Hooks,Mc Anally win 2019 Law School trial competition FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. Third-year law students Chris Hooks of Slovak and his team mate, David McAnally, have won the 2019 William H. Sutton Barrister's Union Trial Competition. The team of Kelli Albrecht and Chris Carwile were runners-up. Chris is the son of Paul and Carol Hooks. U.S. Magistrate Judge Joe J. Volpe, Eastern District of Arkansas;

Judge Kenneth S. Hixson, Arkansas Court of Appeals; and Judge Robin Green, 19th West Judicial Circuit, presided over the final round. Hixson and Green are University of Arkansas School of Law alumni. The championship, held Friday, Oct. 11, in the E.J. Ball Courtroom, concluded three weeks and five rounds of competition. One hundred and

thirteen practicing attorneys and legal scholars served as judges earning more than 100 hours of continuing legal education credit for their participation. Student involvement included 64 competitors and more than 64 additional volunteers who served as witnesses or timekeepers, making this one of the largest competitions in school history.

Students Courtney Brooks and Duncan Street, members of the school's Board of Advocates, co-chaired the competition, which is one of several presented by the board each year. The Board of Advocates is a student-run organization that promotes the extracurricular development of practical skills, in both oral and written advocacy, through practice and

participation in both internal and external competition. The Sutton Trial Competition is held annually and is named for William H. Sutton (19312015), a 1959 graduate of the University of Arkansas School of Law with a distinguished legal career that spanned more than five decades.

Now is the time to change out smoke detector batteries Kenneth Edwin Caviness Kenneth Edwin Caviness of Hazen passed away peacefully in his sleep on October 24, 2019 at the age of 80 after a long and courageous battle with his health. Kenneth was born September 11, 1939 in Hazen, Arkansas, the son of the late Maurice and Opal Caviness. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Shirley Rogers. As a young man, Kenneth began his love of agriculture with a job at Riceland Foods in Hazen. Later he got his start in farming with help from his father-in-law, Frank Halijan and Everett Hall who became a life-long friend and mentor. Kenneth was passionate about farming and he passed that on to his son and grandsons. Kenneth loved to make others happy. Many will remember Kenneth brightening their Christmas celebrations dressed as Santa or all the free rides he gave on his train at the local rice festivals. Around 1984, Kenneth began frying fish for a few of the local farmers. This pastime soon became another passion of his as it grew into Big K’s catfish barn. Over the years, people from all over the state and beyond have made their way to the catfish barn, and Kenneth has visited with each and everyone of them. Kenneth was a loving

was one of 5 children and the only daughter of Ephrom Harden (1958) and Girtha Harden (2014). She had a great love for her family. Laverne was a travel agent and traveled to 48 foreign countries, and about 2/3 of the states. Her travel included England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Switzerland, Egypt, Israel, Turkey, Greece, Italy, Australia, New Zealand, Russia, Ukraine, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Finland, Hungary, Germany, Austria, Poland, Malta, Iceland, and many others. She also kept the books for her husband’s business. She gave birth to 2 children, a son, Keith, when she was 19, and a daughter, Rhonda, when she was 22. (Keith was killed in 1985 in England where he was born.) Laverne collected teapots, often bringing one home from the countries she visited. She also collected souvenir spoons and thimbles from each country she visited. Laverne loved wearing hats, and so, had a lot of them. Above all, Laverne was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses June 25, 1960. She loved going door to door in the ministry helping people learn and understand what the Bible teaches. She along, with all of Jehovah’s Witnesses, always studied the Bible constantly, and went to congregation meetings and conventions regularly. Over recent years a lot of her ministry dealt with encouraging others to use www.jw.org to find what the Bible teaches, along with studying the Bible with interested ones personally. She let others know what a tremendous amount of information is provided on that internet website. Her hope for the future is to be resurrected in Jehovah’s due time on a paradise earth along with all others resting in Jehovah’s memory. She always showed that a paradise earth is what Jehovah promised in his word, the Bible. She always looked forward to seeing her resurrected relatives and friends in that paradise along with all faithful men and women of old.

Hornets win homecoming with shutout

Eagle Band to compete at state... by Easton Glover Last Friday the Hazen Hornets faced off with the Earle Bulldogs. After their homecoming was rained out, the Hornets were looking for something to celebrate. Hazen fought off the rain and handed the Bulldogs a 400 defeat. This victory advances the Hornets to 6-1 and keeps them in the running for conference champions. The Hornets showed up to play on both sides of the football. Half way through the first quarter both defenses started off the game with a stop. The first quarter looked as if it was going to be dominated by defense until Ayjon Green found his way into the end zone on a short run. On Earle’s next drive Hazen forced a fumble and recovered it. Hazen’s drive went on

until the end of the quarter. The second quarter is when Hazen decided to run wild. Hazen’s defense stopped the Bulldogs on multiple defensive stands. The quarter was scoreless until Green broke free for a 45 yard touchdown run. The successful 2-point conversion gave Hazen a 14-0 lead. After another stop by Hazen, Tarrell Penn forced his way down the middle for a powerful touchdown run. The end of the half came with the Hornets leading 20-0. The third quarter was kicked off with an Earle fumble that was recovered by the Hornets. Hazen took advantage of the turnover with another Tarrell Penn touchdown run. Green ran it in for the easy conversion. After another stop by Hazen’s defense, Rasheed Mills took off for a 40 yard

rushing touchdown. The quarter came to an end with Hazen dominating 34-0. The fourth quarter was just like the fourth quarter of most Hazen games. Tarrell Penn ran it in for another 6 points to make it 40-0. The mercy rule was on Hazen’s side the rest of the game. With the clock continuously running no one was able to find their way to the end zone for the rest of the game. The final horn sounded with Hazen celebrating their 40-0 homecoming victory. This was the first time in a while that Hazen seemed like themselves. Something seemed off against Carlisle, Des Arc, and Clarendon, but it seems like they figured it out. Hazen will travel to Lee County this week in a game that the Hornets should dominate.

Prairie County fall Brucellosis vaccination program scheduled The County Brucellosis (Bangs) vaccination program will be held Thursday, November 14, 2019. Arkansas law requires that all heifer

calves between 4 and 12 months of age be vaccinated against Brucellosis. Representatives from the Livestock and Poultry Commission and the

Prairie County Cooperative Extension Service will offer an onfarm vaccination program at no cost to all Prairie County beef and dairy producers. If you are interested, please contact the Prairie County Extension De Valls Bluff at 870-9982614 by Tuesday, November 5th . A schedule will be put together and producers will be notified when we will be at their farm. The Livestock and Poultry Commission has stated that each farm where cattle are to be vaccinated must have a chute or squeeze chute with a head gate where cattle can be subdued. Even with good facilities, the chances of someone getting hurt are possible. If the proper facilities are not available or safe, the vaccinator has the right to refuse to vaccinate your calves. Calves will not be vaccinated unless the owner or someone representing him is present.
