Army Field Band to perform free at GPC

Stuttgart, AR March 20, 2017-The internationally acclaimed United States Army Field Band of Washington, DC will continue its long tradition of presenting free public performances when it appears at Grand Prairie Center on Friday, March 31, 2017 at 7 p.m. The Army Field Band’s concert in Stuttgart is sponsored by the Phillips Community College Stuttgart Foundation. The Concert Band & Soldier’s Choir are the oldest and largest of The U.S. Army Field Band’s performance components. These two ensembles combine to present joint concerts on their national tours. They have performed in all 50 states and 30 foreign countries for audiences totaling hundreds of millions. The 65-member Concert Band and 29-member Soldiers’ Chorus perform regularly in some of the most famous concert halls

in the world, and just as often in the humblest auditoriums in the smallest of communities. The joining of these two ensembles allows them to offer unparalleled versatility of programming, ranging from orchestral masterworks and operatic aria to Sousa marches, jazz classics, and Broadway musicals. The band and chorus also perform independently and have recently shared the stage with such ensembles as the Boston Pops, The Cincinnati Pops, the Detroit Symphony “Orchestra, and the National Symphony Orchestra. In addition to their national tours, formal concerts, chamber recitals, and education outreach, members of the Concert Band and Soldier’s Chorus frequently represent the Army at formal and ceremonial functions, including the Presidential Inaugural

Parade, presidential funeral, the army AllAmerican Bowl, and diplomatic efforts overseas. More than six decades at the military’s most traveled musicians have earned them the tile, “The musical Ambassadors of the Army.” For additional information about the Army Field Band’s performance in Stuttgart, please contact Renee Robison, Executive Director at 870-673-4201, Ext. 1896. Tickets available online at www.pccua.edu/GPC. Yoder Ruritan Club will host a fish fry prior to the concert in Salon A of the Grand Prairie Center from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Drive through will also be available. Tickets are $13.00 per person and can also be purchased online at www.pccua.edu/GPC or call the Box office at 870673-4201, Ext. 1896.

Eight members were present: Janice Corpier, Bernadette Mosby, Lennie Holmes, Mitzi Osborne, Rita Farris, June Cox, Gladys Tucker, Rebecca Patterson, Juanita Hutchinson and guest Emily Seat. President Mitzi Osborne opened the meeting with the Thought of the Day followed by Juanita Hutchinson reading the inspiration. Secretary Janice Corpier called roll

and read the minutes from the February meeting which were approved as read. Treasurer Juanita Hutchinson presented the financial report which was filed for audit. With no unfinished business, new business was discussed. The recipient for the April Love Box (the club’s community service project) was decided. Members voted to donate to the Biscoe Cemetery in the memory of long time member Gladys Corpier. She will be included in the memorial at the state EH conference in June. March program leader Janice Corpier prepared

materials and supplies for members to create pinecone zinnias. She shared ideas for decorating with them. After adjournment, hostess Rebecca Patterson, served a delicious lunch of soup, cornbread and dessert. Then members enjoyed fellowship and a game of Hot Potato. March birthdays were Patsy Prince, Lennie Holmes, and Rebecca Patterson (95!). The April birthday on April 14 is Irene Hampton (90!) The club’s April meeting will be at the home of Irene Hampton on April 10 at 10:30 am. Come visit/join us!

Golden Rain Tree Latin: Laburmum x Watereri Vossii By: Gerald Klingaman, Retired Extension Horticulturist - Ornamentals I never met a tree I didn’t like, though there are a number of trees I’ve resisted planting. Like the bad kids our mothers warned us not to hang with, a number of trees have a sullied reputation. Golden Rain Tree (Laburnum x watereri ‘Vossii’) is such a tree. Beautiful to look at on a European vacation, but better left there. Laburnum is a genus of two species of the legume family native to the mountains of central and southern Europe where they potentially grow to 20 feet tall, round-topped specimens. “Vossii,” a late 19th century hybrid selected by a Dutch nurseryman from a cross between the two species, L. alpinum and L. anagyroides, is the only Laburnum likely to be found in the American nursery trade. Golden chain tree is an upright growing, stoutbranched tree which remains green into old wood. It has opposite leaf arrangement with trifoliate compound leaves with leaflets one to two inches long. Out of flower and during their slow, sometimes two-decade-long establishment period, they are often described as “scurfy” or “weedy” looking. But in flower, especially if seen on that afore mentioned European vacation, they are stunning. The variety ‘Vossii’ has fragrant, yellow, two-footlong pendulous panicles

of blooms in mid to late spring. A well-established tree will be cloaked in these panicles. Individual flowers are pea shaped and to about an inch long. “Vossii” is said to be sterile and not to produce the legume pods borne of the species. Laburnums have been grown throughout Europe for at least 400 years as garden plants, attaining the kind of status there that flowering dogwood does here. As with dogwoods, which are not especially well suited to European gardens, golden chain tree has not exactly flourished in the United States. It is best suited to the New England states and the Pacific Northwest. I have only seen two specimens in north Arkansas. One was young and flourishing while the other was languishing. Heat intolerance seems to be its major adaptational chall e n g e . Considered hardy from zones 5-7, it is best planted where it gets bright light and some afternoon shade. I planted two clones last winter so will be able to

add to the discussion in a more meaningful way in the years to come. All parts of the Laburnum are poisonous and every reference cautions against planting them where they could do harm. But, as with the majority of cases of using poisonous plants in gardens, reports of deaths are hard to find. In our overly protective world where we worry about minutia while ignoring lifestyle choices known to cause harm, laburnum poisoning is closer to being hit by a meteorite than a child being accidentally killed by an unsecured gun. Golden chain trees are probably best relegated to the plant nerd types than

average gardeners. It should be planted in fertile, well-drained soil. It tolerates dry conditions just fine, but dry and hot are a lethal combination. Locations where it receives afternoon shade are best or next to the north or east wall of a structure. Pruning should be avoided unless it is lower limb removal to facility movement in the garden. For more information about horticulture or to see other Plant of the Week columns, visit Extension’s Website, www.uaex.edu, or contact your county extension agent. The Cooperative Extension Service is part of the U of A Division of Agriculture.

Charles Spellman of DeValls Bluff, a local psychologist, has announced the publication of his first novel. The book, Jesus the 15th Messiah, is based on religion and science fiction. It deals with the Messiah, this one being the fifteenth, sent to a planet to spread religion and good will. However there are

evil forces afoot. They are trying to kill the Messiah to prevent him from spreading the word of God The book can be purchased through Xlibris Publishing or Amazon.com. Spellman has written a second book, a sequel, which will soon be sent to the publisher.
