Krzyzewski made a habit of putting his team through late-night practices, which were allowed under NCAA rules back then. “We would get back (from road games) at 2 in the morning,” Barto said. “That bus would drive right past the barracks and to the gym.” The players were grinding and Krzyzewski and his staff were right there with them. After that first win over Lehigh, the coaches went back to Krzyzewski’s on-campus housing in building with three apartments. As would happen even after he came to Duke, Krzyzewski enjoyed some food with his staff and they started breaking down film, preparing for the next opponent. In those early days, Mickie Krzyzewski prepared the meal. With win No. 1 in the books, it was time to get ready for Upsala, which Army played four nights later. “That type of training,” Krzyzewski says now, looking back. “I was never in combat during my military service. I was trained to do that. My training at West Point, for coaching combat, the survival stuff that you need to do everything you can do for your program to win. No way I would be where I am today without West Point and playing for coach Knight. But coaching at West Point, there’s no way I would be where I am today without being given that opportunity to be in that environment and become a coach.” That first year, in that first game, Krzyzewski displayed the intensity that’s been omnipresent during his Hall of Fame coaching career. But even when things didn’t work out, when the Cadets lost that season, he showed a deft touch. Take an overtime loss to St. Peters and the post-game locker room. “Coach doesn’t take losing easily,” Valerio said. “We are sitting with our heads down.” Then the young cadets heard something striking from Krzyzewski.

Coach Mike Krzyzewski directs his team at Army. “I don’t accept losing,” Krzyzewski told the team, “but I want to tell all of you that I’m proud of you. I’m proud to be your coach. You did everything I asked you to do. We lost and I don’t accept that. But you did everything I asked you do to.” Valerio and his teammates couldn’t wait to get better.

“It made you want to take off your uniform, put on practice gear and go to work,” Valerio said. Krzyzewski’s Army players have kept in touch with their old coach over the years. They returned to Cameron Indoor Stadium as group in 2011 for a celebration after Krzyzewski won his 903rd career game

to become men’s college basketball’s all-time wins leader. “We were lucky to be at the beginning when something special started,” Valerio said. “It allows you to kind of go back to the beginning with your teammates and coach. It made us realize how lucky we were to have him coach us.”

Krzyzewski more than a mentor for Moton BY BROOKE PRYOR

sports@heraldsun.com

DURHAM — Sunday’s win against St. John’s pushed Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski over the 1,000-win threshold. But ask N.C. Central coach LeVelle Moton, and he’ll tell you that Krzyzewski should’ve crossed that mark 10 games earlier. “When I got hired here (as an assistant), we played him in our first game,” Moton said. “He beat us by 1,000 in our first Division I basketball game. That was like 10 wins.” The Blue Devils beat the Eagles 121-56 in November 2007 — not quite by a margin of 1,000 points. It hasn’t been one of Krzyzewski’s more talked about games, and it’s likely one that most skim right over in reading his impossibly long list of accomplishments and wins. But for Moton, the game meant so much more than the final score. It was the beginning of an era for N.C. Central and the beginning of a friendship with a man just five minutes down the road. “He gave us a welcome to Division I,” Moton said. “Ever since then, we’ve formed a wonderful relationship.”

On the recruiting trail

Moton’s first interaction with Krzyzewski goes back far beyond their shared time as collegiate basketball coaches in Durham. Moton guesses he was just 14 years old the first time the two met. Krzyzewski was in the midst of building his empire at Duke, and Moton was in the infancy of his basketball career, playing on a North Carolina AAU basketball team with future all stars. “Our AAU team was myself,

Jerry Stackhouse and Chuck NCCU. More than two decades

Kornegay and Jef f Capel,” Moton said. “He was at a lot of our games. He was really recruiting Jeff, so I remember meeting him then.” Moton, a guard who graduated from Raleigh’s Enloe High School in 1992, was passed over by Krzyzewski on the recruiting trail. The Blue Devils were fully stocked at the guard position in his year, instead looking to build depth with fresh blood in the younger classes. But even without a scholarship offer from Duke, Moton found his way to Durham, playing his collegiate years at

after that first meeting, Moton and Krzyzewski are still in the same city.

Finding a mentor

Their relationship has evolved over the years. Moton is no longer a high school player, meeting a grownup recruiting one his friends. N o w, K r z y z e w s k i h a s become a mentor for Moton, a person he’s been able to turn to throughout his climb to become N.C. communicating. He gets everyone to play extremely hard.”

A mutual respect

Though Moton, who recently crossed a milestone of his own with his 100th win, admires Krzyzewski and his coaching techniques, he isn’t trying to duplicate his mentor’s style. “One thing I have learned from being over there so much is I can’t be him,” Moton said. “I can only be LeVelle Moton. I’m comfortable in my own skin and doing that. “It’s almost like baking a cake. I steal a little bit of this recipe and that recipe and whatever, but at the end, I’m going to be the guy that puts all the ingredients in and blend it and bake it. I’ve got to stand on that. I’m a much better LeVelle Moton than I am Coach K. I just try to stand on that.” Sure, Moton and Krzyzewski are competitors by virture, both holding positions as the head basketball coach at an NCAA Division I school, but the relationship between the two is defined by so much more. “He’s was one of the first people to call me when the accident happened with my son,” Moton said, referring to the burns his 1-year-old son suffered last March. “That just really meant a lot to me. There’s not a lot of people who have his cell phone number. Those little things are really sacred. He called me one time, he was on vacation, and congratulated me on my book. Just for him to extend and say look, ‘I’ll do the forward for your book if you need me.’ That’s written forever. That’s etched in stone. “I’m just grateful that he sees something in me. I don’t know what it is, but there’s a mutual attraction and a mutual respect, and I’m honored.”

milestones on the rise. At the Greensboro Coliseum in the ACC Tournament semifinals, Duke topped a top-ranked Tar Heel team that featured Michael Jordan, Kenny Smith and Sam Perkins in the starting lineup. First ACC championship March 8, 1986 – Duke 68, Georgia Tech 67 En route to their first Final Four appearance under Krzyzewski, the Blue Devils won the ACC Tournament for the first time during Krzyzewski’s tenure as Johnny Dawkins scored 20 points and Mark Alarie had 17 at the Greensboro Coliseum. assistant and then worked my way up,” Moton said. “I came, I started as a middle school basketball coach, as a high school coach. “So when I came here, I didn’t have a father that had been in the business or an uncle or anyone to show me the way. I had to do a trial by error. I was fortunate enough and I am for tunate enough that have a guy that will probably be on the Mount Rushmore of coaches five minutes away.” The first time Moton went to a Duke basketball practice, he knew exactly what he was going to do. Armed with a notebook and a pen, the then-newly promoted North Carolina Central head coach intended to write down every play Krzyzewski called for his Blue Devils. But shortly after arriving, Moton realized his strategy was futile. “After about 30 minutes into practice, I put the notebook down because I realized his greatest gift is just his ability to communicate to his players and get them to buy in,” Moton said. “That’s extremely difficult.” It’s that gift, that unparalleled ability, to get through to 20-somethings year after year, that will shape his legacy, Moton said. “I just remember sitting there,” Moton said. “It’s one thing that I think leads his legacy. If you ever watch a Duke basketball game, watch their huddle during timeouts and watch opposing teams huddles. It’s night and day. Their huddles, ever yone is almost two inches away from each other, they’re locked in. Everyone is looking at each other. “That’s just his technique of
