+Mr H Elijah Manso 281/2 was a “star” from the time that he was born. Due to his attractive phenotype Elijah was recognized as the 2014 Reserve National Champion and 2015 International Champion. We have used Elijah successfully with his offspring being named as champions as well as topping our sales. Due to the show ring success of Elijah’s offspring, he reached the status of ABBA Register of Renown. Elijah is sired by +Mr H Maddox Manso 684, a bull who will go down in history as one of the breeds most influential sires. Elijah’s dam, +Lady H Matilda Manso 731, was a former show winner and Register of Renown donor that resulted from some of our foundation genetics. Although Elijah continues to be used around the world due to the quality of his calves, it has been found that his daughters are one of his strong suits. It should be noted that the 2021 ABBA Show Bull of the Year and many time champion Mr. Bar D MN Ghost Rider is out of an Elijah daughter. Elijah is not only a sire of champions and superior daughters, but he also ranks in the top ½ of the breed for ALL of the economically relevant traits of WW, YW, Milk, REA, and Marbling making him an ALL AROUND SIRE!

Mr H Albertazzi Rojo 315/2 was the 2015 International Grand Champion Red Bull. Not only does this stout built, growthy, deep ribbed, and heavy muscled red bull have the phenotype desired, but he is also backed by one of the most proven pedigrees in the breed. The sire of Albertazzi is the iconic +TJF Mr. Smokin Gun 109/7 while his dam, +Lady H Jazz 281, was the many time show winner and a proven dam with 13 progeny to her credit including a National Champion, an International Champion and two Register of Renown Cows. Show ring wins and pedigrees are good indicators of the future potential of a sire, but we believe his offspring are the true test. We have seen numerous outstanding offspring by Albertazzi, especially in Mexico. One of his most notable progeny in the USA is our up and coming herd sire Mr. H Sargent Rojo 499/1. Mr H Albertazzi Rojo 315/2 will continue to be used widely around the globe due to his superior build, proven production and pedigree.

Mr H Morton Manso 964/7 is one of our more moderate and BEEFY sires. Morton was one of the first bulls that resulted from the “Golden Cross” of combining +Mr H Maddox Manso 684 with the daughters of the 2001 International Champion +BNA Double Take Manso 229/8. It should also be noted that Morton shares the same dam as Mr H Polaris Manso 73/9. Like many of our herd sires, Morton enjoyed a successful show career accumulating a reserve division title at the National Show and a Grand Champion title at the Louisiana Sugar Classic. As a result of his outcross pedigree and moderate build, an interest in Morton was sold to Carlos Lee and then a semen interest was sold in our 2010 “Night of Elegance” Sale for $50,000. Morton has gone on to produce great offspring, with one of his sons being recognized with an International Reserve Grand Champion title in 2013. We have used Morton on our heifers due to his moderate Birth Weight and above average genetic indicators for Growth and the valuable Carcass traits.

Reno was shown successfully, with him picking up division titles at BOTH the National & International Shows. We love the pigmentation of Reno, his powerful phenotype, and performance figures that chart positive for 12 of the 16 measured traits! This sire has been used successfully in Costa Rica and on a limited basis in the USA, with one of his first calves being named the Reserve Grand Champion at the Louisiana Junior Brahman Association State Show. Mr H Vega Manso 301/2 is a bull that I reach for when it’s time to straighten a topline, shorten a bull’s sheath or a heifer’s navel. He is what I refer to as a “closer”. Mr H Vega Manso 301/2 can take an ordinary Brahman cow and produce a good calf. He can take a good cow and produce a great calf! Vega 301/2 has done just that for ranches around the world. Mr H Oxford Rojo 604/4 is one of our most recognized red sires due to the success that he has played around the world. When Oxford was born, we knew that he was special due to his color, moderate frame size, muscle, depth, and bone. The Secret Weapon! Mr H Titus Manso 122/7 is not a bull that we showed or promoted very heavily until we saw his first calves. We should not have been surprised by the “sire power” that Titus offers with his pedigree, performance, and phenotype. Titus is the product of two Register of Renown parents, +JDH Mr. Manso 854/4 who has literally sired champions around the world, and +Lady H Principe Sweet Manso 757 who has produced 48 offspring in the USA and Panama including a Register of Renown Cow and National Champion Bull. We would have to call Titus our most performance-oriented bull as he charts positive for 14 of the 16 measured traits including a -0.1 BW EPD that is validated by 65-73 lbs. calves and a top 20% ranking for both Marling and Ribeye Area. To complete this valuable package, study the stoutness, rib shape, muscle, and overall eye appeal of this sire. We think Titus could be the next “Big Deal”!

High Peformance Moderate Frame Carcass Sire Show Champion Breed Character Renowned Ancestry Proven Sire

On September 18, 2018, we were blessed with a bouncing bull calf that has been a lot of fun to show and breed. He certainly created a lot of interest around the world. Mr H Pride of Maddox Manso 684/8 is what we consider to be the top son of the legendary +Mr H Maddox Manso 684. The dam to “Pride” is a former show winner and one of our all-time proven donors +Lady H Adelyn Manso 55/9, who has produced close to 40 registered offspring including 11 show winners and multiple herd sires and donors. Not only has Mr H Pride of Maddox Manso 684/8 been a favorite of judges, he is also backed by proven genetics with every animal in the first two generations of his pedigree reaching the ABBA Register of Renown, and his powerful build and performance predictors have attracted cattleman from around the globe. “Pride” is moderate framed, stout structured, big bodied, heavy muscled, with a long and level topline, and a tight sheath. Progressive Brahman breeders and those from other breeds that are looking to incorporate new genetics appreciate the combination of Growth and Carcass that “Pride” offers. The early offspring from this young sire indicate that Mr H Pride of Maddox Manso 684/8 will pass along his superiority. The future should be fun with the success of this great sire and his offspring!

As a calf, Mr H Bubba Rojo 66/7 was the 2018 International Grand Champion Red Bull. This sire was selected champion by many of the most respected judges in the industry due to his practical build, being a moderate frame, heavy structure, big body, thick hind quarter, and an attractive package. It should not be surprising that Bubba’s first calves have been named champion around the world due to their superiority. Breeders who are looking for outcross genetics will appreciate that Bubba is unrelated to many of today’s popular lines and is backed be a pedigree that combines some of the most foundation genetics from HK Cattle & 3X Ranch. The progressive breeders who are looking to not only add a powerful phenotype and an outcross pedigree to their program will also appreciate that Bubba produces low birth weight, rapid growing offspring, and daughters that should be heavy milkers based on his Milk EPD. Time will tell, but we think Bubba has the pieces to be a legendary sire!

Visual Evaluation of Brahman Bulls When visually evaluating bulls (or cows), I want them to look like Brahmans. Gray hair coats if gray, red hair coat if Red. They have to look like Brahmans. Next, I like to begin on the ground with the feet and legs and then move up the body. I want to watch them standing still and then walking on a flat surface to see how they place their feet and walk. The front feet and forequarter are the steering mechanism while the hind feet and hindquarters are the power source. All four feet should be the same size and have evenly sized toes that are similar in shaped without any corkscrewing or overlapping. Small toes are a genetic issue and should be avoided. The front feet should be parallel to each other while the hind feet should be turned out about 20 degrees. In the show ring we try to make both of the front and hind hooves parallel but it’s not natural. Going up the legs from the hooves, they should meet the pasterns at about a 45-degree angle (perhaps a little higher in the front feet). Avoid bulls that have very upright front pasterns or very low (“coon footed”) hind pasterns to avoid lameness. Observing from the side at a walk, the bull’s hind foot should cover his forefoot’s footprint. This is the best indication of overall structural correctness. The bull should walk smoothly without any sign of limping or head bobbing that might indicate lameness. Observed from the side, the forelegs should be straight and the hindlegs should have a slight crook in them, so the hind feet are placed just a little under the bull. Hindlegs that are too straight or too crooked can cause lameness and reduce interest in breeding. Evaluated from the rear, the widest part of the bull should be through the middle of the rump or round and his hind legs should be wide and squarely spaced. His hocks may turn in slightly (just like his hind feet turn out slightly). Viewed from the front, the bull should have smooth shoulders and his elbow joints should not be prominent. Working up the body, the bull should be long bodied and deep from his chest to his barrel (where his stomach is located) but not wastey or “potbellied”. He should also be wide through his chest and barrel. Often the terms used are “deep chested” and “well sprung ribs” to express this desirable condition. It is easy to find outlier bulls that are “short bodied” (not long) but often harder to look at two long bodied bulls and decide which is longest. If you can’t do that, both bulls are good. Next, I want the bull to have a strong topline. Brahman bulls have large humps (a valuable breed characteristic) and which makes the topline difficult to evaluate. My recommendation is to evaluate the topline from where you can see it back to the bull’s hip. Cattle that that have a large dip in the middle of the top of their back are thought to be less well muscled. The topline can be evaluated for its length and width as well as straightness. Brahmans naturally have a hip somewhat higher than their shoulder and usually higher for their age than nonBrahman or Bos taurus breeds. This can give them a higher frame score and overall larger physical appearance. Don’t evaluate Brahman bulls on hip size alone, look at the entire bull. Also, Brahman cattle tend to have a greater slope from their hips (“hooks”) to their tailbones (“pins”) than Bos taurus breeds. In my opinion, this may actually improve calving ease and is a characteristic of the breed. Next, I want to evaluate the head and neck, especially the head. The male sex hormone testosterone shapes the head in the bull just as the female hormone estrogen shapes the heifer’s head. The head should look balanced in size (not too big nor too small) and will be squarer in shape than a heifer’s or especially a cow’s. Ears will be more prominent, horns or scurs may be present, and the hair (Gray or Red, depending on the genetic color of the Brahman) will be darker in intensity and pigment. Eyes should be wide set and clear and the nostrils should be evenly sized, spaced, and shaped. In my opinion, the nose pigmentation should be solid black. The mouth should have upper and lower jaws that meet perfectly when the mouth is closed. If the upper or lower mandibles are shorter than the opposite, that is a severe genetic problem that should be avoided. The neck will be shorter and thicker than those in cows.

Joe C. Paschal Livestock Specialist Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Corpus Christi, Texas j-paschal@tamu.edu

The two last points of interest are the sheath and the scrotum. They probably should be discussed first but since all breeding age bulls should have a breeding soundness examination (BSE) conducted on them (and a trichomoniasis test too), any real issues in this area will be uncovered with the BSE. However, I want to relate my thoughts in general on physical evaluation. In evaluating the sheath of Brahman (indeed any breed) bulls, I look at three factors. How far down does the sheath extend, what is the angle of the sheath and finally, how large is the opening of the prepuce (where his penis emerges from his sheath)? Long ago I was taught that the bull’s sheath should extend no lower than an imaginary line drawn from the bull’s hocks forward to his knees. The sheath could touch the line but should not extend below this imaginary A – B line. Second, the angle of the sheath drawn to meet the back of the front legs should fall no lower than the back of the front pasterns. Finally, the bull’s preputial opening should be small and tight, realizing that older bulls will have larger openings than younger bulls. Again, in my opinion, bulls need to be acceptable in two out of these three factors. If they are acceptable in all three that is perfect. The last physical evaluation is the scrotum. If a bull passes his BSE that indicates that he is fertile and sound (there is a physical evaluation in the BSE as well as the reproductive evaluation). I prefer bulls that are acceptable in scrotal circumference (“acceptable” depends on the age of the bull but a yearling bull should be at least 30 centimeters). Scrotal circumferences that are larger than the minimum are desirable in that they are related to reduced age at puberty in the bull’s sons and daughters and make for larger storage areas. However, as they are an indicator of maturing rate and mature size, I don’t suggest selecting for really large circumferences. Next, both testicles inside the scrotum should be the same size and shape and not too hard, too soft or too warm to the touch as those could indicate illness or injury (but likely your veterinarian will catch that). Last, observe the bull’s ability to raise and lower his scrotum (and testicles). For hot climate adapted breeds like the Brahman, it is critical that he be able to reduce the effects of body heat and ambient temperature. Of course, on very cold days, he will need to be able to do the opposite too!

Mr H Kelton Manso 308/9 is a moderate framed, stout built, heavy muscled, deep ribbed, long bodied, and level made bull. This superior made herd sire prospect has been shown successfully, picking up Reserve Division wins at both the 2021 International & State Fair of Texas Shows. As one might expect based on his phenotype, Kelton is sired by JDH Turkana Manso 607/6, a bull who has done both Heritage Cattle Company & J.D. Hudgins, Inc. - J. Forgason Divison a great job as validated by him being recognized with an International Grand Champion Get of Sire title and his offspring excelling in the show ring and receiving the top dollar when sold. The dam to Kelton is a young donor who is backed by a proven pedigree that combines the National & International Champion JDH Clanton De Manso and a daughter of the Maternal Performance Sire (=)JDH Ridell Manso. To further add value to this outstanding bull, Kelton charts positive for 13 of the 16 measured performance traits which includes a moderate Birth Weight EPD, extreme Growth, and superior Carcass Quality.

Mr H Able Manso 307/9 is one of the most exciting young sires in the breed that has the components to be a breed influencer. Most appreciate the build of this young sire that is sound structured, stout made, big bodied, heavy muscled, and ideal for breed character. Due to his superior phenotype, Able was selected as the Reserve Grand Champion at the 2020 All American as well as division champion at a number of ABBA Open Shows. In addition to his show ring success, it should be noted that Able was the Overall High Scanning (carcass ultrasound) Bull at the 2020 All American and as might be expected, ranks in the top 1/3 of the breed for REA & Marbling and in the top half of the breed for WW, YW, and Milk. Mr H Able Manso 307/9 was one of the first calves to be sired by JDH Turkana Manso 607/6, who has been siring winners and sale toppers for us. At first glance, Mr H Malone Manso 326/9 will make you feel like you have walked in to a department store you can’t afford to shop in. This incredibly masculine yet handsome bull has always attracted a crowd. I can remember several collegic judging teams commenting that they had never seen a Brahman bull this good! It is fun to see the initial reaction of visitiors and Brahman ethusiasts when they see him for the first time. Mr H Malone 326/9 is a full brother to the 2021 International Grand Champion Bull, Mr H Pride of Maddox Manso 684/8. Of course, Malone offers many of the same characteristics as his brother in terms of a proven pedigree that is backed by all Register of Renowns in the first two generations and a progressive performance profile. Malone is the result of crossing two of the most proven animals in our herd, +Mr H Maddox Manso 684 and +Lady H Adelyn Manso 55/9. In comparison to his brother, Malone is growthier and offers a more progressive Marbling EPD that ranks in the top 5% of the breed. When you drive the pastures at Heritage Cattle Company, one thing you will notice is that we prefer medium sized cattle. The majority of our herd bulls are between 2,200 to 2,400 pounds. Our mature cows average 1,300 to 1,500 pounds. To keep our cattle at this frame size, occassionally we incorporate larger genetics. We are excited about this young sire for just that. Mr H Highland Manso 363/0 is one of our all-time high performing bulls. Study the genetics behind this guy and you will see the Reserve National Champion and popular sire BRC Dutton, +Mr. V8 458/7 “Noble”, the two-time International Champion +Miss V8 21/8 “Boom Shakalaka”, the International Champion +Mr. V8 960/5, and the legendary +Lady H Mariana Manso 812... these are all in the first two generations! To further add to the value of this young sire prospect, he ranks in the top 15% of the breed for Growth and 1/3 for Milk EPD, indicating that he should be a herd influencer through the infusion of his genetics. The outstanding pedigree and performance of Taiton should not overshadow his superior build that is growthy, stylish, big boned, heavy muscled, and deep ribbed.

Basics of Carcass Ultrasound in Beef Cattle Tommy Perkins, Ph.D., PAS If you are a producer who is interested in having cattle scanned or are already doing so, the following basics of ultrasound should be of interest to you. Ultrasound is currently being used as an indicator trait for carcass merit of an animal and is a very useful tool to determine genetic differences among potential breeding animals. All ultrasound data included in the American Brahman Breeders Association database must be collected by an Ultrasound Guidelines Council (UGC) certified technician and processed in a UGC centralized ultrasound processing (CUP) certified laboratory. All images must be collected by a UGC certified technician and interpreted by a UGC certified laboratory. Once the collected images have been interpreted by the CUP lab, the results are submitted to the ABBA for EPD analysis. More about UGC can be found at ultrasoundguidelinescouncil.org. Ultrasound provides a non-invasive technique to collect carcass data without having to harvest the animal. The collected ultrasound data is used to calculate expected progeny differences (EPDs) for ribeye area and percent intramuscular fat (IMF or marbling). The calculated EPDs can then be used for selection of potential breeding animals. The ultrasound information can then be used to identify individual animals that possess inferior and/or superior carcass merit. Caution should be used in selecting animals solely on one superior ultrasound value. Use of a single trait outlier (for example, a high IMF – 7%) may lead to selection of many negative traits at the same time (for example, smaller ribeye and less efficient animal). It is the responsibility of the breeder to have a squeeze chute that has easy access to a grounded 110 electrical outlet and access to a set of scales to weigh the animals. It is best if the chute is covered so that is out of direct sunlight and/or rain. This may be as simple as placing a tarp over the chute. The breeder must also provide a complete ultrasound barn sheet that includes the ID, certificate number, birthdate, Figure 1. Cross sectional image of 12-13th rib area. weight, etc. of all cattle being scanned that day. It is also the responsibility of the breeder to correctly identify the proper contemporary group for each animal scanned. All animals must be of the same age (within 60 days), of the same sex (all bulls, all heifers, or all steers), fed the same feed and managed the same throughout (same vaccinations, etc.). For example, it is not appropriate to place a yearling heifer that has been fed for show in the same contemporary group with a heifer that is only being fed hay and little grass. The ultrasound barn sheet can be requested from the ABBA office. It should be noted, that an animal will not show up on the ultrasound barnsheet if it’s weaning weight has not been submitted to ABBA. All bulls, heifers and steers that have a registration number should be scanned when they are near a year of age. All cattle should be weighed on the day of ultrasounding. However, breeders have seven days (before or after the scanning date) to get the weight. Additionally, all cattle in the same contemporary group must be weighed on the same day.

48

In general, technicians charge $15 to $25 per head for ultrasounding. They may also charge a set-up fee, a mileage fee, and/or hotel costs. The fee is often based on the number of animals to be scanned. The ultrasound technician will bring all of the ultrasound equipment (scanning console, transducer, computer, scanning software, etc.). Most technicians will bring their own scanning vegetable oil, paper towels, cleaning solutions, and multi-electrical outlet. Good technicians will also have a good livestock blower (air) and/or clippers in hand to remove all dirt and debris from the scanning sight for the best results possible.

Figure 2. 12-13th rib longitudinal image for intramuscular fat.

Three different images are collected by the ultrasound technician. The first one (Figure 1) is a cross sectional image of the ribeye muscle between the 12th and 13th ribs (the last two ribs) of the animal. Fat thickness and ribeye area are measured from this particular image. The second image (Figure 2) taken is a longitudinal image of the 11th-12th-13th rib region for estimation of percent intramuscular fat (IMF or marbling). The technician must take at least four images in this location to send to the CUP lab. The last image is collected between the hook and pin bones parallel to the backbone. This image is used to measure the amount of rumpfat on the animal. Research has shown that there are no statistical differences in the ultrasound measures on an animal right or left side. Therefore, the ultrasound technician can scan from either side of the animal. Scanning side is generally determined by the chute set up and the outside elements (sun, rain, etc.

Fat thickness measures should range from 0.20 inches to 0.50 inches. Any values less than these may not be measuring true genetic differences between animals. Anything greater than 0.50 inches is merely costing you extra money in over feeding. Overfeeding females at this stage of their life may permanently impair reproductive performance and/or milking ability. Ribeye area measurements should range from 10.0 to 17.0 square inches in yearling cattle. Adjusted IMF values should be 2.5% or higher for bulls and 3.0 or higher for females. Steers should scan equivalent to heifers (3.0 or higher). Cattle fed to a 0.50 inch fat thickness level will be fed adequately to express their full genetic potential for marbling. Thus, animals fed to 0.90 inches of fat will not statistically express more IMF if they don’t have the genetics to produce more marbling. Rump fat is a bit more interesting to me. In general, rumpfat should be equal to or greater than the 12th rib fat measurement. I believe that rumpfat should be approximately twice the level of the 12th rib fat measurement in Brahman cattle. For example, an animal with 0.20 inches of rib fat thickness should have between 0.20 and 0.40 inches of rumpfat. Lastly, ultrasound is used to sort and market fat cattle into optimum harvest groups. This is done to prevent overfeeding of the cattle and will reduce or prevent Yield Grade 4 and 5 carcasses. Feedlot scanning uses the ultrasound scan weight, ribeye area and fat thickness to determine the optimum harvest endpoint in order to provide more profit for the producer. Feedlot cattle are generally scanned at re-implant time or no less than 30 to 90 days before harvest.

Lady H Finley Manso 337/9 is an instrumental part of the 2021 International Grand Champion Get of Sire, sired by JDH Turkana Manso 607/6. We have high expectations for this many times Champion female as a future donor.

Lady H Stella Manso 351/0 is a daughter of Mr V8 194/7 and is a powerhouse, with a world of bone, rib shape, base width, and a wide hip. Stella 351/0 is one we can all agree on. Like many Heritage females, she combines several important Brahman breed features such as her feminine head, neck and shoulders. She has an ideal hump design and placement, and is a soft hided female that shows ample dewlap and a deeper flank. The dam of Lady H Stella Manso 351/0 is Lady EE Brandeis Manso 35, who is a daughter of Mr H Arctic Ice Manso 432 and continues to be one of the top money earners at Heritage Cattle Company, as well the dam to our herdsire Mr H Ocu Manso 936/6. We anticipate great things in the future from this elite female.

Hayley is a classic Heritage “Pretty and Power” female, being wide based, big topped, with an extra amount of rib shape, length and performance. She has developed into a great young cow. Hayley 378/0 is sired by Mr H Vega Manso 301/2 and out of Lady H Margi Manso 280/2, a full sister to the 2015 International Grand Champion Gray Bull, +Mr H Elijah Manso 281/2. Hayley 378/0’s show career has been electric, capturing several class championships and division titles. As a breeding piece, Lady H Hayley Manso 378/0 gives us the flexibility to use her with more moderate carcass leading sires or select a larger framed bull to take advantage of her maternal prowness.

I love the combination of Mr H Bogota Manso 253/0 paired with Miss Libertad Slugger 170/1. It is moments like these and a female like this that keeps me motivated as a Brahman breeder to push forward into unchartered waters and see just how good we can make this breed. Danie 387/0 is physically ideal in her features. She is a beautiful, up-headed female with a long, extended front one-third. She has picture perfect hump design and placement. Her body depicts that of a future brood cow, showing excellent rib shape, a wide muscular topline, and a broad level hip. You have heard me speak about the production of our 170/1 cow, who is the dam of Lady H Danie Manso 387/0. The 170/1 cow has produced National Champions in both Central American and the United States, which is a rare feat in the Brahman Industry for a donor. In addition, Miss Libertad Slugger 170/1 is the dam to our current herd sire and former champion, Mr H Breaker Manso 103/7.

Stacking the great ones! Lady H Pamela Manso 400/0 is the result of crossing two International Grand Champions, Register of Renown and Breed Icons, +Mr V8 960/5 and +Miss V8 464/6. Pamela 400/0 is a big boned, big footed female, that has length for days with a wide and muscular topline while standing on a strong base. Lady H Pamela Manso 400/0 charts positive for eight essential traits in both performance and carcass merits. We feel this young female as the phenotypic characteristics and genetic reach to be a great one.
