JOB FAIR 3

Tips for a successful Job Fair By Karen Allen, Program Manager, Workforce Investment Solutions For the Herald & Review A job fair is a great opportunity for employers to meet face-to-face with qualified applicants. Job Fairs typically last four or five hours, and allows an employer the chance to collect resumes and connect with job seekers. Employers want to spend their time wisely, and take time out of their busy schedules to participate in a job fair because they can meet dozens of job seekers all in one place. Preparing for a job fair is just as important as preparing for an interview. At each job fair, employers are greeted by job seekers who are dressed inappropriately, who bring their children with them, and who do

not appear serious about their job search. Have you made any of these mistakes in the past? Do you think that might be why you are still searching for employment? Before going to this year’s job fair, do your research and come prepared! Here are some suggestions for job seekers to consider before the job fair: • Update your resume, include your most recent work history and be sure that it is error-free. Ask others to review it for accuracy. • Review the list of employers who will be at the job fair by visiting the Herald & Review website http://www.herald-review.com • Research the companies that you are interested in. This will allow you to carry on informed conversations with the employer. If you know what the company does, it could give you an edge over your

competition. • Be prepared to discuss your knowledge, skills, abilities, as well as your educational and work experience as they relate to the positions you are interested in. • Dress for success! Remember, you never get a second chance to make a first impression. From the moment you walk through the door the employers will be evaluating everything about you as a possible employee. • Do not bring your children to the job fair, ask a friend or relative to watch your children while you are gone. A job fair is no place for children. • Bring extra copies of your resume, an ink pen to complete applications, and a notepad.

Successful Job Fair Continued from Page 3 • Turn your cell phone off; you do not want to be distracted when talking with an employer. Employers come to a job fair ready to hire qualified candidates. Job seekers who are prepared, who look and act professional will be most successful. You will only have a few minutes to make a lasting impression. Imagine your conversation as a mini-interview, because in fact, that is exactly what it is. Offer a solid handshake, look them in the eye, give your 30-second elevator speech, answer any questions they may have and ask a few relevant questions to learn more about the positions they have available. Thank the employer for their time, and end by letting them know you are interested in the position (if you are), ask for their business card and ask how you should follow up with them about the position. When you are finished, walk away

and jot down a few notes regarding your conversation. This can be useful when writing your thank you note. Sadly, many job seekers do not send a thankyou note to the employers they speak to at a job fair. However, a thank you note shows the employer that you are serious about your job search, that you want the job and it may help you stand out over other candidates. I cannot guarantee you that if you follow this advice you will obtain an offer of employment, but I can guarantee you that employers will take you seriously and that your chances of landing a job will be greater. •

JOB FAIR 5

Social Networking Tips for Job Seekers By Karen Allen, Program Manager, Workforce Investment Solutions For the Herald & Review According to Dept of Labor statistics, only a small percent of jobs are ever posted; and when they are posted, the competition is fierce. Networking has always been one of the best ways to search for a job, however, with an increased use in the Internet, the focus is moving away from face-to-face contact toward virtual social networking. Job seekers are finding social media a valuable tool to network for open positions while businesses are gradually using social media to advance their recruitment efforts. What exactly is social media and social networking? Social media is a way to communicate and interact with others through the internet using on-line technology. Social media allows users to publish or access information in an inexpensive manner. The top three Social Media’s used in job searches today include

LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter, although, other social networking sites are also growing in popularity. LinkedIn has been known for its job-focused presence; however, other sights are quickly gaining recognition. Social networking is a way to connect with “friends” or “connections”. Users are required to create a “profile” that consists of personal information, which can be viewed publically, or only by one’s contacts. As with face-to-face networking, social networking will not occur without friends and connections. Friends or connections are allowed to send you messages and post comments on your profile. You are given the opportunity to join “groups”, follow employers, post a resume, etc… “Groups” allow you to connect to people with similar interests and begin conversations on certain topics. If you have read a relevant professional book, you could begin a conversation on the highlights of the book. This feature allows others to learn more about you and what your interests are. Many

businesses have “like” pages for businesses; this gives you the opportunity to connect with employers who may have job openings. Here is what you need to know before you begin networking using social media. LinkedIn is considered a place to network with colleagues and other professionals while Facebook is more apt to connect you with friends and family. Carefully crafted profile pages are critical to a successful job search. Social networking can be useful in your job search, but it can also be harmful in your job search if not used properly. The last thing you want to happen is for an employer to see inappropriate pictures or comments associated with your profile and risk the position being offered to someone else. LinkedIn has the capability to upload a resume and has other useful job search tools. In this competitive job market, individuals need to be able to identify their knowledge, skills and abilities and communicate those, as

Social Networking Continued from Page 5 well as their achievements to potential employers. If you decide to use social media in your job search take the time to do it right. Remember, it is better to have one complete profile than three different profiles that are partially completed. Once you identify key words that will help you stand out over your competition, prepare a 30second elevator speech to use when networking face to face with your contacts and potential employers. In your elevator speech, you want to be able to tell who you are, what skills you possess and what type of job you are looking for. Learn how to write an elevator speech at http://www.illinoisworknet.com/. Make sure your contacts know what type of jobs you are looking for and ask them to let you know if they hear of anything, you might be qualified for.

Remember to thank them for helping in your job search and thank them for listening to you. Social media can vastly increase your contacts and enhance your job search. Job seekers who are able to shift their mindset in regards to technology and social networking may boost their job search and be offered more opportunities when it comes to employment. Remember, social media is not just a way to market yourself, you can use it to connect with others to learn about your industry and your profession and it will allow you to approach decision makers directly. The job market is competitive right now, social media may give you the edge you need to obtain an interview and land your new position. •

Kopetz' products go around the globe By Phil Jacobs For the Herald & Review Representatives from Kopetz Manufacturing in Decatur will be at this year’s Herald & Review Job Fair searching for qualified welders, fitters, machinists, estimators and quality control inspectors. They will also be looking for an assistant plant supervisor. “We hope to hire 10 to 20 people this year,” said company president, James J. Grady, who bought the global business in 2008. “I got in just before the recession, but we have weathered the storm and are now moving forward.” While most of the shop workers are men who are members of the Boilermaker’s and Ship Builders

union, the company does employ one female welder. “It‘s not a matter of sex but rather the skillset that a potential employee brings to the job,” said John Pranschke, the company’s business development manager. And the company is not averse to hiring a recent tech school graduate who displays a flair for welding but who needs further training. “We might hire that person as a helper who would work alongside an experienced welder for 3 to 5 years until they are able to work on their own,” Grady said. Applicants hoping to work for the company have to prove they possess the necessary skills or the ability to learn.

UniQue Personnel Consultants has openings in the Decatur, Shelbyville, Pana, and Taylorville markets. “When a new applicant comes in to apply for a job as a welder, for instance, we administer a welding test that includes a visual inspection and an x-ray to determine whether or not there are any subsurface imperfections,” Pranschke explained. “The results of the test tell us pretty quickly whether or not that individual has sufficient skills to work here.” For those applicants hoping to be hired as fitters, the process is a little different. “We set them down at a large table in the boardroom and layout a detailed engineering drawing of a pressure vessel and ask them to describe how they would build it,” Pranschke said. “Given the pressure the vessel

John Pranschke, Business Development Manager for Kopetz Manufacturing

is designed to maintain, the candidate needs to be able to tell us the thickness of the steel required and be able to explain the process of putting it all together. Again, we can tell pretty quickly whether or not that individual has the potential we are looking for.” The process of building a 100foot pressure vessel up to 14 feet in diameter, or any other size for

that matter, begins with a rough drawing from a client which goes first to Kopetz’ engineering department, which uses the latest version of AutoCad drafting software available. A detailed drawing is then sent back to the client. When a final draft has been agreed upon and the contract has been signed, the work begins. The larger vessels can take up to a year to build. The sun never sets on the company’s products, which are shipped all over the world. Besides a strong domestic presence, the company ships its products to The Republic of China, Japan, India, Turkey, Brazil, Indonesia, Taiwan, Columbia and Korea, among others. One of the products the company fabricates is a Liquid

Natural Gas Vaporizer, a long, cylindrical tube used to convert LNG to a gas that can be used in a home or business. Gas moving to Japan, for example, is shipped as a liquid at more than 200 degrees below zero. When the ship reaches port, the liquid gas passes through a Kopetz vaporizer that empties into a pipeline, which carries the vaporous gas, at ambient temperature, to a storage tank at a nearby distribution facility. The company also specializes in fabricating products for the chemical industry which are built to ASME —American Society of Mechanical Engineers — standards or better, as are all of its products. The company is an outgrowth of the former Superior Welding Company, which had been a

fixture in Decatur’s industrial community for many years. But, in 1976, a group of employees decided to go out on their own and formed Kopetz Manufacturing, Inc. Besides its new products, the company has a specialized 4,000 square - foot machine shop facility to meet the needs of commercial and industrial customers who, in slow times, find it more economical to repair equipment than replace it. And its engineering division offers basic structural design capabilities: sizing columns and beams and bracing for facility expansions. Grady now looks to the future with a sense of confidence and determination. “As I said earlier, we have come through a very tough recession and we are still here. The industry is starting to

One phase of St. Mary’s construction set to open By COURTNEY WESTLAKE For the Herald & Review It’s been a long few years of discussions, planning, designing and more, but St. Mary’s Hospital is finally down to the final weeks of Phase 1 completion of its 94,000-square-foot, $31 million remodel project that includes a new emergency room, new laboratory and redesigned hospital entrance. “This gives us an emergency room that is the most up-to-date in design, making it easier for patients to come in and seek treatment,” said Theresa Rutherford, chief operating officer for St. Mary’s. The re-design of the hospital began three years ago when the community was invited to come in and give feedback on proposed drawings. Ground was broken almost 18 months ago, and in November, the hospital will invite the public back again to celebrate the new facility.

{

“Redesigning the hospital not only gives St. Mary’s an updated, modern facility with advanced technology, but also improves the patient and staff flow in the different areas”

}

“It’s getting to be pretty exciting,” Rutherford said. “On Nov. 5th, we’re doing a blessing and internal sharing inside the building. On Nov. 11, we’re celebrating our donors, and on the 13th, we’re having an open house for the community. Most times, you don’t get to see the inside of an ER unless you’re sick, so we’re inviting people to come look before we’re open.” The hospital is hoping to have the new emergency room open for business in December or January, after the inspection from the Department of Public Health is complete.

Re-designing the hospital not only gives St. Mary’s an updated, modern facility with advanced technology, but also improves the patient and staff flow in the different areas, Rutherford said. Additionally, the hospital’s outdoor campus will also be improved. “Part of the re-design involves the way the streets are, making it easier to not only park and maneuver but improves the number of trees and green space,” Rutherford said. “It’s a good physical campus for access, but it also involves nature. “Nature fosters additional healing. We have the use of the lake from one side, so we wanted to have a greener space on the other side - walking paths, a healing garden, things that affect the health of our patients and their families.” The next phase of the hospital construction project will involve the offices of Prairie Cardiovascular on the St. Mary’s

Key to Affording College is to Have a Plan etting goals is often the first step to achieving your hopes and dreams for yourself and your family. Making a plan, however, is crucial to making those dreams a reality. This is especially true when it comes to a college education for your children. Starting a college savings plan when your children are young sets you on a path for success and can help you reduce the need for expensive student loans down the road. Establishing a college savings plan early and contributing to it often is the key to reducing, or even eliminating, student loan debt. According to FinAid.org, parents who put aside just $50 per month from the time their child is born can grow a nest egg of more than $20,000 by the time that child turns 18, assuming a 7 percent return on investment. Increasing those contributions to $100 per month can yield more than $43,000. While there are a number of college savings vehicles to choose from, savers should keep in
