Lemont was officially incorporated as a municipality on June 9, 1873. The Village will be celebrating all throughout 2023, as well as businesses, schools, existing events, and more.

Our history sets us apart from other communities with a downtown dating back to the building of the Illinois & Michigan Canal with stories of yesteryear that would intrigue even the novice history buff.

As the Canal was being built, newly immigrated Irish, German, and Scandinavians, along with French and English laborers came looking to the area for a new life. While digging the canal, dolomite limestone was discovered that led to the development of the stone quarries. This became one of the chief building materials used in many landmark buildings, including the Chicago Water Tower, Holy Name Cathedral, and the Illinois Capitol Building in Springfield.

Now you can explore the Heritage Quarries Recreation Area, a 100-acre nature park to hike, bike, picnic, bird watch, boat and fish with a 6-mile crushed stone marked trail. Take a guided tour of the quarry area in the spring or fall with the Lemont Historical Society. Call 630-257-2972 for available dates and times.

Our quaint downtown is on the National Register of Historic Places. Take a guided tour with the Lemont Historical Society (call 630-257-2972) and walk along the streets of the infamous Smokey Row strip, which was wilder than Dodge City back in the day. Pick up a self-guided tour booklet and map at Smokey Row Antiques, 112 Stephen Street, and discover the many preserved historic sites, charming limestone buildings, murals, and public art displays.

After your tour, experience the flavors and flair in our many oneof-a-kind restaurants ready for any palate. Mingle with the locals at our mix of longtime taverns and pubs. Shop in our distinctive boutiques and quaint shops nestled with late 19th century buildings. And, if you’re up for it, head over to The Forge: Lemont Quarries for climbing and ziplining or grab a craft beer at Pollyanna Brewing Company. Enjoy all we have to offer.

2022 has been a year packed with lots of entertainment and events at Heritage Park, the Village’s crown jewel, 103-acre community park right in the middle of Homer Glen. Heritage Park was host to many special events and community gatherings

One spotlight of Heritage Park is our tennis/ pickleball courts, which have seen a drastic increase in use over the past year. I am always hearing from our residents how much they love the sport of pickleball, and as more and more participants pick up a racket for the first time, we’ll continue to explore ways to make sure our growing community of pickleballers have plenty of options available for enjoying the sport.

HOMER GLEN OVERVIEW

Incorporated on April 17, 2001, the Village of Homer Glen is strategically positioned in northeastern Will County, 25 miles southwest of downtown Chicago. The I-355 Veteran’s Memorial Tollway links I-55 south to I-80 on the western edge of the community. Homer Glen is an upscale suburban gem offering a unique blend of open space, beautiful residential developments, and vibrant commercial corridors with significant commercial growth potential. Homer Glen is one of Will County’s largest municipalities, currently encompassing approximately 22 square miles with the opportunity to ultimately grow to about 25 square miles. The Forest Preserve District of Will County has over 1,300 acres of land within the Village, providing a unique lifestyle amenity.

Homer Glen is home to a variety of local businesses and nationally recognized brands. Economic development activity is occurring in the Village’s primary commercial corridors of 143rd Street, 159th Street, and Bell Road. The State of Illinois and Will County are investing over $200 million in road improvements to widen all three primary commercial corridors to four lanes of the coming years. These roadway improvements, needed to accommodate projected traffic increases, will further enhance Homer Glen’s attractiveness for new development. IDOT’s widening and improvement project for 159th Street (IL Route 7) opened for four lanes of traffic in November 2019.

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

Attractive demographics, quality school districts, easy transportation access, existing retailers and traffic counts make Homer Glen an excellent choice for new businesses. Two access points with the Veteran’s Memorial Tollway I-355, Illinois State and Will County road improvements and prime land development opportunities will help drive interest in Homer Glen for future business expansion and growth.

The Village’s strategic initiatives for economic development create the foundation for balanced growth. The strategy envisions new quality residential and commercial development that will build on the community’s unique character and quality of life while expanding the tax bases to deliver support services and amenities. The plan allows the Village to embrace growth along the high traffic corridors while elsewhere preserving the open space, natural resources, and semi-rural character that make Homer Glen so desirable.

The Village has streamlined and implemented business-friendly Code and process improvements to support residential and commercial growth opportunities. Village staff is proactive and ready to assist new businesses considering Homer Glen as a location. HOMER GLEN KITE FEST

A new tradition in Homer Glen, come to Heritage Park to see gigantic kites flown by kite enthusiasts from Chicagoland. Bring your own kite and fly it to the highest height!

TULIP ART IN THE PARK

Stroll through Heritage Park and check out the Tulip Art in the Park. Wooden tulips are decorated by local residents, businesses, organizations, and students.

QUARRYMAN CHALLENGE

The hills of Lemont make for a difficult running race for those willing to take on the 5k or 10-mile race.

LEMONT LEGENDS CRUISE NIGHTS

The area’s best block party returns on Wednesdays throughout the summer. Cars, food, and fun!

SUMMER SOIREES

The Lemont Park District holds great concerts right in the middle of Downtown Lemont on select Thursdays during the summer. Don’t miss out on the talented artists that play on the state on Stephen Street.

HOMERFEST

A massive celebration of our nation’s independence featuring bands, carnival rides, great food and much more!

FORGE FEST

The world’s largest adventure park celebrates its birthday every year in July with a great concert, fireworks, and more!

MOVIE UNDER THE STARS

TASTE OF LEMONT

Benefitting the Lemont High School Educational Foundation, this festival gives you the chance to fill yourself with food from vendors throughout the area for a great cause. Come hungry, because your favorite Lemont staples will be there as well as new favorites!

LHG MEAT-A-THON

A Carnivorous Challenge, where participants eat over a pound and a half of meat from local restaurants.

HALLOWEEN HOEDOWN

Parents and children of all ages can come down in their Halloween costume to take

part in this parade. Make sure the kids check out the local participating businesses that may have candy for the “trick-ortreating.”

SCARECROW WALK AND CONTEST

50 scarecrows will take over Heritage Park for most of October, designed by individuals, families, organizations, and business. Will you design one? Will you vote for your favorite?

All public works functions, including maintenance of 131 miles of streets, bridge maintenance, snowplowing, storm water drainage maintenance, etc., are provided through the newly created Public Works Department.

ANNUAL BUSINESS LICENSE

All businesses operating within the corporate boundaries of Homer Glen are required to hold an active Business License with the Village. The application form is available on the Village website or contact the Village Clerk for more information at (708) 301-0632.

REFUSE COLLECTION

Village-wide refuse, recycling, and yard waste collection and disposal service for all residential properties is provided by Homewood Disposal Service, under an agreement with the Village of Homer Glen. There are an abundance of recreational and leisure opportunities for the entire family here in the Lemont and Homer Glen area. From a peaceful day in one of the area’s many parks, to trying to hit the fairway on a championship-level course, to one of the many activities at an 300-acre state-of-the-art adventure park, it’s time to get out and play!

HERITAGE QUARRIES RECREATION AREA

Just east of Lemont Downtown, Heritage Quarries Recreation Area is a 100-acre nature park where visitors can hike, bike, picnic, bird watch, boat, and fish. The quarries are freshwater lakes, offering one-of-a-kind boating and fishing experiences for the public. Cyclists, runners, and dog walkers can enjoy the Lemont I&M Canal trail that lies along the historic towpath of the Illinois & Michigan Canal, which loops around the park’s limestone quarry lakes.

THE FORGE: LEMONT QUARRIES

The Heritage Quarries Recreation Area is also home to The Forge: Lemont Quarries. The Forge is a state-ofthe-art adventure park designed to deliver unique year-round activities for adventures of all ages and abilities. Climbing, ziplining, laser tag, axe throwing, scavenger hunts, BMX &

Mountain Biking, casual riding trails, and more. The Forge’s outdoor stage is home to great musical concerts and performances, perfect for relaxing after an adventurous day.

CAMP SAGAWAU

The 12,800-square-foot Camp Sagawau Environmental Learning Center provides visitors with an opportunity to learn about the Lemont area’s natural history. The facility includes interpretive displays highlighting the natural wonders that can be found in the surrounding 17,000-acre forest preserves. Among the attractions are a 100,000-year-old dolomite limestone canyon, a graminoid fen, 900-year-old burr oaks and nearly 100 acres of dolomite prairie. The center also includes a window-lined ski lodge. Camp Sagawau is recognized as having some of the best cross-country skiing in the Midwest and visitors can ski daily during winter months. Lessons

WATERFALL GLEN FOREST PRESERVE

Waterfall Glen is a 2,472-acre nature preserve located just north of Lemont on Lemont Road. It is owned by the DuPage County Forest Preserve District and offers extensive trails, picnic areas, bird watching, and fishing. One unique feature of Waterfall Glen is the large open field in the southwest section of the preserve that is a popular spot for local model aircraft enthusiasts. CENTENNIAL TRAIL

The Centennial Trail, which runs along the Des Plaines River near Lemont, can be accesed from the north side of the Lemont Road Bridge. The trail connects users to the state I&M Canal Trail, the Isle a la Cache Museum, downtown

Lockport, the Joliet Iron Works Historic Site, and other regional attractions.

The Lemont Park District has over 20 parks tucked within Lemont’s many great neighborhoods. These parks feature fun play equipment, walking paths, picnic shelters, and sports fields.

HERITAGE PARK

Located behind Homer Glen’s Village Hall, Heritage Park offers passive and active recreational activities. The highlight of Heritage Park is the Active Core, which is seven acres of recreational activities including a natured-themed play area, a pavilion, bocce ball courts, tennis courts, pickleball courts, sand volleyball courts, outdoor fitness equipment, a challenge course, and swing sets with ADA accessibility.

HERITAGE PARK DISC GOLF COURSE

The Heritage Park Disc Golf Course is open to the public. Disc Golf is a fast-growing sport that is friendly for all ages.

The fun course takes players throughout the park with 18 holes (baskets) of challenging obstacles, distances, and angles. The course begins immediately west of the Active Core, north of the Heritage Park parking lot.

HEROES TRAIL

The Heroes Trail system is made up of several different segments that span throughout the Village of Homer Glen, connecting parks, subdivisions, and shopping districts.
