Community Input Needed Regarding Computer Classes For People With Low Vision Or Blindness Computer classes for individuals with blindness or low vision were piloted at the Seymour Center during the Fall of 2010. These classes became a reality because of the cooperative work between the Orange County Disability Awareness Council, SeniorNet, United Way, the NC Division of Services for the Blind, and the Orange County Department on Aging. All these agencies are committed to continuing the classes and are using the summer to further develop the program, instruct new volunteers, and receive input from the community regarding interest in these classes. Please contact us if you have an interest in participating in future classes, if you have any friends or family members who might benefit from such a program, or if you have insights about the curriculum you would like to share with us. Please call 968-2087 or email Agingtransitions@co.orange.nc.us

Sacred Arts Tour – Monks of Drepung Gomang Monastery to Offer Workshops

Every year the Drepung Gomang Monastery, in the South India state of Karnataka, sends 8 monks to the US. The tour offers a chance to see and experience Tibetan cultural, artistic and religious expression and gives the Monastery’s monks the opportunity to raise funds to educate, feed, house and care for almost 2,000 exiled Tibetan monks. The National Sponsor of the Sacred Arts Tour is the Drepung Gomang Institute, a non-profit organization. We’re very fortunate that the tour will include a stop in Chapel Hill, from Sat, May 21 to Sat, June 4. The Town of Chapel Hill’s Parks & Recreation Cultural Arts Division is supporting this program by offering exhibition space at 523 East Franklin St, at the corner of Boundary St, from Sun, May 22 to Mon, May 30 where the monks will create a Green Tara Sacred Sand Mandala. They will also offer workshops for adults and children, a Tibetan Cultural pageant presentation and other cultural activities. Come to the following workshops at the Seymour Center: Wed, June 1 (9 – 11 am) - Butter sculpture is an ancient Tibetan Buddhist art symbolizing impermanence, (a main tenet of Buddhism). Sculptures are usually destroyed anywhere from a day to a few years. They are displayed

on altars and shrines in monasteries or family homes. For our workshop, play doh will be used since it dries and becomes hard. Designs will include flowers, conch, jewels, and animals. Fri, June 3 (9 – 11 am) - Sand painting is another ancient Tibetan art form. A mandala is carefully constructed from dyed sand particles to represent particular esoteric, textual traditions of Buddhism. The most common substance used in the creation is colored sand. In ancient times, powdered precious and semiprecious gems were also used. We will use colored sand and learn the same techniques that the monks use to create yak, windhorse, snow lion and stylized fire designs to make your own lovely and interesting mandala. Both of these workshops will offer you a once in a lifetime opportunity to make unusual pieces for your home, or gifts. Just think of the pleasure they’ll bring ! Suggested donation for each workshop is $15, which will be collected the day of the event. To register for these workshops call the Seymour Center, 968-2070.

Celebrate the Seymour Gardens through Art Calling all artists, photographers and writers! Looking for 30 art pieces to represent your impressions of the entry gardens at the Seymour Center. Get your class involved, or create your own art. Sketch, photograph, paint, stitch - or write a poem. Your impressions will help celebrate a love of gardening and beauty. Submit art by Monday, July 25 to the RSVP office at the Seymour Center. Include your name, phone number, title of the art, media, for sale/not for sale. The Future is Now and We Need Your Help! Master Aging Plan 2012-2016

The number of people age 60+ is rapidly increasing all over the world. It is the fastest growing group in Orange County and people age 85+ are increasing at an even faster rate! We are very lucky that the Orange County Department on Aging is one of the finest. Its Seymour Center in Chapel Hill and Central Orange Senior Center in Hillsborough are widely recognized for their outstanding programs and services for both seniors and their families. We are starting to plan for the next five years beginning in 2012. YOU ARE NEEDED! A diverse group is needed to think creatively about the future. It will include representatives from: the senior community, caregivers, family members, boomers, faith communities, healthcare providers, civic groups, business community, non-profit agencies, and town governments in addition to Orange County government departments. The opportunity to create a plan for the next five years will make a tremendous difference in the quality of life for Orange County’s current seniors, as well as the future ones, and their families. When you want to take a trip, the first step is to decide where you want to go – and then you plan how to go there. Will you fly? Drive? Once you make a plan, you’re on your way to enjoying your trip! Creating the Master Aging Plan (MAP) will entail a similar process in that decisions will be made, and then a “path” will be found to reach the “destinations”. For more information and to become a part of this exciting opportunity to make a difference in thousands of peoples’ lives, contact Janice Tyler, Director, Orange County Department on Aging at 968-2071 or jtyler@co.orange.nc.us. All of us want to continue contributing in our lives – and this is a way to achieve that goal. MAP Focus Groups will be held throughout the County this summer. We hope that you will find the time to join us for a session:

New Legacy Wall The Seymour Center has a Legacy Wall where people’s names are mounted on clear plaques in their memory. The Friends of the Central Orange Senior Center have arranged to have one there, too. It will be designed and painted by the well-known local artist, David Stickel, and will bring pleasure to all who view it - especially when they remember the people whose memories were lovingly recognized. If you’d like more information, please call the front desk at the Central Orange Senior Center at 245-2015, and if you’d like to contribute to the Seymour Center Legacy Wall, call 968-2070.

30 Minutes! What can you do in 30 minutes that will make a huge difference in the way you feel? Could reduce your risk for diabetes? Could potentially reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease? Could reduce your risk of having a stroke by 24%? Reduce the risk of breast cancer by 20% in White and African American women? Reduce resting blood pressure? Reduce risk of Osteoporosis? Reduce risk of depression? Reduce overall body weight? The answer is walking! There is substantial research that shows walking at a brisk pace (3 - 4 mph) for 30 minutes 5 times a week can significantly reduce your risk for chronic health problems! Walking is an exercise that is easy to do anywhere! No gym memberships needed! And now is the perfect time to start a walking program. The days are longer, and the sun is shining – and malls are available if the temperature is high! Some tips to make your walk more enjoyable: - Walk with a friend. Chatting makes the time go faster - Listen to music with a good beat - Wear comfortable, supportive shoes - On hotter days, go to the mall. University Mall opens at 7:30 am. - Track what you do. This can help with motivation. If you are having trouble starting a walking program, a physical therapist may be helpful. Physical therapists have extensive knowledge about health conditions which allows them to evaluate and devise safe exercise programs to increase people’s endurance, including walking! Don’t you owe yourself 30 minutes at least 5 days a week to make YOU feel better?!! Additional offerings may take place in the evening and on weekends, if volunteers are available to support this effort. Future offerings such as Quicken, basic graphics, multi-media applications and genealogy will depend on the interests of the students and the skill sets of the volunteers.
