Senior Times

2014 is almost here! Have you accomplished your goals from last year? We, here at the Department on Aging, have had a very successful year in accomplishing our goal of making Orange County a great place to live and age well. The Master Aging Plan is our roadmap to the future. As I mentioned in last issue’s column our g n Agi r e t s new year started on July 1. We have a M and e 50 strategies that we are working t a d on this year and at the end of the Plan Up first quarter we, in collaboration with other county departments and community agencies, have started working on almost half of them. As we go to print we are interviewing for a full-time Mobility Manager to help older adults with available transportation resources and to develop avenues to fill transportation gaps throughout the county. Our Aging in Community housing series has been very successful and has brought forward many ideas of how we might do housing differently in the future in our community. As 2014 approaches we are working with our UNC School of Public Health Capstone team to put the finishing touches on Project EngAGE, our senior leadership training that kicks-off in January. If you are interested in being a part of this inaugural class please give me a call. And finally we have been working on implementing the communication plan that our Capstone Team from last year created. In the next issue of Senior Times we will unveil a new department logo and if everything goes according to plan we will be launching a new website and Facebook page. And this is just a sampling of our many projects! As always, I love hearing from you and sharing new ideas. I hope that you will get involved with our department and I look forward to seeing you at one of the Senior Centers.

FROM THE , OR T C E R I D

The flurry of activities that comes with the approaching holidays also abounds at our two senior centers – Central Orange Senior Center, Hillsborough and Seymour Center, Chapel Hill - each and every day. If you are looking for something interesting to do, check out all the programs and classes available. There is something new and different in almost every section of the paper. A couple annual events are currently taking place with the Medicare Prescription Drug Open Enrollment sign-up date (see page 12) and the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance-VITA Program under the RSVP Volunteer Opportunities section. Come see the Seymour Center Wellness Center with its new “facelift” and inquire about joining with a special incentive. If you’d like to talk with someone about services or age-related issues, call the Aging Transitions Help Line at 919-968-2087. I hope to see you “flurrying” around the Senior Centers at one or more of our many activities. Remember, it’s warm in the senior centers even though the weather outside may be “frightful”!

Come to a Senior Center for “One Stop Shopping” Social workers at both the Seymour Center and Central Orange Senior Center can help seniors, and disabled people, apply for a variety of financial aid services - such as SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program - formerly Food Stamps), Energy Assistance, and Medicaid – and perhaps a free cell phone. They can also help people complete an application to reduce their Orange County real estate taxes. Our Aging Transition social workers are able to discuss your questions and concerns about these programs in a confidential setting, and to complete the required paper work. This is called, “One-Stop Shopping”. You go to the senior centers for programs, meals, exercises, classes, fellowship, trips, etc – and you can apply for special assistance, too! To find out if you qualify for any of these programs, call the Aging Transitions Help Line at 919-968-2087, Mon - Fri, 9 am – 4 pm to make an appointment.

Do You Fit Your Car, or Does Your CARFIT You? CarFit is an educational program created by the American Society on Aging, and developed in collaboration with AARP, AAA, and the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA). The goals of the communitybased program are three-fold: 1) Help drivers improve the “fit” of their vehicles for safety and comfort. 2) Promote conversations about driving safety and the continued need for mobility options to keep people participating in the life of their communities. 3) Link adults with relevant, local resources that can help ensure they drive safely longer. CarFit uses a trained team, including occupational therapy practitioners, to assist drivers with items such as: determining a clear line of sight over the steering wheel, maintaining adequate space between the front air bag and steering wheel, determining proper seat belt fit and use, and maximizing mirror positions. Please call the Central Orange Senior Center to reserve a specific time to come for the session. 919-245-2015 Presenters: Jenny Womack MS OTR/L and guest CarFit technicians Fee: FREE Central Orange Senior Center (rear parking lot) Fri., Feb 14 (215000-02) 9 am – 12 noon

Tax Relief for Seniors and/ or Disabled Adults Did you know some people may qualify for the Homestead Exclusion which provides tax relief on their primary residence’s real estate taxes in NC? People age 65 and over, and those who are totally and permanently disabled (per a physician), and whose 2013 income was $28,600 or less may be eligible to exclude the first $25,000 of their home’s assessed value, or 50% of its value if that is greater. For example, if your house is assessed at $100,000, 50% would be excluded (since that is greater than $25,000) and you would pay taxes on an assessed value of only $50,000. If your 2013 income was $42,900 or less, you may qualify for the Circuit Breaker Tax Deferment Program. Neither program counts assets. The Disabled Veteran Exclusion allows Veterans who have a permanent and total disability and who had an Honorable Discharge to exclude up to $45,000 of their permanent residence’s assessment. If you’d like more information on any of these programs, contact the Orange County Tax Office at 919-245-2100, or go to www. orangecountync.gov/assessor/ exemption.asp. You may also call the Aging Transition Helpline at 919-968-2087 to make an appointment with a social worker to get help completing an application. The Tax Office has recently developed a user-friendly, web-based prequalification program that allows residents to input their information and determine if any of the most popular tax relief programs may be available. This tool may be accessed at the same website. In the event an application is denied, there is an appeal process.

COMMUNITY GIVING FUND

Bi-Lingual (Chinese/English) Volunteers Needed at the Seymour Center

The Orange County Community Giving Fund is an encompassing fund for Orange County government, so donations can be given to any department or County-sponsored activity through this fund. Cash, stocks, bonds, or real property gifts will be tax deductible and used for the purpose for which they are given and acknowledged as such.

The fund is managed by the Triangle Community Foundation and gives the public an opportunity to designate a tax deductible donation, which supplements the County’s annual budget. Orange County residents can designate part of their estate through the fund and specify the purpose for which the gift will be used. To learn more about the fund or to request an information packet, please visit the Orange County Community Giving Fund Web site at www.ocncgiving.org Note: The Friends of Central Orange Senior Center and the Friends of the Robert and Pearl Seymour Center continue to support the respective centers and welcome all levels of financial support which can be made directly to each organization.

Stay Up and Active

Nearly 1,000 older adults in Orange County call EMS each year after a fall. Stay Up and Active is a new initiative between the Orange County Department on Aging and Emergency Management Services (EMS), with support from the UNC Geriatric Education Center, the UNC Division of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy and the UNC Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention. This innovative program seeks to connect older adults to the services and resources they need to safely age in place due to falls or the risk of falls. Older adults who call EMS due to a fall, or are determined to be at high risk of falling, can receive a follow-up screening by EMS supervisors and be referred for evaluation and services through the Department on Aging. These services may include home safety education, home modifications, counseling, referral for primary or specialized health care, in-home services or other resource referrals. For more information about this program or to schedule a falls risk screening, contact Kim Woodward, Operations Director at Emergency Services (919-245-6133) or Mary Fraser, Aging Transitions Administrator at the Department on Aging (919-968-2087).

The Seymour Center is looking for volunteers who can help translate information to and from our growing group of Chinese-only speaking seniors. Any amount of help will be appreciated! We need volunteers to translate important announcements posted at the Senior Center, to visit with attendees to help answer their resource questions and to interpret their concerns to the Aging Transitions staff. If you are bi-lingual and interested in spending some time with Chinese-speaking seniors at the Seymour Center in Chapel Hill or the Central Orange Senior Center in Hillsborough, please call the Aging Transitions Help-line at 919-968-2087.

SONGS FOR SENIORS The Orange County Adult Care Home Community Advisory Committee is sponsoring a donation drive to collect new and gently used I-Pods for the Songs for Seniors Program which provides much loved music to low-income persons with dementia living in Orange County. Research has shown the positive impact of music on mood and well-being, especially for individuals dealing with memory problems. Over the summer several long-term care facilities and agencies serving orange county residents received training in the exciting Music and Memory program (http://musicandmemory.org) through the Orange County Long-Term Care Learning Collaborative. Many of these facilities and agencies are beginning to implement this program. Please consider donating an old or new I-POD to this wonderful project. Contributions can be brought to either of the Senior Centers or made out to Orange County Department on Aging/Songs for Seniors. For questions or more information, please contact the Aging Transitions Helpline at 919-968-2087

People age 60+ are eligible to eat the daily lunches funded by the federal government’s Older Americans Act, the Towns of Carrboro, Chapel Hill, Hillsborough, and the Orange County Department on Aging. Recycling Durable Medical Equipment Update The Aging Transitions Team would like to thank you for your continued generosity in donating gently used durable medical equipment for others to use. We routinely exchange more than 20 pieces of equipment each month, many of which go out to people who need them only temporarily or would otherwise have a difficult time affording them. At this time our storage unit is full and we do not need bedside commodes or walkers. We can always use tub seats, wheelchairs and rollators (4-wheeled walkers). Thank you! If you need a piece of equipment, please call the Aging Helpline at 919-968-2087.

Help Accessing Transportation Options Now Available As recommended in the 2012-2017 Master Aging Plan, the Department on Aging has secured funding to support a full-time “Mobility Manager” to help link older adults with available transportation resources, and to develop avenues to fill transportation gaps throughout the County. A two-year grant from the NC Department of Transportation was awarded to the Department on Aging this past summer. The new Mobility Manager should begin work in November. If you or an older adult you know are having trouble accessing public transportation, you can call the Department on Aging’s mobility manager on the Aging Transitions Helpline at 919-968-2087 or by email at agingtransitions@ orangecountync.gov

AGING IN COMMUNITY: PLANNING FOR OUR FUTURE DISCUSSION SERIES Our Aging in Community series opened with a standing-room-only crowd of over 250 folks who heard architect and visionary Sarah Susanka share her “not-so-big” philosophy. Over sixty folks stayed on for a facilitated discussion which generated ideas for future programs and community initiatives. We learned those present want to be able to live in single story homes that include universal design features, are energy efficient, and require little maintenance. Living in a natural environment that promotes social engagement and physical activity is preferred. Opportunities to be involved with members of all generations are important elements. Finally, discussants wish to live in a community that offers common spaces for gathering, quiet areas for contemplation, and access to public transportation. If you would be interested in learning about the full complement of discussion ideas from this session, please email Cherie Rosemond at crosemon@med.unc.edu. Keen interest in the following programs on Shared Housing and Elder Co-housing prompted us to move them from the Seymour Center to the larger “ballroom” space at the Central Orange Senior Center in Hillsborough. Turn-outs to hear Marianne Kilkenny who focused on Shared Housing, and Dene Peterson, who focused on Elder Co-housing were also substantial. Those present at the presentation began to form real plans for developing new housing possibilities in Orange County. The spring Aging in Community Series will kick-off at 6:30 pm on Tuesday, February 18th. Developer and social entrepreneur, Tim Carpenter, will speak about the Burbank Artist Colony, an elder community in Burbank, CA devoted to the arts. Winner of the 2011 James Irvine Leadership Award, Tim has been transforming the way people think about aging by turning affordable senior apartment communities into vibrant centers of learning, wellness and creativity. You can learn more about this initiative and register for this event by going to the Charleshouse.org website.

Johnson Intern Helps at Seymour Center The Seymour Center has a new intern! Emma Sternlof is a Connecticut native and a recent graduate of Trinity College. Like last year’s predecessor, Alli Little, and five previous interns, Emma is a member of the Johnson Intern Program. As part of this program, she lives in an intentional community with seven other young people who are working for social justice in the Chapel Hill/Durham area. Emma assists with Caregiver’s Day Out, various administrative tasks, and special events at the Seymour Center. She enjoys watching basketball, learning about American history, and exploring her new home and community. We are grateful to an anonymous donor, the Friends of the Robert and Pearl Seymour Center and the Town of Carrboro for supporting this program and are sure that Emma will be enriched as she learns about senior adults – and they about her! If you see Emma around, please say hello!

The Traveling Volunteer By RSVP Volunteer Annette Jurgelski

RSVP 55+ Volunteer Opportunities

RSVP volunteer Richard Tofte first visited a senior center in 2002. Living alone for the first time in years, he sought companionship at the Roxboro Senior Center and was immediately hooked on the programs, camaraderie and support. Forming friendships with other seniors helped him to reconcile with the idea of aging. “It is a marvelous opportunity to grow old with others,” he has discovered. Richard used the fitness equipment and started traveling with a group from that Center. Then he learned about a writing group at the senior center in Chapel Hill and went to investigate. “I fell in love with the place, the programs and the people,” he recalls. A budding drama group, the Prime Time Players, was delighted to find a volunteer who was a licensed electrician to help with lighting and stage management. When the Chapel Hill center moved to its present location in

2007, it became the Robert and Pearl Seymour Center. Richard was given a tour of the new facilities by Vicki Hill, the Orange County RSVP Volunteer Program Coordinator. In the course of showing him around the stunning new building, she encouraged him to formalize his volunteer work by signing up with RSVP. This was an experience that has changed his life. Encouraged by Vicki and fueled by his own enthusiasm, Richard found his volunteer match. He served a two-year term as a front desk volunteer at Seymour and still helps out at the front desk at the Central Orange Senior Center in Hillsborough. He is a member of the Program Advisory Committee, which evaluates and suggests future center programs. He serves as a board member for the Friends of Seymour Center and is a member of the Friends of Central Orange. One expertise that he brings is his knowledge of marketing, gained

Volunteer for Tax Season Do you want to help low- to middle-income clients with their taxes and make a difference in their lives? VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) is a free IRS service for eligible clients. The tax program provides a broad range of volunteer opportunities. Volunteers provide services at sites of their choice across Orange and Chatham counties. You may choose to serve as a volunteer tax preparer, quality reviewer or tax site manager (these three jobs require IRS training and testing provided by RSVP). Administrative volunteers serve as interpreters, computer specialists or statisticians. You may serve as a support coordinator to assist the client with the intake and checkout processes. You may want to volunteer for the Telephone Team to schedule appointments or make reminder calls. Bilingual volunteer support is useful on all levels. RSVP provides training in January for all VITA volunteer assignments. New VITA Volunteer Orientations will be held at the Seymour Center, 2551 Homestead Road, Chapel Hill on Wed, Dec 11, 1 - 3 pm. during employment at Pepsi Cola when Pepsi and Coke were in hot competition. Richard had always dreamed of traveling. In retirement, he has used travel opportunities offered by the senior centers to fulfill this dream. Since that early trip with the Roxboro group, he has taken senior center trips to Alaska, the National Parks, Greece, Italy and France. Richard has fond memories of his trips, including the one in which he was the sole male with eight women! Volunteering and traveling have been lifechanging experiences for him.

Are You Turning 65 in the Next Six Months?

Welcome to Medicare!

Are you in the “Boomer” generation? Are you turning 65, and eligible for Medicare? Are you feeling overwhelmed by all the information “bombarding” you? If so, come to a seminar offered by the Seniors’ Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP), and the Orange County Department on Aging. It will give you an overview of how to enroll in Medicare – including what Medicare Parts A, B, and D cover, as well as basic information on supplemental insurances. People turning age 65, both those who are retiring/retired as well as those who are continuing to work, should come learn about health coverage – as well as what they need to do to avoid penalties. General information on choosing a plan during this once in a lifetime “window” will be covered – including Medicare Advantage Plans (Pt C). For those with qualifying incomes, there will also be information on subsidies that help pay for Medicare Part B and Part D (Prescription Drug Plans) premiums. Come to a Medicare Information Seminar on December 5 at 1:00 pm at the Seymour Center. For more information contact Beverly Shuford at 919-245-4274.

Medicare Part D It’s Time to Make a Change! Mark your calendar for the Medicare Part D Annual Enrollment Period – which began on Oct 15 and ends on Sat, Dec 7. Beginning each Jan 1, most Medicare Part D prescription drug plans change what medications they cover, as well as their premiums. This may mean higher drug costs and/or premiums if you stay with your current plan for 2014. Find out if your current Medicare Part D plan will offer you the best prescription drug coverage, and be the most cost-effective, by coming to a FREE Medicare Part D check-up at an Orange County senior center. Trained Seniors’ Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) counselors will help you evaluate your Medicare Part D options – which may result in saving you money! Take advantage of this brief annual period until Dec 7 when you can change to a different Medicare Part D prescription drug plan without a penalty. However, people on subsidies can change plans throughout the year. To find out if you’re eligible for a subsidy, as well as answers to other Medicare or health insurance questions, schedule an appointment with an Orange County SHIIP counselor. Call 919-968-2070 for the Seymour Center in Chapel Hill, or 919-245-2015 for the Central Orange Senior Center in Hillsborough.

Need Help With Medicare Part D Prescriptions? Medicare beneficiaries with limited incomes and resources may be eligible for the federal Extra Help Low Income Subsidy (LIS) program. LIS can pay for all or part of a beneficiary’s Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plan’s (PDP) monthly premiums, annual deductible and all or part of any prescription copayments. To qualify for LIS, the monthly income must be limited to $1,436.25 for an individual ($1,938.75 for a married couple living together). Additionally, resources are limited to $13,300 for an individual ($26,580 for a married couple living together) – not including a primary residence or a vehicle. If you or someone you know may qualify for the Extra Help LIS program, please call the Aging Transitions line at 919-968-2087 for assistance in completing the online application form available at www.socialsecurity.gov, or to request a paper application. People can apply anytime during the year.

GENERAL INFORMATION Prerequisites: You must own an IBM-compatible Personal Computer with Windows XP or higher operating system. If you have little or no experience, your first course should be Computer Fundamentals. Many of the classes we teach run on Windows PCs as well as MacBooks. You may bring your MacBook to class and use it for any of the following classes: iPad, Facebook, Ancestry, Pinterest, Digital Photography, Picasa. Supplies: Students will need to purchase, and bring to class, a USB Flash drive with a GB of free space. For Computer Fundamentals, a 4 or 8 Gig drive is more than enough. Go to an office supply or big box store and buy their cheapest drive. Curriculum: In 3 monthly sessions, courses range from basics to more advanced topics and are tailored to seniors age 50 and above.

Schedule: Full courses run 12-16 hours, with 2 two-hour classes a week for 3-4 weeks. Workshops and Seminars vary. See the table that follows. Instruction: Classes enroll a maximum of 9 students, each with a computer and a comprehensive student guide. Experienced teachers, one for every 3 students, provide generous individual attention. You should plan to practice on a computer at home, about 1 hour for each hour in class. Classes for the Vision Impaired: The Seymour Technology Center is pleased to announce that it will be offering courses tailored to individuals with vision impairments that range from moderate to severe. In particular, we plan to offer the Computer Fundamentals course utilizing the screen reading program JAWS, enabling full use of the PC without reliance upon a mouse or a monitor. Beyond the PC, mobile technology is also becoming accessible to those with limited or no sight. Both the iPad and the iPhone have auditory capabilities making much of their capability usable via speech and hearing (for example, the sending and receiving of email). If you, or anyone whom you know, are interested, please contact Tim Miles at 919-969–3032 x228, or ocdisabilityawareness@gmail.com for further information. • • • • • • WINTER 2014 COURSES Computer Fundamentals using Windows 7 and 8 gives the beginner, or person with limited experience, the basic concepts, skills and tools such as: terminology, using the mouse proficiently, and mastery of the keyboard. Successful Strategies of Style for the Mature Woman Are you tired of wearing the same hairstyle you did a decade ago, but are afraid to change? Do you sometimes walk into a clothing store and feel as if everything is designed for women your daughter’s or granddaughter’s age? Or do you just want to know how to look and feel better about your appearance? The answers are not in the fashion magazines! In this introductory workshop, Gary Carden will share his unique definition of style and his individualized system of self-development through grooming and wardrobe. Carden, a Chapel Hill stylist with a “whole-person” approach to hair and beauty, has 40 years of experience coaching an eclectic group of clients of varying ages. Carden is also the author of Rhythms of Style. Called the “guru of grooming” by the Raleigh News and Observer, Carden started one of the first unisex salons in the nation. He is the creator of Rhythms, a contemporary treatise of style designed to harmonize one’s inner feelings with one’s outer self. For those who want feedback, please wear a favorite outfit to class. Thurs, Dec 5 - The Big Chill - The characters in this ensemble cast are in their 30s today, but back then they were “the Now Generation. Right Now: give me peace, give me justice, gimme good lovin’. For them, in the voluptuous bloom of youth, the ‘60s was a banner you could carry aloft or wrap yourself inside. A verdant anarchy of politics, sex, drugs and style carpeted the landscape. And each impulse was scored to the rollick of the new music: folk, rock, pop, R&B.” (Richard Corliss) What’s the movie about? Michael (Jeff Goldblum), who now writes for People magazine, tells us: “I don’t know, it’s about everything: Um... suicide, despair, where did our hope go? Lost hope, that’s it, lost hope.” (1983)-105 minutes- Directed by Lawrence Kasdan (US)  6:30 - 9:30 pm Films for January and February 2014 will be determined. From weddings to divorces, babies to funerals, new beginnings to happy endings, they share each moment in their lives with grace, determination, and perfectly coiffed hair. When tragedy strikes, it is in the familiar comfort of Truvy’s salon where they seek the solace and support that carries them through. In the world of Truvy’s local-homegrown beauty salon, six very different women come together to share their secrets, fears and love for one another while engaging the audience in hysterical and neighborly gossip. From weddings to divorces, babies to funerals, new beginnings to happy endings, they share each moment in their lives with grace, determination, and perfectly coiffed hair. When tragedy strikes, it is in the familiar comfort of Truvy’s salon where they seek the solace and support that carries them through. Orange Community Players (OCP) will launch their 2014 season with a production of Steel Magnolias February 13 - 16 at the Central Orange Senior Center. Audiences will have a choice of attending a traditional production with the Thursday night preview show at 7:30 pm, a Valentine’s Dinner Theater production on Friday or Saturday night beginning at 6:30 p.m., or a special dessert matinee on Sunday at 2 pm. Ticket prices are $15 for the Thursday preview, $35 for the dinner show on Friday and Saturday, and $20 for Sunday’s dessert

Senior Times matinee. Tickets may be purchased at Central Orange Senior Center or through the OCP website at www. ocpnc.com. Gift certificates are available for holiday purchase. This is a great gift to give especially for that “hard to buy” for person. *Cosponsored with the Friends of Central Orange and Orange Community Players. The radio cast and crew are winding up their last show and the show’s host, Wally, is about to ship off to Basic Training and what remains of WWII. But Wally’s soon - to-be bride is missing. The Christian Women’s Shoes on Tap insists on staging a military floor show and someone inadvertently disconnects the station from the power grid. What more can I tell you? The rest of the story remains to be “seen”. Donation requested: $7 Central Orange Senior Center
