Senior Times

As we go to print we are ending the first year implementation of the 2012-17 Master Aging Plan and your Department on Aging has been a busy place this year. I would like to thank everyone, including the staff, board, volunteers and community partners who have worked to make so many of our goals a reality this year. Of the 41 strategies identified for the first year, we have initiated 32 of them with no additional funding or staff. Some of the accomplishments include expanded work with the Asian g n i g community and caregivers; development of a new partnership A ter between EMS for a falls prevention/intervention program; and Mas pdate U expansion of low-cost mental health counseling at the Senior n a l P Centers; creation of a long-term care learning collaborative to work on improving care in our long-term care facilities; received grants for 2013-14 for a peer-to-peer caregiver project specifically serving the Asian community and the Senior Transportation Expansion, Access and Mobility Management (STEAMM) project; and many others. We will be putting a full report of our Year One Implementation on our website www.orangecountync.gov/aging later in the summer. Recently I attended the celebration for the 2012-13 UNC School of Public Health Capstone Team projects. I happen to think that we had the best team! Many thanks to Melissa Black, Jennifer Frank, Chelsea Kolander, Deanna LaMotte and Andy Weinhold for their outstanding work this year. The official name of their project was “Developing Improved and Expanded Communication Networks and Information Dissemination Methods for Health Promotion Among Older Adults in Orange County.” Thanks to them we have a roadmap of how to better communicate with you, including an improved website, the use of social media and, of course, the use of print media, which many persons in our community still prefer as a way to get information. You will also see the results of their work as we expand our wellness programming in the coming months. We are excited that we have again been selected to receive a Capstone Team for 2013-14. You will hear more about their project in the next Senior Times. As always, I love hearing from you as we work toward making Orange County the ideal community to age well.

Did you know that you can go to either or both senior centers – Central Orange Senior Center, Hillsborough or Seymour Center, Chapel Hill to participate in any of the activities/programs? Thanks to our dedicated staff, teachers and volunteers we have lots to choose from. Did you know that we are offering the following Specials Events among many other things this summer? Art Shows, Billiards Tournament, Chinese Opera, Cooking Classes with one of our art instructors, Lemonade & Laughs, Mystery Summer Treats and a Summer Spectacular with the Retros. Look in the Senior Times to find out which center is hosting these events, as well as others, and plan to attend. Also, did you know that there is a bus, the 420 or the “Hill to Hill” route that runs midday between the two Senior Center locations and it is FREE for adults 55 and over? The schedule can be picked up at either senior center, just ask at the front desk. Have you looked at the articles in the front of the Senior Times? There’s lots of helpful information, and activities too, such as: How to be Safe; National Senior Health & Fitness Day Info - Think Healthy, Eat Healthy, Get Healthy, Be Healthy; “CarFit” Program; Estate Planning Workshops - and these are just a few! Hope to see you at the Senior Centers this summer!

You’ll Want to Know New SHIIP Coordinator and Information and Benefits Specialist For the first time in almost 3 years the Department on Aging is fully staffed. Please see the article on page 7 about Beverly Shuford the new Seniors’ Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) Coordinator. Her official title is Information and Benefits Specialist. www. orangecountync.gov/aging/staff.asp Social Worker, Shuang Wang, MSW, has increased hours at Seymour Thanks to funding from a special grant, Shuang has more time to help the Asian participants - and she speaks Mandarin. Registration for Programs Required You should register for programs and classes in advance. Classes may be terminated if minimum numbers are not reached. Recently a class had 10 registered participants, but needed 20 and the instructor cancelled since there were not enough pre-registered. New Direct Phone Lines at the Seymour Center The staffs’ phone numbers have changed, see a list on the back page for direct numbers, but the front desk, 919-968-2070, and the Aging Helpline, 919-968-2087 stayed the same. On-line Registration and Credit Card Payments Accepted On-line registration is available for some of our programs through our website, www. orangecountync.gov/aging, in addition to being able to do it in person or on the phone. Payments may be made using a credit card at either of our Senior Centers’ front desks or when registering on-line. You are officially registered once the specific program fees have been paid. Join the Senior Centers’ Email List To add your address to the list, e-mail Myra Austin at maustin@orangecountync.gov. Information is sent out approximately every two weeks. Senior Times is on the Web For the current issue of Senior Times online, go to our web site: www.orangecountync.gov/aging. Do You Fit Your Car or Does Your CARFIT You?

CarFit is an educational program created by the American Society on Aging, and developed in collaboration with AARP, AAA, and the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA). The goals of the community-based program are three-fold: 1) Help drivers improve the “fit” of their vehicles for safety and comfort. 2) Promote conversations about driving safety and the continued need for mobility options to keep people participating in the life of their communities. 3) Link adults with relevant, local resources that can help ensure they drive safely longer. CarFit uses a trained team, including occupational therapy practitioners, to assist drivers with items such as: determining a clear line of sight over the steering wheel, maintaining adequate space between the front air bag and steering wheel, determining proper seat belt fit and use, and maximizing mirror positions. Participants drive in with their personal automobile for a 20-minute session. Please call the Seymour Center after May 8, 919-968-2070, and schedule a specific time to come during the session. THE SEYMOUR CENTER MARKS TWO ANNIVERSARIES By Walter Mack, President, Friends of the Robert and Pearl Seymour Center

When the Robert and Pearl Seymour Center held its grand opening on May 24, 2007, it became a major milestone in the history of the Orange County Department on Aging and for the Friends of the Robert and Pearl Seymour Center. The five-year anniversary was cause for great celebration by the senior citizens of Chapel Hill, Carrboro and Southern Orange County - and rightfully so. But another significant event occurred 15 years earlier that may have been overlooked. It signaled a new era and set the stage for all that was to follow. More than two decades ago on January 26, 1992 the grand opening of the new Chapel Hill Senior Center was held in the partially completed facility located in the Galleria at 400 Elliott Rd. A plaque commemorating the occasion and recognizing all the volunteers and supporters who made it possible now resides in a special place at the Seymour Center. “It was a chilly Sunday afternoon and a large crowd was on hand for the dedication ceremonies,” recalls Bob Seymour, then newlyretired pastor of the Binkley Baptist Church. He and his wife, Pearl, led the task force appointed by the Orange County Commissioners to establish a larger, more comprehensive senior center. Among those serving on the task force were Jerry Passmore, Janice Tyler, Lee Pavao, Alan Rimer, Moses Carey, Betty Landsberger, Don Wilhoit, R.D. Smith, Harry Phillips, Ruth Eddy, Mike Loveman, Melody Trent, John Link, Albert Kittrell, Harold Murdock and Norman Gustafson. “The Center was only about one-third completed at the Grand Opening,” said Pavao who at the time was a representative of the Chapel Hill Parks and Recreation. “Work began in earnest to upfit the space. Senior citizen volunteers pitched in with professionals as sheet rock hangers, tapers, mudders and carpenters. I would call it a total team effort. I think even Bob Seymour helped paint!” To raise needed funds, a non-profit organization, “The Friends of the New Chapel Hill Senior Center,” was organized by Seymour, Pavao and Rimer. In May, 1992, the Internal Revenue Service officially recognized the New Chapel Hill Senior Center as a 501 (3) (C) non-profit entity which allowed it to accept tax-deductible contributions. “The New Senior Center occupied about 12,000 sq ft of space, and an operating committee of senior volunteers had to be put together,” said Pavao. “This became the nucleus of the Friends organization. He continued, “Many of the programs were the same as we have today, but not as extensive. Attending that first grand opening were county and town managers, commissioners and town councilman along with seniors and the general public. We received many donations and the names of the donors are on display now at the Seymour Center.” “At that time,” noted Pavao, “Jerry Passmore was the Director of the Department on Aging and Janice Tyler served as the Senior Centers Administrator. Kathy Porter was the director of the RSVP program and continues to serve in that capacity today.”

Even though the Elliot Road senior center had just opened its doors, Dr. Seymour was envisioning a more ambitious undertaking – a permanent place for older adults to gather that would meet the growing needs of Chapel Hill and Carrboro. Throughout the 1980s and 90s, articles and feature stories appeared in national publications touting Chapel Hill as one of the most desirable places to retire in the nation. So it was no secret that Chapel Hill was the place to retire. The once quiet, laid-back town of 25,000, home to the University of North Carolina, was destined to become a mecca for older adults looking for a great place to retire. Seymour fully understood that Chapel Hill with all of its amenities— world class medical facilities, cultural and educational venues second to none and top-notch schools—would soon become a magnet attracting boomers to settle here. Foremost in Seymour’s mind was to build a senior center large enough to accommodate the influx of retirees who were expected to converge on Chapel Hill in the coming years. “When we started out we were in a former school. We had come a long way,” said Seymour. “But there was still much more work to be done, and we put every effort into making it happen.” Among its long range recommendations, the task force had proposed a multi-purpose senior center to be located on 34 acres of land owned by Orange County on Homestead Road adjacent to the Human Services Center. Behind the scenes, Seymour, Pavao who was elected to serve on the Chapel Hill Town Council, and other local officials consulted with the Orange County Commissioners to encourage placement of a bond issue on the ballot which would finance construction of a permanent, new senior center. In 2001, Orange County voters approved the bond issue that cleared the way for construction. Gurlitz Architects of Durham was retained to design the facility and a $6 million contract was awarded to Resolute Building Company to construct the center. On May 30, 2005 ground was broken, and on May 24, 2007 Pearl Seymour snipped a ribbon to commemorate the grand opening of the newly-named Robert and Pearl Seymour Center. Pearl passed away last year, but her memory lives on. To honor Bob and Pearl, the facility was named the Robert and Pearl Seymour Center in recognition of their vision, wisdom and tireless energy. As Bob Seymour observed, “This building represents the fulfillment of a long held dream that finally became a reality. We owe a great debt of gratitude to Orange County and its citizens who enabled us to build a modern facility of this kind and to staff it with competent and creative people.” And so the Robert and Pearl Seymour Center celebrates not one, but two anniversaries!

Rethinking Retirement Communities: A Discussion on SelfDirected Intentional Community

SENIOR TIMES NEWS

A growing number of older adults and boomers are thinking about how they want to spend their later years. Many are considering various living arrangements, including an Elder Self-directed Community (ESC), which is intentional with the residents deciding on choices and directions. Often organized as co-housing communities, or housing cooperatives, ESCs are a planned residential community designed to have a high degree of social cohesion and teamwork. Seniors in our community have expressed interest in exploring innovative options for retirement living. This forum is an opportunity for anyone interested in ESCs to gather for a discussion. Mary Fraser, Aging Transitions Administrator with the OC Depart on Aging and Paul Klever, Executive Director of Charles House, will facilitate the session. Please call the Central Orange Senior Center at 919245-2015 to register, or if you have questions call the Aging Helpline at 919-968-2087. Central Orange SC (253009-01) June 11 6 pm

RECYCLING DURABLE MEDICAL EQUIPMENT We accept donations of gently used Durable Medical Equipment (DME) that is in good condition, and distribute it to seniors in Orange County who need it temporarily. DME is any equipment that has been prescribed for a health-related reason and is designed to improve the function and/or safety of the user. It includes: walkers, raised commode seats, shower chairs, tub seats and wheelchairs. We always welcome DME that can be used by seniors, but we are in particular need of raised toilet seats, wheelchairs, and tub benches. At this time, we do NOT need bedside commodes or standard (non-rolling) walkers. IF YOU HAVE SOMETHING TO DONATE, bring it to either senior center and leave it at the front desk. UNIVERSAL DESIGN:

Considerations for Everyday Spaces The concept of universal design is focused on creating tools and environments that function well for all potential users. Universal Design (UD) moves beyond the idea of accessibility to include the concept of maximizing participation by all people who interact with a space - regardless of their age, ability or stature. UD principles can be employed in planning for new construction or remodeling of homes and businesses. It is also useful to consider in the way space and objects are arranged within a home or public space, the way educational materials are designed, and the ways objects are designed or chosen for specific uses. This session will share examples of ways in which UD can influence our everyday lives, and ways to consider UD principles in setting up household spaces. COMMUNITY GIVING FUND The Orange County Community Giving Fund is intended to be an encompassing fund for Orange County government, so donations can be given to any department or County-sponsored activity through this fund. All gifts will be tax deductible and used for the purpose for which they are given and acknowledged as such. Additionally, this fund is a framework for receiving a variety of donations, whether cash, stocks, bonds, or real property. The fund is managed by the Triangle Community Foundation. All invested Orange County funds are subject to a minimum annual administrative fee of $300. This fund gives the public an opportunity to designate a tax deductible donation, which supplements the County’s annual budget. Orange County residents give back in a variety of ways, including designating part of their estate through the fund and specifying the purpose for which the gift will be used. At the Orange County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) meeting on Tuesday, March 19, it approved and set the backdrop for the unveiling of the County’s new Community Giving Fund. To learn more about the fund or to request an information packet, please contact Orange County Financial and Administrative Services Department at 919-245-2450 or the Triangle Community Foundation at 919-474-8370. To make a donation online, please visit the Orange County Community Giving Fund Web site at www.ocncgiving.org Note: The Friends of Central Orange Senior Center and the Friends of the Robert and Pearl Seymour Center continue to support the respective centers and welcome all levels of financial support and can be made directly to each organization.

Slightly Off the Garden Path By RSVP Staff

RSVP 55+ Volunteer Opportunities

Laurie Renz moved here after retiring to be close to her family and to pursue her passion for gardening which includes developing landscapes for wildlife. When asked “why volunteer” she answered, “Volunteering obviously gives me an opportunity to give back to the community - but also to continue my own learning,” which includes a master’s in biology, academic training in horticulture and a doctorate in psychology. Laurie is a Professor Emerita from the University of Cincinnati where she taught for 20 years as well as serving as the human services program director. In addition, she worked with community mental health

centers for many years. Her enthusiasm for learning and gardening opened the next chapter of her life as an RSVP Volunteer and takes “giving back” to the next level. Through the RSVP Volunteer Program, she’s working as a Reading Partner in Orange County Schools. “The teachers have provided great guidance enabling me to be as effective as possible with the children,” Laurie said. “I had never worked with this population and have thoroughly enjoyed it.” Laurie has also found several ways to share her love for gardening while volunteering with both the

Her Three Loves By RSVP Staff Her family, her faith and Carrboro. RSVP Volunteer Mildred Harris came to UNC Chapel Hill in 1969 for her master’s in medical anthropology. She married, they raised their family, and she developed church youth ministries. Later she assisted her retired husband, now a minister at a small church, and is currently involved in a community prayer group.

RSVP Volunteer Mildred Harris’s outlook on life,” Because of the many ways God has blessed me, I have a desire to pass it on to others by serving in my church and in my community.”

After homeschooling her children, Mildred worked for the City of Durham until 2010. She then set out to find the perfect volunteer niche in Carrboro and to become physically fit.

RSVP-Senior Education Corps (SEC) helped her find the Carrboro Elementary School Media Center which needed assistance and where she is never bored. There is a new “Honey Do” lest every week. “I feel that I am serving the librarians, teachers and the children by working efficiently… they can all then readily access the resources they need.” She says that using her skills working with the books helps sharpen her mind. “I find that I can think with greater clarity on the weeks that I volunteer in the media center.”

Her goal to stay physically fit has been accomplished by literally walking the streets. She (along with a friend) are walking every street in Carrboro, end to end, and in keeping with the prayer groups for cities prays all along the way for the neighborhoods, businesses, schools and more. Through her walks she has grown to love the town even more. This busy lady found time to help. Can you find an hour in your schedule? If so, call 919-245-4241.

If you have questions or need assistance with class choices, please call Mike Gilliom – 919-636-0993 To check our class schedule, enroll, or sign up for our announcements, go to our web site: www.seymourtechcenter.org GENERAL INFORMATION Prerequisites: You must own an IBM-compatible Personal Computer with Windows XP or higher operating system. If you have little or no experience, your first course should be Computer Fundamentals. Supplies: Students will need to purchase, and bring to class, a USB Flash drive with a GB of free space. For Computer Fundamentals, a 4 or 8 Gig drive is more than enough. Go to an office supply or big box store and buy their cheapest drive. Curriculum: In 3 monthly sessions, courses range from basics to more advanced topics and are tailored to seniors age 50 and above. Schedule: Full courses run 12 16 hrs, with 2 two-hour classes a week for 3 - 4 weeks. Workshops and Seminars vary. See the table that follows. Instruction: Classes enroll a maximum of 9 students, each with a computer and a comprehensive student guide. Experienced teachers, one for every 3 students, provide generous individual attention. You should plan to practice on a computer at home, about 1 hour for each hour in class.

Classes for the Vision Impaired: The Seymour Technology Center is pleased to announce that it will be offering courses tailored to individuals with vision impairments that range from moderate to severe. In particular, we plan to offer the Computer Fundamentals course utilizing the screen reading program JAWS, enabling full use of the PC without reliance upon a mouse or a monitor. Beyond the PC, mobile technology is also becoming accessible to those with limited or no sight. Both the iPad and the iPhone have auditory capabilities making much of their capability usable via speech and hearing (for example, the sending and receiving of email). If you, or anyone you know, are interested, please contact Tim Miles at 919-969–3032 (x228), or ocdisabilityawareness@gmail. com for further information. •

Las Abuelas de Plaza de Mayo, an Argentinian human rights organization of grandmothers committed to finding their lost grandchildren they believe were stolen by their country’s government some 30 years ago. Tuggle’s film tells the story of at least 10,000, and some estimate as many as 30,000, dissidents of the military dictatorship who were kidnapped, tortured and killed during Argentina’s Dirty War from 1976-1983. Those kidnapped became known as Los Desaparecidos or “the disappeared.” Some of the women were pregnant or new mothers when captured, and infants ended up in homes of people sympathetic to the regime. The babies’ names, birth dates and other identifiers were changed. Las Abuelas has located more than 100 missing grandchildren, many of whom had no knowledge of their true identities. Dance Argentine Tango: The Healing Embrace New! Argentine tango is first and foremost a social dance recently inscribed on UNESCO’s “Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.” It originated

in Argentina in the late 19th century, but enthusiastically took off as a major dance after it was introduced to Parisians early in the 20th century by the famous Uruguayan singer Carlos Gardel, among others. Although passionate, the music is very pleasant to hear. The dance movements are gracious without being strenuous. The embrace is soft and pleasant, and somewhat more intimate than other dances. It provides a truly cordial experience with life-long possibilities of improvement and enjoyment. The 1 hr 30 min classes will provide progressive group training to enable the participants to properly walk, navigate, and acquire the skills necessary to enjoy a milonga (social ball where tango is danced). Emphasis will be on posture, balance, axis, walk, pivots, turns, breathing, and embellishments for both the followers and leaders. No prior exposure is necessary and all ages and levels are welcome. Try to come in couples, although there will be rotations throughout the class. Stay tuned for the Seymour Center Milonga coming this fall.
