Welcome to our new look Locker Room. We hope

you enjoy the articles and the photos bring back memories of good times at Hereworth. Thank you to everyone who has contributed to this edition of the Locker Room whether it is via articles, advertising or photos. I am now in my second year as Development Officer. I am really lucky to be working with such a great staff and to be part of the daily life of the school, both as a staff member and a parent. I have two sons; Finn in 5SJ, and Geordie who is due to start at Hereworth in 2014. Hereworth really does get into your veins! The Development Office has had a very busy past year. February saw the inaugural Hereworth 20/20 Celebrity Cricket Match take place. This was a fabulous event that showcased our School in the best fashion. This event couldn’t have taken place without the skills and endless hours of time given by a large number of the greater Hereworth community, thank you for your commitment and effort in ensuring that we started our “friend raising” stage in such a great way. Thank you to all our sponsors, of which there were many, the day wouldn’t have been such a fabulous success without them. A special mention must go to our Gold Sponsors, WilliamsWarn and Heartland Building Society who have both recently been in the news for their successes. We are proud to be affiliated with such great businesses.

Founders’ Day, this year was a very special celebration as we combined it with a memorial for Mr LS Rickard (Prof). Prof was a student (1936-1940) and then went on to teach at Hereworth (195484) Sadly Prof passed away 28 January 2012. Thank you to all of you who joined us and also those who sent in their memories of Prof, they have been recorded and will be displayed in the Founders’ Room. Next year’s Founders’ Day will be part of the 100 Year Wiremu Celebrations. 2013 sees the 100 Year Celebration of our great old building – Wiremu, or as many of you will know it – Big School. This isn’t Hereworth’s Centenary but a milestone that should be celebrated. More details will follow - mark the 9-11th August 2013 in your calendar. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who have called in, phoned or emailed me with snippets of info, photos, updated addresses of buddies and all the other support I get from our vast Hereworth network. Our doors are always open so feel free to drop in for a coffee and a tour and share your memories. This is always a highlight of my day! We welcome and encourage feedback, ideas and contributions to The Locker Room, please email me linda@hereworth.school.nz

FROM THE HEADMASTER Since the last edition of The Locker Room,

we have celebrated much success as a school community. Within the school environment we have new national champions, with the Under 10 Hereworth Futsal Team winning the title in Wellington mid-year. The Choir continued its success with three more top awards at the Hawke’s Bay Kids’ Sing Competition (the fifth year in a row they have achieved top awards). The Year 7 and 8 chess team won the Hawke’s Bay teams’ event for the third year in a row with the Year 5 and 6 team being the runners up in their section (only losing by half a point!). The 1st Xl cricket team has won the regional section of the nationwide Milo Cup for four out of the last five years and is currently doing well in this year’s competition. The 1st Xl hockey team has won the Hawke’s Bay Championship for five out of the last six years, finishing runners up this year. Our Head Boy, Tom Mackisack, won the Sir Peter Blake Medal for leadership - the second consecutive year our student leader has received this nationally recognised award. Staff member Tracey Kinloch-Jones was awarded a Primary Science Teacher Fellowship by the Royal Society of New Zealand. This fellowship has allowed Tracey to develop her knowledge and

leadership in specific aspects of science during the second half of this year. Geoff Styles won a Language Immersion Award towards the end of last year and has recently returned from a school in France where he developed his French language expertise and shared aspects of New Zealand culture with members of his adopted school community.

for their college years and beyond. We are exploring what it means to be a confident, connected, actively involved and lifelong learner with sound Christian and moral values in the today’s quickly evolving New Zealand and global societies. Once we have established a framework we will share this with the school community for discussion and input.

The Hereworth Parents’ Association coordinated a hugely successful French Affair Gala, with the money raised from this event going towards the replacement of our hockey/tennis turf. New Old Boy’s Association President, Matt Holden, worked with an enthusiastic team to coordinate Hereworth’s inaugural Celebrity 20/20 Cricket Match. This was a unique and well supported event that is to be repeated in the future. Funds raised went to St John’s Ambulance and to the upgrade of the main school driveway.

The school will undergo some significant change from the beginning of next year, Deputy Headmaster Gary Exeter is standing down from the position after 23 years of much valued and respected service. Gary is an inspiring teacher, who has always demanded the best from boys both in the classroom and on the sports field. We are thrilled we are not losing Gary’s talents - he is looking forward to working part-time in the school next year. Matt Webb has been appointed as Deputy Headmaster from the beginning of the 2013 school year. Matt is currently the Senior School Dean at King’s School in Auckland.

Georg C. Lichtenberg wrote “I cannot say whether things will get better if we change; what I can say is they must change if they are to get better.” We are currently fine-tuning and redefining a vision for the skills, knowledge, values and key competencies boys will need by the time they leave Hereworth (at the end of Year 8) that will help ensure they are best prepared

We look forward to the excitement of a huge weekend in August next year, as we celebrate Hereworth being on the Havelock North site for 100 years. Thank you all for your ongoing support.

FROM THE BOARD

The past year has again been a very successful one for Hereworth. The boys continue to achieve outstanding

results in all facets of their school life, be it educational, cultural or sporting. Particularly pleasing is the feedback we get from parents, many of whom marvel at the changes in their son while at Hereworth. The first half of 2012 has been a time of change for the Board. Claire Hague who had been an Old Boys’ appointment to the Board resigned due to increased work commitments. At the time of writing this a replacement is yet to be appointed.

Andrew Thomas

Tom Hamilton spent 4½ years on the Board and made a huge contribution. Due to him relocating he has resigned from the Board. Tom has been replaced by Frank Fillary. Frank has a background in education and was ordained to the Priesthood in 2008. Brian Dawson, the current vicar of St. Luke’s, has moved to Wellington. Brian had been on the Board for 18 months and his wisdom and sense of humour will be missed. The Diocese is in the process of appointing Brian’s replacement. With Tom’s resignation and a less than full complement of members, the Board decided to delay appointing a new Chairman until all positions were filled and we are hoping this will be done in the near future. In the meantime I have been filling the role of Acting Chairman.

Stuart Signal

Ross Scrymgeour has completed a series of presentations on educating boys to communities within the school catchment, including Wairoa, Taupo, Dannevirke, Waipukurau, Napier, Taradale and Havelock North, with Masterton to come. The attendance at these has been outstanding and while these presentations have been about educating boys and not Hereworth, they have been invaluable exposure for the school. We are very appreciative of Ross’s efforts on this front. Will de Lautour

The Old Boys’ Association is receiving some renewed energy under the guidance of Matt Holden and a solid core of “younger” old boys; as a Board we are very appreciative of their efforts. Linda Calder, the Foundation Development Manager has made huge gains in re-connecting with Old Boys’ and Friends of the school in her first year in the role. The Board sees Linda’s role as critical to the future success of the school as we move towards ensuring that Hereworth has a continued solid financial base and ability to continue to evolve with changing times. Any school needs to constantly be looking forward and facilities maintained and improved. In line with this the Board is currently looking at options for a new Gymnasium/Auditorium and we hope to have these well developed by the time of the celebration next year. As with all capital works, this will require a major fund raising effort and we will be working through this over the coming months.

Frank Fillary

We continue to rely on the support of the Hereworth community for the successful operation of the school and thank all those involved. As always, the school doors are open to all, so if you are an Old Boy, prospective parent or friend, please feel free to contact the School and visit at any time. We look forward to seeing many of you in 2013 for the 100 years of Wiremu celebrations.

BOARDING LIFE

Boarding life is a big part of the beating heart of Hereworth School

and the traditions of the past and the needs for the future are well addressed in the Boarding House. In recent years the requirements of the boarding family have changed. We believe families are looking for the need to ensure quality time with their son, quality boarding programmes and a safe and pleasant environment. It must also provide very strong pastoral care for the boys and allow the same opportunities and access similar to those at home. Hereworth boarding has changed to meet those needs and will continue to do so. In 2012 the Boarding House took on a new appearance and environment to accommodate the boys. We changed the physical look by removing the bunks and adding couches, bean bags and bookshelves to the dorms. The boys made their dorms feel more like home by adding their own personal touches to their areas. We also added a lockable bedside locker for each boy where they keep their personal belongings (ipods, gaming devices, etc) securely locked away. The boys now have access to digital tools for both work and fun throughout the day and it gives them an opportunity to relax for short periods in the evening.

Boarding culture is very strong with more responsibility being placed on the boys in the day to day running. Many boys simply step into areas of leadership when required and genuinely take care of their boarding environment and each other. The additions of responsibility have also meant we have been able to “flex a little with the procedures as the boys are showing initiative. When in the boarding house you have the feeling of one big family home with forty brothers in it rather than a boarding house. It has a culture that is truly enjoyable for both boys and staff. In 2013 we will see more significant changes to both the physical environment and the daily running. We are looking at a new lounge for the boys that will allow them more space, and a change in the organisation of their clothing storage and bathroom to better suit the boys’ needs. This will create much better use of the current space and accommodate the needs of the boys and their families. As we continue to gain a better insight into the modern boarding family we will continue to adapt weekend programmes, day to day and general running procedures to best suit the needs of the boys while ensuring their pastoral care remains at the forefront of our planning and organisation. It is a pleasure to be involved with the Hereworth boarding family and its wider family members. I am looking forward to ensuring the positive growth and strong culture develops while building its own traditions and future in Hereworth School.

FROM THE FOUNDATION

The broad objective of our School’s Foundation is to anticipate and

provide funding for the needs of our boys, which is over and above what is provided by school fees and government grants. Funds from sources other than fees are needed to maintain a creative and exciting centre of learning that is the essence of Hereworth. Hereworth has been extremely fortunate in the past as we have been supported by a strong philanthropic community. The School relies on the support of the greater Hereworth community to assist in providing the best educational facilities possible for our boys, both current and those in the future, to help us ensure that we remain an Independent School and that we can keep our school fees from dramatically increasing.

We have all benefitted, or are benefitting from the shade of the trees that others have planted, now it’s time to plant our own trees.

There are many ways you can make a difference to future generations at Hereworth — through donations, sponsorships, scholarships and bequests. New initiatives will be formalised in the next year including an annual giving programme and a bequest programme. We would like to take this opportunity to thank our Friends, Parents, Old Boys and Supporters who have contributed to Hereworth, be it through donations or in kind. Your generosity and support are greatly appreciated. Should you like more information on contributing to Hereworth please contact Linda Calder, Development Officer, (06) 877 8138 or linda@hereworth.school.nz to discuss further.

FROM THE old boys' association

It gives me great pleasure to write a few words, as President of the Old

Boys’ Association; it doesn’t seem that long ago I was still earning my old boy status by wearing the green blazer. I am proud to have two sons in that position now... and they are loving Hereworth.

Kieran Morgan, Bay de Lautour, Tom Mackisack

With the Olympics in full swing, I had a thought - how many Olympians has Hereworth had; the answer is 5, so far... C’mon boys live that dream. So it was a privilege to have Adrian White – Equestrian in Rome 1960 and Tokyo 1964, and Chris Nilsson – Rowing in Munich 1972 to come back to their old school and talk to the boys about their Hereworth and Olympic experiences. This has been captured on film along with interviews done by the boys – special moments recorded forever. Chatting to an old boy earlier this year and celebrating the success of the 20/20 Cricket match, he said to me ‘...well done on the event and the time that everyone put in behind it’. My reply was ‘I am able to direct some time towards Hereworth, rather than a financial contribution’ (mind you school fees x2 must count!). ‘Time is more valuable’, was the reply. How true this is, and at the end of the day we can all make time.

Founders’ Day celebrations

hoba committee members President: Matt Holden Secretary: Jeremy Cranswick Treasurer: Jeremy Cranswick

Hereworth is a great school, and we can make it an even greater school, just by getting behind it and giving ‘some time’. The Old Boys’ Association and the Hereworth Supporters’ Club (HSC) are there for the school and you. The greatest way you can support them is by getting involved and offering a little time. This can even be on a social note, by supporting a school function that is coming up; the Old Boy’s summer sports day in November this year, next year is the 4x4 in March, the 100 year celebration of Wiremu in August and the 20/20 Cricket in November.

Members: Richard King, David Todd, Sam Howard, Duncan Smith, Andrew MacLeod, Richard Kinnear, David Kerr

The Founders’ Day dinner was a great night, but there was room for more... these events are well run and there is a mountain of work done behind the scenes by a great team of supporters and helpers – support them, the school and then we are supporting the future of Hereworth.

OLD BOY PROFILES DAVID MOSSMAN (1953 - 56) David received a QSM for his services to veterinary science earlier this year and he says this was a tribute

to his many colleagues over the years. The Hawke’s Bay born and bred former Hereworth student started his veterinary vocation studying across the ditch at the University of Queensland in Brisbane. David, his father and his grandson have all attended Hereworth and he still holds the high jump record!

JONTY KELT (1983 - 84) Since leaving Hereworth I attended Kings College and Otago University (BCom in Finance & Marketing,

BA in Philosophy). My first job helped set up Macquarie Bank in Auckland before moving to London where I founded an internet technology business in the late 90s. I was then part of the founding team of a sponsor-driven sports and entertainment business in Shanghai, China, where we toured events such as Cats, Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables & Kenny G. In 2004 I returned to London to run the international business of an American technology business which was purchased by Google in 2008. I moved to New York City and started my current eCommerce technology company Group Commerce in 2010 which today has 140 staff in USA and UK. I’m married with two young children Jack (2.5 yrs) and Phoebe (1 yr), and enjoy playing golf, tennis and kitesurfing.

HARRY GREIG (2004 - 07) The highlight of the past year would be the success of my Chamber Music Group – “Dreamscapes Quartet”.

“It takes lot of time, effort, hard work and failure before you can succeed.” Harry Greig

In late 2011 my friend Marcus Jackson started composing a piece for violin, flute, cello and piano which could be performed at the 2012 Hawke’s Bay Chamber Music Competition in June. After we won the Hawke’s Bay Competition, the piece won the composition category and the group was invited to play at the National Finals in Auckland. After performing to a near packed Town Hall and being recorded by Radio New Zealand, we were thrilled to win the Stratham Award - the award for the best national performance of a New Zealand Work. It was certainly a result to be proud of after the many months of rehearsing. An important lesson that was drilled into me from my early days at Hereworth was that nothing will ever be handed to you on a plate. It takes lot of time, effort, hard work and failure before you can succeed. Playing the violin for me has been a way in which I can constantly challenge myself and work for impossible perfection. I think that life is all about challenges really and it’s how we approach these challenges that determines our success.

FAREWELL FROM GARY EXETER

As from the beginning of the new school

year 2013, I will no longer be the Deputy Headmaster of Hereworth, a position I have held for 23 years. What a journey! A voyage really—one of discovery, adventure and learning, one of humour, friendship and collegiality. Throw in a pinch of disagreement and controversy and the mixture is complete. The experience is not over however as I will be carrying on in some capacity in 2013. Retirement is calling but is doing so with a soft voice and has little appeal at the moment. The most memorable recollection of the past 23 years has been that of change. Society has changed and Hereworth is quietly reflecting that change. Early impressions are very clear in an otherwise fading memory. There was a strong sense of discipline. Sometimes I felt that it was a case of discipline for discipline’s sake and relationship skills were of secondary importance. However there were excellent

WE CREATE THE SPACE TO LEARN AND GROW As experts in learning areas, we create inspiring spaces so every student feels comfortable, inspired and motivated to learn.

teachers here from my first day, who have skilfully led the way in redirection of behaviour management techniques. While not all change is progress, the analysis of change and the benefits it can bring to the boys is an exciting process for us all. Hereworth is a happy place. There is the joy of challenge always in the air. The sense of best fit competition and accompanying success breeds confidence, contentment and a fermenting humour that bubbles to the surface in regular patterns. What a privilege it is to be part of that. Failure is a welcome companion. The old cliché of learning from one’s mistakes and failures is true but having the skills and knowledge to self-correct and turn defeat into victory in subsequent efforts is the making of many boys. The staff room has been a haven of intellectual debate and educational theory. The teachers are rabid in their desire to get up there at interval and lunch time to initiate or continue an in-depth

investigation of the latest ERO report or what Professor John Hattie is currently expounding regarding boys’ education. Our best teaching is often done after these exhilarating sessions. At least I think that is what happens there—note my earlier reference to a fading memory. I can recall with some certainty a quiz or two and an occasional earning of the right to the afternoon off which interestingly, no-one has ever taken. What a wonderful den of collegiality, support and simple fun. Enough looking back. It is tomorrow that is important. With the present management team, Hereworth is in great shape to meet the challenges of the future. Maybe the faint aroma of a triumphant past will waft through the staffroom in future years and help point the way to even more success. Perhaps someone will take that elusive afternoon off—sometime.

IN FOND MEMORY OF LS RICKARD (PROF)

Lawrence Rickard was a student at Hereworth from 1936-1940 and was Dux of the school for three consecutive years from 1938. "Prof" went on to teach at Hereworth from the second term of 1954 to 1984.

“Saddle the Horse! The innkeeper has been struck by lightning!”

team. Prof had a complete collection of the Wisden Cricket Almanac and an encyclopaedic knowledge of it. I learnt a couple of important things about cricket (and life) from Prof. As you commenced your run-up to bowl he would bellow “Hating the batsman’s guts, Curtis?” – “Yes, Sir!” would be the reply. And a noticeably more challenging delivery was made. After revelling in one’s success upon hitting a six he would frequently annul any boundary made off the next ball accusing you of being “drunk” (or “staggering around with your guts hanging over your knees”).

On 28 January 2012 Lawrence Sandston

Rickard (or “Prof” as he was affectionately known) passed away, or “shuffled off this mortal coil” as he was fond of saying. He was my Form 2 teacher at Hereworth School. The last of the dinosaurs in terms of prep-school teachers, with an incredibly gruff manner and not one to spare the rod. He was very proud of the history and traditions of Hereworth School and was himself a pupil there. My first direct encounter with Prof was after being selected for the “Colts” cricket

His questions often carried with them lavish prizes, none of which were ever delivered if I recall. ”For a pair of seaman’s boots” or “For a case of Glen Fiddich” – a little obscure admittedly but fascinating to a young boy nonetheless. A common cry was “Saddle the Horse! The innkeeper has been struck by lightning!” – to this day I have no idea what that means but it often followed a surprise correct answer from the most unlikely of boys. One of my Dad’s favourite Prof stories (Arthur Curtis – he was Headmaster at the time) took place under the dormitory block where we played cricket with bats and tennis balls. Some lad did a beautiful cover drive which caught Prof fully on the back of the head as he walked past. He

immediately fell to the ground and lay motionless. A stunned silence fell over the group of boys who were sure they’d killed Prof. When a brave soul managed the courage to approach the pole-axed body Prof immediately got up and walked off without saying a word. I vividly remember him visiting the “Headmaster’s house” where we lived, and Prof asking “Is Curtis J.P in?” He was to bestow on me a great honour. I was to feed his beloved axolotls. He had supplied me with scotch fillet steak to feed them, it had to be cut up and waved in front of them as if it were alive and they would suddenly lurch forward and snatch it from the tongs. He inspired in me from an early age a great passion for science, discovery and learning in general. He was in equal measures ferociously scary, and brilliantly funny. His ill-fitting, old suits and Marylebone Cricket Club tie remain etched in my memory. I still fondly recall how he explained how I would know when I had worked out the answer to one of his puzzling questions: “Curtis, it will hit you like a slap in the guts with a wet spade on a frosty morning.” RIP Prof – you were held in high regard and are still often quoted by a great many of us.

HEREWORTH PARENTS' ASSOCIATION We have had an exceptionally eventful past year

with an extremely successful Gala. This saw the whole Hereworth community come together, raising $30,000 for the School. These funds have been allocated to re-surfacing the astro turf on the tennis courts. In August the annual Quiz night was held. This year saw an Olympic themed evening. This event is a highlight on the calendar and the trophy is always hotly contested. Once again the “Reigning Champs” took out the coveted award. We hope to see all the teams and more back again next year.

In the past year the HPA has contributed to many different areas of school life - new choral gowns, sports gear, camping equipment, robotics and gazebos to name a few. Our thanks to all of those who have put in their time, hearts and money to make all of these events the fabulous success they are. Any parent is welcome and encouraged to attend the monthly meetings, this is a great opportunity for parents to hear about the heart of Hereworth and to share their comments.

100 year celebration

In August 1913 Heretaunga School opened its doors on our present

day site, so it is only fitting that next year we celebrate Wiremu or Big Schools 100th Birthday. This is cause for celebration and we invite you to join us on the weekend of 9-11 August 2013, when we will hold a series of events at School to mark the occasion. The weekend’s festivities are still being finalised but there will be registration on the Friday evening and Saturday morning, school tours and a prep school rugby match. Saturday night will see the school come alive with a fabulous evening event. So get a group of your old mates together and join us to celebrate the past, the present and the future of Hereworth. Please put the date in your diary and we will be in touch early next year with more details. We look forward to seeing you there. Information will be updated on the school website www.hereworth.school.nz
