From jazz to creole cuisine, New Orleans culture is hotter than ever.

MILESTONES

10 Years After Katrina, New Orleans Welcomes You B Y K AT H Y F I N N

for ne a r ly 300 y e a rs La Nouvelle Orleans has treasured its origins and worked to preserve its diverse cultural legacy. In the past decade, the city has shown that it will not let adversity change its course. In contrast to the horrifying scenes that were broadcast worldwide 10 years ago after Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans today stands as a model for disaster recovery. Southwest Airlines pitched in with the ongoing efforts last January, when 250 of the airline’s employees and partners joined Habitat for Humanity in the Lower Ninth Ward for a neighborhood revitalization event. And though these types of restoration efforts continue in some residential areas, the many appealing attributes of the core city are not only intact but have grown. Upgraded streetcar lines carry riders from historic Uptown neighborhoods to downtown and riverfront attractions, and to beautiful City Park, home of the New Orleans Museum of Art and sprawling botanical gardens. The lacey iron balconies and centuries-old

architecture of the French Quarter, as well as the stately mansions of the Garden District, are as splendid as ever. “Everything visitors loved about New Orleans is still here, but it has evolved, in many ways, for the better,” says Kim Priez, senior vice president of tourism for the New Orleans Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB). She points to the runaway popu l a r it y of t he ever-expanding National World War II Museum in the Warehouse District as one example, and cites a big increase in local eateries as another. Overnight accommodation options also have increased. One of the newest of the downtown-French Quarter choices is the AC Hotel by Marriott, occupy-

ing a historic building near Bourbon Street with sweeping views of the city. Ingrid Palomo-d’Aquin, account director for the hotel, says the city is a good fit for AC because New Orleans has a strong European vibe. “AC appeals to travelers who have experienced the European way of life and enjoy it,” she says. The CVB’s Priez says that the 9.5 million people who visited New Orleans last year and the $8.6 billion they spent du ring their stays reflect the strength of the local recovery. Noting that both numbers topped all previous h ighs, she says: “A cit y that had no idea where it was going to be 10 years ago has now exceeded all its visitation records.” J A Z Z P H OTO : F OTO L U M I N AT E L L C / S H U T T E R S TO C K . The Evolution of All-Inclusive The new Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos blends local style with a stunning setting to create an authentic guest experience. B Y L I S A L AC H

I in the age of all-inclusive mega resorts, is it possible to find a truly authentic vacation experience? Creators of the new Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos say yes. To reflect the particular flavor of Los Cabos in the new resort, Hyatt Ziva contracted local architects and designers, and paid special attention to all the things that make the destination unique for visitors. The result is an authentic space that showcases ocean views, whale watching and local style throughout. “Mexico isn’t a destination where every place feels the same,” says Kevin Froemming, executive vice president and chief

marketing officer for Hyatt All-Inclusive Resorts. “Los Cabos is different than Playa del Carmen, and Puerto Vallarta is different than Cancún. We create an experience that focuses on the strengths of the destination.” One of the most spectacular aspects of Hyatt Ziva Los Cabos is the observation deck, which is outfitted with highpowered telescopes that take advantage of the resort’s vantage point above the Pacific Ocean. During the day, guests can use the telescopes to spot humpback whales that migrate through the area from December through April, and on clear nights, stargazing from the deck is unbeatable. The resort also captures the unique flavor of Los Cabos with its one-of-akind sports bar that is themed to reflect the spirit of the 1968 Olympics—the last time the Games were held in the country. “It was an interesting period in time,” Froemming says. “The older guests will remember and the younger guests will get a little piece of history. It’s something everyone will enjoy.” The new resort has 12 restaurants, including Spanish, French, Italian and Mexican cuisine, among others. Froemming recommends the many outdoor dining options. “It’s very comfortable with cool breezes in the evenings and you can still feel the sand in your toes and see the beach,” he says. Speaking of the beach, Hyatt Ziva boasts one of the best in Los Cabos. Though the beaches in the area are not generally swimmable, this one is a picturesque stretch of white sand where sun-seekers can spread out and relax. “Even when the resort is full, it doesn’t feel crowded. There is plenty of space for everyone,” Froemming says.

Dress to Impress Whether you’re invited to a faraway wedding or you’re the stars of the show, here are expert tips on what to wear for the big day. B Y E M I LY H O WA L D S E F T O N

dressing for a destination wedding is a tricky business. You’ve got the spatial limitations of a suitcase and the overarching conundrum of finding fashions that are the perfect blend of breezy and beautiful. From beach chic to seaside sophistication, wedding experts weigh in on the best styles for brides, grooms and their guests at destination “I Dos.” FOR THE BRIDE If the picture you’ve had in your head since the moment you decided on a destination wedding includes a long, gauzy gown that softly blows in the wind while your hair frames your face in celeb-worthy waves, think again. brides away from flowing frocks in favor of something a little less prone to unwanted wafting. “There’s a lot of breeze here,” says Lisbeth Cruz, a wedding specialist with Live Aqua Cancún and Fiesta Americana Condesa Cancún. If you’re set on a full skirt, ask a tailor to sew coin-like

just use a lighter fabric.” Silk, cotton, chiffon, charmeuse and organza are popular options, while tulle, satin and beading are best left at the bridal boutique. The right hair and makeup also play a major role. “We’ve seen a lot of ladies fight their long hair in the middle of a ceremony,” says Cruz. “It’s best if it’s up.” Schedule an appointment with the hair and makeup team at your resort and try styles that speak to your personality. Silvia Gutierrez, a romance expert with the Grand Fiesta Americana Coral Beach Cancún, encourages brides to use local technicians simply so they don’t have to worry about the ramifications of the elements. “Things are different here because of the humidity,” she says. “Our specialists know what products

and makeup to use so that [your look] doesn’t change with the heat.” A good tip for staying put together in the heat and humidity is to use airbrush makeup. One thing that should change, however, is your footwear. Brides often opt for sandals during the sandy portion of the ceremony, only to slip into strappy stunners for the reception. For a beach ceremony, Cruz recommends brides avoid ankle straps. “When the bride is about to walk down the aisle and she stops to take her shoes off . . . if someone needs to help her, it’s usually not very pretty,” she says. If you plan to avoid shoes altogether, Samantha Landry, a concierge with Weddings by Funjet, encourages brides to consider foot jewelry.“It is a beautiful option to still have something on your feet, while not having to worry about sinking in the sand.” J E N N Y YO O D R E S S : J J I G N O T Z P H O TO G R A P H Y

FOR THE GUYS While the bride’s gown is often a decades-long fantasy in the making, the groom’s attire is primarily dependent on the formality of the wedding. Aaron Comes, owner of the premier custom suiting store Frederick Lynn Haberdasshere in Chicago, encour-

ages grooms to eschew tuxes for lighter fabrics, and to try to complement the bride’s dress as much as possible. “I recommend a stunning jacket, a cream or white pant, white shirt and a clean tie,” he says. “For warmer weather, you have to choose a nice lightweight fabric that won’t wrinkle, maybe a silk or linen or mohair blend.” Comes also invites men to play around with color— choose, say, a pink or purple sport coat—to match the tropical setting. He suggests that footwear be casual, such as a driver shoe or loafer without socks, or a leather flip flop. “I like guys to stand out,” he says. “It’s their big day and they should feel like themselves and have some fun.” FOR THE GUESTS Guests should also heed direction from the formality of the wedding. Just because you’re under the sun, doesn’t mean sundresses and sandals are accepted apparel. “Make sure your attire is elegant enough to look like you are a member of the wedding group, not a tourist onlooker,” says Landry. Plan to wear something light, airy and comfortable. And remember, chic sun hats are welcome. “Think Kentucky Derby, but a little less extreme,” says Landry. ■

On my first day

in Punta Cana, I checked into my deluxe suite at the Barceló Bávaro Palace Deluxe and rushed to the beach. My gaze fixated on powdery white sands as far as the eye can see and coconut trees too tall for my camera frame. I got what all the fuss was about. The surprise? Discovering a side of this resort region that I didn’t expect: nature reserves hiding Taíno caves and sinkholes, a lush countryside with cacao and horse farms, colorful local beaches, award-winning restaurants and an exhilarating nightlife. It’s the Dominican Republic you might otherwise miss.

christopher columbus first set foot in Dominican Republic in 1492, so it may come as a surprise that Punta Cana has only been around for 44 years. In 1971, tourism mogul Frank Ranieri purchased a large swatch of land in the area, with plans of opening the Punta Cana Club hotel. Nautical charts indicated that his land was located in Punta Borrachón (or Drunken Point). As a more suitable and marketable name, Ranieri decided on Punta Cana in honor of the “cana palma,” an endemic palm tree abundant on his property. Today, Punta Cana is synonymous with Dominican Republic, if not the Caribbean. Thirty miles of near-continuous white sand beaches, flanked by towering coconut trees and all-inclusive hotels, make it the quintessential island escape. Among the region’s top destinations, it’s easily accessible thanks to nonstop charter flights from major US cities, including Chicago, Milwaukee, Minneapolis and St. Louis. The newly-expanded Punta Cana Airport is the second largest in the Caribbean, receiving over 2 million passengers a year. THIS PAGE:

TAÌNO TRADITIONS For travelers who want to wander beyond the beaches, there are more protected parks and caves along the eastern coast of Dominican Republic than in any other part of the country. Don’t miss Scape Park at the southern tip of Punta Cana. Its

247-acre forest is home to ancient caves once used by the Taíno—Dominican Republic’s first inhabitants—and now open to the public for swimming or spelunking. The “cenotes,” or sinkholes, are the highlight here. “We believe it’s the God of fertility,” says Omar Rodriguez, in charge of marketing for Scape Park, explaining an original pictograph found on the limestone wall inside the newly-opened Cenote Indígena Las Ondas. An outdoor Taíno exhibit keeps hikers informed along the trail leading to the mouth of the cave, where a steep wooden staircase takes visitors into an underground, waterfilled chamber once used for Taíno rituals. Arguably one of the most beautiful places in Scape Park—and all of Punta Cana—is the open-air Hoyo Azul, or blue hole, at the foot of a 246-foot limestone cliff. The only thing standing between you and this freshwater haven are a suspension bridge, a medicinal plant trail and an orchid garden. Funjet Vacations Senior Vice President Jorn Kaae says Scape Park was one of the highlights of his recent trip to Punta Cana. “My daughter and I especially loved the cenotes—their breathtaking beauty was unlike anything we had ever seen before,” says Kaae. TIP: Travel one hour south of Punta Cana and spend the afternoon in the tiny clifftop fishing village of Boca de Yuma, where you can spelunk in the pictogramfilled Cueva Berna, at the entrance of the National Park of the East. More lovely lagoons can be found at the 1,500-acre private Indigenous Eyes Ecological Reserve. “Anyone can come and visit the reserve for a fee, but it’s free for our guests,” says Giselle Gonzalvo, public relations supervisor at the Westin Puntacana, as we hike through the lush subtropical forest. “And the amazing thing is the beach is right on the other side of the park,” she adds. The reserve’s network of trails leads to 12 freshwater lagoons fed by an underground river. The Taíno believed these lagoons resembled eyes because of their oval shape, hence the park’s name. One of the most beautiful of these, also called Ojos Indígenas, is a jade and turquoise color and can be reached after a 20-minute hike. If you can pull yourself away from this paradise pool, head across the street from the reserve to visit Puntacana Ecological Foundation, an awardwinning nonprofit working to mitigate the effect of development in the Punta Cana region. Walk around the organic garden, which area restaurants use to source their produce. Better yet, donate some of your vacation time to the foundation, and help preserve Punta Cana’s natural sights and resources.

All ages can be treated like rock stars, with tons of activities— including a rock wall, exceptional golf and a kids’ club. And with special events from chart-topping artists, you may even run into a real rock star.

Grand Palladium Palace Resort In the heart of Bávaro on Cortecito Beach, this resort is a great choice for couples or families. Try the unique twolevel loft suites. Part of a larger Palladium complex, the resort offers guests access to the restaurants and bars throughout the grounds. The Mini Club has tons of activities for the littlest guests, and teens can hang out at the Black & White Junior Club.

Riu Palace Macao Tucked within the large Riu Resort complex on Arena Gorda beach, Riu Palace Macao is exclusively for adults. Recently renovated rooms have a contemporary flair. The buffets are plentiful and the a la carte dining ranges from Italian to fusion cuisine. But the real draw is the wide beach with plenty of shade provided by palm trees, and the sparkling sea just beyond.

Iberostar Grand Bávaro Facing a glorious stretch of Playa Bávaro, this resort boasts butler service, upscale furnishings and linens, and marble baths. The ocean front luxury suites are worth the splurge and come with reserved poolside cabanas, although equally tempting are the pool suites with walkout access for a private dip at all hours. The ambiance is more laid-back than party central, but be sure to ask about the Ship Bar.

Excellence Punta Cana Located on the secluded white sands of Uvero Alto, this adults-only resort has a sophisticated design with its winding pools and bridges. Excellence Club members get extra perks, including a personal butler, private beach, pool access and a bar lounge.

AlSol Del Mar Luxury Village Located in the posh Cap Cana zone, this new oceanfront stunner is family-friendly, offering children’s activities and kitchenettes in every suite. But our favorite feature is the infinity pool overlooking the beach, with its in-the-water lounge chairs, waterfall and hot tubs.

Barceló Bávaro Palace Deluxe This upscale familyfriendly resort is all about the activities. Choose from golf, kayaking, windsurfing, sailing or wandering on the world-famous Bávaro Beach. After all that fun in the sun, dine at one of 11 restaurants ranging from Japanese to traditional Mexican fare, or unwind at the excellent U-Spa.

CHIC Punta Cana by Royalton This new adults-only boutique resort, in the up-and-coming Uvero Alto area, features luxury suites all facing the Atlantic Ocean. From neon purple-lit rooms to rain showers, reservation-free fine dining, including a unique Middle Eastern cuisine restaurant, and free international calls home, the vibe is one of exclusivity.

Memories Splash Punta Cana Near Bávaro Beach, this family-friendly resort features the largest water park in the Caribbean, complete with splash pads, pools, slides, tubes, wave pool and more. The dining is excellent, with four onsite restaurants and six bars plus access to the Italian restaurant and bars at the next-door Royalton Punta Cana.

Paradisus Palma Real Golf & Spa Resort This luxury resort on Bávaro Beach oozes romance with its central courtyard opening onto the pool, sea and towering coconut trees. Restaurants are also a highlight here, notably the AAA FourDiamond-rated Passion by Martín Berasategui, a seven-time Michelin starred chef.

Maria graciously opens her bright pink home in the hills to visitors during the day, so they can see how she and her family make chocolate and roast coffee as their livelihood. Past the small towns, the vistas turn into broad swaths of pastureland, dotted with grazing cows and horses, and sugar cane fields stretching into the horizon. A unique exploration of the island’s largest sugar cane fields follows, and you can even pick a stem and taste its sweetness. The day ends at the Cigar Museum, where you’ll learn to roll a “habano” for yourself.

FUNKY BÁVARO A safari excursion is not the only way to get down with the locals. The Bávaro area, stretching north of the Punta Cana Airport, is home to two small beach communities—Los Corales and Cortecito— which are ideal for experiencing the local culture and getting lost in the crowd. Start on Playa Los Corales, with its wide-open white stretch, dotted with fishing canoes and tourists parasailing above the coast. Stop in at Huracán Cafe, a white-washed beachfront lounge with sun beds and a dreamy second-story sea view, and sip on a Cuba Libre while the DJ spins. Continue walking west and you’ll end up on Playa Cortecito, with more foot traffic, arts and crafts shacks, mobile vendors and glass bottom boats swaying in the water. There’s a distinct beach town hustle and bustle here, and that’s part of the Dominican charm. Enjoy a seafood lunch at Capitán Cook’s–easily spotted thanks to a fishnet hanging over the entrance–popular with locals for its sea-to-table meals. Pick your seat and select your lunch from a wooden trunk stuffed with fresh catch of the day, from snapper to Mahi Mahi. Grab a cold Presidente while your meal is prepared, and watch the world go by, toes in the sand.

El Valle de Guadalupe in Baja California.

MEXICO’S RUTA DEL VINO

Manicured cypress trees stand sentinel along winding driveways to elegant tasting rooms and creative farm-to-table restaurants. Emerald vineyards stretch to the distant rolling hills, and blazing skies belie the fact that the Pacific coast lies just beyond the valley. You’d be forgiven for thinking this is Napa or Sonoma. At a glance, it certainly resembles its northern cousins. But this is Mexico. Two-thirds the size of Napa Valley, Baja California’s Valle de Guadalupe is home to approximately 80 wineries, many boasting daring architecture, critically acclaimed restaurants, highly accomplished winemakers and world-class chefs. Aptly named the Ruta del Vino, the area is emerging as a premier enotourism destination for U.S. travelers. “Winemaking is getting to be a very big business,” says Fernando Pérez Castro, proprietor at the six-year-old Lomita winery. “It’s an exciting time [for] owners, chefs, all kinds of people who are passionate about their community and about what they’re doing. We’re writing our own history right now, all of us together.” HERE ANDBEYONDMAG.COM FALL/ WINTER 2015

easy to drink. His “Big Blend”—a mix of Syrah, Petit Syrah, Cabernet, Zinfandel and Grenache—is unparalleled. “In this part of the world, you’ll find lots of creativity, and love, and sometimes madness,” Gregory says. “It’s what I wanted. When we arrived, there were maybe 12 to 15 wineries. Five years ago, it was 30. Now, we’re on our way to 100.” FROM BAJA CALIFORNIA TO THE RIVIERA MAYA

Like the Gregory’s, Gustavo Ortega Joaquín also had a dream. He had substantial experience in the hotel business, and after visiting France’s Loire Valley five years ago, he and his wife talked about finding the right spot to open a boutique hotel. Then they discovered the Valle de Guadalupe. “We fell in love with the wines and the food,” Joaquín recalls. “We realized we could do something really interesting.” They joined forces with Joe and Delores Martinez, owners of Lomas Travel and the El Dorado Spa Resorts and Hotels, and Generations Riviera Maya, by Karisma, in Mexico’s Riviera Maya. The result: El Cielo winery in the Guadalupe Valley. “When we built the winery, we had two big concerns,” Joaquín says. “One was growth, because we knew we had to think big. The next was being very correct in every part of the process. Our design is productive and efficient, and we’re the first winery in Mexico to be 75 percent solar-powered.” El Cielo is more than a tasting room, Joaquín says. It’s a complete experience. “We host weddings and concerts, our shop sells local artisanal products like olive oils and cheeses, and we do unusual pairing events,” he explains. “For example, we’ll pair our wines with different types of chocolates.”

By March 2016, El Cielo will have expanded its 12-room hotel to a 58-suite luxury resort with a full spa and conference center. The future looks very bright for the young winery, which currently offers 11 labels. They’re distributed throughout Mexico, including Puerto Vallarta, Los Cabos, Riviera Maya and Isla Cozumel, where Joaquín was born and raised. In fact, most Valle de Guadalupe operations distribute their wines to Mexico’s major resorts, which is great news for vacationers. You need not travel to northern Baja to sample its fruits. You simply need to ask. And more resort guests are asking. “There’s a much higher interest in the world of wine,” says Jeroen Hanlo, vice president of food and beverage operations for Karisma Hotels. “More people

At Lomita, you can taste signature wines such as the full-flavored 2011 Pagano, the polished 2011 Tinto de la Hacienda and the buttery 2013 Espacio Blanco while cleansing your palate with locally made artisanal breads, and marmalade and Paloma cheese made by Castro’s mother. A few miles away at Monte Xanic, founded in 1987, a brand-new building welcomes guests for tours and tastings. Its picture windows look across 300 acres of vines, some of which are up to 80 years old. “We get more than 350 days of sun here,” says Ana Maria Ceseña Sirutis, who handles U.S. market development. “It’s a semi-arid Mediterranean climate with warm days and cool nights. It’s perfect.” Monte Xanic’s best-selling wine is a Chenin-Colombard blend, a bright, fresh wine with citrus notes. Our favorite was a small-batch reserve wine, the Gran Ricardo 2012. These hand-selected Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot grapes came from the oldest vines on the property; if decanted for roughly 40 minutes, the result is a smooth, velvety wine that opens up and expresses itself beautifully. Vena Cava is another memorable spot, in part because its subterranean construction incorporates upsidedown fishing boats. The proprietor and winemaker Phil Gregory and his wife, Eileen, also own the Villa del Valle inn and Corazón de Tierra restaurant. Gregory produces interesting, unexpected flavors in wines that are, at heart,

HOW TO VISIT WINERY TASTING ROOMS LIKE A PRO So you’ve made the decision to visit a winery but you’re a little nervous about it? Lots of people are overwhelmed by the wine glasses, the lingo, the sense that people in the tasting room know oodles more than you ever will. Overcome the anxiety with my simple eight-point plan. 1. you are a guest in their house. ▶ Whatever the fanciness, the crowds, the glassware seem to convey, that’s the basic relationship at play. They have the obligation to treat you with hospitality; you have the responsibility not to set fire to the furniture. 2. no one expects you to know any more than you do ▶ Remember that the folks who work in a typical tasting room see plenty of people who don’t know what wine’s made of (grapes) and critics who think they know everything (we don’t!). They are perfectly happy for you to know nothing. 3. don’t try to change your tastes. ▶ A lot of people who don’t know wine think they’re supposed to like this sophisticated sounding thing, or that one. Wine people know: There are vanilla ice-cream people and ginger sorbet people, and there’s no point trying to force ginger sorbet on the vanilla ice-cream folks. If you only like Chardonnay, that’s fine! 4. it’s fine to dump your wine. ▶ If you’re looking at a spread of half a dozen wine glasses and feeling you can’t drive or will fall asleep before lunch after getting through it, don’t fear. You don’t have to drink anything you don’t want to. Dump buckets are routinely provided, and if you don’t see one it’s perfectly fine to ask for one. 5. don’t fear the swirl. ▶ The most mystifying part of the tasting room experience for a lot of people is that swirling and sniffing thing. Is there a point to it, or is it just pretentious? The reason for the swirl is to make a little tornado over the wine, lifting out the aromatic compounds so they’re up in the air where you can sniff them.

are purchasing wines beyond the house wines. They’re curious.” Hanlo started developing the international wine list for Karisma 11 years ago, and it now boasts 146 labels. Some are Mexican wines from the Valle de Guadalupe (including El Cielo) and the mile-high Parras Valley near the Coahuila-Durango border. The rest hail from around the world. “What could be better than sand and sun paired with great food and great wines?” he asks. “It’s all about creating special moments.” Hanlo believes Karisma Hotels is more focused on wine than anyone else in the Mexican Caribbean. Not only is the Generations Riviera Maya property home to the innovative Wine Kitchen

6. ask questions! ▶ Winemakers and wine-workers are typically there because (surprise!) they love wine. Think of them as art gallery folks, and ask them the same questions: “What is this made of? How was it made? Why did the winemaker do it the way she did? ” 7. spend something. ▶ Even though winemakers get into it for the art, the craft and their love of wine, they can only keep the lights on if money changes hands. Some wineries charge for their wine, but many don’t; in those instances there’s an expectation that if you like the wine, you’ll buy some of it—a couple of bottles to throw into the car, or a few to send home. Most wineries deal with travelers every day and are well-equipped for shipping. 8. it’s all about the connection: ▶ Wineries want you to walk away with a deeper understanding and appreciation of their work. Ideally, for them, it’s the opportunity to make a lifelong connection. If you go into it in the same spirit, you’ll get the most out of the experience— and leave feeling like a pro. During that week, guests get to know a visiting wine personality (winemaker, sommelier or master sommelier) and a guest chef. They will enjoy meet-andgreets, cooking classes, food and wine pairings, a “Waves and Wine” event on the pier, and an evening gala. SPANISH WINES AND FIRE FESTIVALS

Mexico isn’t the only place that tends to fall off the wine radar. Consider Spain. It’s the world’s second-largest wine producer after France, yet most Americans think of Italy for an overseas wine experience first. They’re missing out, according to Erin Nass at United Vacations. Nass has traveled to Spain three times and lived in Seville. On one trip, she and friends rented a car in Valencia and took a twoday driving tour through Laguardia, Logrono and Haro in the Rioja winegrowing region, known for its affordable

In late 2014, Generations Riviera Maya opened the doors to an innovative new venture: the Wine Kitchen, Restaurant and Tasting Room. Here, the chef incorporates wine and related wine products into a wide variety of menu items, creating distinctive cuisine that simply cannot be found anywhere else. Imagine Chardonnayinfused salad dressing. Succulent cuts of beef marinated in wine. Bread rolls with Pinot Noir or Chardonnay grape seeds and skins ground seamlessly into the flour. Eighty percent of the restaurant’s menu items involve wine in some way. “The chefs have a lot of freedom and are constantly looking for new ways to incorporate wine reductions and influences,” notes Jeroen Hanlo, vice president of food and beverage operations for Karisma Hotels. The result? Pure art.

Tempranillo and Grenache. “We loved Laguardia, which is a medieval walled town,” Nass says. “You have to park outside the walls and walk in.” Favorite spots included Bodega el Fabulista with its underground caverns, and Marques de Riscal with its venerable wine operations and contemporary, Frank Gehry-designed hotel. “Some wineries here offer tours, while others only do tastings, so call in advance,” Nass advises. “If tours are offered, they can arrange an Englishspeaking guide for you.” Nass is quick to note that Spain is not an intimidating destination. “English is prevalent, and renting and driving a car is easy,” she says. “Plan to go in March. The climate is cool and pleasant, plus you’ll be able to participate in Las Fallas de Valencia.” In this unique five-day festival, revelers create and then burn statues made of cardboard, wood, papier-mâché and plaster. The city population swells from 1 to 3 million for this fiery celebration. A few final tips for wine lovers: Bring as many suitcases as you can, and pack light. Wrap wine bottles in clothes or bubble wrap, and watch the weight limits in your checked luggage.

It’s what Napa and Sonoma were like many years ago. Our winemakers came in the 1960s, and they wanted to be masters of their craft, not bulk wine producers. — LISA ITEL, TR AVEL OREGON

OREGON’S LAID-BACK WINE COUNTRY

The United States has its own assortment of lesser-known gems in the wine world. For starters, there is the state of Oregon with its nine American Viticultural Areas. Lisa Itel with Travel Oregon says her state still surprises people, because it’s a laid-back version of the tony Napa and Sonoma valleys to the south. “It’s what Napa and Sonoma were like many years ago,” she says. “Our winemakers came in the 1960s, and they wanted to be masters of their craft, not bulk wine producers. That’s how Pinot Noir was born. “It’s a relaxed experience here,” she continues. “It’s unusual in many wine regions to see a winemaker opening bottles in the tasting room, but at Ponzi Wines, you’ll see Luisa Ponzi and her kids sorting grapes.” Approximately 400 wineries are currently operating in Oregon, from boutique producers of 5,000 to 10,000 cases per year to larger growers who might produce anywhere from 30,000 to 220,000 cases per year. Even that, Itel says, is a drop in the bucket compared to Napa. “That’s why people love making wine here,” she said. Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris still dominate the Willamette Valley, while in Oregon’s southern “banana belt,” you’ll find more Tempranillo, Viognier and deeper reds. But no matter where you go, you’ll find outstanding experiences to pair with the wines. At Quailhurst Vineyard Estate in Sherwood, for example, you can combine wine tasting with horseback riding. Cycling is wildly popular everywhere, with riders stopping at farm stands as well as wineries to sample local delights like blueberries and goat cheese. Then there are events like Oregon Wine Month in May, the International Pinot Noir Celebration in July, Feast Portland in September, and Wine Country Thanksgiving in November. “We have a lot of prominent winemakers, and now in this third generation, we’re seeing a lot more women,” Itel says. “I think that’s part of what makes Oregon special—the diversity of what we do, and the people here.”

Farther off the beaten path is a hardy 41-yea r-old w i ner y on Mau i’s 150-year-old Rose Ranch estate. This was once a mountain retreat for King Kalākaua, the last reigning king of Hawaii. Today, guests will find Maui Wine. “We’ve had success w ith Sy ra h here, as well as with Chenin Blanc, Gren ache, Vio g n ier, M a lb e c a nd G e w u r t z t r a m i n e r,” s a y s Jo s e p h Hegele, Maui Wine’s director of sales and marketing. “That’s a lot of variety for 16 acres under vine. We do a lot of experimentation, which is what attracted me. This isn’t like growing Cabernet in Napa; it’s so crazy and different, it’s the Wild West. You don’t know what’s going to work. You have to listen to the vineyard, and find which way is our way.” The winery’s greatest success has been its pineapple wine, which it has produced for four decades: semi-dry, balanced Maui Blanc; sweet, passionfruity Maui Splash; and crisp, sparkling Hula Maui. “It may be the most interesting wine in the world,” Hegele says. “Pineapple and Maui just go together.” The winery offers complimentary tours and tastings seven days a week. Guests can broaden their experiences through Downhill Maui’s bike-andwine tours and Hike Maui’s adventure-and-wine tours. Don’t miss additional area highlights such as the Pau Vodka distillery, Surfing Goat Dairy, and O-O Farms, where you can enjoy picking and tasting different organic foods, meeting the on-site chef, and dining alfresco. “Upcountry Maui used to be just us, and now it’s a major destination in itself,” Hegele says. “There’s a lot more growth here. It’s exciting, because this really is the other face of Maui.” ■

AFTER DARK After you’ve felt Bávaro’s local pulse, it’s time to take it up a notch. Because you can’t leave Dominican Republic without experiencing its award-winning restaurants and exhilarating nightclubs. Designed by Oscar de la Renta, the romantic open-air setting of the AAA Three Diamond-rated La Yola—on a

white draped bamboo deck perched over Punta Cana Marina—is only surpassed by its Mediterranean menu with a Dominican twist. Try the sautéed shrimp in a coconut sauce with “moro de guandules,” or the baked eggplant layered with sweet plantain and mozzarella cheese. Pick a table with an ocean view and look at the turquoise sea while a trio of Dominican musicians serenades you. Over in Bávaro, the culinary influence of foreign expats is evident. Vegans

and omnivores alike will delight in the new AmaLuna, set outdoors on a residential street and offering a five-course organic menu with Japanese, Indian, Italian and Spanish cuisine options. Just a few minutes away, the poolside terrace of Balicana Restaurant serves up a taste of Thai in the Caribbean, with plates of spicy green seafood curry and ginger teriyaki fish. After all that food, there’s one thing left to do until dawn in Dominican Republic. A short jaunt into Bávaro town will land you on a strip where merengue and bachata echo out of bars and dance clubs. The most popular spot is Drink Point, an open-air lounge set across a Texaco gas station, with a thirtysomething crowd spilling out onto the sidewalk terrace. The ultimate in disco fever is the new Coco Bongo, set in Downtown Punta Cana. “It’s a fun late night dance party, until the early morning hours,” says Sara Schuldt from Funjet Vacations. “You can see impersonators, from Beyoncé to Spiderman.” From the visual effects to performers flying across the room, it’s a night you won’t experience anywhere else in Dominican Republic.

Let’s face it, beach combing sugar white sands and getting that perfect tan are bona fide pursuits in these parts. But not all beaches are created equal, even in Punta Cana. Prepare to gasp as you turn the hill on approach to the public, northern Playa Macao, close to Excellence Punta Cana. The initial view of an iridescent blue Atlantic Ocean, velvet sand and towering coconut trees is breathtaking. There are no resorts or concrete structures on the beach and that’s what makes it stunning. This is the perfect spot for a Dominican lunch of whole fried fish, “tostones” and avocado. On the southern tip of Punta Cana, Playa Juanillo shimmers against a phosphorescent blue sea. It’s worth a stop for a cocktail or a fresh coconut. Playa Blanca’s smaller size and ideal location for wind and water sports make it a popular escape for the day. For lunch, try the casual Playa Blanca Restaurant. Opt for a bowl of shrimp ceviche, yucca empanadas, or a plate of spicy goat stew with coconut rice, all washed down with the best margarita in town. ■
