I can’t believe the summer is almost over. We at the Department on Aging have been very busy. As many of you know, the 2012-17 Orange County Master Aging Plan (MAP) was accepted by the Board of County Commissioners on May 1. I, along with two Masters in Public Health interns, spent much of the summer interviewing the members of the MAP Steering Committee to establish their role in successfully meeting the MAP’s goals over the next two years. The Department on Aging’s staff has also been working to prioritize their goals for the next year with no new resources, and what might be possible in the second year with some additional funding. The Advisory Board on Aging is taking all this information into account as they develop the 2012-14 MAP Implementation Plan, which will be available for review in mid-September on our website at www.orangecountync.gov/ aging. If you’d like a paper copy, please ask for one at either Senior Center’s front desk, or call 919-968-2087. I encourage you to stay involved and informed as this is a community plan – and impacts all of us! I enjoy hearing from you as we work toward making Orange County the ideal community to age in place.
FROM THE R O T C E DIR
Sincerely, Janice Tyler Director, Orange County Department on Aging, jtyler@orangecountync.gov

Falls Free - You Want to Be! National Falls Prevention Awareness Day is observed the first day of fall to promote and increase public awareness about how to prevent and reduce falls among older adults. Falls Prevention Awareness Day is Sat, Sept 22. According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), falls are the leading cause of injury deaths among adults age 65+. One in three adults age 65 + falls each year. It is estimated that approximately 17% of older North Carolinians experienced a fall in the past three months, with one-third of those falls resulting in an injury. The good news is that most falls are preventable. Recommendations for preventing falls among older adults include encouraging them to exercise regularly, have their medications reviewed, get their vision checked, reduce hazards in their homes that can lead to falls, and have a balance screening. FREE Balance Screening will be provided on Fri, Sept 21, at the Central Orange Senior Center, (242502-01), 919-245-2015, and the Seymour Center, (342500), 919-968-2070. Call the Center nearest you for an appointment, or stop by on Fri, Sept 21, 9 am – 4 pm for a FREE balance screening and consultation with a physical therapist.

The Senior Wellness Clinic at The Central Orange Senior Center and The Seymour Center Clinic’s Purpose: The purpose of this multidisciplinary clinic is to enable seniors to live independently in the community by focusing screening and treatment on mood, memory, mobility, and falls prevention. By early identification of risk factors we hope to prevent the negative consequences of falls and disability. Team of Specialists in Aging: ◆ Geriatrician ◆ Occupational Therapist ◆ Pharmacist ◆ Physical Therapist ◆ Social Worker ◆ Dietitian What will a visit to the clinic include? ◆ Multidisciplinary assessments ◆ Clients can expect to spend 1-2 hours or so visiting with the team. ◆ We work together to create individual recommendations for medical care, exercise, or environmental risks. It’s Here Powerful Tools for Caregivers! The Orange County Center of NC Cooperative Extension and the Orange County Department on Aging are co-sponsoring a very important 6-part educational program, “AARP Powerful Tools for Caregivers”. Currently an estimated 46 million Americans are providing unpaid care for an adult family member, or loved one, who is chronically ill or disabled. 20% of the US population will be 65 years or older by the year 2030. As our population ages, caregiving is a responsibility that is expected to touch nearly all American families. The Powerful Tools for Caregivers Training is designed to provide caregivers with skills and strategies to cope with its many challenges. Participants will learn how to reduce stress, improve selfconfidence, communicate their feelings more effectively, improve their decision-making abilities, locate community resources, and learn how to more effectively balance the caregiver’s role. Register for the 6-part Powerful Tools for Caregiver series at the Seymour Center by calling 919968-2070. Minimum of 8, and maximum of 15, participants. Registration deadline: Sept 4 Fee: FREE to Caregivers. $45 for professionals (Bring check made out to Orange County Department on Aging to the 1st session) Seymour Center (343014) Wed, Sept 19 – Oct 24 1 – 3:30 pm

RECYCLING DURABLE MEDICAL EQUIPMENT Did you know that the Aging Transitions team recycles gently used durable medical equipment (DME)? We accept donations of DME that is in good condition, and distribute it to seniors in Orange County who need it temporarily. DME is any equipment that has been prescribed for a health-related reason and is designed to improve the function and/or safety of the user. It includes: walkers, raised commode seats, shower chairs, tub seats and wheelchairs. We always welcome DME that can be used by seniors, but we are in particular need of raised toilet seats, wheelchairs and 4-wheeled walkers (sometimes called rollators). At this time, we do NOT need bedside commodes or standard (non-rolling) walkers. IF YOU HAVE SOMETHING TO DONATE, bring it to either senior center and leave it at the front desk. Please leave your name and contact information if you would like a receipt for your income taxes. IF YOU NEED A PIECE OF EQUIPMENT, please call the Aging Helpline at 919-968-2087 and let us know what you need.

Medicare Part D
It’s Time to Make a Change! Mark your calendar for the Medicare Part D Annual Enrollment Period – Mon, Oct 15 – Fri, Dec 7. Beginning each Jan 1, most Medicare Part D prescription drug plans change what medications they cover, as well as their premiums. This may mean higher drug costs and/or premiums if you stay with your current plan for 2013. Find out if your current Medicare Part D plan will offer you the best prescription drug coverage, and be the most cost-effective, by coming to a FREE Medicare Part D check-up at an Orange County senior center. Trained Seniors’ Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) volunteers will help you evaluate your Medicare Part D options – which may result in saving you money! Take advantage of this brief annual period when you can change to a different plan without a penalty. However, people on subsidies can change plans throughout the year. To find out if you’re eligible for a subsidy, as well as answers to other Medicare or health insurance questions, call Latonya Brown, SHIIP Coordinator, at 919-968-2082. Light refreshments will be served. To schedule your personal Medicare Part D appointment, call 919968-2070 for the Seymour Center in Chapel Hill, or 919-245-2015 for the Central Orange Senior Center in Hillsborough.

Concerned About Your Memory? Come to the Central Orange Senior Center, Hillsborough or the Seymour Center, Chapel Hill on Tues, Nov 13, National Memory Screening Day. People can get a FREE confidential Memory Screening if they are concerned about memory loss. The objective is early detection and intervention. Memory screenings are important as they can be a significant first step toward finding out if a person may have a memory problem. A screening is not used to diagnose any particular illness and does not replace consultation with a qualified physician or other healthcare professional. It can check a person’s memory and other thinking skills and can indicate if someone might benefit from a more complete medical visit. It is very important to identify the cause for any memory loss. That is why a person should follow up for a complete checkup with a qualified healthcare professional. Some memory problems can be readily treated - such as those caused by vitamin deficiencies or thyroid problems. Other memory problems might result from causes that are not currently reversible such as Alzheimer’s disease or other types of dementia. In general, the earlier the diagnosis, the easier it is to treat one of these conditions. Screenings will be offered during individual appointments on Tues, Nov 13 from 10 am – 4 pm at Seymour Center, Chapel Hill (342509) at 919-968-2070; and 10 am – 1 pm at Central Orange Senior Center, Hillsborough (242504-01) at 919-245-2015.

Fifth Class of “Town Treasures” Honored
On Wednesday, October 17, from 5:30 – 7:30 pm, the fifth group of “Town Treasures” will be permanently hung in the Seymour Center to join the four previous classes. These outstanding older adults have guided, ministered, taught, and led the Chapel Hill-Carrboro communities for many years. Their contributions and examples help us link the past with the present.

Did you know… Each year the Orange County RSVP 55+ Volunteer Program collects information to show the impact that RSVP volunteers make on the clients they serve. We are proud of the service they contributed across Orange County for 2011-12. Here is a partial picture of RSVP volunteers serving in Orange County. See the “Volunteer Calendar” elsewhere in this issue for opportunities.
Award-winning local photographer, Catharine Carter, took pictures of all the Town Treasures. Each black and white portrait captures them either at home or in a location that reflects their contributions to our community. In addition, local writers interviewed the honorees to document their favorite community memories, as well as the local changes they’ve witnessed.
480 RSVP volunteers provided more than 44,000 service hours – equal to about 21 paid employees.
This year’s “Treasurers” will be revealed at a reception on October 17. When you see these special photographs, you’ll come away from your “visits” with a greater knowledge of our local history, as well as an appreciation for some of the many people who’ve made this area so special.
• More than 100 RSVP volunteers served with the 2012 Orange County RSVP-VITA Free Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program, a program directly administered by the RSVP office to fill an unmet community need. VITA volunteers were trained, tested and served at 8 sites in Orange and Chatham counties. More than 1900 low- to moderate-income clients saved an average of $175 each in tax preparation fees and received refunds and credits totaling over $2 million. A new partnership and new VITA site was made available at the OC Dept of Social Services in Hillsborough. Funded through the IRS, Triangle United Way of the Greater Triangle, Orange County Government and the Towns of Carrboro and Chapel Hill.
A reception will be held on Wed, Oct 17, 5:30 – 7:30 pm at the Seymour Center, co-sponsored by the Friends of the Seymour Center and the Chapel Hill Historical Society. It will honor these very special “Treasurers” who’ve been such an integral part of the community. Having their portraits permanently hung in the Seymour Center, where they can be readily seen, is an honor. Come join us for this very special occasion!
Senior Centers: To Be or Not to Be?… That is the Question. Senior Center Survey – September Did you know that this survey’s important, and we need your feedback on senior center programs, courses and classes? Why? It meets funding requirements, helps staff to develop better programs, and documents activities. Data from surveys also show the impact that senior center programs have on your life. This information may influence future funding. As part of the efforts to get feedback from all program areas, we will be collecting Senior Center Surveys during the 1st two weeks of September for all our ongoing classes and classes that have a beginning and ending date. Once you complete and submit a paper copy of the “senior center survey” at the front desk, you will be given a ticket to enter your name in the drawing for special prizes. Help us to help you by completing a survey!
Are You a Caregiver Running on Empty? Are you an unpaid caregiver, who needs a break from your caregiving responsibilities? If so, you may want to take advantage of the Orange County Department on Aging’s Caregivers Day Out program. It gives caregivers a chance to take a break while their loved ones socialize and participate in group activities and exercises. Caregivers Day Out is limited to 10 participants. The program is free for qualifying participants and is held on Wednesdays, from 11 am to 4 pm, at the Robert and Pearl Seymour Center in Chapel Hill. If you are interested in being considered for participation, or would like more information, please contact the Program Manager, Carolyn B Jefferson, RN, BSN at 919929-1742.
More than 30,000 people were served directly or indirectly by RSVP volunteers placed at 73 partner agencies.
• More than 40 RSVP volunteers in both school districts served 211 students, 44 of whom received one-on-one tutoring assistance. RSVP administers the Senior Education Corps, an intergenerational partnership linking talents and experiences of older adults with the curiosity and energy of children of all ages. Funded through the Corporation for National & Community Service, Orange Co Govt and Town of Carrboro. • 190 RSVP volunteers served 16,700 hours in 32 unique jobs across two senior centers. More than 7,000 participants and 67% of the staff were impacted. 76% of survey respondents agreed that participating in senior center programs contributed to an improvement in their lives….More than 80% of respondents reported that they learned new things that are useful to them, enjoyed life more and have seen their spirits lifted….As for staff, 83% reported that volunteers enabled them to improve the quality or expand the number of services offered….91% of staff were very satisfied with most volunteers, specifically front desk, VITA tax volunteers, SHIIP, special events, clerical, board members, kitchen and education program assistants. • 14 volunteers helped adults improve their reading, math and English conversation skills or get their high school diploma. 13 planned and taught computer classes to older adults, 21 helped theaters or performances, 19 supported libraries, 11 built Habitat houses or worked in the Re-Store, 17 focused on addressing homelessness, 7 “Friends” were matched with individuals to prevent social isolation, 25 helped provide food and lodging to families of hospitalized children and to hospital outpatients and 7 participated in disaster preparedness. Nine volunteers plan and plant the flower beds at both Senior Center entrances.

They can also help people complete an application to reduce their Orange County real estate taxes. Our Aging Transition social workers are able to discuss your questions and concerns about these programs in a confidential setting, and to complete the required paper work. Now, you no longer have to go to the Department of Social Services (DSS). This is called, “One-Stop Shopping”. You go to the senior centers for programs, meals, exercises, classes, fellowship, trips, etc – and you can apply for special assistance, too! To find out if you qualify for any of these programs, call the Aging Transitions Help Line at 919-968-2087, Mon - Fri, 9 am – 4 pm to make an appointment.

Orange County Advisory Committees Seek Members Did you know that the Orange County Commissioners have a number of advisory committees to give them “boots on the ground” to help identify and deal with pressing community issues? Two of these advisory committees are actively seeking new members, and greater community awareness of their missions. The Orange County Nursing Home Community Advisory Committee (OCNHCAC) advocates for nursing home residents. Similarly, the Orange County Adult Care Home Community Advisory Committee (OCACHCAC) advocates for residents of Orange County’s adult care homes (also called assisted living facilities). Every 2-3 months the committees’ teams visit the nursing and adult care homes in Orange County. They observe residents and the general conditions of the homes. They talk to residents and ask if they have any suggestions for the homes’ administrators. Committee members also observe the conditions of the facilities in an effort to assure that they safely meet each resident’s needs. Once the site visits are completed, the team members meet with each home’s administrator to review their findings – both their positive and negative ones. When the team’s visit is completed, members report to the whole committee. Records from these meetings are then sent to our Ombudsman, and are posted on Orange County’s web site. OCNHCAC and OCACHCAC members are appointed by the Orange County Commissioners. Currently, there are vacancies on both committees. If you are interested in becoming a nursing home or adult care home resident advocate, applying is as easy as completing an online application form found at http://www.orangecountync.gov/boards/ apply.asp. For more information on these two advisory committees, or on how to apply, please contact : Ed Flowers (Nursing Home Committee Chair at ed_flowers@yahoo.com) or Daniel Hatley (Adult Care Home Committee Chair at dan@hatleylawoffice.com). To report a concern regarding the safety or well-being of a resident in either an Orange County nursing home or an adult care home, contact Orange County’s Ombudsman Charlotte Terwilliger at cterwilliger@tjcog.com or call 919-558-9401.

Tax Relief for Seniors and/or Disabled Adults
Page 11
Prime Time Players’ Festival
Did you know some people may qualify to get help paying for their primary residence’s real estate taxes in NC? People age 65 +, and those who are permanently disabled (per a physician), and whose income was below $27,100 last year may be eligible to exclude the first $25,000 of their home’s assessed value, or 50 % of its value if that is greater. For instance, if your house is assessed at $100,000, 50% would be excluded (since that’s greater than $25,000) and you would pay taxes on an assessed value of only $50,000. If your income was greater than $27,100, but less than $40,650, you may qualify for the Circuit Breaker Tax Deferment Program. Neither program counts assets. The Disabled Veterans Exclusion allows Veterans who are disabled and had an Honorable Discharge to exclude up to $45,000 of an appraised value of their permanent residence. If you’d like more information on any of these programs, contact the Orange County Tax Assessor’s Office at 919-245-2100, or go to www.orangecountync.gov/assessor/prop. You may also call the Aging Transition Helpline at 919-968-2087 to make an appointment with a social worker to get help completing an application. In the unusual case that an application is denied, there is an appeal process.

The married Claire is initially reluctant since it has been 40 yrs since they were lovers. Soon, they rekindle their love, much to the disbelief of her husband and the incredulity of their respective offspring. Thurs, Sept 20 — Away from Her - “In a refreshingly direct, unassuming manner, Away From Her considers two great human mysteries: the persistence of love, and the workings of the brain. It takes the twilight of a long, mostly happy marriage as a vantage point from which to look back at youth and forward into the waiting darkness. ‘A little bit of grace’ is what Fiona, a slender and elegant woman with Alzheimer’s disease, counsels in response to its ravages. And grace is what Julie Christie, who plays Fiona, manifests in every scene, even as Fiona feels the tissue of her self begin to crumble and fade.” — New York Times

Thurs, Oct 4 — Tender Mercies - This moving and thought-provoking film is a timeless classic of redemption and perseverance. Robert Duvall totally captures the pain, heartache, despair and ultimate survival of a once beloved entertainer. The film is an emotional tour-de-force for all the main characters, as they deal with forgiveness, doubt, loss of faith and memories of what might have been. Duvall received the Academy Award for Best Actor and Horton Foote received one for Best Original Screenplay. Thurs, Nov 1 — Shop on Main Street - “Yes, the movie has to do with the tragedy of Jewish people in the poisoned and poisonous Europe of WWII, but the emotional implications go much further than that. They address the human condition in general. This is one of those egregiously few movies which makes a ‘philosopher’ out of each of us… even if for a minute only... even if we only philosophize with our unstoppable tears. I am not one to weep easily at movies, but I defy you to watch this fabulous work of cinema without being touched to the deepest fiber of your soul.” — Mark Athitakis Thurs, Nov 15 — The Lives of Others - “Exhaustively authentic, with fine strokes of symbolism, The Lives of Others [which won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Film] depicts East Berlin in the year 1984, when the Berlin Wall was still standing, separating East from West. Everyone behind it is enslaved... There is no equivocation of evil; there are only men and women whose lives are moved by ideas in a revolving intellectual mystery, powered by an unconquerable love for life.” — Scott Holleran Thurs, Nov 29 — The First Grader - “Early in The First Grader, an ancient man, as hard and lean as his walking stick, strides miles across the coarse Kenyan bush. When he gets to his destination — a rural primary school — the gate is already locked leaving him to stand alone on one side, with everything he wants on the other.” Before the film is over, the struggle of this 84-year-old illiterate Kenyan will “alienate neighbors, test teachers, inconvenience politicians, spark violence, trigger a public debate, and ultimately turn him into the poster child for the power of education.” — Los Angeles Times

Jill of All Trades
Volunteer for Tax Season
By Martha Brunstein, RSVP-VITA Volunteer
RSVP 55+ Volunteer Opportunities
Most organizations have a Jack of All Trades. RSVP-VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance - a free tax preparation service for lowto moderate-income clients) in Orange and Chatham Counties has a Jill of All Trades, who has been its lead organizer for three years. Jill Hallenbeck has done every VITA job for over a decade – and has been extraordinary in organizing and running this vital community program. Over 100 VITA volunteers prepare over 2,000 income tax returns annually and are responsible for millions of dollars in tax refunds to individuals. Jill lives in rural Orange County with her husband, Peter, and young nephew. In addition to her VITA “job”, she is part of the family’s engineering business and volunteers with the middle school technology enrichment club and PTSO (previously known as PTA). During the summer, she enjoys reading, being the baseball team’s “mom”, and working at the UNC Farmers Market. Since her life outside VITA has become more time consuming, Jill decided to retire as Site Coordinator but will continue to be part of the program. Although she has small feet, Jill leaves big shoes to fill!
Thanks to Jill being the Site Coordinator, a committee shares the responsibility of getting VITA ready and keeping it running through the tax season. While many seasoned VITA volunteers continue for years, new volunteers are needed every year to do a variety of jobs. Training and mentoring are provided. Kathy Porter, Director of RSVP, said that special programs such as VITA allow people like Jill, who are pre-official retirement age, to volunteer when they have the time, ability and willingness to work with taxpayers. VITA volunteers run the gamut from US ambassadors to accountants, university professors, homemakers, business owners, teachers, doctors, lawyers, college students - and more. ABCs of SEC Have you ever seen the smile on a child’s face when they suddenly realize they can read? Priceless! Helping a child succeed often goes beyond the classroom and the parents - it takes a community. Can you see yourself making a difference in a child’s life? RSVP 55+ Senior Education Corps (SEC) can take you there. Find out the ABC’s of SEC at its first community-wide gathering on Thurs, Aug 30, at the Seymour Center from 10 am – 2 pm. “This gathering will bring together educators, volunteer coordinators, and current and potential volunteers from both school districts for the first time,” said SEC Coordinator Judy Mathias. Speakers from both school districts will highlight volunteer impact, opportunities for training and the need for volunteer involvement. “We welcome new volunteers to come and find out how they can make a difference,” Mathias explained. Since 2000, SEC volunteers have served in schools and community nonprofit agencies that focus on helping young people have positive experiences in school and then in their futures. Volunteers register and interview with the RSVP-SEC. At that time, they are matched with a school and grade level of their choice. Literacy volunteers receive free training. Seating for the meeting is limited, and a light lunch will be served. To reserve your spot, please contact Judy Mathias by Fri, Aug 15 at 919-968-2057 or jmathias@orangecountync.gov SEC is an intergenerational partnership linking the talents and experiences of older adults with the curiosity and energy of children of all ages. It is administered through the Orange County RSVP 55+ Volunteer Program, a branch of the Orange County Dept on Aging. RSVP recruits adults 55 years of age and over and matches them with opportunities in schools, nonprofit or government agencies. It receives funds through Orange County Government, the Towns of Carrboro and Chapel Hill and the Corporation for National & Community Service.

The married Claire is initially reluctant since it has been 40 yrs since they were lovers. Soon, they rekindled their love, much to the disbelief of her husband and the incredulity of their respective offspring. Thurs, Sept 20 — Away from Her “In a refreshingly direct, unassuming manner, Away From Her considers two great human mysteries: the persistence of love, and the workings of the brain. It takes the twilight of a long, mostly happy marriage as a vantage point from which to look back at youth and forward into the waiting darkness. ‘A little bit of grace’ is what Fiona, a slender and elegant woman with Alzheimer’s disease, counsels in response to its ravages. And grace is what Julie Christie, who plays Fiona, manifests in every scene, even as Fiona feels the tissue of her self begin to crumble and fade.” — New York Times Thurs, Oct 4 — Tender Mercies This moving and thought-provoking film is a timeless classic of redemption and perseverance. Robert Duvall totally captures the pain, heartache, despair and ultimate survival of a once beloved entertainer. The film is an emotional tour-de-force for all the main characters, as they deal with forgiveness, doubt, loss of faith and memories of what might have been. Duvall received the Academy Award for Best Actor and
Page 29 Horton Foote received one for Best Original Screenplay.
Thurs, Nov 1 — Shop on Main Street- “Yes, the movie has to do with the tragedy of Jewish people in the poisoned and poisonous Europe of WWII, but the emotional implications go much further than that. They address the human condition in general. This is one of those egregiously few movies which makes a ‘philosopher’ out of each of us… even if for a minute only... even if we only philosophize with our unstoppable tears. I am not one to weep easily at movies, but I defy you to watch this fabulous work of cinema without being touched to the deepest fiber of your soul.” — Mark Athitakis
Thurs, Nov 15 — The Lives of Others “Exhaustively authentic, with fine strokes of symbolism, The Lives of Others [which won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Film] depicts East Berlin in the year 1984, when the Berlin Wall was still standing, separating East from West. Everyone behind it is enslaved... There is no equivocation of evil; there are only men and women whose lives are moved by ideas in a revolving intellectual mystery, powered by an unconquerable love for life.” — Scott Holleran
Thurs, Nov 29 — The First Grader “Early in The First Grader, an ancient man, as hard and lean as his walking stick, strides miles across the coarse Kenyan bush.

POETRY WITH RICKY GARNI AT COVENANT PLACE Each Poetry & Prose class at Covenant Place this fall will contain a variety of readings, discussions, writing workshops and sharing of recollections that will direct the experience of reflection towards the enrichment and focused reading and crafting our own work. Covenant Place 10:30 - 11:30 am This class is about objects that elicit the strongest and most intimate responses – a candy bar, a waterfall, a kiss, cotton candy, and many more. Participants will write short prose poems based on many of these as we discover how so many objects are common to us, and can conjure a treasury of diverse recollections. Thurs, Sept 13 Misunderstandings Polly Duff Bresnick recently wrote a book of stanzas 14 – 23 of the The Odyssey by Homer, mistranslated visually from the ancient Greek, looking

at the foreign shapes and symbols of the Greek in search of familiar, English words. This has been termed eyerhyming, bad lip reading, or Rorschach writing. Here, the Greek and English are placed side-by-side so that the reader can judge the visual translations. Today we will try our own “visual translations”, misinterpreting familiar objects. Be prepared to look at something familiar quite differently. Thurs, Oct 18
Writing on the Moon We will listen to a soundtrack for a silent film about the Moon by Brian and Roger Eno (Apollo Atmospheres and Soundtracks) and use Eno’s Oblique Strategy Cards (“A Hundred Worthwhile Dilemmas” that give directions for virtually any creative act which many people, includ¬ing Eno himself, use when they feel stumped.) Thurs, Nov 8
