RCAF helicopters begin troop transport in Mali https://www.verticalmag.com/news/rcaf-helicopters-begin-troop-transport-in-mali/
Vertical Magazine Posted on August 29, 2018 by Chris Thatcher
With heavy rains hampering the movement of United Nations personnel by road, Canadian CH-146 Griffon and CH-147 Chinook helicopters have begun transporting troops to underserved regions of Mali. The Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) joint task force declared full operational capability (FOC) on Aug. 15 and the aviation detachment of three Boeing Chinooks and five Bell Griffons immediately embarked on its first mission, ferrying Dutch soldiers about 62 miles (100 kilometers) northeast of their base camp near the city of Page 6 of 40
Gao. A second similar ―presence projection‖ mission of a Chinook and two Griffon escorts was conducted three days later on Aug. 18. Canadian Armed Forces members deployed as part of MINUSMA, are greeted by Dutch forces after landing a CH-147F Chinook helicopter in Kidal, Mali, during Operation PRESENCE on Aug. 23, 2018. Cpl. Ken Beliwicz Photo Advertisement ―We move a platoon of soldiers and some ATVs near a village and allowed them to engage with the local population and [develop] an idea of what their needs are,‖ said Col Chris McKenna, the task force commander. Severe thunderstorms and heavy rain–as much as 1.5 to two inches (40 to 50 millimeters) at times–have washed out some roads and made driving conditions difficult and dangerous for UN troops, he said, making air transport a much safer option. ...citește varianta integrală și originală urmărind link-ul ...

Is Your Managed Security Service Missing An Intelligent Edge? https://www.baesystems.com/en/cybersecurity/feature/intelligent-managedsecurity-services
BAE Systems Intelligent managed services are changing the way we think about security and this evolution is thanks to five simple principles. Find out what they are and how to benefit from them with our intelligent detection and response buyer's guide.
Intelligent Detection and Response Buyer's GuideWhat words do you associate with MSS? If you’re optimistic, you might say ―reassurance‖ or ―resilience‖. But, no matter how much of a managed security romantic you are, you’d probably admit there’s a more cynical term that also fits. Compromise. For too long, managed security meant sacrifice. Conceding the best detection and response tools. Or retaining them, but at the expense of a tailored, high-performing partnership model. And that’s a problem. Because if there’s one area of your IT estate where you really don’t want to compromise, it’s security. But those days of compromise are over, thanks to the arrival of intelligent detection and response. This smarter approach to managed security gives you both Page 19 of 40
supercharged detection and response capabilities and a robust partnership-led managed security approach. If you’re used to working with an outdated MSSP or a fickle MDR vendor, you may not have thought this balance was possible. But by blending the best of both managed security offerings together into an intelligent detection and response approach, you can benefit from this resilience-boosting service. Redefining Managed Security This intelligent approach is defined by its ability to detect and respond to advanced threats in the here and now. And, at the same time, generating intelligence that can improve your resilience in the future. If you’ve been forced to put up with years of substandard security services, this might sound fanciful – the stuff of a rose-tinted dream. But it’s not. It’s ready to roll out today, and capable of delivering immediate results. The challenge is finding the right partner – one who can fully deliver on this promise of smarter managed security services. The Characteristics of Intelligent Security Services Download our buying guide, and you’ll discover:
How the best providers are able to ensure their threat detection is unrivalled Why it’s not just what gets detected, but how those threats were identified that matters… … and the importance of translating that to your business specifically What role a vendor’s detection tools and IP play in providing the most effective security Why you need to demand complete transparency from your partner

Jorge Domecq, the EDA Chief Executive, made a two-days working visit (2-3 September) to Romania where he had talks with the Minister of Defence, Mr. Mihai-Viorel Fifor, the State-Secretary for Defence Policy, Planning and International Relations, Mr Mircea Dusa, as well as with the State Secretaries of Page 30 of 40
the Ministries of Economy and Foreign Affairs, Mr Ion Radu and Mr Stefan Tinca. He also had a meeting with the Executive Manager of Romania’s National Defence Industry Association (NDIA), Mr. Viorel Manole. The main topics raised during these talks included the implementation of the various new EU defence initiatives (PESCO, CARD, EDF), the recently revised EU Capability Development Priorities, Romania’s current and potential future contributions to EDA projects and programmes, the implications of the Agency’s recent Long Term Review (LTR) as well as the EU-NATO relations. “It’s crucial to ensure the various EU defence initiatives are implemented in a coherent and coordinated manner, based on jointly agreed capability development priorities and in full transparency and complementarity with NATO”, Mr Domecq stressed. The defence-related priorities and events of the upcoming Romanian Presidency of the Council of the EU (first half of 2019) were also discussed. In June 2019, Romania will host the 4th and last conference of the second phase of the Consultation Forum for Sustainable Energy in the Defence and Security Sector – Phase II (CF SEDSS II) in Bucharest. Furthermore, the EDA intends to organize a defence R&T conference in Bucharest in March 2019. “I very much appreciate Romania’s strong support of the EDA and look forward to working closely with Romania as it prepares to take over the Presidency of the EU Council”, Mr Domecq stated.

College or $70,000 a year? Aviation industry scrambles for mechanics as retirements loom https://www.cnbc.com/2018/09/03/airlines-search-for-young-mechanics-asretirement-wave-looms.html
CNBC 3 septembrie 2018
Boeing estimates the aviation industry will need 754,000 new aircraft technicians over the next 20 years. About 30 percent of the current ranks of aircraft mechanics are at or near retirement age and they're retiring faster than they're being replaced, the Aviation Technician Education Council said. Young mechanics can quickly earn $72,000 a year.
The aviation industry needs to hire thousands of more people like Thomas Maharis. Maharis, recent high school graduate who lives with his family in the Howard Beach section of Queens, is earning $25 an hour as an entry-level aircraft technician. In four overnight shifts a week at nearby John F. Kennedy International Airport, Maharis, 19, repairs aircraft cabins after planes are done flying for the day for Delta Air Lines, where he started working in June. ...citește varianta integrală și originală urmărind link-ul ...

Cap. OPINII/ANALIZE Analiza Industriei A&D în 2017 și prognoza pentru 2018 (3, început cu #317) Aerospace and defense 2017 year in review and 2018 forecast https://www.pwc.com/us/en/industrial-products/publications/assets/pwc-aerospacedefense-2017-review-2018-forecast.pdf
PwC The defense industry reported accelerating revenue growth in 2017. In March 2018, President Trump signed the omnibus spending bill, which sets the Department of Defense (DoD) budget at $700 billion, about a 20% increase in two years. Therefore, we expect continued acceleration of revenue and profit in 2018. During 2017 and into early 2018 the global threat environment continued to evolve. Coalition forces have substantially defeated ISIS. And while terrorist threats are likely to persist, the Pentagon is pivoting toward Russia, China, North Korea and Iran, particularly North Korea’s escalating nuclear missile program, causing the US to bolster its presence in the region. Furthermore, China’s military modernization is continuing to cause tension, particularly in the South China Sea. All these events underscore the complex and dynamic global security environment, which could cause rapid changes in US defense priorities. There were few changes to the top 100 list in 2017. BWXT and VSE were added to the list and B/E Aerospace and Digital Globe were deleted. There were, however, some significant deal announcements, which are pending or have closed in 2018, including UTC’s acquisition of Rockwell Collins and Northrop Grumman’s acquisition of Orbital ATK.
