Jenner Sales offers great opportunities

By COURTNEY WESTLAKE For the Herald & Review

HARRISTOWN – For Jenner Sales, attending local job fairs means not only recruiting for open positions but is also a means of advertisement for the company, which is tucked away outside of Decatur. “We attend a lot of the local job fairs because of where we’re located; we’re out in the country in Harristown, and a lot of people don’t know we exist,” said Jessie Smalley, human resources director for

Jenner Sales. “A lot of positions are available at our facility here, but people often don’t even know we’re here. So I try to attend even if we don’t have immediate openings, to advertise we’re out here.”

Veolia Environmental Services has great career opportunities By COURTNEY WESTLAKE For the Herald & Review DECATUR – Veolia Environmental Services uniquely offers its employees the chance to work for a company with both a local and global presence. “We’re different because we have a larger parent company who gives us the resources to provide good benefits, opportunities and is able to focus on safety,” said Jim O’Connell, marketing and communications specialist for Veolia. “It’s the best of both worlds – a great company locally with the backing of the company on a global level.” Veolia Environmental Services is the world’s largest waste services company, with more than 100,000 employees in 42 countries, according to

the company website. The Decatur branch, Veolia ES Midwest LLC, offers a complete line of refuse removal services, including residential, commercial and industry hauling. Veolia in Decatur employs about 30 to 35 people, O’Connell said, and they are trying to fill about five positions currently. Open jobs include drivers, a maintenance manager, shop position and route supervisor. “We’re looking to grow, so this is a big part of it,” he said. Veolia chooses to attend job fairs to recruit for open positions because the company has a lot of success finding potential employees, O’Connell said. “It depends on the market in the city and where we’re looking to

expand, but generally speaking, jobs fairs are one of the best ways to find people,” he said. “People are being proactive and going out to find jobs. We get a good turnout when we participate in job fairs.” Veolia offers a lot of benefits to employees and treats its employees with care, O’Connell said. “We have a motto among our employees – it’s not service first, it’s safety always,” he said. “Safety is a big part of what we do. We do a solid screening with our drivers to make sure they meet the criteria with proper licensing, a CDL license. Safety is above being ranked; it’s part of everything we do.” O’Connell encouraged potential job

Putting together winning resume and cover letter By COURTNEY WESTLAKE For the Herald & Review DECATUR - In previous years, a job applicant could compile one resume and cover letter and send it out to many different companies during a job search. This practice is changing today, said Georganne Sadomytschenko, owner of Human Resources Inc., a human resource consulting firm. “People are customizing each cover letter to enhance the skills they have for a specific position,” she said. “Your resume and cover letter should be properly packaged for each job. Know what you’re selling and to whom; emphasize those skills.” According to MSN’s CareerIgniter, companies use resumes as the basis

for the first cut when determining who should be invited into the screening and interview process. A resume determines whether the applicant should be considered, and you don’t have to be a perfect match for the job description to be considered. Resume writing is one of the basics of job hunting, and something that brings frustration to many of those on the

hunt. A resume should be easy to read, concise, free of any grammar or punctuation errors and above all, should showcase your professional story in an engaging way. “Don’t underestimate the time it takes to put a resume together,” Sadomytschenko

said. “You should always constantly be updating your resume, looking at ways to make it look better, and capturing your skills, experience and knowledge that you obtain.” To begin a resume, you could look online for examples, but try to stay away from using a template, which can be obvious to potential employers, Sadomytschenko said. Most schools offer career planning services, which include resume writing, and there is a lot of material available online for help. Additionally, don’t forget to have your resume reviewed and critiqued by others. “It’s always a work in progress,” Sadomytschenko said. new job, Sadomytschenko noted. “If you don’t have a job, you need to be spending at least eight hours a day looking for a job,” she said. “You’ve got to continuously network, use your friends, make a large amount of new contacts a month, and constantly look, research and apply to companies in your market and field. You may want to customize your resume and cover letter and send them directly to the executives in charge.” “Try to make an impact, but be professional,” she added. “If you’re sending your resume to the CEO and bypassing human resources, it must be a clean, professional product. Using social media is a new trend in resume writing, Sadomytschenko said. People are utilizing the capabilities of

sites like LinkedIn to showcase their professional experience. “There are also tools like blogs and electronic portfolios. In education, you can post your writings, research and CV,” she said. “For example, an artist can post art or music online. You could then put a blurb or link to that on your resume.” A good flow is also important when creating a resume, Sadomytschenko said. “A good resume will highlight your professional profile, your skills, what you can bring to the table, and tells your story,” she said. “Customize your resume to really tell your story, but with a nice flow.”

Successfully Transition to Your Second Career Many men and women reach their 50s and 60s and decide the adventure of a new challenge is simply too hard to resist. Oftentimes, this new challenge comes in the form of a second career. Though the United States Department of Labor notes it's difficult to pinpoint how many career changes the average worker undergoes during his or her lifetime, career coaches typically say men and women will undergo between three and seven career changes during their lifetime. Of course, such estimates no doubt include career changes at the onset of a one's professional life, when many people are not precisely sure what they want to do for a living. For older workers, the uncertainty lies less in what they want to do and more in if they can pull it off. For those who have already decided what they want to do, consider the following tips to help ensure that dream becomes a reality. • Be patient. Aside from being qualified, the most important thing a person changing careers can be is patient. A successful career change does not happen overnight. Some career changes might require returning to school. Others might not require a new degree but might require an established professional start from the bottom up. Whatever the situation, it's best to remain patient. If your new career is worth pursuing, be patient enough to see it through.

• Network. Networking is often seen as an opportunity to advance within your own industry. However, networking can be just as valuable when changing careers. People within your network might be able to introduce you to new contacts outside of your industry. These contacts, even if they don't have a job to offer, can often provide valuable insight into the industry you're attempting to enter. • Volunteer. If your second career is going to be a complete 180 from your current field, it might help to volunteer and gain some experience before beginning a job search. Volunteering can prove beneficial in many ways. First and foremost, it provides potentially valuable experience you likely don't have, and that experience may help down the road when you begin looking for a full-time position. • Be flexible. In today's job market, the flexible candidates are more likely to be successful. When changing careers, be as flexible as possible. Determine if relocation is a viable option, and assess your financial situation to determine how much financial flexibility you have. Career changes often come at the expense of a smaller salary. If your financial situation does not allow for a reduction in salary, now might not be the right time to change careers.

Be prepared

JOB FAIR 17

How to sell yourself for a new job By COURTNEY WESTLAKE For the Herald & Review DECATUR - The power of preparation is never more evident than for those who are competing with dozens of other people in pursuit of a new job. At job fairs, preparing before the actual fair could help you stand out among the competition. “Stay away from ‘what

positions do you have open?’” advised Georganne Sadomytschenko, owner of Human Resources Inc., a human resource consulting firm. “Someone who is prepared is going to know who is going to be there and research the company.” Sadomytschenko encouraged job fair-goers to go online and research a company’s mission,

vision, culture, key qualities and current job openings. Many companies publish their job openings and requirements online, she said.

{

“Know what you can do and can bring to the table. Make sure you can communicate that, and practice the interview...”

}

“The reason you do this is so you can see if the company is really right for you, you can have good, quality discussion with the representative at the table, and you’re selling your strengths,” she said. “Oftentimes someone walks up and they say ‘well what do you got open?’ Make sure you’re prepared to have that discussion.” According to the Illinois WorkNet Center, job fair goers should prepare answers to openended questions, such as “tell me about yourself,” “how can you contribute to our organization?” and “why do you want this job?” Even if a company doesn’t have an opening in your particular field but you are still interested in potentially working for that company in the future, you should still make a connection, Sadomytschenko said. “If they don’t have an opening, you can still go to the booth and promote yourself,” she said. “Know yourself and who you’re selling to. You want to have a competent discussion on what you could do for that company as a future employee.” There is a definite balance between being assertive and outgoing versus being too aggressive, Sadomytschenko said.

Sell your positive qualities and get your point across, but don’t dominate the conversation or be overly eager. “Know what you can do and can bring to the table. Make sure you can communicate that, and practice the interview, whether it’s practicing at home or practicing with friends,” Sadomytschenko said. As for dress, professional business dress is always recommended for a job fair – no jeans or tennis shoes. Don’t forget to have copies of your resume on hand, but keep in mind that many companies now only accept resumes online. Websites can often be a great resource for preparing for a job fair and a job search in general. The Illinois WorkNet Center (illinoisworknet.com) offers information about setting goals, writing a resume and cover letter, preparing for an interview and much more. Sadomytschenko even recommended going online to coaching sites or job search sites like YouTube.com, CareerBuilder.com, Indeed.com and Simplyhired.com and searching for videos about preparing for an interview or job fair to pick up more tips or see examples of what to do and not do at career fairs. “I can’t stress enough that you shouldn’t be walking up and only asking about openings,” she said. “You’re starting to build that relationship (with a company); being prepared is very helpful.”
