My Sister Asked Me For A Binder— What It Taught Me About Gender Dysphoria

How to support someone you love

Puberty was pretty anticlimactic for me.

It was more a series of annoyances than anything. Mastering the art of shaving without nicking a knee; finding a bra to prop up my newly formed, unimpressively undersized boobs; and learning how to use a tampon all apparently meant I’d become a woman. I was kind of “whatever” about the whole thing, and never really gave much thought to it.

But having your body change to reflect your gender isn’t the same experience for everyone. For people with gender dysphoria—the feeling that your assigned gender does not match your gender identity— puberty, and the years that follow, can be a traumatic, distressing time.

“We all start thinking about our gender at some point in our childhood—but it really consolidates around puberty and after,” explains Northwell Health child and adolescent psychologist Dr. Shervin Shadianloo. “For those with gender dysphoria, their body develops

differently during puberty than the way their mind has developed in terms of understanding their own gender.”

My younger sister Taylor came out of puberty with the body I had dreamed of having: tall, slender, with a huge rack, and curves. At first, there were occasions where she’d dress to show it off. I have a vivid memory of Taylor wearing a tightfitting red dress to our joint high school and college graduation party. I remember telling my guy friends who were drooling over Taylor to dream on. She was too young for them—and wasn’t into men, anyway.

But the more time passed, the more distressed Taylor seemed to be about their breasts—to the point where they’d wrap them to look flatter chested, and wear shirts that hid them. This past Christmas, Taylor asked me to buy them a binder—a circular, binding piece of fabric designed to make your chest appear completely flat.

“A person who is assigned female at birth develops female characteristics during puberty and may feel distressed by having breasts. They may start wearing a binder to flatten their chest,”

NYC PRIDE 2022 / GENDER DYSPHOIRA | 6 |

explains Shadianloo. “Some would like to look masculine and some may feel they are not comfortable looking completely masculine, either,” which is where my sister was at. “Often, we’ll look at what part of the body is causing these feelings. It’s about not looking at transient feelings but looking at the persistency and consistency to help people make the decision that is safe and reliable for them,” Shadianloo explains.

At that moment, I realized Taylor didn’t need me to be able to put myself in their shoes and understand why this was important. My sister just needed me to know that it was—and support them.

“Family support is the number one thing people with gender dysphoria need,” says Shadianloo. “We hear stories about the increased risk of homelessness transgender and gender non-conforming youth, but we need to pay attention to the reasons these things happen.” Oftentimes, he explains, transgender and gender non-conforming youth are shunned away from society or kicked out of their homes because of their identity or the way they present. Pushing them to change—to conform to their assigned gender—can actually be traumatizing socially and psychologically. It can impact their mental health and development and bar them from achieving milestones they were capable. “The risk is not

high because someone identifies one way or the other—it is high because of what happens to them as a result of how they identify.”

It’s important to know that gender dysphoria is not a disease or an illness. As Shadianloo puts it, “It is just a naturally occurring process which can take different trajectories from person to person—the same way a person is either right or left handed. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines it as “gender incongruence” and categorizes it in a separate section of “condition related to sexual health.”

If someone in your family is exploring their gender or identifying as transgender or gender non-conforming, Shadianloo recommends educating yourself on the topic. “Getting information from the right resources is crucial,” he says. “There’s a ton of misinformation out there, but Organizations like WPATH (The World Professional Association for Transgender Health) and the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry are reliable sources.”

Recently, I came across a postcard Taylor drew for me when they first started dressing more gender neutral. I’d forgotten about it, but it solidified why they’d asked me to buy the binder in the first place.

Because they knew I would.

*Taylor’s preferred pronouns are they/him.

A LETTER FROM THE CO-CHAIRS ANDRÉ THOMAS & SUE DOSTER

On behalf of all of us at Heritage of Pride, we welcome you to NYC Pride 2022. It gives us great pleasure to return to our full slate of events that fulfill our mission of educating, inspiring, celebrating, and commemorating our diverse community. Through the pandemic, we’ve learned many lessons, and we invite you back with an emphasis on event and participant safety. We are also pleased to announce our commitment to environmental sustainability across our events and organization.

This year’s theme, “Unapologetically Us,” celebrates our resolve to be ourselves, in the face of those who would deny and oppress us. We celebrate our diverse community and work toward a world where all people have equal rights under the law. We lift up and support those who may not be able to speak for themselves and welcome all who share our goals to join us in this fight.

Unfortunately, this year has seen a sharp increase in attacks against our community, many of which have targeted our most vulnerable. Clearly, this is not where we thought we would be after all the progress made in the last fifty years. Racial justice seems further away than ever, there are more than 300 anti-LGBTQ+ bills winding their way through local and state legislatures and almost half of them target our trans community. Our dignity is mocked by alt-right news media, comedians, and politicians. In New York City, the home of the Stonewall Rebellion, politicians have appointed people that have called for our deaths. Even with these blatant homophobic acts, we persist.

It’s time to get back to the streets! We need a place where we can celebrate our diversity and strength together. The modern LGBTQ+ movement started when the most marginalized among us, primarily trans, black and brown people, took a stand against oppression and stopped hiding who they were. This year, we carry that spirit forward as we again defend our right to human dignity and protection under the law. We will not apologize

for living our lives freely and out loud. We stand proudly and “Unapologetically Us.”

This year NYC Pride is entering a new era of leadership in our sta , a new brand identity, including a new logo and website, our first-ever gala, a new venue for our marquee event, Pride Island, with our first trans headliner, and we’ve added an o cial event in Brooklyn. Our Brunch, falling auspiciously on Juneeteenth, will spotlight excellence in the Black LGBTQIA+ community. Our newly named parties will bring back the joy of celebrations, music, and dance.

Our Pride Gives Back program continues to highlight grassroots organizations that are doing important but often overlooked work, such as Colectivo Intercultural TRANSgrediendo, which advocates through public policy work for the rights of TransGNB individuals in New York, and the SOULE Foundation, which fights for the educational advancement of LGBT youth of color.

As an organization, NYC Pride has committed to give at least 30 percent of our Pride Gives Back grants to women and minority-focused groups. We are proud to report that we have far exceeded that goal and this is a commitment that we intend to continue annually and hopefully expand in the coming years.

Pride is not possible without the many members, sta , volunteers, and partners who are a part of us during Pride and extend their support beyond June with our Pride 365 initiatives. We hope that you, too, can continue to support us by donating, volunteering, liking, attending, and sharing our messages in whichever way works for you. We’ve seen the many changes that the past two years have brought to this city, and we want you all to be a part of our future.

PRIDE GIVES BACK

Celebration Is Protest And Ending Discrimination Starts With Visibility

NYC Pride throws a damn good party every June. But there’s a reason for all that glitter and glam, which is why our work doesn’t end when the march route does.

LGBTQ+ people deserve to be fully ourselves— and to have that freedom backed by equality under the law. When you donate to NYC Pride, you bring that future ever closer by:

• Building a platform to amplify more queer voices.

• Supporting queer-led organizations through Pride Gives Back grants.

• Investing in community outreach to bring queer folx back from the margins.

• Keeping Pride events financially accessible to everyone.

• Launching new initiatives and events. Heritage of Pride gives back to the community by o ering a multitude of unique grant opportunities for various organizations.

NYC Pride’s Pride Gives Back grant program is focused on financially assisting nonprofit and community organizations within the local New York metro area looking to create programs/ events in the 2022-2023 Pride season. Since 1984, NYC Pride has given more than $25 million in grants to individuals and nonprofits through our grant programs. Grant applications open every February and winners are announced in April. Grants range from $300-$15,000.

Colectivo Intercultural Transgrediendo (ourvoicesarefree.org), an organization working on the dissemination of human rights access to comprehensive health care of TransGNB people. By strengthening the social and cultural expression of diverse gender identities in New York City, the organization aims to guarantee our well-being and the right to a life free from all types of violence. Rusa LGBTQ+ (rusalgbtq.org), a community of Russian-speaking LGBTQ+ people, their friends, and associates. RUSA LGBT originated as an activist group helping asylum seekers from Russia, Kazakhstan, Belarus, Ukraine, Kyrgyzstan, and other countries of the former Soviet Union.

Out My Closet, Inc. (outmycloset.org), founded in 2013 by LGBTQ+ activist, Michael A. Narain, this nonprofit empowers displaced and under resourced LGBTQ+ youth with clothing, care, and compassion and creates a rming multimedia messages of hope, inclusiveness, and support.

The SOULE Foundation (soulefoundation.org), empowers the educational advancement of LGBTQ+ Youth of Color to become fully expressed individuals, by o ering dynamic programming, mentoring their life goals, and supporting educational goals through scholarship.

The organization’s signature programming includes MOBItalks, a personal and professional development series for Black gay men and MOBIfest, an interactive wellness experience that celebrates Black queer voices in fashion, music, visual arts, and media. InReach (inreach.org), formerly known as AsylumConnect, InReach is for the diverse LGBTQ+ community including asylum seekers and refuges, undocumented and other immigrants, young people experiencing homelessness, or those facing family or community rejection due to their identity. It is the first tech platform matching LGBTQ+ people with safe, verified resources.

Community Grants

Every year, NYC Pride also awards thousands of dollars in grant money to LGBTQIA-friendly and LGBTQIA-a rming organizations. The grants are working grants, which means that in order to receive the grant money, members or volunteers from your organization must perform specific functions, as a group, at our NYC Pride events. Grants are awarded in amounts from $750 to $2,500, depending on the commitment.

PRIDE IN NYC: A HISTORICAL

Early in the morning on June 28, 1969, police raided the Stonewall Inn, a Greenwich Village bar that had become a staple of New York City’s underground gay community. But this time, tired of the ongoing raids, community members fought back, striking what would become known as The Stonewall Riots

A year after Stonewall, the New York’s first Gay Pride March was held by the Christopher Street Liberation Day Committee to commemorate the riots. The New York Times reported that the marchers took up the entire street for about 15 blocks.

One of the first major successes of the movement came in 1973, when the American Psychiatric Association removed homosexuality from the DSM-ll, where it had been listed as a mental illness alongside pedophilia and zoophilia. Pride organizations began forming in major cities throughout the U.S. to continue the fight.

In 1979, following the 10-year anniversary of Stonewall and the assassination of Harvey Milk, thousands took to the streets for the first National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights. The struggle had been a collection of local ones, but for the first time, it garnered major national attention.

June 5, 1981, saw the first reports of a rare pneumonia that was killing gay men, and soon other diseases began to attack their weakened immune systems, a condition known as “GRID” (gay related immune deficiency). It was officially renamed AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome) when it became clear that anyone was vulnerable to HIV. AIDS would disproportionately kill gay and bi men and trans people in the United States for more than a decade before effective treatments were found.

Pride celebrations expanded in many major cities around the world. Heritage of Pride was founded in 1984 to take over the planning of New York City Pride events after the Christopher Street Liberation Day Committee, former organizers of The March and Rally, disbanded.

In 1993, the U.S. Government had just passed “don’t ask, don’t tell,” but gay rights remained front and center on Capitol Hill and on the streets of New York. Heritage of Pride took over the Christopher Street Festival, renaming it PrideFest. The first New York City Dyke March was also held in June 1993.

In 1994, tens of thousands of LGBTQ+ people were in New York City for the 25th Anniversary of Stonewall, The International Lesbian and Gay Association Conference, and the Gay Games. Representing nations around the world, 20,000 lesbians attended the International Dyke March.

Domestic challenges, and growing international Pride community obstacles such as the Defense of Marriage Act, continued to thwart the community nationally. In 1997, Heritage of Pride hosted the 16th annual International Association of Lesbian and Gay Pride Coordinators conference, the first to have substantial participation from international pride committees.

HISTORICAL TIMELINE

In 2000, Vermont passed the first laws allowing for civil unions and registered partnerships among LGBTQ+ couples. In 2004, same-sex marriage laws were passed in Massachusetts. Other laws banned marriage equality in Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Oregon, and Utah. Civil Unions were also banned in Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Virginia, and Wisconsin.

In 2008, same-sex marriage was swiftly struck down several months later when voters passed ballot initiative Proposition 8. A federal court declared Prop 8 unconstitutional in 2010, while Washington, New Hampshire, Maryland, and Washington, D.C., all recognized same-sex marriage. Though the struggle for marriage rights continued, steady and increasing progress was being made.

On the eve of Pride weekend in 2011, state lawmakers voted to make New York the sixth state in the nation, and the most populous thus far, to legally recognize same-sex marriages. The Empire State joined Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Vermont, as well as the District of Columbia.

In 2013, one of NYC Pride’s Grand Marshals, Edie Windsor, brought her fight against the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) to the U.S. Supreme Court and won. The federal government now recognized same-sex marriages in states where they are legal, but some states still try to ban same-sex unions.

In 2015, a full 46 years after the Stonewall Riots ushered in the modern LGBTQ+ rights movements, the Supreme Court ruled that same-sex couples can marry nationwide. The fight continued across the nation, as full protections (including housing, employment, and public accommodations) proved elusive in many states.

In 2019, the largest NYC Pride March coincided with the 50th anniversary of Stonewall and WorldPride NYC, the first time the international event was held in the U.S. New York City had 5 million visitors on Pride weekend and an estimated 4 million attended the parade.

In 2020 the COVID-19 pandemic forced celebrations to go virtual and in 2021, NYC Pride returned with the theme “The Fight Continues.” This time attendees were fighting for themselves, the BIPOC and trans members of our community, our legacies, and the future of LGBTQ+ youth.

BEING YOU IS PRICELESS

This Pride month, Mastercard is proud to continue its longstanding support of the LGBTQIA+ community through Your True Self is Priceless, a campaign designed to celebrate the power that comes from embracing and living as your authentic self.

This year’s celebration of Pride builds on Mastercard’s longstanding commitment to the LGTBQIA+ community, including the company’s 2019 introduction of True Name, a card feature allowing transgender and nonbinary cardholders to display their chosen name on their Mastercard, enabling people to embrace their true selves.

“Building a world where everyone is included is foundational to Mastercard’s values, and we’re proud to celebrate the LGBTQIA+ community and freedom that comes when people live as their authentic selves,” says Rustom Dastoor, EVP North America Marketing and Communications, at Mastercard.

“This year’s Pride brings new opportunities to reach people, both in the physical and digital worlds.”

For this year’s Pride, Mastercard partnered with Brooklyn-based illustration artist Shanée Benjamin to design the company’s NYC Pride March float celebrating the Your True Self is Priceless promotion.

Benjamin is a queer illustrator who is inspired by the rich and vibrant culture of her community and hometown of Brooklyn, New York. She passionately works brands to create content that tells the stories of queer Black joy.

As part of the campaign, Mastercard is asking members of the LGBTQIA+ community to write candid, handwritten letters to their younger selves during any time in their journey to embracing their true selves, however they choose. These heartfelt messages collected through social media will celebrate the positive power of truth and authenticity and will be part of a virtual, immersive exhibition in the metaverse’s Decentraland and Meta’s Horizon Worlds, a gallery, and print, social, and other mediums.

Here Mastercard Rustom Dastoor, EVP, speaks with Benjamin about her work, the True Self project, and the importance of encouraging and embracing our unique authenticity.

Rustom Dastoor: What inspires your current work, and how have you seen your mission evolve in recent years?

Shanée Benjamin: My current work is inspired by the vibrancy and diversity of my community, and home in Brooklyn New York. I love how rich in culture Brooklyn is and how unapologetic my community is. As I’ve grown as an artist, I find myself wanting to depict as much queer Black joy as I possibly can because growing up there wasn’t much. I’m excited to use my art and voice to create a space to be seen.

Rustom Dastoor: Working with the right partner – in allyship and activism – is critical. How do you evaluate your partners before pursuing new projects to ensure you are making an impact? And what attracted you to the collaboration with Mastercard?

Shanée Benjamin: I love working with partners that hear my perspective and give me space to create authentically and be myself, and Mastercard has definitely done so. Companies and big brands have the power and resources for big change. It is important that the LGTBQIA+ community is seen, and our voices and images amplified. I feel confident that Mastercard’s mission for True Name initiative – a feature that enables transgender and nonbinary people to display their chosen name on their card – is creating space and opportunity for community members that want to show up authentically and be their true self.

Rustom Dastoor: You took part in Mastercard’s “Being Your True Self is Priceless” initiative this year, where you wrote a letter to your younger self. What did you tell her that would make her proud?

Shanée Benjamin: I’d tell younger Shanée to continue standing up for yourself and creating space!

There’s enough room for all of us to love together and find joy. I think it’s great that Mastercard is inspiring the LGTBQIA+ community to write and share letters of advice they would give to their younger selves in celebration of embracing their true selves. Watch Mastercard social media channels later this month to see some of these letters of inspiration.

Rustom Dastoor: This year’s NYC Pride is back in full force. You are involved in Mastercard’s float creation for the historic New York Pride parade as well as the Decentraland’s Metaverse Pride celebration. What was top of mind for you in creating the float design?

Shanée Benjamin: My inspiration for the float design comes from representing flags from different communities and speaking love into yourself. A full circle moment. While our physical and digital lives become more united than ever, I am excited to have the opportunity to work with Mastercard to celebrate inclusivity and bring people together through my artwork in both the

IRL NYC Pride parade as well as in the Metaverse Pride celebration.

Rustom Dastoor: What opportunities do you think the virtual space has in elevating diversity?

Shanée Benjamin: At the moment, there is an opportunity to establish diversity, equity, and inclusion in the virtual space, and I think it’s great that Mastercard is partnering with queer artists to share their representation in the metaverse. From creators, to architects, to users, there is an opportunity to build an inclusive space using technology to have a positive impact on society.

Rustom Dastoor: While tremendous change has been made, where do you hope to see the most change for those in the LGBTQIA+ community as we look to the future?

Shanée Benjamin: Change has been made, and I continue to hold space for community members through my art.

YES, LGBTQ+ YOUTH ARE UNDER ATTACK

It has been a tough few years for our LGBTQ+ youth. First, the social and educational disruption of the pandemic hit queer, trans, and nonbinary youth particularly hard.

The school-at-home mandate was hard on most kids, but many LGBTQ+ young people who were living with unsupportive parents and family members immediately lost access to their only support and resources when schools shuttered.

But then, far-right conservatives launched an ever-intensifying culture war that revolves around demonizing, disenfranchising, and ultimately erasing LGBTQ+ youth, particularly those who are trans or nonbinary. The vitriol spewed in legislative houses and on conservative news and talk shows and podcasts has had real-world costs.

In just one weekend during June 2022, Proud Boys (an all-male, far-right, neo-fascist group), attacked a San Francisco performer at a drag queen story hour, a group of 31 armed neo-Nazis were arrested en route to attack an Idaho Pride, and elsewhere in the same state, a preacher told his congregation that God wants LGBTQ+ people to die.

“These incidents are a symptom of the permissible climate of hate that people on the front lines have seen escalating for years,” says Cathy Renna, director of communications, National LGBTQ Task Force. “We have seen anti-LGBTQ attacks increasing in every facet of our lives, from social media to the streets.

Unfortunately, with hundreds of legislative attacks on queer and trans youth and all our families, as well as rollbacks of our basic rights from voting access to bodily autonomy, this uptick in specifically anti-LGBTQ incidents during Pride is shocking but not surprising.”

Perpetrators of violence who wish to target us know that Pride events are where you can find us.

“We gather as community and with that visibility comes backlash. Most terrifying are the organized, larger scale attacks like the one thwarted in Idaho,” says Renna.

Even in the face of such anti-LGBTQ+ hatred that rises to the level of domestic terrorism, few should doubt our resilience. “Make no mistake,” Renna, says, “our community has worked too hard for too long to not do all we can to keep each other safe and do everything we can to prevent our erasure and loss of the hard-fought-for gains we have made — and hold back as many of the vicious attacks from our statehouses to our schools.”

This Pride will be special because it comes amid these attacks on our communities nationwide.

“June 2022 will be a month of demonstrations of our resilience and passion for equality and community,” Renna says. “I hope we all participate with that spirit and with the lives of our trans youth, BIPOC communities, and queer families in our hearts.”

Indeed, this caustic environment is taking a significant (and intentional) toll on LGBTQ+ youth. Trans youth in particular are impacted by antitrans bills that aim to keep them from receiving life-saving, gender-affirming health care and to sever their relationships with supportive parents (and supportive teachers and LGBTQ+ adults).

“The Trevor Project’s 2022 National Survey on LGBTQ Mental Health found that 45 percent of LGBTQ youth seriously considered suicide in the past year,” says Amit Paley, CEO and executive director of The Trevor Project. “Further, nearly 1 in 5 transgender and nonbinary youth reported attempting suicide in the past year, and LGBTQ

Here’s how we need to respond: unapologetically.

attempting suicide in the past year, and LGBTQ youth of color reported higher rates than their white peers.”

Paley argues that the answer is a legislative one: “Lawmakers must address this public health crisis by implementing intersectional, equitable policy solutions that confront structural barriers, foster public understanding, and expand access to a rming support systems and care.”

But the path ahead is treacherous in the current political climate.

“Unfortunately,” Paley acknowledges, “we’ve seen lawmakers across the country introduce more than 300 anti-LGBTQ bills — most specifically targeting transgender and nonbinary young people — that lead to further isolation and stigma.”

It’s in our hands now.

“We must all come together to defeat these anti-LGBTQ bills,” Paley concludes. “LGBTQ youth mental health and suicide prevention should transcend political lines and cultural divides.”

Our youth are our community’s biggest assets, and in the face of such hate, their survival is our

greatest weapon in defending the future we want to live in.

You don’t need to be under 21 to be distressed right now. As a queer, trans guy who grew up on a small farm in Idaho, and is back taking care of family, I too, am struggling. It was so di cult growing up here as a gender nonconforming kid. It did get better. Now, in this state and dozens of others, it has gotten much worse.

I’m afraid for queer, trans, and nonbinary Idaho youth. In this conservative rural community, I’m sometimes afraid for myself. But one thing I know now that I didn’t know then, is that I am not alone.

You are not alone. There is a huge LGBTQ+ community out there. You can find your people. And resources to help. Groups like the Trevor Project are also under attack, but that’s because they are saving so many LGBTQ+ lives.

You need to know: the world needs you — just as you are. Don’t give up. Pride is protest. Survival is rebellion.

If you or someone you know are feeling overwhelmed, the Trevor Project is there to listen and provide support. Trained crisis counselors are available 24/7 at 1-866-488-7386, by texting START to 678678, or via chat at TheTrevorProject.org/Get-Help.

PAVING THE WAY FOR THE LGBT+ COMMUNITY

Pride Month is a moment to reflect and celebrate the progress and achievements of the LGBT+ community. Beyond the floats and costumes, the chants and songs, Pride Month is about community. It’s about people coming together to support each other, share their stories and celebrate their freedom. It’s about finding your truth and paving the way for others to do the same.

As a strong supporter and sponsor of NYC Pride for over 16 years, JPMorgan Chase & Co. is committed to paving the way for the LGBT+ community, every month of the year. The only financial services company to receive a perfect score on the Human Rights Campaign’s Corporate Equality Index for 20 consecutive years, we strive to consistently show support for LGBT+ employees, customers, clients and the communities where we do business.

We recently strengthened our commitment by creating a first-of-its-kind Office of LGBT+ Affairs. This full-time, global team is focused on driving equity and inclusion for the LGBT+ community — inside and outside the company.

“Now more than ever, we need to lock arms with our LGBT+ employees, customers and partners to promote equity and better serve our communities,” says Brad Baumoel, global head of the Office of LGBT+ Affairs. “I’m so excited about my team’s dedicated focus to help members of the LGBT+ community reach their personal, professional and financial goals.”

In an effort to make a tangible, measurable difference in the lives of LGBT+ people every day, Brad and his team are focusing on the health, well-being and growth of the most vulnerable members of the community: LGBT+ youth, our workforce and elders. The office is driving initiatives to advance economic inclusion across these groups — but they aren’t doing it alone. In collaboration with a global network of nonprofit partners, including several New Yorkbased organizations like SAGE, GLSEN, The LGBT Center, Native Son and NYC Anti-Violence Project, JPMorgan Chase is creating equal opportunity for all LGBT+ people to thrive.

“These partnerships are a top priority,” says Mr. Baumoel. “There’s still a tremendous amount of discrimination and barriers to inclusion that the LGBT+ community faces. We’re grateful to

come together and support these organizations as they push for positive change.”

NYC PRIDE EVENTS

It’s 2022 and NYC Pride is back in the flesh. Check out this year’s roster of inperson events to help you reconnect with your LGBTQ+ family.

NYC Pride, in partnership with Tribeca, announces Pride Presents, a unique cinematic event celebrating LGBTQIA+ film during Pride. This year’s feature film, Disclosure, will make its film festival debut on the East Coast as part of Pride Presents.

Hosted by Laverne Cox and Sam Feder!

PRIDE PRESENTS JUNE 17, 2022 7 PM • SPRING STUDIOS A Cinematic Event Featuring Screenings Spotlighting the LGBTQIA+ Community
COURTESY NETFLIX (DISCLOSURE, LAVERNE COX); DIA DIPASUPIL (SAM FEDER)

Disclosure is an unprecedented, eye-opening look at transgender de pictions in film and television, revealing how Hollywood simultaneously reflects and manufactures our deepest anxieties about gender.

Leading trans thinkers and creatives, including Laverne Cox, Lilly Wachows ki, Yance Ford, Mj Rodriguez, Jamie Clayton, and Chaz Bono, share their reactions and resistance to some of Hollywood’s most beloved moments. Grappling with films like A Florida En chantment (1914), Dog Day Afternoon, The Crying Game, and Boys Don’t Cry, and with shows like The Jeffersons, The L-Word, and Pose, they trace a histo ry that is at once dehumanizing, yet also evolving, complex, and sometimes humorous. What emerges is a fascinat ing story of dynamic interplay between trans representation on screen, society’s beliefs, and the reality of trans lives. Reframing familiar scenes and iconic characters in a new light, director Sam Feder (right) invites viewers to confront unexamined assumptions, and shows how what once captured the American imagination now elicit new feelings. Disclosure provokes a startling revo lution in how we see and understand trans people.

Two short films will also be screened at Pride Presents.

Beautiful They depicts a chance meeting that paves the way for a deeper con nection. When two young people cross paths one afternoon, they find that they are irresistibly drawn to one another. Dreamily shot in warm, vibrant color, and sustained with an atmospheric, almost ethereal synth score, Beautiful They is a queer surf romance that enam ors with its slow-burn, delicate intimacy.

Leaf Boat is a Welsh-language animated short film telling the story of Heledd and Celyn, who navigate the undiscovered and murky waters of entering a new re lationship. Through the bewitching pow er of 2D animation, this film explores the internal worlds of the characters’ emo tions visualized through stormy seas.

THE CONFERENCE

Transformative Changemakers Sharing New Approaches to Activism.

NYC Pride’s Conference is an annual symposium led by trans formative changemakers in the queer community, who focus on developing new ideas and approaches to activism and community. This year’s one day conference will consist of powerful conversations, network ing opportunities, interactive workshops, an amazing keynote session, and a special cocktail reception to end the evening.

After two years of hosting this event virtually we are very excit ed to bring the experience back in person with firm COVID-19 prevention protocols. The con ference will return in a hybrid format, meaning online partic ipants will be able to engage with a limited selection of con tent during the event.

Interdisciplinary professionals from the Freidman Transgender

Center, Zucker Hillside Hospital mental health facility will join key partners such as Film Fatales and Dr. David Johns of the National Black Justice Coalition.

This year’s conference will also feature an opening plenary, cocktail reception, and numer ous networking opportunities. Musicians keiyaA, Nieri, and DJ Fade will make appearances.

keiyaA is a NYC-based sing er-songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist. @keiyaa Nieri is a pop artist, singer, and songwriter with roots in Europe but living in Los Angeles. @thisisnieri

THE RALLY

Demonstrate Our Queer Power and Righteous Anger

The NYC Pride Rally is back in person and comes at a time when conversation, education, and activism are needed most!

The first Rally occurred one month after the Stonewall Riots in June 1969, when 500 people gathered for a “Gay Power” demonstration in Washington Square Park and followed by a candlelight vigil in Sheridan Square. NYC Pride has continued this proud tradition by hosting the event in various locations throughout the city.

This year’s Rally is hosted by Raquel Willis and Sage DolanSandrino. Among this year’s speakers are Chase Strangio, Dominique Morgan, and Schuyler Bailar who were all recently announced as grand marshals at this year’s NYC Pride March.

Additional speakers include B. Hawk Snipes, Edafe Okoporo, Linda La, Shawnee Kish, Angy Rivera, The Okra Project, and the National LGBTQ+ Task Force.

The Task Force is driving Queer the Vote to educate and mobilize LGBTQ+ rights supporters during key election cycles and legislative assaults on the LGBTQ+ community.

Despite the historic gains the community has made, victories have come under threat as the United States has witnessed a pronounced acceleration of anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric and legislation, as well as aggressive voter suppression fueled chiefly by misinformation. In 2022, Queer the Vote will be on the frontlines as a dynamic vehicle for power building.

NYC Pride is proud to announce that The Rally will take place at The Battery at State Street and Battery Place, a larger venue than in years past that can accommodate more attendees, while also maintaining social distancing and making COVID-19 precautions a top priority. After two successful years of producing virtual rallies, NYC Pride will host this event in a hybrid format to ensure as many people as possible have access to this important event.

The 2022 Rally will take place on Friday, June 24th from 4 pm to 7 pm EDT at The Battery Park.

NYC Pride is excited to announce the fully in-person return of Youth Pride! Featuring Taylor Bennett and co-hosted by Ezra Michel and Ruba Wilson.

“We are thrilled to be back in-person to part ner with NYC Pride for this year’s celebration of Youth Pride.” said Eboni Munn, Director, Brand Marketing, Content & Creative at It Gets Better. “Building a sense of community with LGBTQIA+ teens and allies while uplifting and empowering the dynamic voices of Gen Zers aligns with the very core of our mission.”

This year’s Youth Pride comes at a time when queer affirmation is needed most for young LGBTQ+ people. The past several years have seen escalating attacks on LGBTQ+ youth and families, in particular transgender and nonbinary youth. States across the nation are passing legislation that censors inclusive curriculum in school, based on the infamous

“Don’t Say Gay” law in Florida.

Trans youth and their families are being direct ly targeted with laws that ban participation in sports and, even more devastating, laws that restrict access to trans-affirming health care and even extreme measures that criminalize a fam ily’s decision to support and affirm their child’s gender identity. NYC Pride is committed to cre ating safe spaces for queer youth to gather in community and to love and live their truth.

Youth Pride will take place at Rumsey Playfield at Central Park on Saturday June 25 at 1:00pm EDT. The event is free, but RSVP is required via nycpride.org/tickets. Youth Pride will also be streamed live at nycpride.org/youthpride.

AMBASSADORS

With a hat tip to current events, NYC Pride announced the o cial theme for this year’s 2022 event. Organizers said “Unapologetically Us” acknowledges the continued struggle and resilience of the community in the face of the global pandemic and the rise of hateful legislation targeting LGBTQ+ youth. NYC Pride 2022’s visual campaign features photographer Mike Ruiz’s stunning work which centers a multitude of queer, trans, and BIPOC folks and allies like Julian Gavino, Sicily Sierra, B. Hawk Snipes, Kirill Kabachenko, and others.

“Our community has been through tremendous hardships over the past few years, beginning with the pandemic, and continuing with a reckoning with social justice, threats to our democracy, and more recently armed conflict overseas,” Sandra Pérez, executive director of NYC Pride, says. “Compounding these struggles is the onslaught of legislation around the country that directly targets LGBTQIA+ individuals. In spite of these challenges and attacks, we are here to tell the country and the world: we will not be erased.

Perez adds, “We will continue to love and live our truth and be our full and complete selves – and we are not going to apologize for it.”

Mike Ruiz’s images of NYC Pride 2022’s ambassadors in these pages capture that attitude!
