Tips to follow for a successful job fair By KAREN ALLEN Workforce Investment Solutions For the Herald & Review Do you hope to land a job at a job fair? If so, there are several things you need to think about and do prior to the event. • Don’t go to the job fair unless you are serious about your job search. • Decide what to wear. For the record, pajama bottoms or sweatpants are not appropriate. Still, year after year people attend a job fair wearing inappropriate attire. Times are hard, and while it’s not required that you go out and buy a new suit, it is critical that you look professional when you meet with an employer. There are many nice thrift shops that sell inexpensive slacks and

shirts that would be perfect to wear to a job fair. You want to stand out, but not in a negative way. • Figure out who you are taking with you. The correct answer to this question is no one. If you have children, do not take them with you. If it’s difficult to hire a babysitter, consider you and a friend taking turns babysitting each other’s children while you take turns attending the job fair. Also, your friends or parents should not attend the job fair with you. If they provide a ride to the event, they should wait for you in the car or in the lobby. This is your opportunity to talk face to face with employers who have job openings. If you take someone with you, the employer may get the wrong impression about your ability to find a babysitter or a job

on your own. • Review your resume. Research shows that employers spend less than one minute deciding if you have the skills they are looking for. Work on your resume prior to the day of the job fair. Your resume should entice the employer. It’s important to remember that your resume is the first chance for an employer to see what skills and qualifications you have for their job openings. If your resume is too long, hard to follow or has errors, the employer will put it aside quickly. A resume that outlines your skills and experience for the job will give you an advantage over other job seekers. If you need help with your resume, visit the Decatur workNet Center at 757 W. Pershing Road,

from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. • Decide which employers you plan to talk to. If you plan to talk to a specific employer, you need to have knowledge about the company and its products or services. It’s easy to research most companies on the Internet. If you hope to be offered a job by attending a job fair, the more knowledge you have about your own qualifications and the employers requirements, the better your chances. • Know what you want to say about yourself. Prepare a 20-second “elevator speech” that will sell you to an employer. This includes your name, the type of job you are looking for, and how your experience, skills and accomplishments will benefit your new employer. Be sure

Continued from Page 4

to practice this a few times prior to the job fair so you feel comfortable sharing with a potential employer. You only have a short time with the employer so you want to use that time wisely. • Know what questions you want to ask the employers. Asking questions will show the employer you are interested in the job. Questions to consider could include: What are the biggest challenges of the position? What type of training do you offer a new employee in this position? When will you contact a candidate for an interview? These types of questions show the employer that you are interested in the job and that you are willing

to learn new skills. Do not ask questions about salary or benefits and do not ask about the company, you should have already researched the company. There is a lot of competition for the limited positions that employers have available. It’s important that you realize you never get a second chance to make a first impression. When you meet an employer for the first time, make it count. Look them in the eyes and offer a firm handshake. Let them know what position you are interested in and why you are the best candidate for the job. Ask the employers for business cards. Then, after the job fair, send them a note thanking them for their time, telling them that you are still interested in the job,

DECATUR — You just stepped on to an elevator with the head of the human resource department of a company you want to work for. You know not to discuss the weather, future lunch plans or your kids’ soccer scores. And 30 seconds is not a lot of time to explain your qualifications. What do you say? The elevator speech is just one of the topics that will be discussed during the seminar “How to Conduct an Effective Job Search in the 21st Century” during the Herald & Review Job Fair. Dana Miller, an employment specialist at Workforce Investment Solutions, will conduct the seminar from 11:15 a.m. to noon.

Other topics Miller will discuss: • Determine what you want or need in a job. What is important to your lifestyle? What questions do you ask yourself regarding what is important in a job? • Research employers who offer jobs in which you are qualified. Know what the business is and what they do. “Networking,” Miller suggests. “There are a lot of jobs that aren’t advertised.” • The importance of a good resume. Miller will suggest ways to avoid “getting your resume thrown into the trash rather than someone looking at it.” • Filling out an application. Miller advises job seekers always come prepared. “Have an extra pen.” During the seminar, she will discuss other preparations for filling

out applications. • During the interview process, employers may ask open-ended questions, such as “Give me an example when…” or “Tell me about a time when…” Miller will discuss how to give a threepart answer. “It’s more like you are telling the interviewer a story,” she said. • Never underestimate the importance of a thank-you note. But when do you send a thank-you? After the first meeting? After the interview? How effective is it?

Training for the right opportunity By THERESA CHURCHILL H&R Senior Writer DECATUR — There are things to think about before going back to school to qualify for a new job. Chief among them are what you’re interested in doing, whether you plan to continue working while taking classes and how soon you want to get your degree. “People need to look at their lifestyle,” said Gail Crookshank, director of Millikin University’s PACE program. “Can they leave their job or their home to take a class?” Joseph Havis, director of admission at the university, said it’s also important to make sure there’s a market for the skills and the degree you’re considering. PACE is an option for those

who want to keep working and earn a bachelor’s degree about as quickly as a traditional, full-time student could. The program offers bachelor’s degrees in accounting, early childhood education, elementary education, management, nursing RN to BSN and organizational leadership in an accelerated, evening format. Those who already have a bachelor’s degree can earn an educator certification. Students take classes one at a time and each generally meets once or twice a week, from 6-10 p.m. either Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday for eight to 10 weeks. “We really value giving students the opportunity to work with the professor and

other students face-to-face,” Havis said. Crookshank said PACE students who have a two-year degree or equivalent credits and can earn a bachelor’s degree in four semesters. “This is also a good option for parents of young children,” she said. “We have a lot of single parents who rely on a family member or friend to watch their children one night a week.” Traditional classes are available to prospective students who work during PACE class times or seek a different degree. Marcus Brown, vice president of student success at Richland Community College, said Richland also offers adults of all ages a pathway back to school that isn’t overwhelming. He said college offers a variety of

associate degree programs that can be completed at the student’s pace. Popular options include nursing, technology (engineering, information and surgical), bilingual education, health records and information management, Brown said. Classes are available at different times of day on campus and many are also available online. Brown said a prospective student’s best bet is to go to Richland’s Website and click on the myRichland option to see how far along they may already be toward earning a specific degree. Another option is to call the college at (217) 875-7211, ext. 267.

Millikin University’s Gail Crookshank and Joe Havis will lead a seminar on adult education from 1:15-2 p.m. at the Herald & Review Job Fair. The next open house for Millikin University’s PACE program will be 4:30-6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 29, in the lower level of Richards Treat University Center, East Room. Call (217) 420-6771

DECATUR — It’s been said you never get a second chance to make a first impression. That’s especially true when it comes to job fairs and job interviews, said Dana Miller, an employment specialist with Workforce Investment Solutions. “A job fair or interview is really a job seeker’s opportunity to make a good impression,” she said. “And at a job fair, employers can see what you have on before you even get to them. So if it’s inappropriate, they can screen you out before you even get to their booth.” Having seen job seekers in everything from suits and pencil skirts to halter tops, pajama bottoms and house slippers, Miller said she has accrued a lot of interesting

stories over the years. Making sure you don’t become one of those stories is the reason behind a Dress for Success Fashion Show, presented by Mr. John’s School of Cosmetology, that will be part of the Herald & Review Fall Job Fair. The fashion show will be from 12:30-1 p.m. Amy Coakley, a stylist and artistic director for Mr. John’s, said students from the cosmetology school will be modeling outfits that are appropriate for job interviews — and some that aren’t — so that job fair attendees will have a better idea of what to wear to look their best and what they need to avoid. With outfits supplied by Walmart, Worn Again, JC Penney and Kohl’s, Coakley said the school also wants to emphasize that putting your best foot forward doesn’t have to cost a lot of money.

“We want people to understand that looking appropriate and feeling your best doesn’t have to cost a fortune,” she said, noting that the students hope to find some good interview outfits on clearance racks. “We also want people see that their hair and makeup also don’t need to be extreme or expensive, either.” Miller agreed. “I know interview clothing can be expensive, but you can go to thrift stores and find pants and shirts that are nice and don’t cost a fortune.” Coakley said she hopes the fashion show leaves attendees feeling more confident as they head to job fairs and potential job interviews. “This is going to be a fashion show, but also informational,” she explained. “We’re going to have models come out in outfits, but at the end, we’ll also have all of the

We just want people to feel good, too, because the better you feel the better you interview.” Miller, who will speak at the job fair, also emphasized some clothing choices job seekers should avoid when attending job fairs and job interviews. “You should not wear flipflops or shorts,” she said, “and you should avoid tightfitting clothing, dangling earrings, short skirts or bracelets that make noise.” She noted that women who worry a shirt may be too lowcut for an interview should

also always wear a camisole or tank top underneath it. “You need to make sure you’re covered up,” she said. In terms of men, Miller said wearing a hat is not appropriate for an interview and that too much cologne can be off-putting. She added that men also need to make sure that if they have facial hair, it is trimmed and neat in appearance. Miller said a neat, professional appearance can go a long way for all job seekers. “As long as someone is clean and dressed nicely and appropriately, they should be OK,” she said. “Just try to be as neat and conservative as possible.”

Temporary jobs can provide steady work By DONNETTE BECKETT H&R Staff Writer After arriving in Decatur more than a year ago, Ordel McClendon needed a job. She and her husband left Atlanta for a position at a local church. After having success through a temporary agency in Georgia, McClendon began her search with Innovative Staff Solutions in Decatur. Within a few weeks, she began a job as a data analyst at Tate & Lyle North America. “I was surprised at how quickly the process took,” McClendon said. “It was such a quick turnaround.” Since employment rates have been down and many have had their unemployment or severance packages come to an end, applicants have turned to temporary agencies to make ends meet. These agencies have broadened their customer base to include the basic entry level person, experienced managers and those with a master’s degree.

“Looking for a job is a job,” said Karen Lay, Innovative Staff Solutions branch manger. “It’s a lot of hard work.” Temporary agencies bring the employees and employers together. “It is good for the company and good for the person looking for an opportunity,” Lay said. “We can help people get into a company they’ve been trying and trying to get into.” This is possible through the relationships and partnerships between businesses and temp agencies. The temp agencies learn what businesses want and often place an employee shortly after the first meeting. And the businesses know where to search. Heather Emmerich, data enrichment lead with Tate & Lyle, has a working relationship with various temp agencies. “That’s the first place I go,” she said. “I don’t have to go through the HR red tape.” Companies will continue their relationship with the temporary

agency even after an employee has been placed. “We make sure they that they are going to fit into their environment,” Lay said. For many job seekers, they may have an idea of where they want to go, but are unable to get a foot in the door. “There are chances to try a company out,” Lay said. The applicant may ask themselves, “Is this really what they want to do?” The employee is just as important as the business to a temp agency. Throughout the process, employees gain knowledge valuable to the future. They are able to increase their skill level to make them more marketable for other positions down the road. McClendon is looking forward to that future with Tate & Lyle or wherever the temporary agency sends her. “The company is investing their time and giving me the knowledge,” she said. “Hopefully I’ll get full-time employment.”

Innovative Staff Solutions will be on hand at the Herald & Review Job Fair to review resumes. Below are suggestions for a basic resume assembly. • The resume must be neat and clear of any scribbles or blemishes. • Visual appeal is vital. Make sure it is easy to read. Subheadings should be clearly marked. • Use strong adjectives, such as “team-player” instead of words like “funny” or “sweet.” • When able, use positive examples of work history. Accomplishments describe a person’s ability to do the job better than a description of one’s personality.

Walmart associates are the heart of our business. As Sam Walton said, “Our people make the difference.” We’ve worked hard to build an environment that emphasizes integrity, respect, open communication and innovation. Whether it’s a part-time job or the career of a lifetime, working at Walmart means opportunity.

A History of Advancement, An Opportunity to Succeed • Work history listings should be organized by date, starting with the most recent employment. The list should include all employment in chronological order from the past 10 years. • Send a list of references. It is always best to be a step ahead of the other applicants. When able, secure letters of reference from previous employers on company letter head.

For tens of thousands of people every year, a job at Walmart opens the door to a better life. We offer competitive wages, good benefits and the chance to grow and build a career. We’re proud to offer jobs at all levels, including some entry-level jobs ... because entry level jobs often lead to bigger jobs. At Walmart, you can climb the ladder from a stocker or a cashier to a department manager, a store manager, and beyond. Current openings at the Decatur North location include cashier, produce stocker and various other positions. Visit our booth at the Job Fair, or visit the in store Hiring Center to apply.

Benefits Walmart offers competitive pay and benefits, including health care plans, education assistance, retirement plans, and training and development opportunities. • We offer eligible hourly store associates quarterly cash bonus opportunities, a health care plan that starts at $17 per pay period, a 401k plan with a company match, a 10% discount on merchandise, and, most of all, a chance to move up through the ranks.

JOB FAIR 15

Time for a new job? By CATHERINE CONLAN, Monster Contributing Writer For the Herald & Review Many people feel lukewarm about their jobs at some point during their careers. It’s the red flags you have to watch out for — major signs that it’s time to leave your job. Once you see a red flag, it can be time to make a serious assessment of where you are in your career and where you want to be. Here 10 signs that it’s time to start looking for another job. You’re passed over for a promotion. When this happens, find out why, says Joan Runnheim Olson of Pathways Career Success Strategies in Hudson, Wis. You may not have had the right certification or training. But if you don’t get a straight answer, it might be something more. • You don’t get along with your boss. • You’re depressed about work when you aren’t there. • Your company is acquired. • The company has had multiple rounds of layoffs. • People have stopped talking to you. • You’re not feeling challenged. • Your boss or co-workers undermine your work • Your stress has become unmanageable. • You have nightmares about your job. It can be hard to discern between short-term dissatisfaction and a deepseated unhappiness with your job, but when you see the signs, you’ll know when it’s time to leave.

A MARINE CORPS CAREER Whether you serve as enlisted or officer, as a Marine you will make more than a living—you will make a difference. You will protect our nation from a spectrum of threats, as well as conduct and participate in humanitarian efforts around the world. You will also gain a new sense of a purpose and pride that comes from making a positive difference. There are countless career opportunities within the Corps that provide the training and experience needed for a successful and rewarding career in the Corps and beyond.

Top five mistakes people make when looking for a new job By CATHERINE CONLAN Monster Contributing Writer For the Herald & Review There are many ways to give yourself the best odds when you’re looking for a job and just as many ways to ruin them. Here are five common mistakes that people make that keep them from getting the job of their dreams. Apply without a plan If you don’t have a job now, you might feel like applying for every possible job can help maximize your chances of finding something that can work for you. In fact, this doesn’t help at all and can distract you from going hard after the jobs you really have a chance with. “People who

say ‘I need to consider anything and everything’ are really doing themselves a disservice,” says Lisa Arnold, director of recruiting at Versique in Minneapolis. “A person who is general in looking for a job or in talking about what you have done is really going to be left behind in this market.” Instead, identify the job you really want and what you need to do to get it. Ignore your online presence A strong, professional online presence can be a big plus when you’re looking for a job. “I see a lot more (hiring) clients really using those tools to do more due diligence on a candidate,” Arnold says. “One of the first

thing clients ask is, ‘How many connections do you have on LinkedIn?’ That’s starting to matter.” Sharing information through your social networks about issues in your field can show hiring managers that you are plugged-in and keeping up with changes in your industry. “It will display your brand,” Arnold says. Make a laundry-list resume Many people put together resumes that are simply a travelogue of where they’ve been over their working years. This step-by-step plodding through your jobs is neither compelling nor useful to people making hiring decisions. Instead of highlighting the position and

dates you worked at, talk about skills you gained, problems you solved, and any recognition or promotions you got because of them. Make your resume less about descriptions and more about actions. “You have to have a really clear message,” Arnold says. Don’t research the company This sounds like a nobrainer, but you would be surprised at how often it happens. Take the time to research the company you’re applying at, ts core mission, its strengths and its challenges. Has it been in the news lately? Why? If it hasn’t, why not? Whether you know anything about the business will come through in

1395 S. Taylorville Rd. Decatur, IL 62521-4034 (217) 428-0711 • Fax (217) 428-0628

your cover letter and interview, so do your homework and find out what you can. Underestimate your value Once you’ve identified the job you want, spiffed up your resume and online presence, and done your homework on the company, don’t settle for less than you deserve. Find out what similar positions pay and your opportunities for advancement. “Go out there and know what your value is in the market and don’t deviate from that,” Arnold says. Too many times, she says, people tend to settle for something less. That affects the entire profession, lowering the value for the skill set.

DEFINE YOUR FUTURE BY HELPING DEFINE OURS

Five threats to your job-hunting stamina By HEATHER BOERNER Monster Contributing Writer For the Herald & Review Marathon runners know that the key to crossing the finish line first isn’t brute strength but stamina. The same goes for the job hunt. "A job search is always a mind game," says independent career counselor Cathy Severson of Santa Barbara, Calif. "You don’t know if this is going to be a sprint or a marathon. Assume it will be a marathon, and you’ll be pleasantly surprised if it’s a sprint." But it’s easy to lose stamina — and motivation — especially in this economy. Watch for these stamina killers and their solutions: 1. Ignoring feelings Been laid off? "You may feel confused, ashamed, even

depressed," says Anne Perschel, president of Germane Consulting and an organizational psychologist who coaches executives and helps employees change careers. It’s natural. But letting it fester will destroy your momentum. "Job loss is probably one of the top three stressors in life," she says. "It affects your identity and your sense of value. When you have days where you feel down, make small steps toward your goal." 2. Job or bust If the goal is just to land the job, you’re setting yourself up to fail every day you don’t get a job offer, says Severson. "You never know when an offer is going to appear," she says. "When the focus shifts to the actual tasks, the job searcher feels a greater

sense of control and is better able to handle the long haul." Try these switches: • Instead of "I will get a job in X field this year," try "I will send out five resumes this week." • Instead of "I will have three job interviews this month," try "I will call five people for informational interviews today." 3. Applying for every job It’s tempting to up your odds of an interview by applying for any job for which you’re remotely qualified. Avoid that trap, says Perschel. "(Job interviewers) will know you’re not a good fit for the job" if you apply for anything, she says. "You’ll get more rejections, fewer responses and more negative feedback." Your momentum will wane.

4. Negative people and information "How do you feel after you talk to each person in your life — drained or energized?" asks Severson. Apply that question across the board and you’ll know what, and who, is sapping your energy so you can avoid them. Talk about your job hunt with only the most energizing friends, family members and colleagues, and seek out positive acquaintances. The same goes for news: If you’re paralyzed after reading or watching the news, avoid it. You can always go back to it when you feel stronger.

out the work you’re passionate about. Not only will it keep you going, says Perschel, but doing so also has a surprise bonus: It increases your chance of landing that dream job. "Assume there are other people out there who have the same skills," says Perschel. "But that energy, commitment and passion? It can be your real differentiator."

5. Pursuing work you don’t love If you’re going after the same old work, it’ll be harder to keep trying every day. Banish mediocrity and seek
