Spring is on the way! This issue of Senior Times is packed with lots of information and new programs. Spring is the perfect time to reassess those 2012 New Year’s resolutions. How about starting a new fitness class, taking an art class, volunteering or planning a spring trip? This year’s Older Americans Month theme “Never Too Old to Play” is perfect. What a great theme to encourage older Americans to stay engaged, active and involved in their own lives and in their communities. Orange County is a great place to age and we want to make it even better. If you haven’t gotten involved in the 2012-2017 Master Aging Plan (MAP) process, it is not too late. The work groups have been working for several months and a draft of the plan is almost complete. Copies will be available in March at the Senior Centers and on-line at www.orangecountync.gov/aging. We will also be hosting several public comment meetings, and I look forward to hearing from you.

Golden Age Happy Circle: Always on a Mission!

If you enjoy helping others in need, collaborating with community based organizations and the Senior Center on special projects, (i.e. the annual May Day Celebration), consider joining the Golden Age Happy Circle. Last year, it’s members collected approximately 300 lbs of donated food for the Inter-Faith Council (IFC), and raised $100, which was sent to the American Red Cross. In addition, benevolence and fruit baskets were delivered to sick and shut in persons throughout the year. The Golden Age Happy Circle meets the second Tuesday of the month at the Seymour Center. In addition, the club organizes one outing a year, celebrates members’ birthdays every quarter, and recognizes members for their volunteer services annually at the NC Association of Senior Clubs State District Conference. If you are interested in being a part of this organization, please contact Lula Alston at (919) 967-5706.

Two Keys to Defying Gravity

We’ve all experienced it. We’re walking along, perhaps on uneven ground or a slippery surface, when one foot goes out from under us and down we go! As we get older, these types of occurrences may become more frequent. Defying gravity – by staying upright on our feet – can become more difficult for many different reasons. We may not have as much leg strength as when we were younger. In addition, the sensory systems that tell us how we are oriented in space can undergo age-related changes that affect balance. Fortunately, you can hone your gravity-defying skills using two simple keys. The first key is to improve your leg muscle strength. Try this. Sit in a firm chair that is not too low. Fold your arms across your chest. Keeping your arms folded, try standing. If you are unable to stand up, then unfold your arms and push up using your hands. Repeat this activity of standing up and sitting down 5 times in a row, 2 or 3 times a day if possible. The second key is to improve your balance. Stand next to your kitchen counter, holding on to the counter as needed, and lift one foot off the floor. Let go of the counter and see how long you can keep your foot in the air, up to 20 or 30 seconds. Practice 2 or 3 times a day with each leg. Using these two keys will help make you a winner in the gravity-defying competition!

Additional Parking + “Stepping Up” Your Exercise

Do you find it hard to find a parking place at the Seymour Center? Do you want to increase your exercise routine to include a few more steps? Here’s the perfect solution! Those who are able, just drive a little farther up the driveway past the Seymour Center, to the Southern Human Services Center’s parking lot. There you will generally find plenty of parking and a sidewalk so that you can walk safely. No longer will you have to park along the curb where you might be “surprised” to find your vehicle has gotten some dings and scratches while you were gone. There is also an exercise benefit to parking at the Southern Human Services Center. According to Medical Researchers, exercise sharply reduces the risk of diabetes, stroke, obesity, osteoporosis, anxiety, depression and high blood pressure. It can also reduce the

risks, or recurrence, of certain cancers as well as reducing fatigue, back pain, and improving brain function. One doctor stated in a News & Observer article that someone would have to take about 200 different medications to get the same positive effects that exercise has on the body. With all the positive benefits of exercise – decide to include a few more steps. (Did you know the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends people taking 10,000 steps per day which is approximately 1.5 mi? That’s a little more than 30 min of physical activity which is recommended to help maintain good health.) Why not choose to park a little farther away and save the Seymour Center spaces for those who really do need to park nearby. In addition, you’ll reap the benefits of a little more exercise!

Twice a year Darryl and Mary Freedman share a love of theatre and donate countless hours to the annual spring play festival and the fall musical variety show held at the Seymour Center. As director, Mary chooses the content, recruits performers and supervises rehearsals. Darryl, who describes himself as an observer of Mary’s activities, contributes his expertise to stage lighting and sound, and finally to making a video of the production. The Freedmans met when Mary was a senior in high school.” Of their 52 years of marriage, he says, “The first 50 years were the hardest. It became easier after that.” Mary made her singing debut at the age of 8 and her acting debut at age 12. “Theatre has been my hobby – never my career,” she recalls. After earning a master’s degree in public administration, she worked and became Director of Corporate Training for Durham Technical Community College. While working and raising three children she went to Community Theater to both perform and work behind the scenes. For years, she has acted in Durham Savoyard productions, most recently singing in the chorus of Princess Ida. Darryl’s background as an electrical engineer with IBM readily qualifies him for the technical side of productions. He is also president of VIVA Associates, which offers videography and video instruction services. Frequently, he volunteers his time to create and edit videos of community events. “Ten percent of the labor is videotaping,” he says. “The other 90 percent is editing the tape into a production that people will like to see.” He and Mary also run a small business using animation software developed by his son, and offer free animation services to schools within an hour’s drive of their home. When Darryl and Mary started coming to the Senior Center on Elliott Rd in 2002, it didn’t have a stage. The outlet for theatre buffs was the Village Revue, an acting troupe that entertained in nursing homes and assisted living facilities. With the new facilities at the Seymour Center, including a theater, Mary and Darryl formed the Prime Time Players with other volunteers. In May, the Players will present a program of 10 minute

plays written by local playwrights. Past plays have been well received, although Mary recalls one about which she had some doubts. “The main character visits a funeral home to plan his own funeral,” she recalled, “In one scene, he even gets into the coffin. We thought no one would like it, but they did!” In the fall, the group will present a Richard Rodgers’ two-act production. The first act will feature numbers from Rodgers & Hart productions while the second one will be songs and dances from Rodgers & Hammerstein musicals. Interested participants should contact Mary who is confident the show will live up to the high standards set by the 2010 Gershwin show, and the Cole Porter show in 2011. “They get better every year,” she says. Although performances have been in the Seymour Center’s auditorium, on March 23 at 2 pm, the Prime Time Players will bring their Cole Porter review to the Central Orange Senior Center, Hillsborough, for an afternoon of music and inspiration. How long will the Freedmans continue their central role with the Prime Time Players? “I’d be happy to have someone else direct so that I could go back on stage,” Mary says. Until then… ACTION! Volunteers 55+ (with the acting bug) are invited to join RSVP and the Prime Time Players for a little bit of Broadway. Contact RSVP (919) 968-2056 to explore this, or other rewarding volunteer opportunities.

Senior Net Volunteers Needed Opportunities for instructors and coaches are available for people with a basic working knowledge of computer software and hardware. (Coaching positions as assistant can be used to train those aspiring to be instructors). Prospective volunteers should also possess the desire and skills to share their knowledge with others in a “team based” and “user friendly” environment. Most courses are offered during the daytime. Additional offerings may take place in the evening and on weekends, if volunteers are available. Future offerings such as basic graphics, multi-media applications and genealogy will depend on the interests of the students and the skill sets of the volunteers. Contact Jim McGuire (jrmcgnc@earthlink.net) for more information, or to volunteer.

Make a Perfect Match The Blue Ribbon Mentor Advocate program gives adult volunteers a chance to help strengthen a child on the inside. Along with family participation, Mentors are the people who volunteer to make a difference in our students’ lives. We need one mentor for every student in the program. Students are waiting. We need you! Once you help identify the student’s potential, you would help that child find ways to tap into that potential for growth. You would also help your mentee succeed by becoming an advocate. A successful advocate makes sure that their mentee is receiving the services they need in school, and helps the student take advantage of other supports in the community. Visit our website to learn about children in need of a Mentor or read about success stories. If you strengthen a child on the inside, s/he will be strong on the outside. You will learn how to operate your camera, practice tips for taking good pictures, move around the Seymour Center to practice taking better pictures, and import your digital photos from your camera into the computer. You will learn basic and creative image composition using your camera. Then we will do some basic image editing, storing, e-mailing pictures and printing using just a small part of Picasa’s capabilities. (The full Picasa course, Organizing, Editing & Sharing Photos using Picasa, offered regularly, covers nearly all Picasa features.) Can you find the file? Is it still on your hard drive? Did it get erased unintentionally? Are you running out of space on your hard drive? Do you back up your email messages and addresses? What about your Internet favorites? And, is all this hard work protected from computer viruses and spyware? Prerequisites for this course: Student must have experience using Windows XP and have some understanding of the concepts of files and folders. Class Fee: $40.

motes food security for North Carolinians through outreach education about the North Carolina Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) Program. MIMB also dispels myths, demonstrates the benefit of applying for the FNS Program, and assists with the application process. Being food insecure is defined as having reduced quality, variety and desirability of food, as well as anxiety over food sufficiency. The FNS Program provides resources for eligible individuals to extend their food dollars in order to become more food secure. Currently only 2/3 of older adults who qualify for FNS/ SNAP benefits have applied. If you are among the 1/3 of eligible adults who have not applied but could benefit from this program, then the More In My Basket Program will provide you with the knowledge and information to access this very vital benefit. Up Close and Personal Creative Reuse Project! Do you want your special/memorable clothes or unwanted fabric/clothes to become a part of a permanent artwork for the Senior Center? Supported by the Town of Chapel Hill, the project, titled Up Close and Personal, will utilize re-purposed clothes and other objects to tell stories. Participants will be engaged in activities such as sewing, stitching, and screen printing to describe personal stories and memories through their clothing items. Together these will all contribute to a larger installation. In addition, a related fashion show will be a part of this exciting project to promote and celebrate creativity through innovative reuse of old garments. Create your own commemorative panels for your loved ones so their old clothes can become part of a permanent artwork for the Seymour Center. Tar Heel Depression Glass Club The Tar Heel Depression Glass Club was formed in the spring of 1984. This is a group of people who share a common interest in collecting and preserving the glassware of the American Depression era. Past programs have included talks on Heisey, Fostoria, and Cambridge; Jewel Tea, Mayfair, Fiesta, Hall teapots, Cloverleaf, and Fire-King jade-ite. Other times, however, the program will be about something related to the interest of a club member that is not specifically related to collectible glass or dinnerware. Some examples of these programs have been talks on cast iron, children’s toys from the 1940s and 1950s, glass paperweights, Guardian cookware, and antique purses. Among the activities enjoyed by members are monthly meetings (1st Monday of the month), social outings and trips to glass manufacturing areas of the country (West Virginia, Ohio, and Pennsylvania). This is an open group and new members are always welcome. For additional information contact the center or ncglassclub@hotmail.com.
