Managing yield, costs are a necessity Their family manages 1157 acres of land dedicated to growing rice, yielding around 190 bushels per acre. The other 2000 remaining acres are all dedicated to growing soybeans, averaging a yield of 58 bushels per acre. The Lisko family provides crop yield for Riceland Foods, serving as an independent operator outside of the company. When asked about farm management, Roger writes, “My goal is always to get the best yield out of my crops. Reducing input cost, while maintaining a quality yield is a goal as well. Yields have been good, but there’s always room for improvement.”

Solving problems is always a full time job on a family farm When it comes to solving problems around the operation, Roger goes on to write, “There are 3 issues that come to mind. The first is the dropping water table. As a result, we have built reservoirs and tail water recover systems to preserve as much surface water as possible.
Second, is the issue of finding and keeping good help. Finding individuals who are reliable and willing to put in the long hours that go along with the job is tough. In order to attract and keep good employees, I have had to pay competitively and offer other incentives.
Finally, finding parts can be difficult. Many businesses are not carrying as many parts on hand as they once did. To address this issue, we do a lot of preventative maintenance during the winter months in order to prevent breakdowns during the busy periods.”

Future preparedness on the horizon
When asked about future plans, Roger writes, “I have several plans for improving my farming operation. Land leveling is a top priority. This will allow us to conserve water and produce better yields. Also, continuing discussions with landlords about building reservoirs on their properties will be beneficial. Adding underground irrigation pipe is another feature that will allow for multi-inlet irrigation. This will allow for faster and easier watering capabilities.” As for environmental and eco-friendly conservation solutions, Roger writes, “I have employed several practices to protect the environment as well as conserve soil, water, and energy. I apply fertilzier within 48 hours of planting in order to have the fertilizer incorporated prior to a
rain to prevent runoff of fertilizer. For erosion purposes, I install drop pipes and leave grass lines around fields were feasible. For conservation of energy, I have installed a variable speed electric
motor, which allows me to adjust the speed of the motor and save electricity. To conserve water, I have done land leveling and also built reservoirs and tail water recovery ditches.”
