PROPOSITIONS CHANGING SHATILA’S FATE?
REACTIONARY SHORT TERM PROPOSTITIONS
WIRELESS The paths of Shatila and other refugee camp are criss-crossed by a network of wires and water pipes, a dangerous combination. A few deaths have
GREEN SPACE Due to the high density and further demand for housing there are no green spaces in the camps
addition the low hanging wires interfere with phone signals inhibiting com munication within the camp boundary.
SHORT/MID TERM INTERVENTION
MID/LONG TERM INTERVENTION Bringing in a team to safely reinstall the wiring would drastically change the day to day lives of the inhabitants of the camps.
in addition to the possibility of food growing. Many rooves already have exterior access. If these are provided in containers they can be moved if a building is being upgraded
COLOUR ME CAMP The majority of the camps are not painted, exposed cinder blocks and concrete are predominant. However the few parts that are painted are noticably more looked after, a sentiment that was echoed by residents asked SHORT TERM INTERVENTION This aesthetic intervention works with the ‘broken window theory’. It is also very simple implementation project. Making camps more permanent by improving building structures for example can cause political issues. However this would only improve the experience
ALTERNATIVES TO CAMPS
ABANDONED BEIRUT Many buildings in Beirut and throughout Lebanon have been abandoned in an incomplete state. The concrete frameworks stand but they are useless spaces. PROPOSITION These structures could potentially be appropriated for housing refugees. The scattered nature of them would avoid the ‘slum’ that camps seem to inevitably become in urban environments. This would create mixed neighbourhoods similar to the mixed tenure properties being built in London today. The ‘Custom Build’ theories can also be applied as just the framework exists, the refugees can customise the space to suit their needs. building and not an expansive section of city is deserted, in addition to green sites not being used.

Shatila Vocational School Phased constuction plan Using appropriated existing spaces the school has a test bed for each vocation prior to constructing purpose built workshops. This ensures an integrated development of the institution and a soft launch for any unseen outcomes that are associated with ‘top down’ interventions.
Phase 0
-Removal of illegal dumping site and remnants of collapsed building -Appropriation of two empty spaces for carpentry workshops -Appropriation of one empty space for administration and civic centre. -Collaboration with existing mechanics for mechanical training
