Chris Weems selected as HHS Honorary Alumna In 2019, the Hazen High School Alumni Association voted to recognize people who are not HHS alumni, but who have made great contributions to the Hazen School District over the years. This year’s Fall Honorary HHS Alumni Award was presented to Christine Weems, affectionately known as Mrs. Chris. Miss Christine Smith of Carlisle, a 1952 graduate of Henderson State Teachers College, now Henderson State University, started her teaching career in Hazen High School in the fall of 1952. She married Charles Lynn Weems in 1955. He took his commission from ROTC when he graduated from the University of ArkansasFayetteville and spent two years in Korea with the Army.

Rick Stallings and Debbie Carlyle presented the award to Mrs. Chris (center). Charles, who was a Distinguished Military student, went on loan with the Air Force and had 72 combat missions in Korea as an aerial observer before his discharge. He returned home and took up farm-

ing with his father as he had done during his high school years. They continued to live in Hazen until his death in 2002. Ms. Chris taught Home Economics for 39 years, and sponsored FHA all

those years plus sponsoring the Yearbook twenty five of those years. After her retirement, Ms. Chris and her husband became charter members of the Hazen Lions Club and she

served as president two terms. She also served several years as secretary of the Prairie County Single Parent Scholarship Fund and is a member of the Committee of 100, a group of Arkansas women who support the Ozark Folk Center at Mountain View. She helped start the Prairie County Hope Chest to help those in need, and she is a long time member of the Elsie McCain Club. She is also involved in the Eastern Star, the Prairie County Democratic Party, and the Prairie County Master Gardeners. Throughout the years, she has held many roles at the Hazen Calvary Baptist Church. She has often been one of those volunteers who gets the work done but goes unseen.

Ryleigh Cook, daughter of Chris and Chrystal Cook of DeValls Bluff and a student at Hazen, helped her team, the Central Arkansas Bears, bring home a tournment victory this past weekend. Ryleigh was incredible on the mound and even more impressive in the batter’s box with a homerun in one of the games. There were 18 teams from various parts of the state in the USA Hitting for Cancer tournament in Sherwood, Arkansas on October 3rd. After an exhausting 7 games, the girls battled until 2 a.m. and came out on top! The Bears won all but one of the seven games they played. The girls took home first place, winning the Championship game, and brought home gold rings for their efforts. Congratulations Ryleigh, we are so proud of our hometown girl making big moves! LYNN HATCHER JUSTICE OF THE PEACE

DISTRICT #4 (Paid for by the Prairie County Republican Party.)

Voter Guide. The University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture’s Public Policy Center has published neutral, research-based information on all statewide ballot issues since 2004. The voter guide was published online last month, but hard copies of the guide can now be picked up at the Prairie County Extension Service located in the DeValls Bluff Courthouse. This year, early voting begins Oct. 19 and Election Day is on Nov. 3. The voter guide can help voters better understand what is being asked of them, said Kristin Higgins, a program associate in the Public Policy Center. “We want people to be aware that there are ballot issues to decide in addition to candidates,” Higgins said. “The voter guide includes a tear-out worksheet to make notes on, and provides some historical context as well as what a FOR or

AGAINST vote would mean.” Due to printing deadlines, Higgins said the voter guide covers all six statewide ballot issues that had been proposed. The Arkansas Supreme Court recently disqualified Issue 4, Issue 5 and Issue 6. Some voters may see Issue 6 still listed on their ballot because of when ballots were printed, but votes cast on that issue won’t be counted. Proposals remaining include three constitutional amendments from the legislature. These issues are: Issue 1, which would make permanent a 0.5% state sales tax that currently funds state, county and city road and bridge work. An existing half-cent sales tax for roadwork approved by voters in 2012 is set to expire in June 2023. Issue 1 proposes replacing that temporary tax with a permanent 0.5% sales tax that would

take effect in July 2023. Revenues would continue to be split between the state highway department (70%), counties (15%) and cities (15%) for road, bridge and other surface transportation needs. Issue 2, which would eliminate Arkansas’ lifetime term limits for state legislators and replace an existing 16year cap with a 12-year consecutive limit. When reaching the 12-year limit, legislators would have to sit out four years before they could serve in office again. Current legislators and those elected this November would be eligible to serve up to 16 years consecutively or not before falling under the new rules. Issue 3, which would make several changes to the citizen initiative ballot process and increase the number of votes required in the legislature by 12 for referring constitutional amend-

ments to voters. The proposal would increase the number of counties where voter signatures must be collected to qualify a constitutional amendment, state law or referendum for the statewide ballot, from 15 counties to 45 counties. The proposal would also set a January 15 deadline for submitting voter signatures to the Secretary of State’s Office, create an April 15 deadline for filing lawsuits challenging citizen initiatives before an election, and eliminate extra time ballot issue groups have at the state, county and city level to collect additional voter signatures. The proposal would also eliminate a requirement that legislative ballot titles be published in a newspaper for six months ahead of an election, and instead would allow titles to be published in a manner provided by law. Issue 2 and Issue 3 still face court challenges

over their ballot titles so go to www.uaex.edu/ballot for the most up-todate information. Follow the Public Policy Center on Facebook or Twitter, or sign up to receive the center’s ballot issue education newsletter by emailing publicpoilcycenter@uaex.edu. Arkansans see the popular name and ballot title of each proposed constitutional amendment when casting their votes. Every amendment actually includes more information that is not included on the ballot. Voters can find the full proposals and learn more about what they would do in the voter guide. The voter guide includes: How the proposals will appear on the ballot What a “FOR” or “AGAINST” vote means Questions and answers about what proposals would do Supporter and opponent viewpoints.

State Capitol Week in Review From Senator Jonathan Dismang

In this year’s election, Arkansas voters will determine the outcome of three proposed amendments to the state Constitution. If approved by voters, Issue One would make permanent the current half-cent sales tax that pays for highway construction and maintenance. In 2010, Arkansas voters approved spending the revenue from a half-cent sales tax on road work, and that tax is scheduled to expire in 2023.

Another measure on the ballot is Issue Two, which would limit the terms of Arkansas legislators to 12 years. However, current legislators would be “grandfathered” in and could serve 16 years, which is the current term limit in the Constitution. A major change proposed by Issue Two would be that the 12-year limit would not be a lifetime limit. The current 16-year limit in the Constitution is a lifetime limit, which means an individual who

is term limited may never again run for a seat in the state legislature. Issue Two, if approved by voters, would limit an individual to 12 consecutive years of service in the legislature, at which point the individual would have to step down. However, after a wait of four years, that person would be able to run again for legislative office. Issue Three is perhaps the most complex ballot issue this year, because it affects a complex procedure with which many Arkansans are not familiar. It would change the process by which organizations collect signatures to get citizen initiatives on the ballot. The initiative process is how the lottery scholarship was established in Arkansas, and also how casino gambling and medical marijuana became legal.

Almost every initiative is been challenged in court by its opponents. Lawsuits challenge the validity of the signatures submitted to get the initiative placed on the ballot. Another common legal challenge is to question the sufficiency of the ballot title. If a ballot title fails to reflect the substance of the proposed initiative, the Supreme Court will strike it from the ballot for being misleading to voters. Almost every election year, the final Supreme Court decisions are not handed down until just a few days or weeks before the election. That can confuse voters. For example, this year several proposals have been invalidated, leaving only Issues One, Two and Three on the ballot.

Eagles blow out the Hornets 54-14 in the battle for the Prairie By Mark Buffalo Sports Editor Early on, it looked like Des Arc and Hazen would have a shootout for the Battle of the Prairie on Friday night at Hornets Field. However, the Eagles had different ideas. Des Arc improved to 60 with a 54-14 win over Hazen. The Eagles scored the game’s final 38 points after leading 16-14 early in the second quarter. “Our offense is clicking right now,” Des Arc Coach B.J. Paschal said. “I”m proud of the way our offensive line is playing. I”m proud of the way Coach Nick Smith has been calling ball games. Before this week, we were averaging 46 points per game. I’m proud of what we’re doing offensively.” Des Arc took an 8-0 lead on a 30-yard run by Luke Morton with 8:50 left in the first quarter. He also scored the two-

point conversion. Hazen tied it at 8-8 on a 12-yard touchdown pass from Luke King to Eric Cohen on fourth down with 4:33 left in the first quarter. King threw to Austin Duck for the two-point conversion. Des Arc reclaimed the lead on its next possession as Morton scored on a 2-yard run with 2:12 left in the first quarter. He also scored the twopoint conversion. Hazen had a chance to tie it on its next possession. King recovered a fumble and ran it into the end zone for a touchdown with 9:09 left in the first half. The twopoint conversion failed, leaving Des Arc ahead at 16-14. Des Arc, which scored a touchdown on every possession in the game, took a 24-14 lead with 8:45 left in the first half on 42-yard run by Eyan Holloway. Morton scored the two-point conver-

Jinks had 125 yards on 16 carries. Gage Parker had 46 yards on 8 carries. “It felt good to finish the game with a win,” Carlisle coach Caleb Shock said. “We didn’t do things like we wanted to do at the beginning of the game. Marvell is a team that can give you some problems. They did the same type of stuff to Hazen.

They got Hazen off the field in the first three plays on Hazen’s first possession. “They put everyone at the line of scrimmage and send them all. That can be difficult to block. It took us some time to kind of figure it out what we needed to do. Once we figured it out,

we were able to get going.” Carlisle travels to Hinson-Rollins Field this Friday to take on the 6-0 Des Arc Eagles, which beat Hazen 54-14 last Friday. “They are a really good team,” Shock said of the Eagles. “They are a different team from

Oh, to be crazy and get paid for it... by Dr. James L. Snyder

“Whoever loves money never has enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with their income. This too is meaningless” (Ecclesiastes 5:10). Calvary Baptist Church West North Front Street, Hazen, AR Phone: (870) 255 - 4038 Christian VanHouten, pastor Sunday School: 9:50 AM Worship: 10:45 AM BTC: 6 PM Evening Worship 6:45 PM Wednesday Bible Study: 7 PM First Baptist Church 224 N. I usually don't complain a lot. When I do I get caught in some dilemma that I can’t talk my way out. You think I would learn my lesson, but I'm still in the learning curve. It was a long week, and the Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage and I had a busy schedule. She went her way, I went my way and the Spousal Twain only meets after the week’s work is done. Some weeks are better than others, but some aren't. And I was having a rather dismal week with a few things going wrong. For one, my vehicle needed to go to the garage to be fixed. I always fear taking my truck in for repairs because it usually ends up costing more than expected. However, this week, when I went to pick up my vehicle, it was only 1/3 of what I thought it would cost. I was happy. After all, who wouldn't be happy? I drove home in time for supper, and the Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage had a wonderful supper prepared for us, and we enjoyed our time together. I am a little careful because she has a way of sneaking in vegetables

that I don’t recognize. After supper, we took our coffee into the living room to watch a little bit of the news. That is always the wrong thing to do, and you would think I would know it by this time. If there's anything positive on the news, it has something to do with this coronavirus. I'm a little weary of that. Watching the news, my wife could see that I was getting a little bit agitated. I don't always get agitated, but when I do… I do. “What has you all worked up,” my wife asked? I was afraid to respond to that question. I have learned that every time your wife asks you a question, there is an agenda behind the scene that you can't see. I was afraid I was being set up or something. Finally, I broke my silence and said, “I’m rather tired of all of these crazy politicians who don’t know their right hand from their left hand, except when they stick it out for donations. I’m tired of these crazy politicians being on television! Why can’t they go to the principal’s office like I

had to do so often when I was in grade school?” I tried to keep my rant as short as possible. I had a lot more that I wanted to say, but I was a little frustrated, so I tucked it in the back of my brain. Incidentally, there's plenty of room back there. When I quieted down, I heard some chuckles across the room. I looked in my wife's direction, and there she sat giggling and chuckling and having a great time of it. “What’s so funny?” She just looked at me and continued giggling and then finally said, "Don't you know that those crazy politicians get paid for being crazy. The crazier they are, the more money they make." Then she broke into one of her hysterical laughters. “Don’t you,” she said between giggles, “wish you were that crazy?” I had to think about that. I never thought of that before. But, as usual, my wife is right. I wish I could get a job where I didn’t have to do anything and get paid 100 times more than I’m orth. “If you want to make money like them,” my wife said rather soberly, “you will have to be just

as crazy as they are.” That's a very good thought. Maybe I ought to look into this situation a little closer. “That’s why you don’t have much money,” my wife explained, “you are not crazy enough!” That was a surprise coming from my wife. I thought she knew how crazy I really was. But then I got to thinking. Perhaps she is right after all. “Where do you suppose they get all of their craziness?” Again, my wife chuckled and looked at me and said, "Because they have no idea what they say from one day to the next. They live in a bubble and have lost a sense of reality in this world of ours." Again, she was spot on about this craziness in politics. "They don't live in the real world," my wife began to explain to me. "They live in a world of their imagination, and their imagination creates a spirit of craziness." "So," I said to her, "if I'm going to get paid for being crazy, I gotta quit living in the real world." “Now you got it,” she replied. I got it, but I’m sure not

going to get it. Getting paid for being crazy means that I have to live in a bubble and not the real world, I wonder if it’s really worth it? Maybe being poor and sane is the better alternative. I must confess that there are moments when I am tempted towards craziness. Then, I watched some politician on television giving a speech, and I realized being that crazy is worth it for me. How much money would be worth becoming that crazy? I then thought of a verse in the Bible. “Whoever loves money never has enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with their income. This too is meaningless” (Ecclesiastes 5:10). Being crazy isn’t worth all the money in the world. Dr. James L. Snyder is pastor of the Family of God Fellowship, Ocala, FL 34472.
