These lines of business currently comprise: n Marine communication- and navigation systems, n Integrated machinery control and n Monitoring systems,

2

n Marine electrical power and drive systems n Magnetic systems.

In the area of magnetic systems the scope of supply and services offered by SAM Electronics to navies and shipyards world-wide includes advanced degaussing systems for deployment on surface combatants, mine counter measure vessels, submarines and auxiliary vessels.

In addition to degaussing systems the planning, design and delivery of fixed and mobile magnetic ranges and of demagnetisation facilities for ships and ship equipment complete SAM Electronics´ comprehensive range of supplies and services in the area of magnetic systems.

General Sea mines equipped with magnetic influence firing systems are effective and inexpensive underwater weapons. They are easy to deploy in large numbers against naval and commercial ship targets and constitute a formidable threat, both physically and psychologically.

Reduction of Magnetic Interference Field by Degaussing

Thus effective measures for magnetic signature management are required to protect vessels against the threat from sea mines, fitted with modern magnetic influence firing systems. To this date, advanced state of the art degaussing systems are the most effective means of ship protection against modern sea mines. They reduce the magnetic interference field of vessels to acceptable levels, as required for the fulfilment of their mission. This effectively limits their endangerment during combat and in wartime cruising.

Degaussing System

System Features of DEG COMP MOD 2 The SAM Electronics degaussing system „DEG COMP MOD 2“ is a versatile degaussing system, suitable for deployment on all classes of naval vessels. It is capable to compensate the permanent and induced and - in it´s maximum configuration also the eddy current magnetic interference fields of naval vessels to specified target signatures. It´s non magnetic design allows deployment also on Mine Countermeasure Vessels (MCMV) and on non magnetic submarines.

The „DEG COMP MOD 2“ system is a modular, decentralised, computer controlled degaussing system, which works on the „sum current principle“ i.e. at any given moment during operation of the system, each degaussing coil carries the aggregate current load as required for compensation of the permanent, induced and - if required - the eddy current content of the magnetic interference field. This necessitates separately controllable power supplies for the individual degaussing coils, which are provided by independent power amplifiers.

Navigation System

Gyro Compass

The system features selectable automatic control in master - slave mode, with inputs coming either from a triaxial magnetic probe system or from the ship´s navigation system. In emergency mode, control can alternatively be effected by manually entering the relevant control data. The system offers a user- friendly Man Machine Interface (MMI) with data input and monitoring via display , keyboard and softkeys. Hierarchically organised menus for interactive control are provided for the different operational modes.

System Configuration Degaussing Control Unit (DCU)

Bridge Control Unit (BCU)

Heart of the system is the computer based Degaussing Control Unit (DCU), which accommodates the MMI and interfaces to the other main system components. For control and monitoring, standard interfaces are provided.

In addition to the MMI, which is an integral part of the DCU, and serves as the primary control and monitoring post for the degaussing system, the bridge control unit is provided either as an option for remote control and monitoring or as a fully redundant back up facility to the MMI. In a variant the BCU is also available as a small LCD panel for the manual input of the navigation data and alarm indication. The units are intended for integration into the bridge control console.

In automatic mode the DCU receives the actual magnetic earth field data either from the magnetic probe system or by calculations derived from a geophysical model as data base and inputs from the vessels´ navigation system. To this end the DCU is equipped with a suitable memory, which contains the algorithms of the geophysical model for generation of the magnetic earth field data. In emergency mode the navigation data can be input manually. At any given moment the system automatically calculates the required sum current for each degaussing coil, which is composed of the permanent-, induced- and in it´s maximum configuration also the eddy current content.

Magnetic Probe System

The Magnetic Probe System serves for acquisition of the magnetic earth field, related to the vertical, athwartship, and longitudinal directions of the vessel. The probe is aligned to the vessel´s coordinates by means of software feature, forming part of the DCU software.

Degaussing Control Unit

On the basis of this calculation each degaussing power amplifier generates the required DC sum current to feed the related connected coil. Menu controlled interactive communication between the user and the DCU is effected via a display with attached keyboard and functional softkeys. Error messages are generated in case specified limits are exceeded, or undesired operational conditions prevail.

Degaussing System System Configuration Degaussing Power Supply Depending on the respective type of vessel the DEG COMP MOD 2 system makes use of two different coil supply concepts: n The centralised coil supply concept, which is intended for vessels having a low power demand per coil e.g. MCMVs and non magnetic submarines. This allows the power amplifiers for the individual degaussing coils to be arranged in a centrally located amplifier cabinet.

n

The decentralised coil supply concept, which is intended for vessels having a higher power demand per coil e.g. ferromagnetic surface combatants and supply vessels. They make use of individual Degaussing Power Amplifier Units (DPU) arranged near the connected coil.

Both power supply concepts use a family of current controlled amplifiers of different configuration and power rating, each suitable for the direct supply of the respective sum current to the connected degaussing coil.

systems for ferromagnetic vessels, utilising the decentralised power supply concept, use a number of degaussing power amplifier units (DPU) to energise the connected degaussing coils. The DPUs are designed as stand alone equipment. The units are of identical design, and deviate only with regard to their power rating.

The robust and compact power amplifiers intended for use with the centralised power supply concept are available in the power range between 60 W and 500 W. They are designed as modular plug – in units, and accommodated in a common amplifier cabinet. Degaussing

Typical output power ratings are in the area of 3 to 5 KW per unit. Depending on the coil design maximum power ratings of approx. 9 KW are feasible for standard 440 V mains. A group of DPUs is interfaced to an upstream section transformer serving for voltage adaptation and potential separation. Each DPU interfaces to the Degaussing Control Unit for commands, set values and for a feed back of the actual values. The DC output power of the DPUs feeds the connected coils via smoothing chokes.

Modes of Control Automatic mode Control of the degaussing system is normally effected in automatic mode, using the magnetic earth field data related to the ships co-ordinates as control parameters. For automatic mode of control, the DCU accepts two freely selectable independent inputs for the magnetic earth field data coming from separate data sources: n Magnetic earth field data from the magnetic probe system n Magnetic earth field data derived from calcu lations on the basis of a geophysical model and the actual geographic ships position, heading and roll and pitch angles, which are obtained from the vessel´s navigation system.

By assigning individual coefficients to each power supply unit rated set values for compensation of the induced and permanent magnetization are established. By summation of the rated set values for the induced and permanent content, common

set values are derived, which serve as reference for the output sum currents of the power supply units. The set values will be generated individually for each power supply unit employed.

The operator may select each of the data sources as master, while the other will automatically be configured as slave. During operation both sources are constantly monitored for plausibility. In case of a non admissible deviations between the two data sources, the system initiates a self - test for fault identification and selects the correct data source, which will automatically be converted to master. The faulty data source will be disconnected. When automatic mode is selected the system automatically provides the set values for the power amplifiers on the basis of the actual earth field data - obtained from either of the two data sources - under consideration of compensation coefficients.

Degaussing System Modes of Control

In cases where eddy current compensation is also required, the additional output sum current of the power amplifiers is calculated in the same manner as described for the permanent and induced portions. The compensation coefficients will be established during a first calibration ranging of the vessel or after check rangings during its service life. The actual operating data of each power amplifier unit, such as the output voltage and output current are continuously sensed and transmitted back to the DCU. These actual data are monitored and compared with the set values. In case of inadmissible deviations, the

DCU generates alarms for presentation on the display of the degaussing control unit and on the bridge control unit.

Manual Mode The manual mode is intended as a back-up for the automatic mode, in the event that the probe and the navigation system are out of order. In this mode the DCU receives the information concerning position and heading of the vessel by operator input via the MMI. The DCU calculates the required coil currents on the basis of the geophysical model and provides setting data to the power amplifiers same as in automatic mode.

Advantages of DEG COMP 2

In comparison to conventional degaussing systems the SAM Electronics degaussing system DEG COMP MOD 2 offers the following system inherent advantages : n Optimised power consumption by the application of the sum current principle i.e. the use of common coils for compen sation of the vessels total magnetic interference field. n Reduced quantity of coil cables and subsequent reduction of weight and cost for cables and cable installation. n Improved system reliability, availability and maintainability due to increased numbers of independent coil amplifiers and independent control sources. n Improved capability for integration due to small dimensions of the system components and the possibility to use independent control data sources. The application of the magnetic probe system can be deleted if the installation of the tri-axial probe is not feasible - as on submarines - and the function of the probe is replaced by the geophysical model and support from the navigation system. n Improved capability for magnetic cali bration of the Degaussing system during ranging. Input of coefficients at the MMI of the Degaussing Control Unit instead of wiring changes at the Degaussing switch boxes of conventional systems.
