Welcome to the fall issue of the Senior Times. In September we are joining in the celebration of National Senior Center Month. This year’s theme is “It happens at My Senior Center. My Life. My Time. My Way.” Wow, what a theme! The new generation of older adults are redefining retirement and it shows with this national theme. We hope that you take the time to visit Orange County’s Senior Centers and find your way to a healthy, happy and involved life. As you plan for yourself we hope that you will consider helping us plan for the future of older adults in Orange County. We are launching the 2012-16 Master Aging Plan process with a Community Kick-off event on Oct.5 (1-5 pm) at the Seymour Center. I am looking forward to seeing you there and I hope that you will consider joining a work group to assist in developing the new MAP. This is your opportunity to assist in creating a plan for the future that will make a tremendous difference in the quality of life for Orange County seniors and their families. If you have any questions about the process please feel free to give me a call. I hope that you enjoy this issue of Senior Times. It is packed with many new activities and events, as well as the announcement of several new services in our department.

Help Plan the Future for Orange County’s Seniors! 2012-16 MAP Community Kick-off Event – Oct. 5 We are looking forward to making the services and programs for seniors and their families even better in the next five years - beginning in 2012. Orange County continues to be a leader in the aging field and we want to continue, but we need your help! To get people’s input for the Master Aging Plan (MAP) for 2012 – 2016, focus groups were held throughout the county, and Janice Tyler, director of the Orange County Department on Aging, met with all the county department directors. In addition, over 200 residents completed our online survey. If you haven’t completed one yet, please go to http://www.surveymonkey. com/s/perceptionsofaging as your opinion is important. The online survey will close on Oct. 10. It will become part of the information used to help make Orange County an even better place to age in the future. On Oct 5 (1 – 5 pm) the Seymour Center will host an important MAP Community Meeting. Come and learn the results of the focus groups, surveys, and interviews. YOU ARE NEEDED TO HELP PRIORIZE THE NEEDS – WHICH WILL MAKE A TREMENDOUS DIFFERENCE IN PEOPLE’S LIVES as we plan for 2012 - 2016! The number of seniors in Orange County continues to increase every day – especially as the Baby Boomers age. At the meeting on Oct 5, work groups will emerge to identify recommendations for MAP 2012 – 2016. YOU ARE NEEDED

for both your thoughts about the present and ideas about the future – and to be part of a work group that will meet periodically from Nov – Feb. The work groups’ recommendations will be presented to the county commissioners in May 2012. This will mark the beginning of the recommendations becoming a reality. Remember, we now have two beautiful senior centers which came to fruition due to a previous MAP. Who knows what will result from this one?! We are also pleased to announce that the Master Aging Plan process was selected as one of the UNC School of Public Health – Health Behavior Health Education program’s Capstone projects. As a result, we will have 6 graduate students, and two faculty members, assisting with the subcommittee work, doing research, assisting with the public comment process, as well as working to develop the final written plan. For more information about how you can get involved in this process, contact Janice Tyler, director, Orange County Department on Aging at 968-2071 or jtyler@co.orange. nc.us. Or better yet, call the Seymour Center, 968-2070, to let us know that you will be attending the Kick-off event on Oct. 5. This opportunity doesn’t come very often. Don’t miss it!

Parenting A Second Time Around (PASTA) Training Are you a grandparent or caregiver for a related child? If so, the Parenting the Second Time Around or PASTA Program may be for you. This educational program will be facilitated by Deborah Taylor, Family and Consumer Sciences Extension Agent - Orange County Center of NC Cooperative Extension; will provide you with helpful support, insight, and resources in this very important parenting role. Grandparents and other relatives who are parenting “for the second time around” may well be the unsung heroes of the 21st century! Without you, many children whose parents are unwilling or unable to care for them would be forced to live apart from families, or in the foster care system. The challenges for caregivers in this situation can be almost overwhelming because (1) few older adults plan to be caring for children, (2) you may be experiencing some of the more difficult aspects of growing older, (3) you may be experiencing shortages of time, money, and declining health, and (4) you may be unfamiliar with existing community resources. If you find yourself in this situation, the PASTA Program may be beneficial to you. The following sessions will be offered over an 8-week period on Thursdays – 10 am – 12 noon at the Central Orange Senior Center Sept 1 - It Wasn’t Supposed to Be Like This Participants will identify and reflect on ambivalent feelings about changing roles and identify helpful community resources. Sept 8 - Getting to Know You Child development and individual differences in children.

Sept 15 - Rebuilding A Family Adult/child interactions, grief and loss, relating to your adult child, and solution-focused problem solving. Sept 22 - Discipline is Not a Dirty Word, But It May Look Different Today Topics will include characteristics of effective discipline, establishing a discipline style, and addressing high-risk behaviors. Sept 29 - Legal Concerns of Relatives Raising Children Legal issues including custody, visitation, and child support. Oct 6 - Standing Up for Grandparents’/Grandchildren’s Rights Advocacy, negotiating systems, and community programs. Oct 13 - Grandparents and Teens Living Together Key points in adolescent development and realistic expectations for behavior. Oct 27 - Living with Teens Can Be Challenging Indicators of high-risk behavior and strategies/ resources to help. **It will be beneficial to those who enroll to attend all eight sessions. Take advantage of this excellent opportunity to be more effective in your kinship caregiver role. If you have questions regarding the workshop content, please contact Deborah Taylor at 2452055 or via e-mail at deborah_taylor@ncsu.edu. To register, contact the Central Orange Senior Center at 245-2015. The registration deadline is Thurs, Aug 25. Fee: FREE (243018-01)

What will a visit to the clinic include? ◆ Multidisciplinary assessments ◆ Clients can expect to spend an hour or so visiting with the team. ◆ We work together to create individual recommendations for medical care, exercise, or environmental risks. Also, we might suggest further testing and/or individual and family counseling. ◆ We will schedule a second visit to follow-up on our recommendations. ◆ The team’s findings will be shared with the client’s primary care doctor. What if a person already has a doctor? Our team will not replace a person’s regular doctor. We plan to support the care of primary physicians by offering this specialty screening clinic and maintaining open lines of communication with your doctor. How do I make an appointment? The clinic is held Thursdays from 8:30 am to 12 noon at the Seymour Center on 2551 Homestead Road in Chapel Hill, NC. Please call Debbie Cook at University Physical Therapy at 732-6600 to schedule an appointment. Do not call the Seymour Center to schedule appointments. Seniors Gain Physical and Mental Benefits from Exercise. So - Get Moving!

Keep Active! Like virtue, exercise is its own reward. It can help you feel as strong as you did when you were an invincible teenager. Both strength training and aerobic exercise are the cornerstones of most senior fitness programs. They get oxygen into your system – including your lungs and heart. Walking, bicycling, swimming, jogging, dancing, or playing tennis can go a long way toward maintaining your independence.

Endurance Exercises - Regular workouts not only strengthen the heart muscle but also reduce blood pressure, lower cholesterol and help control blood sugar. Two recent studies reported that three hours of brisk walking every week cut the risk of heart disease in seniors by as much as 40%.

Bad News! Many so-called diseases of aging are really diseases of inactivity and can be modified by exercise. Sometimes I hear older adults say, “What do you expect, I am 75 years old”. My mother tells me not to expect too much of her, she is 91. Yes, many seniors are

living well into their 90s - and older, and those who age well (physically and mentally) are most often those who stay active. Exercise Keeps Your Brain Sharp! If you are worried about memory loss, not being as sharp as you used to be, or are having problems concentrating - put down the crossword puzzle and get moving! Research shows that exercise not only keeps your muscles strong, it can keep your brain sharp, too. Physical fitness is associated with better brain function and exercise. Physical activity can actually improve brain function as much, or more, than doing puzzles and brain games. Can Exercise Improve Your Mood? Yes indeed! Almost any exercise such as a regular walk around the block, exercise class, or lifting weights can raise your selfesteem; reduce stress, ease anxiety, and even help decrease symptoms of depression. Researchers at Duke University found that 16 weeks of

aerobic exercise may be as effective helping depression as 16-weeks of antidepressant drugs in severely depressed men and women over 50. What Exercise Should I Choose? If you need some guidance because of a medical condition, physical therapists are available for individual consultations at both senior centers. Most importantly, find something you enjoy and stick with it. Exercising should not be a chore! You can do your own thing or join a class. Fortunately, there are many exercise choices - especially in Orange County. They all seem to work if you do them regularly. So, before you forget - get moving! By: Carol Giuliani, PT, PhD, Professor of Physical Therapy, UNC Chapel Hill School of Medicine-Allied Health Program - Physical Therapy Division

Concerned About Your Memory? Come to the Seymour Center on Tues., Nov. 15, National Memory Screening Day for a FREE confidential Memory Screen for individuals concerned about memory loss. The objective for the event is early detection and intervention. Memory screenings are important; they can be a significant first step toward finding out if a person may have a memory problem. A screening is not used to diagnose any particular illness and does not replace consultation with a qualified physician or other healthcare professional. It can check a person’s memory and other thinking skills. A screening can indicate if someone might benefit from a more complete medical visit. It is very important to identify the cause of any memory loss. That is why a person should follow up for a complete checkup with a qualified healthcare professional. Some memory problems can be readily treated, such as those caused by vitamin deficiencies or thyroid problems. Other memory problems might result from causes that are not currently reversible such as Alzheimer’s disease or other dementias. In general, the earlier the diagnosis, the easier it is to treat one of these conditions. Screenings will be offered in individual appointments from 10 am – 4 pm by calling 968-2070.

The Bottom Line - Uncle Sam Needs YOU! Yes - YOU! The story behind the story of the Orange County RSVP Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) lies in the abilities of approximately 110 volunteers. These IRS trained and certified community volunteers prepare over 2,000 tax returns for eligible clients at sites in Orange and Chatham Counties, which annually bring in tax refunds and credits totaling over $2 million. If not for the free VITA tax preparation service, many of these taxpayers may not have filed returns at all. In fact, it is sometimes necessary for VITA volunteers to prepare one or more prior year returns for a client. The bottom line of the story is that additional volunteers are needed each year to assist with volunteer recruitment and training, writing grants, tax preparation and processing, program coordination, site support, office assistance or to make client appointments. Contact RSVP to join our VITA team at 968-2054. Years ago, the IRS Director reported during an interview for a magazine that millions of taxpayers overpay their taxes every year by overlooking just one small item. VITA volunteer Jill Hallenbeck (tax preparer, return reviewer and program leader) has served with RSVP-VITA since the 2003 tax season. She tells a story that paints a picture of one of the classic types of VITA clients we serve: “One of my VITA clients is a single parent with low-income employment who bought a small house last year. She has a young son and custody of her 14-year-old twin brothers. With her withholding and the four tax credits to which she was entitled, her IRS refund totaled almost $16,000. Without our help and diligence, this young woman may have had to pay a large amount to get her taxes done, or tried to do them herself and might not have gotten all the credits.” Jill sums it up well with, “This is why I do VITA.” This is why so many of the 110 volunteers in the program return year after year and with each year’s growth, new volunteers are always needed. Over the seven-month RSVP-VITA “tax season,” volunteer service hours typically top 8,000. VITA volunteers recruited by Orange County RSVP 55+ Volunteer Program come from backgrounds as varied as college professors, international diplomats, accountants, tax professionals, students, or those who have done their own taxes for many years and love to crunch numbers. All VITA services (preparation of federal, state and special schedules) are free for eligible clients of any age. All returns are computerized and most are electronically filed. For information about becoming a VITA volunteer (orientation and training provided), call Kathy Porter, at 968-2054.

National Falls Prevention Awareness Day is observed the first day of fall to promote and increase public awareness about how to prevent and reduce falls among older adults. Falls Prevention Awareness Day is September 23, 2011. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), falls are the leading cause of injury deaths among adults age 65 and older. One in three adults age 65 and older falls each year. It is estimated that approximately 17 percent of older North Carolinians experienced a fall in the past three months, with one-third of those falls resulting in an injury. The good news is that most falls are preventable. Recommendations for preventing falls among older adults include encouraging them to exercise regularly, have their medications reviewed, get their vision checked, reduce hazards in their homes that can lead to falls, and have a balance screening. Balance Screening will be provided on Friday, September 23, National Fall Prevention Day at the Central Orange Senior Center, Hillsborough. Call the Center at 245-2015 for an appointment or stop by that day 9 am – 4 pm for a FREE balance screening and consultation with a physical therapist.

Art for Healing Art is for everyone. The core of our being holds a limitless well of joy, creativity and healing. We intuitively turn to art for inspiration and renewal. Art can heal the soul, or soothe pain. Often people rely on art to process an experience, or help envision desired life changes. Color itself has healing properties. Creating art in silence or with music can add peacefulness. Other tools we use are: active imagination, poetry, and gentle movement. You may want to work with dreams, emotions or thoughts. A Bowl and a Roll Spanky’s Gang is back, only this time “girls” are welcome. Do you enjoy a really good soup and homemade rolls? If so, this is the place for you - right here at the senior center every 2nd and 4th Thurs beginning in Sept. Back in the 1950’s Spanky’s dad had a small seashore restaurant. When the workmen walked through the door they would holler, “Hey Joe, a bowl and a roll”. For just 40¢ he would serve a hearty bowl of

Senior Times soup (25¢) and a roll (10¢) and that left a 5¢ tip for the waitress! So here’s the deal, Spanky will make the soup (and demonstrate his process) and he needs volunteers to bake the rolls (your recipe). In celebration of Senior Center Month (Sept), we are rolling back the price to 40¢ for the months of September and October. What a deal! Please RSVP at least one week before each event. That, combined with bills from doctors, hospitals, car repairs, etc could add up quickly! This doesn’t even take into account what it would do to your “quality of life”. Learn what you can do to reduce your chances for an accident by attending AARP’s class on Defensive Driving. Check with your insurance company to find out if you will be eligible for a discount after completing the course. Please make checks payable to AARP.
