Senior Times

2012 is almost here! It’s time to review what you have accomplished in 2011 and what you hope to do in the New Year. This is the year that I hope you will get involved in your local Senior Center, whether it be taking classes, expanding your mind, getting fit or volunteering in the many available projects. If you haven’t already gotten involved in the 2012-17 Master Aging Plan process, it is not too late. There is still room for you in a work group, and we welcome all ideas. This is the community’s aging plan and it must involve everyone…private and non-profit businesses, local government and most importantly, the people who are aging here in Orange County. This is your opportunity to assist in creating a plan for your future, as well as your children’s. If you have any questions about the process, please feel free to give me a call. I hope that you enjoy this issue of Senior Times. See you around the Senior Centers!

Fall Free Festivities!!

By Vicki Tilley PT, GCS The holiday season is fast approaching! This is a time to enjoy cooler weather, great food, and wonderful times with family and friends. It is also a time when our schedules get busier, our routines are different, our diets may change, and we do things that we don’t normally do. It may also be a time when the risk for falls may be a little higher because of the changes that come with the season. Falling is one of the leading causes of fatal injuries, and the second leading cause of non-fatal injuries for people age 65 and older. It is estimated that one-third of seniors over the age of 65, and one half of those over the age of 80, will fall at least once each year. Also, the incidence of multiple falls increases significantly if you fall more than once a year. The great news is that falls can be prevented!! Here are some tips to help prevent falls during this holiday season! Tips for Prevention of Falls: 1. Begin, or continue, to exercise regularly. Walking is a great activity and can help you get your shopping done! 2. Make sure you continue to take medications as prescribed and on your regular schedule. 3. Reduce clutter at home – including small rugs. 4. Visiting family is great, but watch out for toys and pets!! 5. Use walking aides if they’ve been recommended, especially if you are visiting in new places! 6. Wear prescribed eyewear correctly. 7. Sometimes, you might want to dress up, but wear comfortable, supportive shoes, especially if you do not wear heels often! 8. It is a special time of year. Be sure to drink moderately and responsibly. 9. Keep hydrated!! 10. If we have cold, rainy, snowy weather, watch for slippery surfaces - especially black ice!

We wish you Happy, Safe, Fall Free Holidays!

MAP Community kick-off was a Great Success and That’s Just the Beginning!

The Community Kick-off meeting for the Master Aging Plan (MAP) 2012 - 2017 was held on Oct 5 at the Seymour Center, and received coverage in the Daily Tar Heel, and the Chapel Hill News. 100+ people attended and identified 13 important issues. The group prioritized the issues, which resulted in five work groups that include all of the identified issues. The five work groups are: Health and Wellness, Navigation and Transportation, Housing Options, Aging in Place Supports, and Community Engagement. Each group will meet about five times through January. In addition to the participants, each one will have an Orange County Department on Aging staff person, and a master’s level student from UNC’s Gillings School of Public Health. All of the groups will be able to build on the background information gathered this past summer through surveys, interviews, US census data and community focus groups. They will also have information from the past MAPs – both their goals and accomplishments. This is an exciting time as we look at what now exists and what we’d like to accomplish in the next five years when the number of older adults will continue to increase – passing the number of children under the age of 18 in the county.

At the Community Kick-off meeting, participants selected work groups. They will utilize community people who are valuable resources, as well as the students who can access additional information for the groups – such as what do other locations have that’s innovative, and from which we might learn. To maximize the groups’ success, the participants will “dig into” the issues and come up with possible solutions. The groups’ reports will be compiled to create the 2012-17 Master Aging Plan, which will be ready for public comment by the end of March. We are very fortunate to have so much information on which to build so that work can be done efficiently and thoroughly in a short period of time. If you’d like to be part of a work group, please contact Janice Tyler, Director of the Orange County Department on Aging at jtyler@co.orange.nc.us and indicate your group choice. We welcome your involvement in the community’s plan for aging services in Orange County. Together we can accomplish great things.

Award-winning local photographer, Catharine Carter, took pictures of all the Town Treasures. It will honor these very special “Treasurers” who’ve been such an integral part of the community’s “heart”. The “Treasurers” honored this year are: Dr.

When you see these special photographs, you’ll come away from your “visits” with a greater knowledge of our local history, as well as an appreciation for some of the many people who’ve made this area so special.

Do You know Anyone Who’s Depressed?

Depression is very common in older adults. However, we are very lucky that a program is coming to Orange County which has proven results – and it’s fun! It’s called “Healthy Ideas”. There are four steps. (1) A person is screened and assessed for depressive symptoms; (2) Older adults and caregivers are educated about depression and self-care; (3) Referral and linkage to healthcare and mental health professionals; and (4) Behavioral activities. The last one is fundamental to“Healthy Ideas”. It empowers older adults to manage their depressive symptoms by engaging in meaningful, positive activities. By scheduling activities that bring pleasure or reduce stress, older adults with depression can improve their mood and ultimately decrease their depressive symptoms. In summary, people participate in rewarding activities, which leads to an improved mood, which leads to decreased depressive symptoms, which leads to increased enjoyment of the rewarding activities, etc. This program is being co-sponsored by the Orange County Department on Aging, Aging Transitions and the UNC School of Nursing. For more information, call the Aging Transitions Help Line at (919) 968-2087.

“Wind Stone” by Phil Hathcock provides the viewer with movement and subtle sounds reminiscent of the sounds of bamboo touching together driven by a soft gentle wind. Come see, and hear it in front of the Seymour Center.

Spring Forest Qigong – Weird, But It Works By Martha Hadden, RN and Spring Forest practitioner and certified instructor I was hurting from symptoms and side effects from disease and medicine when I tried this meditation. As a nurse steeped in Western Medicine, I did not believe, but started getting better anyway. My doctor was, and is, amazed. Now I would like to tell you about Spring Forest Qigong (SFQ) and offer you the healing this practice can afford. SFQ is a simple, powerful and effective Ancient Chinese meditation that compliments Western heath care and promotes physical and emotional healing. It combines Breathing, Mental Focus, Gentle Movement and Sound to balance energy and foster healing. The ancient Chinese people believed that stress caused energy blockages which caused illness. The Qigong teaching talks of stress coming from emotion, bad drugs, bad food, injury and weather changes. Removing the blockages allows energy to flow freely in the body and it will heal itself. Western medicine can show you scientifically the chemicals released during stress that eventually cause disease. We are only now realizing the benefits of integrating Western and Eastern medicine. The language is different, but I believe they are saying the same thing. I am a certified SFQ instructor and am also a Certified Psychiatric Nurse in Adult Mental Health. I come from Western medicine and use both to foster my healing. I invite you to join me for a new program of Spring Forest Qigong, starting on Thurs, Dec 1 – Jan. 26 (see the details under Wellness Classes on page 14).

The Time is NOW to Change Your Medicare Part D Plan

The Medicare Part D Annual Enrollment Period has changed! The 2012 Enrollment Period is NOW – Dec 7. Even if you currently have a Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plan, its premiums and/ or the drugs it covers could be changing beginning Jan 1. If that’s the case, you may be able to save money by changing to another plan for 2012. To find the most cost-effective prescription drug plan for you, come to one of the Orange County senior centers to meet with a trained Seniors’ Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) volunteer. You will get help evaluating your options and choosing the most affordable Part D plan for your needs. Everyone should

take advantage of this opportunity, which could help you save money and avoid penalties when enrolling in, or changing, plans. The exception is people on subsidies who can change plans any time during the year. Take the time to find out if you’re eligible! Please call (919) 968-2070 for the Seymour Center, or (919) 245-2015 for the Central Orange Senior Center to schedule your Medicare Part D personal appointment. When you come, be sure to bring your prescriptions. Appointments will end on Wed, Dec 7 – so act now! Are You Turning 65 Within the Next Six Months?

Are you in the “Boomer” generation who will be turning 65 and eligible for Medicare soon? Are you feeling overwhelmed by all the plans available? If so, come to the seminar offered by the Seniors’ Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) and the Orange County Department on Aging. It’s a Medicare Information Seminar on Jan 11 at 11 a.m. at the Seymour Center in Chapel Hill, and on Jan 12 at 11 a.m. at the Central Orange Senior Center in Hillsborough. It will provide you with an overview of Medicare Enrollment, coverage under Medicare Pt. A, B, and D, as well as basic

information on supplemental insurances. People turning age 65 soon, including retirees and those who are continuing to work, should come learn about health coverage once they turn 65 – as well as what they need to do to avoid penalties. General information on choosing a plan during this once in a lifetime “window” will be covered – including Medicare Advantage Plans (Pt. C). For those with qualifying incomes, there will also be information on subsidies that help pay for Medicare Part B and Part D (Prescription Drug Plans) premiums. A Bowl and a Roll

Free Tax Help for All Ages

SENIOR TIMES NEWS

RSVP 55+ Volunteer Viewpoint

By Annette Jurgelski, RSVP Volunteer

RSVP volunteers enter the program with a potpourri of talents that are applied in a variety of settings. One location, which has welcomed and used volunteers, is the Central Orange Senior Center, where many programs benefit from the skills and experiences of RSVP volunteers. Paul Larkin is a good example of a volunteer who uses a lifetime of experience to enrich the lives of others. A skilled chef and restaurateur, Paul delights in sharing his love of cooking with others. Last year he was the instructor/ coordinator for “Spanky’s Gang,” a cooking class for men. This fall his inspiration was responsible for “A Bowl and a Roll,” a biweekly session, which gave both men and women the opportunity to help, prepare and eat gourmet soup. Participants learned how to substitute dry goods from their cupboards for more expensive gourmet items and still have the results be an exotic treat for all to enjoy. In addition, they learned simple skills that can be used in their own kitchens. Paul was not born with a silver spoon, but he definitely had a spoon in hand early on. His parents and grandparents on both sides ran successful eateries where Paul was welcomed to visit and help. By the age of seven, he was stirring the homemade soup at his father’s restaurant in Wildwood, NJ. When workmen hit the door, they would holler out their order, “Hey Joe, a bowl and a roll!” For just 40¢, he would serve a hearty bowl of soup (25¢) and a roll (10¢) which left a 5¢ tip for the waitress. Two years later, he was promoted to ice cream scooper and stood on a wooden soda pop box to fill cones and cups for sweettoothed customers. Paul also worked as the “pot walloper,” scrubbing pots at the end of the day. Paul recalls learning the basics from his grandmother, who would invite him to taste her soup and then tell her what was in it. He retains this ability and feels that any good chef should be able to identify the ingredients in a dish by taste. Paul continued his on-the-job training by working parttime as a “sous chef” (cook’s assistant) while attending

Volunteer Sous Chefs Patty Smith, Ken Hall, Inge Snider and Georgie Bryant are busy assisting Master Chef Paul Larkin to create yet another masterpiece for the biweekly “A Bowl and a Roll” cooking show. After 45 minutes of washing, peeling, chopping, sautéing, boiling, instructing and learning, the chef serves up a delicious meal of hearty soup and homemade bread (bread by Ken Hall). “Yum,” says Kathy Porter (photographer, RSVP Director and professional taste tester).

high school and college. In 1964-65, he fulfilled his military obligation by serving as a cook at the army’s biological laboratory. After his discharge, he became Food and Beverage Director for a thousand-room hotel near Disney World and worked with a series of European chefs. This experience, plus a three-year stint as vice president of Food and Beverage for Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey Circus, prepared him to work as a recruiter of chefs and hotel managers for huge mega resorts built in the 1980s and 1990s. He still acts as a consultant to the restaurant and hotel business. A year ago, Paul’s wife, Angela, accepted a respiratory therapist position at UNC Hospitals, and the couple moved to this area. They love Hillsborough, Paul says, and hope to make it their permanent residence and eventual retirement home. When Paul is not busy with his consulting business, he plans to continue sharing his knowledge of food preparation and creating culinary delights with his programs’ participants at the Central Orange Senior Center. So, look for “Spanky” in the spring, and bon appétit! Volunteers 55+ are invited to join RSVP and “Teach Your Specialty” at an Orange County Senior Center. Contact RSVP (919) 968-2056 to explore this and other rewarding volunteer opportunities.

Concerned About Your Memory? Come to the Seymour Center on Tues, Nov 15, National Memory Screening Day for a FREE confidential Memory Screen for individuals concerned about memory loss with the objective for the event of early detection and intervention. Memory screenings are important; it can be a significant first step toward finding out if a person may have a memory problem. A screening is not used to diagnose any particular illness and does not replace consultation with a qualified physician or other healthcare professional. It can check a person’s memory and other thinking skills. A screening can indicate if someone might benefit from a more complete medical visit. It is very important to identify the cause for any memory loss. That is why a person should follow up for a complete checkup with a qualified healthcare professional. Some memory problems can be readily treated, such as those caused by vitamin deficiencies or thyroid problems. Other memory problems might result from causes that are not currently reversible such as Alzheimer’s disease or other dementias. In general, the earlier the diagnosis, the easier it is to treat one of these conditions. Screenings will be offered in individual appointments from 10 am – 4 pm by calling (919) 968-2070.

Origins of the Civil Rights Movement in World War II “When most Americans think of the Civil Rights Movement, we have in mind a span of time beginning with the 1954 Supreme Court’s decision in Brown v. Board of Education, which outlawed segregated education, or the Montgomery Bus Boycott and culminated in the late 1960s or early 1970s. We may have in mind vivid pictures of protesters sitting at lunch counters being assaulted by irate whites, or children being attacked by police dogs, or Martin Luther King, Jr delivering his ‘I have a dream’ speech. Through the power of television, radio, and the daily newspaper, Americans absorbed images of hopeful, disciplined, and dedicated young people shaping their destinies. But this drama of the mid-20th century emerged on a foundation of earlier struggles. The modern civil rights movement is rooted in the era of World War II and the black freedom struggle for victory over fascism abroad and racism and white supremacy at home.” Kenneth Janken is a professor of AfroAmerican studies and adjunct professor of history at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. He is the author of Walter White: Mr. NAACP, which is a biography of one of the most prominent African American leaders of the first half of the twentieth century. He also wrote a biography on an influential African American thinker, titled Rayford W. Logan and the Dilemma of the AfricanAmerican Intellectual. He is currently working on a history of the Wilmington Ten and the conflict around school desegregation in that city in the 1970s. Fee: FREE Seymour Center Mon, Jan 9 (313037-01) 1 – 2 pm

A Day at the Palace Journey with us to New Bern, North Carolina to Tryon Palace! The centerpiece of our historic site was also the grandest public building in all the colonies. Royal Governor William Tryon and his family brought architect John Hawks from London to design and build the Georgian-style structure. Completed in 1770, Tryon Palace served as the first permanent capitol of NC and home to the Tryon family. Surrounding the Palace are several historic homes and buildings that help tell the story of life in historic New Bern, including the Dixon House, Stanly House, and the Hay House. Tryon Palace features 16 acres of gardens and is the reconstructed colonial capitol of NC. Today, the Palace lives on as a testament to history, community and rebirth. The new NC History Center has revolutionized visitors’ encounters at the state’s premier historic site and sets a new standard for the museum experience. All attractions and lunch are included.
