Tornados hit Arkansas...

On Friday afternoon, March 31, a tornado passed south of Hickory Plains on its way to points northeast. A tremendous amount of damage was done throughout the state, especially in the Little Rock and Wynne areas. Most of the school in Wynne was destroyed, and the Methodist Church was damaged. The Prairie County 4-H members and Hazen High School are collecting articles for storm relief in the Wynne area this week. The Hazen High FFA will be travelling to Wynne to help with the clean up. There is information about the 4-H collection on page 6 of this edition of the paper. This photo was taken by by Bruce Felts looking west from his home in the Walter’s Chapel area.

Des Arc School Board to purchase scoreboard

At the Des Arc School Board meeting on March 27th, the board approved the purchase of a new scoreboard at the football field at a total cost of $31,441.86.

Farmers and Merchants Bank is donating $15,000 and D3 Auto Sales is donating $4,500 for the play clock. This will leave a balance of $11,941.86 for the school

to pay. The new scoreboard should be up and working at the beginning of the 2023 football season.

The board accepted the resignation of cafeteria worker Mary Ann Hood effective immediately. Resignations were accepted for FACS teacher May Lynn Guidry, High School English teacher Hallie Fleck, and High School

L ocal v etera n s ho n ored

English teacher Janice McFarlin effective at the end of the school year.

The board approved staff transfers for Brandi Long from 7th grade teacher to FACS teacher, and Cory Gibson from 2nd grade teacher to 7th grade teacher for the 20232024 school year, and Katrina Dillehay from

Custodian/Cafeteria worker to Cafeteria worker only effective immediately. Autumn Payne was hired as the Junior High Cheer Coach.

A motion was passed to renew the Physical and Occupational Therapy contract for Special Education for 20232024. A motion was also passed to renew the

Health Risk Insurance for the year 2023-2024. Attending the meeting were Superintendent Dr. Marc Sherrell, High School Principal B. J. Paschal, Elementary Principal Cheryl Holland, and board members Drew Widener, Brent Calhoun, Johnny Reidhar, Jordan Smith, and T.J. English.

The David Lee Bennett farm, one mile north of I-40, now supports more than rice or soybeans. It’s the new home of the asphalt plant that is supplying asphalt for the resurfacing of I-40 from Lonoke to DeValls Bluff. The work which is being done at night has begun on the eastbound lanes between Lonoke and Hazen. (Debbye Harrison photo.)

his family. He served a term in the Army as a paratrooper. After his service, he joined his father as a millwright.

He was quite mischievous in his youth and loved sharing his adventures. Growing up in Detroit, he would grab onto the bumper of passing cars on snowy nights and “ski” through the neighborhood with his friends. Charles was well-known for his dry sense of humor and witty sayings such as, “I’m all messed up this morning because when I got up, I put my socks on the wrong feet.” He loved spending time with his family including Sunday dinner at his mom’s house when his children were young and holiday celebrations with his grandchildren. Robert Wayne Raney

Robert Wayne Raney (Coach Raney) passed away on Monday, March 27th at the age of 74 surrounded by his three girls. He was born on December 23, 1948, in North Little Rock Arkansas to the late Robert Lee (Bob) and Mary Maxine Raney. He leaves behind a legacy of laughter, love, and elaborate (and often inappropriate) story telling. Wayne spent his childhood in Brinkley, Arkansas. When he was not causing trouble, he was playing sports. He excelled in sports, espe-

cially baseball. The friendships he made during these years stood the test of time as his Brinkley graduating class of 1966 have remained close throughout his life. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve in 1967, receiving an honorable discharge in 1973. While in the Marine Reserves he attended the State Teacher College in Conway Arkansas (UCA) from 1969 until he graduated with his B.S.E. in 1973. During this time, he played four years for the UCA baseball team, where he was known as an outstanding pitcher. He also ran track for 1 year for UCA as a way to make amends for some trouble he caused on campus. He earned his Master of Science in Education from Arkansas State University in 1991. He found a way to continue to show off his athletic prowess by joining adult softball and football leagues in Marianna. He played many rounds and broke a few clubs at the golf course every summer. He was an avid duck hunter and always returned with a story to tell. He loved Saturday mornings with the ASU Indian Club and sharing ASU games and tailgates with his family and friends.

He started his 38 year coaching career at Lee Academy in Marianna, Arkansas where he coached football, baseball, basketball, golf, and track. In addition, he served as both Headmaster and Athletic Director until 2001. In 2001, he began his final decade of coaching and teaching with the Hazen School District. In Hazen he served as a football, basketball, and baseball coach as well as Athletic Director.

Career highlights include multiple championships--including M.P.S.A. state champi-

onships, multiple bowl game appearances, coaching three all-star games, and Coach of the Year in both the MCAA and MPSA, and breaking a 17 year streak to beat Hazen’s biggest rival, Carlisle.

He spent countless hours pouring himself into the lives of his players, students, and their families. The lessons he taught are passed on and will continue to impact those who knew him.

Coach Raney is preceeded in death by his parents, Bob and Maxine; sister, Becky Raney Trublood, uncle, Dean Raney, and a number of very special friends.

He is survived by his three girls, Mary Whitney Raney, Cayce Raney, and Chelsey Raney Harrison (BJ); his brothers David Raney (Nadean) and Billy Raney; mother of his girls, Cheryl, and many beloved in-laws, nieces, nephews, and friends.

The name Coach took on a whole new meaning to him three years ago when he became the grandfather of Maeve and Bishop Harrison.

The family would like to thank the Chambers Staff and close friends, Big Billy Lindsey, Coach Donnie Boothe, and Russ Sparks.

A memorial service to celebrate Coach Raney’s life was held at 2:03 pm on Friday, March 31st, at the Carlisle Civic Center: 215 South Court Street in Carlisle, Arkansas. The family received friends and loved ones before the service starting at 12:57 pm.

Arrangements by Westbrook Funeral Home of Hazen.

The Hazen Lady Hornets edged Des Arc 6-5 in softball action last week.

Des Arc led 4-1 after one inning. The Lady Eagles pushed their lead to 5-1 with a run in the bottom of the second. Hazen got that run back in the top of the

fourth then scored four runs in the top of the sixth to take a 6-5 lead.

Austyn Boon led Hazen with two runs scored. Also scoring were Lexi Dulaney, Savannah Glover and Allie Mooney. Mooney was 1 for 3 with two RBIs. Her lone hit was a triple. Dulany also had a triple.

Jordyn Besancon and Dulany had doubles. Dulany struck out 16 Des Arc hitters in the victory.

Mackenzie Williams led Des Arc with two runs. Also scoring were Kymber Buckner, Kaylee McDonald and Grace Knight. McDonald struck out 12 Hazen hitters.

As a graduate of Carlisle High School, I was really hoping that the Bison would beat Hazen for the Class 2A state title in football last December. But after seeing some shocking news last week on social media, I’m kind of rethinking that.

Former Hazen football, baseball, and girls basketball coach Wayne Raney died after a long illness. He had been in Chambers Nursing Home in Carlisle for several years. Coach Raney retired from teaching after 38 years, including his last 10 years at Hazen High School. I got to know Coach Raney, first, through girls’ basketball and baseball, then watched him coaching the Hornets during football games. For years, Carlisle dominated the Hornets, but Coach

Raney’s team finally broke through in 2004 and 2005, ending Carlisle’s 17-year streak.

He and I would give each other a hard time about the CarlisleHazen rivalry, but his daughters Whitney and Chelsey always told me that their dad respected the work I did for the Carlisle Independent and now the Grand Prairie Herald, where I’ve been the sports editor since November 2019.

I can remember a few times after Coach Raney retired, he would come to games, and while he had issues talking, I knew from his facial expressions that he would give me all kinds of “crap” if he could. I thought the world of Coach Raney, and it even grew when I found out a few years back that he and my aunt,

Aunt Janice said that Coach Raney was her headmaster at the school. She would come to visit him when she came to Carlisle to check on my Nana before she died in 2016.

From everyone I’ve talked to, Coach Raney was a popular figure. All his players seemed to love and care for him. I can honestly say that I’m a better person for having known him.

So, please pray for his family and the entire Hazen Hornet community. And I’ll say this for one reason and one reason only, I’m glad that Coach Raney got to witness his Hornets beating the Carlisle Bison for their first-ever state championship in football.

I’m so poor I can’t pay attention ...

Occasionally I go to my computer and search for the wealthiest preachers in America. I am curious to know who came up with this idea, but I check it out occasionally to see who they are. As often as I have checked this information, I have never found my name on that list. I so much wanted to see my name on that list. Everybody knows that the Internet never lies.

So, I need to accept that I am not one of the wealthiest preachers in America. Poor me!

That may explain many things in my life that I did not quite understand before. When traveling in the Sissy Van, The Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage is always behind the steering wheel. I make it a point not to drive that Sissy Van anymore than I have to.

As we drive, my wife will say, "Did you see that car? They're from Idaho."

Of course, I did not see it because I was not paying attention. When The Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage drives, she focuses on everything within her focus. Even when driving my truck, and she is in the passen-

ger seat, she sees everything around her. Do not let this get back to her, but she sees things that I do not think exist. I will never contest her on that subject.

Unlike my wife, I don't have that much focus to see everything that is happening around me.

Once when she asked me if I saw something, I replied, "No, I'm just too poor to pay attention."

I laughed, of course, but she didn't think it was funny.

Driving across town to church one Sunday morning, she said, "Did you see that sign? What did it say?"

I didn't see it, so I responded, "I'm sorry, but I'm too poor to pay attention." Then I chuckled. She just threw me one of her infamous grimaces.

For some reason, she believes I should pay attention to everything around me. I don't know why because I'm not interested in many of the things around me. And, I am too poor to pay attention. While driving to an appointment the other day, I asked, "Could I borrow a dollar from you?"

She looked at me quizzically and said, "Why do you need a dollar from me?" "Oh," I said softly, "I just need some money to pay attention while you're driving." She did not respond to me; of course, she never gave me that dollar. So I tried to explain to her that it is very expensive to pay attention. I don't think she believed me. Several weeks later, we went to our Sunday morning church service, and I noticed a license plate and said, "Look at that license plate. They're from Montana." There was silence on the other side of the car, and finally, she looked at me and said, "Where did you get that dollar?" I had no idea what she was talking about, so I just said, "What dollar are you talking about?" She snickered like I had not heard her snicker in a long time and said, "You know, the dollar so that you can pay attention."

The only thing I can say is that she has enough money to pay attention to everything, even some things I don't know. Having enough money to pay attention to everything around you must be nice. I'm sure

my life would change if I could afford to pay attention to everything.

The Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage can pay attention even when fast asleep. One time we were taking a trip to St. Augustine. She leaned back in her side and took a nap. At least, I thought she was asleep. I was coming to where I needed to turn, but I wasn't sure if this was the right place. As I slowed down, I heard The Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage say, "No, you need to turn at the next light." Looking over, I saw her eyes were closed, and it looked like she was sound asleep. She is rich enough to pay attention even when she is sound asleep.

I often wonder where she has all this money, probably in the Central Bank of Mind Your Own Business. Watching television, suddenly, The Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage said, "Did you see that? I wonder who that is?"

I begin to say, "No…." My wife jumped in and said, "I know, dear, you're too poor to have paid attention." Boy, has she got me figured out? I'm going to

have to open up some kind of a savings account, maybe a little piggy bank, and try to save up enough money to finance my poor attention. So far, The Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage has refused to loan me money for this cause. During my Bible reading recently, I read 1 Timothy 6:9-10, "But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition. For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows." Being rich does have its challenge, which I will never face. The disturbing aspect of this passage is where Paul says, "the love of money is the root of all evil." That is my temptation.

Prairie County 4-Hers compete in spring break “Cupcake Wars”

“Cupcake Wars” camps for children and preteens, were conducted over Spring Break by Amanda Stark, 4-H Program Assistant, of the Prairie County Cooperative Extension. Each camp was a huge success and future camps are already in the planning process. The camp is structured with the participants making two different cupcakes each day. The first cupcake they had to make was with a

secret ingredient and the second had to be themed. The older kids made them nearly independently, but the younger kids had some assistance from our teen 4-H members who helped conduct the camp. The goal was for them to be able to follow a recipe, measure correctly, and work together as a team. At the end of each day, we had four judges (Jay Bednar, Mitzi Osborne, Janis Toll, and Sue Clayton) taste the cupcakes. Sue Clayton said

there wasn’t a bad cupcake, and Jay Bednar has already volunteered to help judge the next cooking camp that will be held this summer. Our April 4-H meetings will be held on April 19th at the Hazen Community Center from 3:30 pm to 5:00 pm and on April 26th at Gospel Mission Church in Des Arc from 3:30 pm to 5:00 pm. To join Prairie County 4-H contact Amanda Stark at 870998-2614 or astark@uada.edu.

Marek meets with legislators...

On March 27-29 over 400 administrators from across the United States attended the 2023 National School Leaders Advocacy Conference. On March 29 these administrators were given the opportunity to meet with their state Senators and Representatives. Amy Marek, the Hazen High School principal, was a participant in this event with three other administrators from Arkansas. Topics of discussion included the educator shortage, educator loan forgiveness, and support for mental health, wellness and safety in schools.
