Welcome to the fourth

h.Energy – sustainable Herefordshire week! It gives me great pleasure to introduce h.Energy week 2013. h.Energy, now in its fourth year, has already established a reputation for the quality of its programme and its important place in Herefordshire’s calendar. The week-long event dedicated to achieving our ambition to be a sustainable County will showcase a record number of events throughout our communities. This year’s event has been given a theme – water. This is a precious resource that whilst often taken for granted poses many challenges. It is time to give water the prominence it deserves. Through h.Energy we can raise awareness and explore the opportunities. Water capture, storage, use and reuse should all be high priorities and of particular concern. Water is not only essential to sustaining basic life but to our whole economy, with agriculture in Herefordshire being of paramount importance. Not only this, but the ongoing drive to improve water quality is an issue that affects every single one of us. I am also delighted to announce that we will be launching Re-energising Herefordshire during h.Energy. This will set out what Herefordshire has been doing to tackle climate change, to reduce Co2 emissions, and a way for meeting the challenge of providing for the County’s energy needs. For my part I am looking forward to attending as many events as possible and to being at The Courtyard on 15th October. I am also very pleased to be co-leading Taking the Bus for a Walk with Les Lumsden, my fellow originator of the Herefordshire Bus Walks series, on Sunday 13th October. Why not join us for a scenic bus ride and walk through some great countryside? Finally I would like to thank the organisers, sponsors, participants and you for your interest in being part of the growing number of people who are committed to transforming our county, and to our aim to make Herefordshire a sustainable county. h.Energy is well and truly on the map and here to stay. Water This year for the first time we have given h.Energy a theme… water. Look for events about water saving, water cleaning, water harvesting, keeping water in the landscape, creating energy from water… There’ll be all the fun of pond dipping, as well as some unusual explorations of the profound connection we all have to this essential element of life on earth. Eating Well … with the help of allotments, bees, local vegetable box schemes, fungus and lots of apples! Eating plenty of fresh local produce can be a good start to revitalising our health – and growing our own food is an ideal way to get exercise and fresh air. There are lots of opportunities this week to find out what other local people are getting up to, and to see how local food also saves you energy by avoiding excessive supermarket packaging and food miles. Local Eonomy As a community we are increasingly questioning how we can develop a financial system that supports social and natural resources, and serves the needs of the local area – rather than entirely falling into the hands of multinational corporations. Many of the events this week highlight opportunities to develop Herefordshire’s local economy, working with the idea that small and local solutions are beautiful – and healthy for the county. Energy Efficiency Most of us want to reduce our energy costs, and being more energy efficient in our homes is one of the easiest ways. Uninsulated buildings can lose a third of their heat through the walls and a quarter through the roof. h.Energy Savers is a New Leaf project in Herefordshire to help communities work together and help each other understand more about how they can make savings on energy. Getting Around… There is growing scientific evidence that people who commute by bicycle live longer healthier lives than people who commute by car. Changing to a more active way of travelling (walking, sharing a journey, cycling or taking a bus) is the easiest way to bring exercise into our daily routines, as well as reducing our carbon footprint. Look for the bus symbol by event listings to work out how to leave the car at home. Or come along to the h.Energy Marketplace on Saturday 12th to meet communities who have set up their own car share schemes, or pick up free taster bus tickets. The Natural World Albert Einstein said: “A human being is part of the whole …. Our task must be to free ourselves by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all humanity and the whole of nature in its beauty.” In Herefordshire it is easy to experience the beauty of nature, and to benefit from the increased sense of wellbeing we gain when out in the natural world. Many events during this year’s h.Energy reflect the importance of our connection to the countryside around us… and if you need further proof of the importance of this connection, University of Essex research shows that exposure to nature positively improves our mental and physical health… so come on out! Renewable Energy Increasing numbers of local people are looking into ways of generating their own energy and reducing the cost of off-gas-grid heating. There are many different ways of generating energy from renewable sources (wind, water, sunlight, waste, etc) and most of these are on display during h.Energy. Also look out for information about funding for these measures through the RHI (Renewable Heat Incentive) and FiTs (Feed-in Tariffs scheme). And for those unable to make the outlay on renewable energy, Sharenergy continue to do wonderful work around the county helping people to make their community energy dreams into a reality, some showcased this week. Sustainable Communities “If we are together, nothing is impossible” said Winston Churchill. Once again this year Herefordshire communities bring an inspiring array of activities to the week, demonstrating the range of community-led energy reduction work going on around the county. From community energy projects to car share clubs and community farms. As the Dalai Lama says “… most of our happiness arises in the context of our relationships with others” – so Herefordshire must be doing pretty well on the happiness stakes too. Waste and Recycling ‘Up-cycling’ seems to have become a bit of a buzzword, reflecting the fun to be had in finding ways of re-using items that would previously have been discarded. With a bit of creativity even unwanted packaging can take on a new lease of life. This year’s h.Energy offers some practical opportunities for creative up-cycling and recycling, with clothes swaps, Repair Cafés and workshops through the week. Or, why not nip the problem in the bud and, as Richie Cotteril in Kington says, “Reduce, Reduce, Reduce”? Family Friendly Events Most events during h.Energy are happy for families to come along, but some have made special provision to make sure that children are entertained and as eager to be at the event as you are! Look out for the Ladybird logo, and you will find details of many events with local storytellers, Wildplay and children’s activity packs. And a word about… Wildplay Wildplay is a project of Herefordshire Nature Trust and creates playful opportunities for children across Herefordshire to explore nature outdoors. We are very pleased to be working with them this year to provide outdoor play for children at h.Energy events.

Storytelling For 2013 we have linked up with Herefordshire and west country storytellers, who have stories for all ages at all sorts of events. As Rumi says “the branches of your intelligence grow new leaves in the wind of this listening”. Look out for the storytellers logo.

Repair Cafés Repair Cafés are free meeting places and they’re all about repairing things (together). Over h.Energy Week we have a network of local Repair Cafés popping up! In the place where the Repair Café is located, you’ll find people, tools and materials to help you make repairs on clothes and other household goods. Our h.Energy 2013 Partners Here at New Leaf, we are truly delighted to be working with a range of different partners on this year’s h.Energy. The variety they bring to the week demonstrates the vitality of sustainability activity in Herefordshire. Look out for their names by events they have helped to develop.

So… who are they? AECB, the Association for Environment Conscious Building, is a network of individuals and companies with a common aim of promoting sustainable building. It brings together builders, architects, designers, manufacturers, housing associations and local authorities, to develop, share and promote best practice in environmentally sustainable building. Further information from the AECB will be available at this year’s network of open homes. Balfour Beatty Living Places work in partnership with local authorities to maintain and enhance their local transport and highway networks. They are dedicated to delivering effective, efficient, sustainable and customer-focused services which will enhance communities and environments for the public. Caplor Energy is a much respected renewable energy business based in rural Herefordshire. Long time collaborators with h.Energy, we are very pleased that Caplor will be part of the day Celebrating h.Energy at the Courtyard on the 15th October. Herefordshire Council’s Choose How You Move team will be providing 50 free return bus tickets on a first come, first served basis during the week. Make a note in your diary to come along to the h.Energy Marketplace on Saturday 12th October and pick one up! Many thanks to the Co-operative Membership South & West Region for a grant to help support h.Energy repair cafés, the h.Energy marketplace, the event organiser networking event and the family-friendly elements. New Leaf is itself a co-operative and strongly supports the aims and values of the co-operative movement. 8

The Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC). Some of the funding from New Leaf’s recent h.Energy Savers project (part of the Marches region Green Deal Pioneer Places) is supporting this year’s open eco show homes. We are very grateful to Herefordshire Ramblers, who have linked up with Rail for Herefordshire, Ludlow 21, Leominster Apple Fair and a number of other local groups around the county to deliver a daily walk with a purpose. Most of the walks can be accessed without the need for a car… and with a knowledgeable walk leader, inspiring landscapes, a potential for discussions on local food, energy and so on, and we reckon these walks will have us all making plans about how to change the world. metnet (marches environmental technology network) supports local environmental companies and those companies looking to diversify into the sector. metnet will be joining us in the promotion and organisation of this year’s h.Energy Business Focus at the Courtyard on 15th October. After this year’s Nozstock (Bromyard’s Hidden Valley festival of performance, art and good old-fashioned guitar-strumming and drum-bashing) their new Chicken Cow Cafe generously gave half of its profits to New Leaf. We are delighted that the proceeds from this fundraising are helping to make h.Energy’s Repair Cafes a reality. Herefordshire Council’s Sustainability Unit. As always, we are hugely grateful to Herefordshire Council for their continued support. Amongst other activities during the week, Wye Valley Brewery will be promoting their Dorothy Goodbody’s Harvest Hop beer as the official beer of h.Energy 2013. It is a ‘green hop’, low energy and absolutely delicious beer, and you will find it at pubs around the county this autumn. 9

Also all lights are LEDs, and there is solar gain from the extensive double glazing. This has all been fully monitored with power import and export figures and plots and correlated with meteorological data, hourly, daily, monthly and yearly. This is the first of a series of Open Eco Homes spanning this weekend and Saturday 19th October, based in and around Presteigne. All-day event, with family-friendly activity, energy-saving information and a variety of street entertainment. Everyone welcome! Come along and find out about all sorts of energy saving opportunities at a bustling market in Hereford High Town. If you have ever wondered about putting solar PV on your roof or biomass in your boiler but would like to talk to someone about it first, or thought how useful it would be to share a car with a group of neighbours instead of paying all of the insurance and road tax on your own, or wondered about trying out an electric bike, or thought about joining a veggie box scheme… now is your chance to find out more. Herefordshire Council’s Choose How You Move team will be in High Town, Hereford between 12pm–2pm, giving away a limited number of free return bus tickets, so call by early to avoid disappointment. There will also be information about local walking and cycle routes, the new Greenway walking and cycling crossing to Rotherwas, and bus routes around the county. Come along and say hello. With storytelling for all ages, and The Big Draw, as well as water, energybased and green woodworking activities for children. And as the nights draw in and our heating goes on again, Marches Energy Agency, Herefordshire Housing and Worcester Bosch will be providing information about Green Deal and ECO funding. The Big Draw: h.Energy People’s Gallery of Tomorrow Join in the launch of h.Energy week with this fun family-friendly drop-in workshop. With the help of local artists, draw your vision of the future: buildings, vehicles, landscape, plants, people, fashion, technology. All materials provided. And with the help of film maker Anita Sancha you might even get an opportunity to watch your drawings come to life! Please note that drawings made as part of the Marketplace Big Draw will not be entered into the Ladybird prize draw – there will however be Luck Dip prizes for our younger participants. Gasp with amazement as you spy on passers-by in the street and pick them up in your hand in the Dark Tent… AND Let us know if you want to get involved in helping to plan and create bee art projects – do you want to help make Outrider’s digital ‘Dark Tent – bee colony’ and ‘community quilt’. What’s happening to our bees – how can we learn from the past to protect us in the future? We will be using Hereford Library’s Alfred Watkins 250 year-old collection of bee-keeping publications and journals to help us create Outrider a program of art commissions – what are your ideas to create a sustainable future happen NOW? 9 Launch of Climate Action Now High Town, Hereford HR1 2AA Sat, 12th October, 10am–2pm A new and energetic group of local residents will be launching Climate Action Now (CAN) at the h.Energy marketplace on 12th October. CAN focuses on promoting the climate change conversation, linking the voices of concerned people with policy makers and politicians, and showing how the effects of climate change are already starting to be felt. Look out for CAN’s stall – join the conversation, sign the petition, pick up a postcard, spread the word, eat cake! CAN is looking for volunteers to stimulate the conversation across the county. 41 Butford Organics – our biomass energy, solar pv and insulation systems Butford Organics, Bowley Lane, Bodenham, HR1 3LG Sun, 13th October, Sun 20th October, 2.30pm We are an organic smallholding where we have taken considered steps to maximise our use of renewable energy resources. In particular we have a log biomass boiler which provides all our heating and hot water needs using our own wood supply. This is supplemented by a 4kWh PV array and we have a longer term aim to go off-grid. We have also insulated both the old and new parts of our farmhouse as far as practical. Our main activity on the Farm is the production of organic cider and perry and our Farm Shop is open Friday and Saturday and most Sundays from 10am to 5pm. Make a wish in a well? Have a wash in the sink? What are the stories and statistics that come flooding out of the tap? Does a raindrop remember? Water shapes our landscapes, fills our bodies and connects us all. But how much do we need? And where is it all coming from? From the River Wye to the Greenland ice sheets, from flooding to drought, Drop in the Ocean is an invitation for you to join us and reflect on water, how we use it and what it means in a changing climate. Part walking performance, part installation, you may encounter the performers in two ways: out in the streets or fields around Hereford where Jess will be walking, carrying water and collecting audio stories (look out for a milkmaid’s yoke), or in the installation space at All Saints Church, where Mads will be your spirit guide through indoor waterscapes and sound loops. Drop in at any time during the day (10am–5pm) to have a look, listen or a glass of water and chat (and then a slice of cake in the excellent All Saints Café). Less driving, no flying, less packaging, less energy consumption, more jumpers and groovy firewood. Issues: poor insulation, cats and kids, dispersed extended family and increasing reliance on computers! Our philosophy: Reduce, Reduce, Reduce. Solutions began with disconnecting the oil-fired central heating which was effectively heating the sky, followed by addressing some of the issues through collective action in the wider community. This included establishing a new Environment & Energy group in Kington (KLEEN) and a new allotment site (now pumping out food), litter-picking, getting involved in local government, seeking local co-operative community sustainable electricity generation, working from home through music teaching and cottage industry-style enterprises with a different business model. And now, thanks to those nice people at New Leaf able to demonstrate solar thermal hot water integrated with the existing wood fired cooking and heating system as well as room in roof insulation – transforming those top rooms, previously uninhabitable both in the cold of winter and the heat of summer. The six-mile walk makes use of new permissive paths made available under a Natural England/Defra conservation scheme to encourage curlews to nest in the Arrow Valley. We look at the remains of an ancient water meadow irrigation system of ditches and sluices, and visit Ivingtonbury, the main farm in the conservation scheme. We learn how the local Ryeland sheep were bred to produce the finest wool in Europe. We visit the farm orchard before returning to town along the banks of the River Arrow. 58 A Giant Water-powered Cuckoo Clock Westonbury Mill Water Gardens, Pembridge, HR6 9HZ Tue, 15th October, 11am–5pm A special h.Energy opportunity to visit Richard Pim’s 25ft, fully water-powered cuckoo clock at Westonbury Mill Water Gardens. A hydrogeologist who brought water to arid farmlands in Saudi Arabia and Nepal, Richard spent around three years designing and making, piece by piece, this engineering marvel. Believed to be the only giant cuckoo clock in the UK, and the first in the world to run using water, the mechanism sends a three-foot cuckoo out into the Pembridge sky

to the sound of bird calls on the hour. Richard and Sally are generously opening the Water Gardens to visitors free of charge today as part of h.Energy. 65 Water power and people power with Transition Leominster

Start at Corn Square, Leominster, HR6 8LR Wed, 16th October, 10am–3pm Leisurely cycle ride through country lanes to Arrow Mill, Transition Kingsland, about six miles each way. Arrow Mill is a large Leominster 17th century building of several floors, with a low breast shot waterwheel which will be turning. 19th century machinery, mostly of iron, and three pairs of stones. Special features are a machine for beating out clover seeds, and the drive to it, the original beaten earth ground floor, old flour dresser, and an internal hop kiln. A display of historical tools is on one of the floors. It is owned by Mr and Mrs Hall, who have kindly allowed us to visit. We will be leaving the mill at 12-12.30pm. 83 h.Energy film screening at The Courtyard: Chasing Ice

The Courtyard, Edgar Street, Hereford Thu, 17th October, 6pm–8pm A phenomenal, passionate, unpreachy documentary that provides insanely beautiful evidence of man-made climate change through time-lapse photography of the rapid retreat of the world’s glaciers. Twenty years ago National Geographic photographer James Balog was skeptical about climate change; then he started photographing ice. Now he’s a man on a mission, setting up the Extreme Ice Survey, a huge global project to remotely film the glaciers’ rapid disappearance using custom-built cameras designed to withstand 200mph winds and temperatures of minus 40 degrees. Thanks to the fabulous photography of the ice in all its glorious shapes and colours melting and constantly changing shape, this is both extremely beautiful and extremely scary, bringing home the reality of climate change. If a single picture is worth a thousand words then Chasing Ice tells volumes. The screening will be followed by a discussion on issues raised by the film. 96 Rowland Vaughan ‘Waterworks’ Walk Start opposite Vowchurch church, HR2 0RB Fri, 18th October, 2pm A short guided walk in the Golden Valley with Martin Kibblewhite and Nic Howes. Come and look at what can be seen (which is quite a lot, if you know where to look!) of the water management scheme implemented by Rowland Vaughan of Vowchurch, in the late 16th century. As well as being of historical interest, this scheme is highly relevant to water and land management to-day, in times of drought and flooding. It is an example of what can and should be being done now over whole catchments, to alleviate our water problems. Both Martin and Nic are also greatly knowledgeable about all things to do with the Herefordshire countryside... so this should be a lovely and also informative walk. This walk would complement the walk led by Pete Blench on Tuesday 15th (event no. 55). Several members of the Golden Valley Studies Group, which is currently preparing a book on Rowland Vaughan and his ‘Waterworks’, will accompany the walk. Walk three miles to Canon Frome Court, through pleasant countryside. See how the members of the community live and work together and how they have introduced a boiler in association with the Woolhope Woodheat project. Walk back by a different route to Tarrington (three miles). Easy walking with some stiles. Return to Hereford at 1740. Bring packed lunch, buy drinks there. Stout shoes/boots and outdoor clothing essential. Sorry no dogs. Canon Frome Court, Canon Frome, nr Ledbury, HR8 2TD Sun, 20th October, 2pm–5pm Come to Canon Frome Court, home of an intentional community. This year the wait is over! Sustainable local woodheat warmth has arrived community-wide thanks to a unique collaboration between the community and Woolhope Woodheat, a 199kw. woodchip boiler and much much more. Conducted tours all afternoon take you through the story and around the district heating route to the boiler house with knobs, dials and Big Pipes galore. Then view the displays over tea and home-made cake in our now-cosy tearoom. For the kids we have a play area on our front lawn – swings and ropes, slides and a climbing fame… and we’re planning ‘stuff to do’ indoors too.
