GENERAL INFO New Registration Process for Senior Center Classes/Programs Just a reminder that we are using a new computerized registration system, so it may take us a little longer to get you registered. Please be patient with our staff and volunteers as we transition from paper registration to computer. It will help us greatly if you will come into the Center to preregister for activities. For classes that require a payment, you will not be officially registered until we receive your payment. All participants will need to complete a Senior Center registration form. Dept on Aging Wins Best Practice Award

Census 2010 – Take 10 Challenge! 2010 US Census forms were sent out in March. It will document the changes in our nation since the last decennial census in 2000. Because census data affect how more than $400 billion in federal funding is distributed to tribal, state and local governments, the census is very important for us as a community. Census data help guide local planning decisions, including where to provide additional social services, establish senior centers, and build new roads, hospitals and schools. Without a complete census count, funding for vital community services important to many older persons and retirees may not be adequate. During Census 2000, the mail participation rate for Orange County was 70 percent. Since census workers must visit households that do not return forms by mail, each mail response saves approximately $60-$70. We are issuing a challenge to our senior population to help increase the County’s overall response rate by taking 10-minutes to complete the form and return it in the postage-paid return envelope. This is something everyone can do to help the government save money, and get an accurate Census at the same time. During May-July, census takers must follow up door-to-door with any households that did not return forms by mail. If your household has already returned its form, thank you. Visit www.co.orange.nc.us/planning/census2010.asp to learn more about the Census in Orange County.

Where can a person over 65 receive an array of inter-related medical, physical, cognitive, emotional, and social interventions to maintain or enhance function under one easily accessible and stigma-free setting? If you live in Orange County, the answer is the senior centers. On April 9, 2009, the Southern Gerontological Society acknowledged the excellence of Orange County Department on Aging by giving it the “Best Practices Award” at their annual conference. The award was accepted, on behalf of Jerry Passmore and the Department on Aging, by staff members: Kate Barrett, MSW, LCSW; Vibeke Talley, OTR/L; and Jan Gerard, MSW, LCSW, who had given a symposium at the conference, along with UNC faculty member, Carol Guiliani, PT, PhD, and Racquel Daley-Placide, MD. The award recognized the unique partnership between UNC-Chapel Hill and the Department on Aging, especially in the creation of cost-effective and therapeutically effective services for older adults trying to remain independent. These “best practices” include the: Mood, Memory, and Mobility Clinic; functional fitness screenings; physical therapy at the senior centers; balance classes; geriatric mental health counseling; caregiver counseling; chronic disease self-management; and preventive home visits conducted by an occupational therapist. These evidence-based programs empower seniors, recognize the relationship between mind and body, and provide services in a trusted, community based setting. For more information on any of these programs, please call the Aging Information and Consultation Line at 968-2087.

17th Annual National Senior Health & Fitness Day: Wednesday, May 26, 2010 On Wednesday, May 26, 2010, an estimated 100,000 older adults will participate in local fitness activities throughout the country as part of the 17th annual National Senior Health & Fitness Day® (NSHFD), the nation’s largest health promotion event for older adults. Organized as a public/private good health partnership by the Mature Market Resource Center (MMRC), Senior Health & Fitness Day will offer fitness activities for older adults at more than 1,000 locations including hospitals, park and recreation departments, senior centers, health clubs, retirement communities, houses of worship, health departments and other community locations. The event is always held on the last Wednesday in May as part of Older Americans Month activities. This year’s theme is: Get Going...Get Fit...Start Today. Programs will range from small group exercise demonstrations in community senior centers to walking tours and health fairs. Most programs include an exercise or physical activity component, as well as information about senior subjects. In Orange County, we will offer all fee-based exercise classes for FREE on this day and Thursday, May 27, to encourage everyone to exercise. Central Orange SC (2WE9 )

Technology limits wandering, saves lives Individuals with Alzheimer’s Disease, other forms of dementia, Down’s Syndrome, or Autism can now be located quickly if they wander away from home. Project Lifesaver, a partnership among local police and sheriff departments uses radio technology in small bracelets on the wrist or ankle that can be worn 24 hours a day – even in the shower. Nationally, search times for people who have wandered have been reduced from days to under 30 minutes. In addition, it’ll stimulate business and create awareness for our local Orange County farmers’ markets.” According to Passmore, “We see this project as part of the Department on Aging’s food service innovation.” For more information, contact your local senior center.

Jerry Passmore, Orange County Department on Aging’s “Pioneer in Aging” Retires After over 30 years as an Orange County employee, Jerry Passmore is retiring as the Director of the Department on Aging as of July 1, 2010 when he’ll become a volunteer advocate for senior issues. Initially, Jerry was the Executive Director of the Orange County Council on Aging. Then, in September 1980, the Orange County commissioners established by county ordinance the first public department on aging, and Advisory Board on Aging in North Carolina, with Jerry as its director. Throughout his 30 years, Orange County Department on Aging has been a leader not only within the state, but also outside of it – including being a model for organizations in other countries. The Department focuses on the whole person with multiple issues that change over one’s lifespan. It has won many awards, including the National Association of Counties, two state Division of Aging and Adult Services’ Ernest B. Messer awards for outstanding programs in aging services in 2009 and 2004, and in April 2010, it received the Southern Gerontology Society’s 2010 Best Practices in Aging award covering the southeastern United States. In addition, its Seniors’ Health Insurance and Information Program (SHIIP) has won numerous awards, as have individual staff members, for their outstanding qualify of service to older adults. Since its establishment, the Department has involved the entire community in master aging planning and initiating services with older adults helping other older adults. This fosters community partnerships with organizations and towns, as well as creating an interdis-

ciplinary team of professionals who champion person-centered, holistic care of our older residents. Jerry stated that, “I leave County government with a strong, highly visible, wellrespected Department, a dedicated Advisory Board on Aging, two supportive non-profit Friends of the Senior Centers, two state-of-the art continuing care senior centers, and an excellent staff. They are all in positions to meet the challenge of the next 20 years when Orange County’s older population will double. This translates to one out of every four residents age 60+, which is estimated to be over 41,000 people.” He also stated that “We will live longer than previous generations, economic and political power will shift from young to old and one of our most important personal decisions will be how to spend our extra years of life.” “I take this opportunity to thank the County Commissioners, County Manager’s Office, county departments, various advisory board members, and especially, the Department on Aging staff, who have shared

the vision and wishes of helping older residents to age well and to age-in-place as long as possible.” He continued by saying, “ I am especially proud of all the Department on Aging staff, including OPT (Orange Public Transportation), many of whom have been with me for over 20 years, for their commitment, creativity and passion to making a difference every day in the lives of older adults. They are consummate professionals, leaders in their own right, and I am confident they will carry on the mission and excellence in service of the Department on Aging.” He concluded with, “The goal of the Department on Aging will always be to help older adults ‘die young, but as late as possible!’ Regardless of chronological age, we are to provide hope, and to offer opportunities and assistance with core services to maintain a youthful spirit to the very end of life.” Jerry, from all of us, thank you for your wonderful visions and inspirations which resulted in so many outstanding services for older Orange County adults and the improvement of their quality of life, and that of all those who care about them. We will miss you, but know that you’ll continue to impact the lives of seniors in your new roll as a volunteer advocate. You have helped so many others at this stage of life, now you can enjoy your own! There is a framed quotation in Jerry’s office from Ralph Waldo Emerson: “Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.” Jerry, thanks for being a “Pioneer in Aging” by leaving a trail and encouraging us to create our own paths.

Exercise Classes Feel the “Squeeze” of Challenging Economic Times… As the economy puts a squeeze on our personal budgets, it’s also putting one on Orange County – including the Wellness Program, and its exercise classes. Although they’ve been offered for many years without a fee, they are feeling the budget constraints, and now need some help to keep “going.” Outside sources have funded several of the classes for years, but they are drying up and ceasing to exist. Unfortunately, beginning in June, we must ask ALL NON-FEE class participants to make a donation to offset the cost of the instructors. The suggested donation per class is $1. Thank you for your understanding of this situation, and your help to ensure that we can continue to offer our wonderful classes. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Myra Austin, wellness coordinator, at 968-2073.

Can You Help Us Be “Detectives”?

SENIOR TIMES NEWS

We need your help, and hope that you can be a “detective” to help solve some lovely “mysteries”. Edie Cohn is an artist who has been doing portraits in this area for the last 30 years. In the early 1980s she was the moderator for life drawing classes at the Carrboro ArtsCenter when it was at Carr Mill Mall. She often invited senior citizens from the Meet Your Neighbor Club (which was also at Carr Mill Mall), to pose for her class instead of hiring models. Over the course of three to four years she did over 80 drawings, and in 1985 Edie had a solo exhibit titled “Strength of Character” at the ArtsCenter. Blue Greenberg, an art critic for the

Durham Morning Herald, wrote this about the show, “There are still people today who do not want their pictures made for fear of being robbed of their souls. Most of us laugh at such a notion, yet when an artist comes along who paints portraits so that we see as much of the inner person as the outer, we wonder whether those superstitions may not have a basis in fact. Edith Cohn is such a painter.” Now, 25 to 30 years later (here’s the “mystery” part), she wants to find homes for all of the portraits that she’s kept safe all these years. Many of them are identified and we’d like to find either the people, or their families. Others need to be identi-

Smokey Joe’s Café at the Central Orange Senior Center

The Orange County Department on Aging, in cooperation with The Mebane Acting Company, Inc., is proud to present Smokey Joe’s Cafe on May 22, at 7 pm at the Central Orange Senior Center. Smokey Joe’s Café opened on Broadway in 1995. It ran for five years with over 2,000 shows. It was nominated for seven Tony awards and won a Grammy for best original cast album. The revue includes forty of Leiber and Stoller’s favorites and is the longest-running musical revue on Broadway. Some of the music featured in the musical are “Stand by Me,” “There Goes My Baby,” “Yakety Yak,” “Charlie Bown,” “Ruby Baby,” and “Hound Dog,” among many others. The Mebane Acting Company, Inc., is a volunteer non-profit community theatre company that originated in 2005. Wayne Leonard directs the show, and Jeff Overstreet is the music director. Shauna DeFord choreographs the show, and Ross Hurteau serves as the stage manager. Admission is $10 at the door. For more information, visit www. mebaneactingcompany.com or call 304-4008.

Reduction in Orange County Services for 2010-11 The current economic climate with projected decreasing revenues has forced Orange County’s Government to reduce the County budget for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2010. All county departments including the Department on Aging and Transportation, have been requested by the County Manager to trim 15% of local dollar support in order to deal with this budget crisis. Proposed cuts by staff include: reduced evening hours at both the Seymour Center and Central Orange Senior Center, replace the annual RSVP Recognition luncheon with a less expense event, less funds for in-home services, less funds for senior center program supplies, and reduction in administrative supplies, printing, and mileage. Any vacant positions will not be filled. The Senior Times will no longer be mailed to individual homes, but distributed only as a Chapel Hill Herald insert or picked up at the centers. Public Hearings will be held on May 20 and 25 to receive citizen comments on the proposed Orange County budget for Fiscal Year 2010-11. fied. These lovely drawings will be at the Seymour Center so that people can look at them, and, hopefully, help us make sure that each one is identified. All of the drawings will be part of the Orange County Dept on Aging’s 30th Anniversary celebration in Oct when they will be displayed at the Seymour Center from Mon, Oct 4 through Thurs, Dec 2. After the show, the models, or their family members, may take the drawings home (there may be a nominal charge). For more information on this marvelous opportunity, call Janice Tyler at 968-2071 or email her at jtyler@ co.orange.nc.us. The artist, Edie Cohn, can be reached at 451-1122 or edie.cohn@gmail.com .

Smiling Ambassadors

RSVP 55+ Volunteer Viewpoint

By Annette Jurgelski, RSVP Volunteer

Of the many friendly faces at the Central Orange Senior Center in Hillsborough, two stand out for the warmth of their smiles and the regularity of their greetings. Hardly a day goes by that RSVP Volunteers Haryo and Gloria Marsosudiro cannot be found at the Center. Between exercise classes and other commitments, the couple volunteers to serve lunch, give tours to newcomers and generally radiates good cheer to everyone who comes in range. Terry Colville, the Senior Center Operations and Program Manager, calls them the “senior center’s ambassadors.” Along with plates of food, Gloria offers conversation. “People don’t have to be lonely, they just need someone to talk to,” she says. Haryo, who collects lunch tickets, is similarly ready for friendly exchanges. He also donates his time to leading a karaoke group on Wednesday mornings and to serving on the Friends of Central Orange Senior Center, as well as the Board of the Orange County Department on Aging. Gloria describes their lifestyle this way: “We’re very active and enjoy people. It’s especially nice to serve—and be—old folks like us.” The Marsosudiros’ melodious, slightly accented speech is a clue to their multicultural background. Haryo came to this country from Indonesia in 1956 to study mechanical engineering at the University of Kentucky. Gloria, who is from the Philippines, was already at the University pursuing a master’s degree in school counseling. The two met, started dating, and, as Gloria puts it, “He kept running after me, until I caught him.” They will soon celebrate their 44th anniversary. Before their marriage, both had planned to return to their native countries. However, after the wedding, they agreed to remain in the United States. Professional opportunities brought them to Asheville in 1970, and then to Durham in 1985. Retirement in 2004 returned them to this area, to be near their son, Philindo, who is a loyal Durhamite. Seeking the more leisurely pace of small town living, they bought a home in Hillsborough. Since moving to the Triangle, they have also become avid fans of ACC basketball. “We really are North Carolinians,” they say now. “We hope to live here forever.” The Marsosudiros might well live a long time. Their daily routine encompasses many of the recommended ingredients for healthy aging and longevity. They exercise five days a week at the Central Orange Senior Center and at the adjoining Sportsplex, maintain a social schedule that includes a lunch bunch and a game group, and volunteer regularly at their church and almost daily at the Senior Center. Studies show that community service volunteers live longer lives. Become a statistic, and join the Marsosudiros as RSVP Volunteers. RSVP can help you find your volunteer niche. Call the RSVP Volunteer Program at 968-2056.

It starts with a warm welcome and within minutes you’ve got a friend at the Central Orange Senior Center. You have just met Gloria and Haryo Marsosudiro, the senior center ambassadors. Japanese Embroidery

Open Studio for Pottery Students

Traditional Japanese Embroidery is 1600 years old and only came to this country in 1985. People learn this specialized art by going through 1-10 phases, which can take years to complete. The embroidery is done with silk and metal threads on silk fabric. The silk filaments come directly from the cocoon. Threads are made directly from the filaments depending on the thickness or thinness needed. In various pieces, some superimposed embroidery is used (embroidery over embroidery). Motifs are usually flowers, birds and sometimes human figures. Instructor: Carl Newman, certified instructor by Kurenai Kai in

Each of you will end up with enhanced story-telling and writing skills, and your own oral and written version to share with friends and loved ones - a legacy. You Make Me Feel So Young, DVD Project directed by Steve Toll

America has a rich musical history and as we grow and develop throughout our lives music marks our major and minor moments. This creates our individual music history and tells the story of our lives through the songs we love. Our program will highlight individuals in our senior community as they tell their stories and the group performs the songs. The individual stories will be placed into the larger context of American history of the last 100 years with the aid of narration and images as the songs are performed by the group. Steve Toll will act as director of the program and provide all of the musical accompaniment, arranging, vocal coaching and audio production. The entire process including participant interviews, rehearsals and the performance will be captured on video and edited to create a DVD to promote the Seymour Center. Come to the first interest meeting on Friday, June 11th to get a better understanding of this excellent project. Seymour Center (1G19) Fri, Jun 11, Jul 9, Aug 13 10 am-12 noon 75 Plus Club
