2017
From the cover artist Remembrance and celebration of events in our lives inspire the cover and endsheet designs for our 20162017 Xavierite. The ribbons theme reflects how in life we don't know when any moment will be our last, so it is crucial to live every day as a celebration. The ribbons represent our experiences here at Xavier and how those memories will flow indefinitely, even beyond graduation. As you look at them, I hope you will also see the ribbons as symbols of how we should live our lives in the moment. Leland Johnson Class 2018 Art major

Founder Saint Katharine Drexel Following in her footsteps Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament celebrate 125 years
Shoes worn by St. Katharine Drexel
The motherhouse in Bensalem holds the tomb for St. Katharine, who established the religious order in 1891, died in 1955 and was canonized in 2000. St. Katharine, the second American-born saint, left her prominent Philadelphia family to found the order and poured her $20 million fortune into it. St. Katharine's remains will be moved to the Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul in Center City when the property is sold in 2017.
She was the equivalent of an American princess, born into the privileged family of a wealthy Philadelphia banker and philanthropist. She could have lived her life in the lap of luxury, oblivious to the suffering of others. But instead, throughout the 1890’s and the first half of the 20th century – long before taking up the cause of racial equality came into vogue – St. Katharine Drexel was at the forefront of efforts to improve the lives of others. St. Katharine was at the forefront of efforts to educate African-Americans and Native Americans with an eye toward helping them to develop their own leadership and selfdetermination. Her schools were always open to all faiths; and the nuns who followed her lived among the poor they served.

Despite the many obstacles placed in their path, including strong opposition from whites, by 1942 the Sisters were operating black Catholic schools, convents and mission centers in some 13 states. So extensive was her influence in the Black, rural areas of New Iberia, St. Martinville and other Acadiana parishes that she is often referred to as the “Patron Saint of South Louisiana.” St. Katharine’s presence was also felt in urban New Orleans, where the Sisters not only opened a Catholic high school and several elementary schools, but also established Xavier University of Louisiana, which was to become the capstone of her educational system. Originally a coeducational secondary school, Xavier evolved into a teacher’s college and by 1925 had achieved full university status. A College of Pharmacy, now one of only two pharmaceutical schools in the state, was added two years later. The stresses and strains of building a nationwide network of schools for black and Indian children were hard on St. Katharine. The never-ending work and awesome responsibilities that she shouldered for more than a half-century finally took their toll in 1935 when she suffered a nearfatal heart attack. For 20 years she was confined to the infirmary at the Motherhouse in Bensalem, Pa., where she is said to have spent most of her remaining waking hours in prayer and meditation. St. Katharine died on March 3, 1955. She was officially canonized a saint of the Roman Catholic Church in October of 2000 by Pope John Paul II. She is only the fifth American to have been canonized and only the second American-born Saint.

We are One Xavier...students, administrators, faculty and staff march to protest the government's ban on Muslims and other refugees.
Xavier students assisted with community cleanup efforts February 2017 after a tornado in New Orleans East.
“We are One Xavier” week, a university-wide, student initiative that ran started the weekend, Sunday February 12 with support from the SGA, the offices of Academic and Student Affairs, and faculty across campus. During this week, right in the middle of Black History month, we celebrated our unity as a university dedicated to the development of future leaders and the creation of a more just and humane society. The idea for this week came from members of the Muslim Student Association after the recent Executive Order directly affecting Muslims originating from seven countries as well as refugees from around the world. They were inspired by our university’s history of struggle against discrimination, and President Verret’s letter, that he concluded by reminding us that we are one Xavier and that a burden to one of us is a burden to us all. The week kicked off with “We the People March” and featured at least one special event each day: Monday evening started with a special featured speaker and ended Friday with a student panel and prayers.
Xavier University of Louisiana students helped with recovery in Baton Rouge from recent catastrophic flooding in the state. Volunteers gut flooded houses or work at a Red Cross shelter in August 2015.

The Sanguinarian Id by L.M. Labat L. M. Labat, author of The Sanguinarian ID This 2016 Xavier University graduate, L. M. Labat stems from New Orleans, Louisiana. Labat’s debut novel The Sanguinarian ID, a sci-fi/horror adventure, reflects the struggles of a broken family and surviving life-threatening events

A “sanguinarian” is defined as “active vampirism,” while the “id” is the part of the psyche responsible for unabashed indulgence. Labat found refuge within the arts while delving into the fields of medicine, psychology, and the occult. While double-majoring in psychology and art at Xavier University she was able to combine her love for illustrating and a passion for literature, to cope with endless nightmares as well as hone in on artistic techniques. The Sanguinarian ID takes place in World War II-era Europe. The setting of this novel made the first book signing event for Labat a natural, for it was held at the World War II Museum located on Magazine St. in March 2016. It was a notable success. Although her grandfather, the stalwart New Orleans Jazz trumpeter Lionel Ferbos, passed at the age of 103, missing her novel’s debut by 18 months, Labat has decided in remembrance of him, that a future edition of The Sanguinarian ID will naturally feature New Orleans, Louisiana as its location. From confronting the past to facing new shadows, this author gladly invites audiences into the sci-fi/ horror of The Sanguinarian Id.

Given that he is neither married nor has children of his own, Farai Caldwell ’11 would seem an unlikely choice to pen a children’s book entitled, Mommy and Daddy Met at XULA. And yet ... Just recently published through his own company, Farai Art, the book follows the story of two Xavier lovebirds as told through the eyes of their beautiful daughter. Mommy and Daddy Met at XULA celebrates the special love that Xavier graduates have for their alma mater and also helps to familiarize children with college at an early age.
