Bayou Meto and I have a greater appreciation of it now. Like Bayou Meto, as soon as we have water we could service some farms right now,” Sawser said. “I know this has been decades in the making and I’m only scratching the surface at the dedication. We are very close; I realize we are at the eleventh hour. On behalf of the Corp, we want to get these projects there. There is a lot of salty history and history that is unfortunate, but I’m at the point where let’s get it done.” Senator Boozman visited with the group on Wednesday, Aug. 24, at the completed Downs Road crossing. “I was just getting updated on the timeline and it looks like we are in a good place. We are working hard to get the funding that we can and just as importantly trying to coordinate and push the timeline and making sure that things are going smoothly,” Boozman explained. “It wouldn’t have happened without you guys hanging in there for so long. Especially this year the two things that everybody looks at and how they forecast the future as far as problems are energy and water. This year with the drought out west of here is a huge problem and we have had some problems in Arkansas as it just gets drier and drier. It really illustrates the importance of these kind of projects. It is not just helping you, the farm community, but to help a viable, stable water supply. It is all about the aquifers and this whole region of the country. Again, for so many reasons it is an important project. You should all give yourselves a pat on the back, somebody has got to do it. What it is, is everyone working together.”WRID is currently working along Old Highway 70 Road constructing the Canal 2000 portion of the project. The phase of the project is fully funded by NRCS and loans from the Arkansas Department of Agriculture for construction to the Hazen Airport. The entire project, once complete, will bring water to area farmers in portions of Prairie, Arkansas, Lonoke and Monroe Counties. Other recent work includes the Downs Road crossing, which is located just North of Highway 70 near DeValls Bluff. This work was done in what WRID describes as the Canal 1000 portion of the project. The Canal 1000 dirt work was completed in December. Previous work includes a pump station, 7,500 feet of twin 10-foot diameter pipelines and the regulating reservoir constructed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Bells across America

By Judi Jones Grand AmericanDaughtersPrairieoftheRevolution

On September 17, at 4:00 PM, from sea to shining sea, bells will ring across America in celebration of the United States Constitution. It was on this date in 1787, at the Pennsylvania State House, now better known as Independence Hall, that the framing of the U.S. Constitution culminated at about 4:00 PM after 100 days of intense conversation andAreadeliberation.churches and court houses will take part in this observance by ringing bells for the Bells Across America campaign which is an annual celebration of the signing of the Constitution. Much as the church bells of Philadelphia rang out when the Constitution was first signed at 4 PM on September 17, 1787, area churches will ring bells their bells for one minute at 4:00 to herald the beginning of this commemorative week. This celebration came about because the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution petitioned Congress and in1956 President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed it into public law.The aims of Constitution Week are to emphasize citizens’ responsibilities for protecting and defending the Constitution, to inform people that the Constitution is the basis for America’s great heritage and the foundation for our way of life, and to encourage the study of historical events which led to the framing of the Constitution So listen for those bells on September 17, at 4:00 PM and take a few minutes to reflect upon the Founding Fathers who gave their all in framing this great Constitution and upon those many brave Patriots who fought and died to ensure it was enforced.

William Joseph (Joe) Hurley, Sr. of Hazen, AR stepped into eternity and at St. Vincent Hospital in Little Rock, Arkansas to James Earl Hurley, Sr. and Lula Elizabeth Redditt Hurley. Along with his parents and three siblings, Joe moved from place to place with his father’s job before landing in Shreveport, LA. He graduated high school from Captain Shreve High School in 1974 and began his career in the restaurant business where he discovered his first passion- serving others. Joe worked in and managed various restaurants before he started his career with Corky’s BBQ where he was tasked with getting the location in West Little Rock started, and where he met the love of his life, Sheila. From there, the two moved state to state, building new locations from the ground up, hiring and training employees, and getting the restaurants up and running, together. In 2001, they moved to Sheila’s hometown of Hazen where they opened the Hurley House Café. He loved his employees, our restaurant, and the little town of Hazen. After becoming clean and sober in 2007, Joe discovered his second passion in life- sponsoring, mentoring, and advocating for others struggling with addiction. He was an inspiration to those on their journey with recovery and touched the lives of so many people. In 2010, Joe gave his life to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and was saved and baptized that year. Shortly after, he discovered his third and final passionspreading the Word of Jesus Christ. In 2013, he went on his first mission trip to Honduras, where he completed a total of 6 missions there. Joe was often to referred to as “No Ordinary Joe,” and was truly one of a kind. He had a genuine way of caring for others, making people laugh, and he was a devoted father and husband. When he wasn’t working or spending time with his family, he and Sheila loved riding his bike with his dear friends, “The Skittles,” Scott, Deborah, Allen, Brenda. Joe was preceded in death by his parents and his brother John Hurley. He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Sheila Hurley of Hazen, his children, Amanda Melton (Todd) of Maumelle, Franci Hurley Corr (Jim) of De Berry, TX, William Joseph (Joey) Hurley, Jr (Brandy) of Hazen, Brittany Hurley Aycock (Parker) of Slovak, 10 grandchildren, Kayla Flynn (James), Taylor Solberg (Caleb), Jonathan Lott, Aidan Corr, Brooks Melton, William Joseph Hurley, III, Rylan Corr, Lola Melton, Zeke Melton, and Rhett Aycock, churchARP.O.ChristianthroughHondurasmemorialsinStuttgartbeanyHazendiatelyPM.funeral1:00PMVisitationHazen,Christian2022Sunday,4:7thethefight,friends.otherandHurleyonein-lawJacksonville,(Nancy)onechildanotherGabbyBrysongreat-grandchildren,twoFlynnandFlynn,andgreat-grand-expectedin2023,brother,JimHurleyofonesister-SandieHurley,sister,JacquiofSherwood,anabundanceoffamilyand“IhavefoughtthegoodIhavefinishedrace,Ihavekeptfaith.”2TimothyServiceswereheldonSeptember4,atFamilyFellowshipinArkansas.wasatfollowedbyaserviceat3:00Intermentimme-followedattheCemetery.ThefamilyrequestsfloralarrangementsmadethroughFlower&GiftStuttgart,AR,andbemadetoMissionsFamilyFellowship,Box982,Hazen,72064tobuildainhishonor.

The combination of creativity and technology means there is potential for tourism in all areas of Arkansas, not just in the well-known tourist destinations and the cities known for art galleries, museums and theater.Forexample, GIS tours allow visitors to take self-guided tours that in Arkansas could include an old churches trail, a quilting trail, a BBQ joint trail and a murals trail. The Arts and Technology Boot Camp supports making broadband accessible in every part of Arkansas, and providing grants to support local efforts. A regional approach may be necessary in order to “connect and amplify” art and technology programs in sparsely populated rural areas.Members of the Arts and Technology Boot Camp recommended creation of a ativewouldCommittee,DevelopmentForestryislativesubcommitteepermanentoftheleg-Agriculture,andEconomicwhichfocusonthecre-economy. in
In Texarkana the legislators heard from educators about the role of the arts in the robotics program at local schools.Theadvertising industry values graphic design, which is also used in creating job training videos and architectural designs. Graphic design is essential for aerospace companies that build airplanes with custommade interiors, and for furniture makers and boat manufacturers that make customized products. With new incentives, Arkansas could attract more film companies to produce more movies here.Colleges and universities could offer more credit hours in film production and music recording. Arkansas colleges offer classes in 3D printing technology, which has applications in manufacturing, the aerospace industry, health care, dentistry and product design. I must confess I heavily lean towards being a workaholic; I just love working and keeping myself busy. Years ago, I discovered that the busier I am, the less liable I am to get into trouble. No matter the trouble, I just don’t like it. Sitting at my desk working on a project is the theme of my life. The other day I took a little break, got a cup of coffee, sat down, and caught up with the news on TV. Just as I was ready to turn off the TV, there was a commercial of some ice cream company, I don’t remember which one but the focus was on a banana split. I didn’t have too much interest and just returned to my office.AsI was working, I started thinking about that banana split. I couldn’t remember the last time I had a banana split, but it has been quite a while. Why that commercial buzzed in my head is beyond me.Ishook my head and returned to my work, but it didn’t last long. I had a banana split on my mind. If The Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage knew I was thinking about a banana split, she would have something to say about it. I just shook my head and chased those banana split thoughts right out. It didn’t last long, and a song began dancing in my head, “Tra la la, one banana, two banana.” Where that came from, I have no idea. I had never heard that song before in my life, or at least I cannot remember ever hearing it. I set back in my chair and began thinking about that delicious banana split and how I would enjoy it. Not too long ago, an ice cream truck set up not far from our house. I remember one of the things they had to offer was a banana split. At first, I didn’t think too much about it, but now it was beginning to dance in my mind like neverUnablebefore.tofocus on my work, I began thinking of how I could sneak out, go and get one of their banana splits. Then, of course, The Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage would have nothing to do with this. I’m on a special diet that does not include banana splits, at least in her opinion. If I could sneak out and get a banana split without her finding out, that would cause me to ease back on my thinking about banana splits all day long. The trouble is, how do I sneak out without getting caught?Ithought about it and could not come up with any solution. Certainly, there has to be something I could do to get out of the house without being questioned by her Majesty.Sincemy office is in the home now, I do not have the freedom I once had. I have to devise a foolproof plan for The Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage.I’venever had this happen before, but I was becoming obsessed with a banana split. Why? I have no idea why it obsessed me like this. After all, it’s not an Apple Fritter! Maybe I can go to the post office and pick up the mail? Or, maybe my wife would like me to pick something up at the grocery store? Maybe I need to get gas in my truck? The ideas flowed in my direction, and I hoped to devise the perfect plan. After all, The Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage has perfect plans for everything. If only I could set her down and have her explain how she would handle this situation and how in the world I could fool her and go get my banana split. Suddenly, my wife appeared at my office door and said, “I have a headache, and I’m going to go to bed and sleep this off. Maybe you can get your own lunch today.”Talkabout being handed a golden goose; my plan came together. I could sneak out while she was sleeping and get that infamous banana split I’ve been thinking about all morning.Waiting a few minutes after she went to bed, I very carefully snuck out, got into my truck and drove to the ice cream truck. I sat there and enjoyed a wonderful banana split. Then, as I was eating, I sang, “Tra, la, la, one banana, two banana.”Iwasrather ecstatic as I drove home, parked the truck and went inside the house still singing. Then, as I went inside, The Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage was standing there, looking at me with both hands on her hips, and said, “And where were you?” Trying to change the subject, I asked how her headache was, but it did not work, as usual. So I decided to tell her the truth and take my punishment like a husband. As I humbly returned to my office, I thought of what King Solomon once said. Proverbs 12: 22, “Lying lips are abomination to the Lord: but they that deal truly are his delight.” Although I sometimes think that lying is a strategy to get me out of trouble it always has the opposite effect. I’m not smart enough to be a good liar. Also, to be a good liar you have to a very good memory of which I don’t. Telling the truth is one thing that delights the Lord. Dr. James L. The kids took it to heart. It’s like they knew exactly what play was coming each time. They did a really good job.“Our defense did a really good job dominating the game. Des Arc had less than 100 yards in total offense. They had one first down on our starting defense.”
