GENERAL INFO New Registration Process for Senior Center Classes/Programs Begins on Feb. 15 As we go to print the senior center staff are doing the final preparations for computerizing our class/ program registration process. We have all been through a very rigorous training process, but we know it is going to take us a little extra time as we start registering participants electronically. Please be patient with our staff and volunteers as we transition from paper registration to computer. It will help us greatly if you will come into the Center to pre-register for activities. For classes that require a payment, you will not be officially registered until we receive you payment. All participants will need to complete a Senior Center registration form. This completed form will be required for all classes and events. It may take us a little longer to assist you, but we will become more efficient as time goes on.

Orange County Dept on Aging Wins 2009 NC Award In January, Orange County’s Department on Aging won the North Carolina 2009 Ernest B Messer Award, along with the Shepherd’s Center of Greater Winston-Salem. “The Messer Award recognizes a community that has excelled in addressing the needs of its older citizens, and it is a privilege to present this award to your exemplary organization, the Orange County Department on Aging, and to formally recognize your many contributions to both Orange County and the aging community in North Carolina,” stated Dennis Streets, Director of the NC Division of Aging and Adult Services. According to Jerry Passmore, Department on Aging Director, “We are extremely pleased to be recognized as a leader in NC in addressing our older citizens’ needs. 30 years ago, we became the first NC public department on aging. Since that time, the department has worked to foster community partnerships and creative programming through an inter-disciplinary team of professionals that champion person-centered, holis-

tic care of our older citizens.” Some of the Department on Aging programs highlighted by the award are: (1) The dedicated County Aging Information Hotline staffed by professionals who, if needed, can follow up with a home visit or office appointment at a senior center; (2) Commitment to public awareness of aging services by the publication of an annual Community Resource Guide, a quarterly Senior Times newspaper, and producing an award winning weekly community access television show, “In Praise of Age.”; (3) A large, dedicated volunteer program providing critical services like tax assistance; (4) Strong public-private partnerships to expand senior programming and provide financial support; and (5) An efficient transportation division transporting older adults to necessary services and enriching opportunities.

In addition, Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plans (PDPs are private companies); supplemental insurance options, as well as Medicare Advantage plans (Medicare Part C) will be reviewed. People on limited incomes may qualify for help paying for all or part of their Medicare Part B and Part D premiums and co-pays. Information on all these programs will be given at the seminar. Come and learn how to select what health insurance is best for you, and when you must enroll to avoid having a penalty! People turning 65 within the next six months are especially encouraged attend. If you –Venture Into A VARIETY OF VIEWS – have toany questions, please call 968-2087.

In addition, the Messer Award recognizes Orange County’s two senior centers operated by the Department on Aging, with their strong emphasis on wellness for seniors across the continuum. This includes the adult day health program located in the Central Orange Senior Center. “While the Messer Award points out the creative things we are currently doing to provide essential services, it also challenges Orange County to be even more effective and efficient in the future, as we prepare to serve an older population, the fastest growing segment of our population, that will double in the next fifteen years,” said Jerry Passmore. “Recent Orange County demographic projections predict that by 2029 there will be over 41,000 seniors aged 60+ compared to 28,000 children under the age of 17. “ A formal award presentation by the State Director of NC’s Division of Aging and Adult Services is planned for an upcoming County Board of Commissioners’ meeting.

Older Americans are living longer and are more active than ever before. With the aging of the baby boomers, America’s senior population is expected to reach 71.5 million by 2030. It will have lots of vendors, information resourcliving facilities and home care agencies, no adult day care programs, and the Meals on Wheels programs were just starting. Celebration of the Dept on Aging’s 30th Anniversary

On October 1, 1980 Orange County’s Board of Commissioners created, by county ordinance, North Carolina’s first public department on aging, and its citizens’ advisory board. In 2010 the department’s staff, board members and volunteers will plan special events to celebrate its 30 years of creativity and innovation in providing senior services and programming. Through the years, Orange County’s senior centers have championed a unique person-centered, holistic service approach. The department developed models of community based care, and stressed the importance of publicprivate partnerships and volunteerism to creatively respond to older adults’ needs. If you have any information or memorabilia about the Department on Aging that you’d like to share, or if you’re interested in helping with the celebration events, which begin in May, please contact Jerry Passmore, Department Director at 245-2020.

Every Boy’s Dream

RSVP 55+ Volunteer Viewpoint

WELLNESS

by Annette Jurgelski RSVP Volunteer Little boys may dream about their future and say, “When I grow up, I’m going to be a cowboy.” For most, it doesn’t become a reality. However, one boy had the next best thing happen by being the son of a cowboy. Jon Livers, former insurance executive turned RSVP volunteer, grew up on a midWest farm raising horses and cows. He comes from a family of pioneers traced to the early 1700s. Now, Jon shares the flavors of his varied cultural experiences as a volunteer. Every Tuesday morning, a classroom at the Seymour Center resounds with the hum of multi-accented conversation. In the Orange County Literacy Council’s English Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) class, everyone is speaking English, but their pronunciations vary, and Jon is in the middle of it all. Jon facilitates this present-day tower of Babel by giving non-English speakers an opportunity to improve their conversational skills. Participants come from a variety of countries, including Russia, Korea, Japan, China, Columbia and Persia, and range from visiting scholars to newly settled refugees. “Many have studied English in their home countries and may know more English grammar than the average American,” Jon says. “In this case, we work on pronunciation and putting things in the right syntax. It’s difficult to understand how the same English word can have different meanings. For example, we take a trip (vacation) and then we trip and fall.” Like many others, the

Livers chose Chapel Hill for their retirement home. After moving from North Dakota in 2003, Jon followed the example of his wife, a “Volunteer of the Year” award winner for her work with UNC Hospice. Initially, Jon volunteered with the Orange County Literacy Council, where he was trained to tutor students working for their GED. Then he was offered the opportunity to assist in the conversation lab, which quickly became the focus of his volunteering. Under Jon’s tutelage, lab activities have become as varied as its participants. Groups of two or three meet with an English-speaking volunteer to discuss newspaper articles or simply share life experiences. The entire group takes field trips to local destinations such as the Oishii Sushi restaurant, Allen & Son BBQ and Weaver Street Market. Potlucks provide a setting for participants to introduce their native cuisines and share perceptions of our country. This culture sharing increases when the attendees wear native costumes and describe their holidays. Like many volunteers, Jon finds that he’s a recipient as well as a giver. Working with the internationals in the conversation lab has given Jon a broader outlook on life. “We learn from them; they learn from us,” Jon says. “The experience revitalizes you and restores your faith in the future of the human race.” Since as many as 20 internationals may attend the conversation lab in one session, new volunteers are always welcome. If you are interested in sharing the culture of another country and helping others communicate, call the RSVP Volunteer Program at 968-2056 or visit the OC Literacy Council at www.

RSVP Volunteer Jon Livers occasionally adds a cowboy twist to leading an ESOL class (English Speakers of Other Languages). Stop by the class and you may catch Jon strumming a campfire tune in full cowboy attire, hat to boot. The volunteers and students attending the class above studied newspaper clippings and enjoy tasting exotic fruits.

The Senior Wellness Clinic at the Seymour Center, Chapel Hill

Clinic’s Purpose: The purpose of this multidisciplinary clinic is to enable seniors to live independently in the community by focusing screening and treatment on mood, memory, mobility, and falls prevention. What will a visit to the clinic include? • Multidisciplinary assessments by geriatrician – a doctor specializing in care for people over 60 yrs old, occupational therapist, pharmacist, physcial therapist, and social worker • Clients can expect to

spend an hour or so visiting with the team. • We work together to create individual recommendations for medical care, exercise, or environmental risks. Also, we might suggest further testing and/or individual and family counseling. What if a person already has a doctor? Our team will not replace a person’s regular doctor. We support the care of primary physicians by offering this specialty screening clinic and maintaining open lines of communication with your doctor.

How do I make an appointment? The clinic is held Thursdays at 8:30 am to 12 noon at the Seymour Center on 2551 Homestead Road in Chapel Hill, NC. Please call Debbie Cook at University Physical Therapy at 7326600 to schedule an appointment. Please, do not call the Seymour Center to schedule appointments. This clinic is offered through a partnership between the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine and the Orange County Department on Aging.

Traditional Japanese Embroidery is 1600 years old and only came to this country in 1985. People learn this specialized art by going through 1-10 phases, which can take years to complete. The embroidery is done with silk and metal threads on silk fabric. The silk filaments come directly from the cocoon. Threads are made directly from the filaments depending on the thickness or thinness needed. In various pieces, some superimposed embroidery is used (embroidery over embroidery). Motifs are usually flowers, birds and sometimes human figures. Instructor: Carl Newman, certified instructor by Kurenai Kai in Atlanta, Ga. He teaches across the US and is a graduate of the University of TN with a degree in textile arts. Fee: $75, plus materials fee per session. Wed, Apr 21

Come and experience writing and story-telling fun through a total language/experience emergence. To heighten awareness (mental and sensory) and pep us up, we start with outdoor strolls, and observing nature. These fun-filled activities stimulate all language processes which we’ll turn into creative writings every time, even for beginners. Join us as we become evermore aware of our deeper, more harmonious and joyful selves - then write. You speak it; I record and write it up (for review); and together we edit until you’re satisfied. Each of you will end up with enhanced storytelling and writing skills, and your own oral and written version to share with friends and loved ones -
