Eagles come up short in hard fought 2A state title game By Mark Buf falo Spor ts Editor The Des Arc Eagles ran out of time. Fordyce held off a late Des Arc rally to beat the Eagles 35-32 to win the Class 2A state championship for the second year in a row Saturday night at War Memorial Stadium in Little Rock. “I can’t be prouder of the way our guys fought tonight,” Des Arc coach B.J. Paschal said. “We played a really good Fordyce team tonight. They outmatched us everywhere on the field. I’m so proud of those guys. “The worst part of the end of the football season is saying bye to those seniors. That’s where I am right now. This has been a great year.” Des Arc (13-1) never led and trailed 35-20 with 10:28 left in the game after Fordyce’s
JaQuez Cross scored on an 18-yard run. The Eagles scored a touchdown on its next possession, driving 71 yards in 11 plays with Jack Kearby scoring on a 2-yard run with 6:27 left in the game. The Eagles were stuffed on the twopoint conversion, leaving Fordyce ahead by two scores. Des Arc forced the Redbugs to turn the ball over on downs at its 10-yard line with 2:21 left. The Eagles scored on a 5-yard touchdown pass from Luke Morton to Brayden Pickrell with 13 seconds left. The two-point conversion, for the fourth time in five tries, failed, leaving the score at 35-32. Des Arc kicker Jarrett Hambrick’s onside kick attempt was recovered by Fordyce’s Weston Gambill to preserve the victory for the Redbugs.
“I’m very proud of the way they fought in the second half,” Paschal said of his team. “I’m so proud of them. That’s all I can say.” Cross, who was named the game’s most valuable player, led all rushers with 228 yards on 17 carries. He scored on runs of 41, 55 and 18 yards. Gary Lewis added 108 yards on 11 carries. He scored on runs of 43 and 30 yards. “Their backfield is amazing,” Paschal said of Fordyce. “Their offensive linemen are huge. They were twice our size. They scored 35 points on us. Nobody has scored that much on us all year. It was tough. They are good.” Des Arc and Fordyce each scored five touchdowns, but the Eagles only converted one two-point conversion. “That’s the difference in the game,” Paschal
said. “They stopped us down on the goal line.” Eyan Holloway led Des Arc with 102 yards rushing on 16 carries. He scored on a runs of 7 and 3 yards. Kearby had 77 yards on 22 carries. Trevinos Reed had 75 yards on 11 carries. He also scored on a 20-yard run in the first quarter. Morton had his best passing game of the season. He completed 6 of 11 for 102 yards. He also rushed for 64 yards on 11 carries. “I think that is probably the toughest kid playing quarterback that I have ever seen,” Paschal said of Morton, who suffered a dislocated left elbow in the Eagles’ win
over Bigelow in the state quarterfinals. “He went to the doctor, and they said if he could take the pain, he could play. He has done it. I couldn’t have done it. I can’t speak more highly of him. I think colleges should be offering him. There is no doubt in my mind. He’s a playmaker. I say he’s a coach on the field all the time.” Des Arc’s Jacob Dodson caught 3 passes for 44 yards. Also catching passes were Holloway and Reed. Kearby, Cooper Childers and Chance Eldridge led Des Arc with five tackles each. Reed and Hambrick had four tackles each. Dodson also had an interception.
DeValls Bluff begins process for new water plant and tower By Lisa Mills At the December 10th city council meeting, Mayor Brooks Castleberry reported that the engineer hired to oversee the new water plant project has almost finished the necessary paperwork to begin the project. Attending the meeting were Mayor Brooks C a s t l e b e r r y , Treasurer/Recorder Darlene Connor and council members Marie Flanagan, Carol Griffin, Alice Metcalf, Richard Henry, Raymond
Watson and Shirley Goff. The council approved the purchase of a new backhoe. The backhoe will be purchased from Prairie Implement in Stuttgart for approximately $90,000 to be paid from the water, gas and street funds. Sheriff Rick Hickman reported 162 patrols and 7 calls for November. The calls included 4 first responder calls, 2 disturbances and 1 traffic complaint. Howard Carrell addressed the council concerning his Main
Street property. He stated that he, Mayor Castleberry contractors Andy Peeks and Eric Rollins met at the property to determine what needed done and when work could begin. A plan of action was set in place to begin cleaning debris and shoring up the structure the second week of January. Carrell asked the council to extend his eviction notice and let him move forward with the restoration plans. Council members Alice Metcalf and Shirley Goff stated they would like to continue to give Carrell a chance to move forward. No action was taken a motion approved to table the matter until the January meeting.

Linda Kay Lilly Buffalo Linda Kay Lilly Buffalo, 59, of Lonoke died Dec. 8, 2020, after a short bout with cancer. Linda was born Oct. 16, 1961, to Joe Henry and Leara D e a n n e Lilly in Little Rock, Arkansas. Linda was the youngest of four children. She graduated from Lonoke High School in 1979 and earned a bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock in 1983. She returned to Lonoke as a teacher, working there for the next 37 years, including 27 as a seventh-grade English teacher at Lonoke Junior High/Middle School and 10 years as a special education teacher after earning her master’s degree in special education from UALR. Linda was involved in many things during her teaching career. She was a longtime cheer sponsor for both the junior high and high school Jackrabbits cheerleaders. Linda also worked the gates at both Lonoke football and basketball games and would always find a way to go to away games with some of her best friends. In December 1999, Linda married her husband Mark, whom she met at a track meet in 1997. She and Mark would attend Lonoke, Carlisle and Cabot games while Mark was covering them for the local newspapers. Linda and Mark’s greatest joy came in 2009 when they finally became parents to An Qing Shu, a 2-year-old Chinese girl. That child is now Mary Elisabeth. Linda was preceded in death by her parents and sisters-in-law Gabrielle Lilly and Elizabeth Lilly. She is survived by her husband Mark and daughter Emmy of Lonoke; brother Joe Lilly and wife Deborah of New Tazewell, Tenn.; brother

Steven Lilly of Lonoke; sister Leara Beth Carmical and husband Donny of Cabot; nieces Deanna Lovelady, Kortney Strange, Kaycee Ford, Heather and Kaitlyn Buffalo; and nephews Jay and Orion Lilly and Devon Buffalo. The family would like to thank the staff at UAMS and Arkansas Hospice for their care during Linda’s illness. Memorials may be made to the Lonoke Scholarship Foundation. A private service was held Friday, Dec. 11, at Boyd Funeral Home at 10 a.m. Burial was in Old Carlisle Cemetery, everyone is invited to attend the graveside service.
Jamesetta Brown Jamesetta Brown, 87 of Little Rock, formerly of Biscoe, passed away on F r i d a y morning, December 4 at her home. Jamesetta was born December 19, 1932 in Biscoe, Arkansas to James Walton and Rosetta Rhoden-Walton. She was the widow of Mattison “Will” Brown. Jamesetta attended school at the Biscoe Public Schools. She was a 1952 graduate of Biscoe High School. Jamesetta was a lifelong member of Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church in Biscoe, where she sang in the church’s choir and was longtime member of the Finance Committee. Jamesetta worked as a Home Health Care Aide for many years with Carelink before she retired. She had formerly worked for UAMS in Little Rock and Murry’s Restaurant in DeValls Bluff. Her parents, her husband, one son Vincent Brown, two grandchildren: Terren “TJ” Brown and Angela ‘Bay-Bay” Brown, and a brother Oscar James Walton all preceded Jamesetta in death. Survivors are: three sons: Darriel Brown and Michael Brown both of Little Rock, AR; and Willie Brown of Conway, AR; three daughters Denise Kay (Grady) Brown-Fuller and Deborah Duncan both of Little Rock, AR; and Leeretta Winston of Conway, AR; fourteen grandchildren and thirty-two great grandchildren, her brother L.B.
Walton of Toledo, OH; and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held on Saturday, December 12 at 10 AM at Mount Arratt Baptist Church, 908 North Beech Street in Beebe with Reverend Jerome Harris officiating. Phyllis Evelyn (Adams) Cook Phyllis Evelyn (Adams) Cook passed away peacefully to heaven surrounded by her loving family on December 7th, 2020. Phyllis was born in M a i n e , March 16, 1933. She later moved to California where she met her future husband, Jerry Cook. They married and moved to Jerry's home state of Arkansas where they raised their family. She enjoyed reading, painting, and cats. Phyllis had a generous heart and a deep and genuine love for her family. Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, Evelyn and Augustus Adams and her brother, Charles Adams. She is survived by her brother David (Fran) Adams, her daughter Cynthia Campbell, her son Michael Cook, her daughter Patricia Cook, her son Bryan (Danielle) Cook, and her daughter Rebecca (Eddie Barthol) Hutson. She is also survived by 17 Grandchildren, and 12 Great Grandchildren. Phyllis will be greatly missed and hold a beautiful place in the hearts of her family and all who knew her.
A small private memorial will be held for the immediate family. In lieu of flowers, a donation of any amount may be made in honor of Phyllis to St. Jude's Children's Hospital, which was very dear to her heart.
James Eddie King
James Eddie King plowed his last field on December 10th, 2020. He was born to farmers, Jesse and Pe a r l i e King in M a c o n County, TN on December 3rd, 1927. The family left the hills during the Great Depression and headed to the land of opportunity. They settled in Wattensaw, a little community in Lonoke County, Arkansas where he carried on the family tradition of working the land. He was brought up during hard times and he was a hard man most of his days. While he became a man with a deep faith in Christ he always struggled to accept the forgiveness of past wrongs that comes with knowing your Creator. Carrying a burden like that can make a man quite the mix of sweet and salty. "Eddie" as he was known spent his life farming the family land, tinkering on old cars and equipment and was always looking for a good deal. He never missed an opportunity to "pick and grin" with local musicians and knew how to make a dobro sing its own song. The familiar melodies of Orange Blossom Special and I'll Fly Away were often heard pouring out across the farm. He was a quick-witted man with a great sense of humor and loved to tell a good story. You would often find him and at least one of his brothers or sisters gathered around a kitchen table telling tall tales over a

cup of coffee. Eddie loved his family deeply even though he didn't quite know how to show it. He was quick to tell anyone that would listen about how beautiful his daughters Diane and Dixie were and how his son, Alan could build or fix anything. He has been reunited with his parents Jesse and Pearlie as well as his brothers Jay, Joe, and Tommy King. Looking forward to seeing him again is his first love Mary King, his daughters Diane Coffman (Dempsie), Dixie Gentry (Mike), his son, Alan King (Nina), two sisters, Dixie Wynne and Mary Gruenke (Dave), nine grandchildren and ten greatgrandchildren. Eddie is now experiencing the extravagant love of Jesus that he couldn't quite grasp here on earth and leaves behind a legacy of hard work, humor, and great story-telling that lives on through his family. A graveside service was held at New Hope Cemetery in Lonoke, Arkansas on December 14th at 2:00PM with Brother Fred Dollar officiating.
Addie L. Petrus Addie L. Petrus (92) of Carlisle passed away on December 12, 2020. She was preceded in death by her parents, Marshall Hillyard and Blanche
Young Hillyard; her husband, Vincent Petrus; grandson Andy Petrus; brother Ernest Hillyard; sisters, Jo Flynn and Cora Dabbs. She is survived by her children; Anne Anderson,Janet Petrus, Jimmy Petrus, Susan Bransford (Rick), and Bobby Petrus (Shari); six grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and three great, great, grandchildren. Addie was a farmer’s wife, a loving mother and a great cook. You could always count on her to be honest. She worked hard and was happiest shelling peas or canning green beans. Many still the remember the exceptional Snow Village display that adorned her living room window each Christmas for over a decade. The children would like to gratefully acknowledge Dr. James Kane and Linda Doyle for excellent care they provided their mother for over 40 years. Funeral services were Tuesday, December 15, 2020 at 10:30 AM at St. Rose Catholic Church in Carlisle with burial following at the Carlisle Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Rose Catholic Church P.O. Box M, Carlisle, Arkansas 72024. Arrangements were by Westbrook Funeral Home of Hazen.
