Arkansas Game and Fish Officer Sayger presented a Live Alligator to students on May 13

National Honor Society Induction The National Honor Society induction ceremony was held Friday, May 13 in the Hazen Gym. New inductees are (left to right, front row:) Allie Burroughs, Abbi Ross, Payton Fought, Aimee Lease, Leah Miller, Larissa Harrison, (back row) Cutler Taylor, Abby Rounsavall, Morgan Carroll, Brittney Hubbard, and Faith Young.

The Hazen Pre-K students gathered around AGF Officer Sayger to get a closer look at the alligator while he informed the students about a few facts of the alli-

gator species. He later showed other classes the 5

year old alligator. The students were all amazed.

Lady Hornets fall in first round of State Playoffs to end season By David Hoover Hazen made the sixteen team class 2A softball playoff field for the second straight year but couldn't manage a win this season, falling to a Marmaduke team that sported a gaudy 24-2 record. The loss, their third in a row, dropped the Lady Hornets record to a disappointing16-12 on the season, not as good as they wanted and worse than last year's 24-7 record. Elizabeth Foot led off the Thursday morning game with a single to right field and went to second on a groundball but was left stranded when next two batters went down on strikes. The Lady Greyhounds quickly took

a lead they would never surrender when the Hornet defense failed them again. Marmaduke got its leadoff batter to third on a Hazen error and a wild pitch. The next batter singled her home for a 1-0 lead. After a ground ball out, another single brought in run number two and Hazen trailed 2-0 after one inning. Faith Young led off the second inning with a home run blast over the center field fence to close the gap but the next three batters went down on just six pitches. Allie Burroughs struck out the side in the bottom of the inning to keep the score at 2-1 after two innings. The Hornets went down 1-2-3 in the third and Marmaduke managed a single in their half of the inning but still only sent three batters to the plate, with the base runner being thrown out by Abby Rounsavall trying to steal second base. Young got her second hit after the first two batters were out in the fourth but she was left on the bases when the inning ended one out later. Burroughs alternated three outs and two hit batters in the fourth inning but didn't allow anyone to score leaving the game at 2-1 entering the fifth inning. Hazen managed to load the bases in the top of the inning after two outs but couldn't score. The Greyhounds made the Hornets pay for that failure, stretching their lead by plating four runs in the bottom of the fifth. They put together a rally with a little bit of everything including two

walks, two more Hornet errors, a balk, a wild pitch and a single. Four runs scored on only one base hit. Burroughs led off the sixth with a single, followed by Young's third hit of the game. After an out, Sydney Bateman singled to center scoring pinch runner Tracy Strong. The threat died on an inning ending double play and Hazen trailed 6-2. Two Marmaduke singles, a defensive interference call, a walk, a wild pitch and another Hornet error led to three more runs and a 9-2 Marmaduke lead after six innings. Hazen went down in order in the seventh to end the game and the season for the Lady Hornets. Young led all batters with three hits and has become one of the best hitters on the team. Foot added two hits as Hazen actually outhit Marmaduke 8-6 in the game. The Hornets made five errors while the Greyhounds were charged with only one for the game. Burroughs struck out ten and walked only three while giving up six hits. But she had to work hard, throwing 129 pitches through just six innings. Next year's team would seem to be poised for another good season as they only lose three seniors from this squad. Hitting and pitching appear to be strengths but the fielding and throwing must improve for them to take the next step and not just compete with the best but beat them. Congratulations Lady Hornets on a good season!
