Airbus has signed the new A400M Global Support Step 2 contract with OCCAR (Organisation for Joint Armament Co-operation), which manages the multinational programme on behalf of the Launch Customer Nations Germany, France, United Kingdom, Spain, Turkey, Belgium and Luxembourg. This is the first support contract for all A400M participating states and it replaces the Global Support agreement Step 1 signed in 2016, which provided support services for France, Spain and the UK. The contract will bring the benefits of a fully integrated suite of common services using shared resources and assets. It provides a full range of tailored services to meet the needs of the A400M customers, from ground support to airworthiness and from maintenance to material support. This performance-based contract creates a new partnership framework, based on pooling and sharing, where industry and operators have the opportunity to explore new areas of collaboration, concepts and services. The modular structure of the services allows for the tailoring of solutions as per specific operational requirements. The pooling and sharing under Airbus management will allow the A400M customers to benefit from significant savings while keeping the same highest standard of services. This new phase of the A400M Global Support contract provides a support services package to a wider number of nations operating the A400M until the end of 2023. After France, UK and Spain, which were part of the first phase, now Turkey, Germany, Belgium and Luxembourg have joined as well. Alberto Gutiérrez, Head of Military Aircraft at Airbus Defence and Space, said: ―With this services contract, we are working together with our customers on innovative solutions never performed before on a military programme. After the agreement with the launch customer nations on the programme‘s contract amendment this is another clear signal that through mutual collaboration we are strengthening the future of the A400M.‖ Gary Palmer, OCCAR A400M Programme Manager, said: ―The A400M Global Support contract covers more than 40 individual services working together, a complete pool of services from ground support to airworthiness, through to maintenance or material services. Under this collaborative model, the more nations that join the pool, the more efficient the services become from which customers can benefit.‖

Boeing [NYSE:BA] is launching its latest round of flight-testing to assess new technologies that could address real-world challenges for airplane operators and
passengers — from enhancing safety and sustainability to improving the flying experience. The company is debuting a Boeing 777 that will serve as the 2019 flying test bed for 50 projects. "This is the latest addition to our ecoDemonstrator program, where we look at how crew and passengers can have a better experience and how technologies can make flying safer, more efficient and more enjoyable," said Mike Sinnett, vice president of product strategy and future airplane development at Boeing Commercial Airplanes. "Using the 777 flying test bed lets us learn faster and move forward on improvements much quicker and with greater fidelity in defining their value." Among the technologies being tested on this year's ecoDemonstrator program are: Sharing digital information between air traffic control, the flight deck and an airline's operations center to optimize routing efficiency and safety. An electronic flight bag application that uses next-generation communications to automatically provide rerouting information to pilots when weather conditions warrant. Connected cabin technologies that make galleys and lavatories smart, and monitor cabin conditions such as temperature and humidity to facilitate automatic adjustments. Cameras to provide more passengers with a view outside the airplane. Boeing's ecoDemonstrator program first took to the skies in 2012. Five airplanes — a 737-800, 787-8 Dreamliner, 757, Embraer E170 and 777 Freighter — have tested 112 technologies through 2018. More than a third of the technologies have transitioned to implementation at Boeing or by program partners. Nearly half remain in further development while testing on the other projects was discontinued after learnings were accomplished. Among the technologies now in use are iPad apps that provide real-time information to pilots, enabling them to reduce fuel use and emissions; custom approach path information to reduce community noise; and a camera system on the 777X that will help pilots avoid ground obstacles. A key part of the ecoDemonstrator program is collaboration with industry partners to jointly test technologies and share learnings that advance aviation. Lockheed Martin's board of directors approved the appointments of new leaders for two of the corporation's business areas. Frank St. John will move to executive vice president of Rotary and Mission Systems (RMS) and Scott Greene will become executive vice president of Missiles and Fire Control (MFC). St. John succeeds Dale Bennett, who intends to retire but will serve as strategic advisor on the executive leadership team through the end of the year. Both Greene and St. John will serve as corporate officers. Their appointments will be effective Aug. 26. St. John, 52, joined Lockheed Martin as an intern more than 30 years ago, and took on roles of increasing responsibility in engineering and program management before joining the corporation's executive leadership team. For the past year and a half, he has served as executive vice president of MFC. Under his leadership, MFC secured significant long-term strategic contract wins and grew international sales significantly. Greene, 61, has served as vice president of Tactical and Strike Missiles in the MFC business segment since August 2017, where he had total business, operational and financial responsibility for that line of business. With more than 38 years of experience, Greene has held positions of increasing responsibility throughout the corporation. "Frank and Scott are proven leaders who have built impressive records at Lockheed Martin. They bring a commitment to excellence and strong customer focus to their respective business areas," said Lockheed Martin Chairman, President and CEO Marillyn Hewson. "These appointments reflect Lockheed Martin's commitment to succession planning and strong governance. We have deep talent and expertise in our executive leadership team, and I am confident Frank and Scott will continue to deliver strong performance in their new roles." Bennett began his career in the U.S. Air Force and joined Lockheed Martin in 1981. In his most recent role as the leader of RMS, Dale led a team of more than 35,000 people across the globe working on a diverse product portfolio of over 1,000 programs ranging from helicopters to naval platforms. He has been a champion for the corporation's military veteran workforce and an advocate for STEM education initiatives. "We appreciate Dale's leadership and service over his remarkable 40-year career in the military and in industry," Hewson said. "His broad experience across engineering, business development and strategy made him a uniquely valuable part of our leadership team. We wish him well in his retirement."

Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE: NOC) has received a $104 million indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity (IDIQ) award for the technical refresh of UH-1Y, AH-1Z and UH-60V mission computers. The IDIQ contract covers delivery of production units, retrofit units and spare units for the Marine Corps, Defense Logistics Agency and the government of Bahrain under the Foreign Military Sales Act. This contract brings together multiple mission computer customers, driving greater value, cost efficiency and a reduced logistics footprint. Under the IDIQ, the Navy may issue task or delivery order awards up to the ceiling amount specified in the contract. Rheinmetall and BAE Systems have today launched a new, independent UK-based joint venture (JV) for military vehicle design, manufacture and support – known as Rheinmetall BAE Systems Land (RBSL). Headquartered in Telford in the West Midlands, the JV will sustain around 450 jobs across the UK and is well positioned for future growth. RBSL intends to play a major role in manufacturing the Boxer 8x8 for the British Army‘s Mechanised Infantry Vehicle (MIV) programme and other strategic combat vehicle programmes, while also providing support to the British Army‘s in-service bridging and armoured vehicle fleets. Defence Secretary Penny Mordaunt said: ―This announcement is a clear vote of confidence in the UK‘s defence industry as a world-leader in designing, supplying and supporting military vehicles. ―This exciting venture clearly demonstrates how Defence sits at the heart of the prosperity agenda. Its benefits will be felt in the West Midlands and across the UK defence supply chain, creating jobs, boosting exports and guaranteeing our technical skills base into the future.‖ RBSL will draw on Rheinmetall‘s broader military vehicle technologies combined with the additional capabilities and systems brought to the Joint Venture by BAE Systems‘ Land UK business, such as Trojan, Terrier, Warrior, military bridging and the AS90 self-propelled artillery system. RBSL will have the potential to create hundreds of additional UK jobs, both in Telford and the wider supply chain. Peter Hardisty, formerly of
Rheinmetall UK, has been appointed as Managing Director of the new company. He said: ―RBSL is a new business drawing on the significant strengths and expertise of both BAE Systems Land UK and Rheinmetall. Our employees in Telford, Bristol, and Washington (UK) have a valuable skill set and extensive experience in combat vehicle engineering. With new orders, we shall be able to sustain these capabilities and expand over the coming years, seeking new opportunities in the UK and overseas.‖ The new management team that will lead RBSL into the future also includes Carrie White as Finance Director and Phil Simon as Operations Director, both of whom join from BAE Systems. Regulatory approval for the joint venture was granted on 13 June 2019.

A grant agreement worth of â‚Ź1.88 million was signed on 25 May 2019 for the Strategic Technology Foresight action called SOLOMON to be carried out under the EU Preparatory Action in the field of defence research. The grant agreement was signed between the European Defence Agency (EDA) and the winning consortium led by Engineering Ingegneria Informatica S.p.A. (The other members of the consortium can be found in the SOLOMON project page)
The Strategic Technology Foresight action called SOLOMON (Strategy-Oriented anaLysis Of the Market fOrces in EU defeNce) was selected following an EU-wide call for proposals organised by EDA closing on 28 June 2018. The action aims to provide an effective way for tackling the issue of critical defence technological dependencies for the EU regarding current and future systems and capabilities. The winning consortium encompasses a total of 18 participants from 10 countries. The project will be complementary to the PYTHIA project, which was selected following the Preparatory Action Call on Strategic Technology Foresight 2017. The SOLOMON project is part of the Preparatory Action, aimed at testing the mechanisms that can prepare, organise and deliver a variety of EU-funded cooperative defence research and technology development (R&T) activities to improve the competitiveness and innovation in the European defence industry and to stimulate cooperation amongst R&T actors in the EU Member States. The signature of this grant agreement continues the path towards EU defence integration and paves the way for developing a future European Defence Fund, especially its research dimension, as part of the EU‘s next Multiannual Financial Framework (2021-2027). The next step in 2019 will be the signatures of the grant agreements related to the calls on electronic design technologies for defence application and effects. Airbus Cyber Innovation celebrates today the opening of its Cyber Innovation Hub located in the Airbus facility in Newport, Wales. The Hub hosts leading cyber security research initiatives, incubators and accelerators, and academic research partnerships. Key areas of research include the protection of industrial control and safety critical systems, understanding the human factors of cyber security, and artificial intelligence and data analytics. Airbus is a global leader in cyber innovation and research. The Cyber Innovation teams monitor and identify cyber trends in order to develop the technology required to tackle emerging security issues and protect Airbus‘ portfolio of products, manufacturing processes and intellectual property from cyber threats. At the Hub, state-of-the-art Research & Innovation programmes develop breakthrough technologies which are then transformed into prototypes and demonstrators by incubation projects. Accelerator programmes industrialise these solutions and run pilot projects across the wider business. The Newport Hub helps promote Wales‘ reputation for cyber excellence by developing cyber talent in the region and engaging with Welsh industry and academia. An ambitious cyber security initiative jointly funded by the Welsh Government and Airbus called CyberLab is hosted at the Airbus Cyber Innovation Hub. develops fundamental cyber security research for key industrial requirements in advanced manufacturing organisations. Partnerships with academia are key to Airbus Cyber Innovation‘s goal of identifying and developing emerging research and technology. The Centre of Excellence in Cyber Security Analytics is a partnership with Cardiff University launched in 2017. A leading UK academic research unit for cyber security analytics, the team is developing new ways of protecting corporate IT networks, intellectual property and critical national infrastructure from cyber attacks. Beyond this, close collaboration between Cardiff University and Airbus Cyber Innovation has been a great asset in driving innovation and skills development forward for Wales and the wider world. The Centre of Excellence in Industrial Control System (ICS) Security is a longstanding partnership with De Montfort University‘s Cyber Technology Institute (CTI). This initiative is focused on the research of tools, techniques and knowledge for the protection of Industrial Control Systems. Attending the opening, Ken Skates AM, Minister for Economy and Transport, said: ―I am delighted to be working in partnership with Airbus on this exciting and absolutely vital new facility. This Cyber Innovation Hub will give front line leadership in cyber security to companies and enterprises across Wales and indeed the UK for this and future generations. I view Cyber as a building block for every commercial enterprise in Wales.
