entire state for that matter,” Deadrick-Wolfer said. “We hope when people realize our minimal $3 parking fee will go to support these young people it will be more palatable to them.” hrprojects@herald-review.com
