Wildlife

There are plenty of wildlife experiences waiting for you in the Arctic – like seeing a polar bear for the first time. With an abundance of animals, birds and marine life, you’ll feel closer than ever to nature.

Atlantic Puffin

These small seabirds are strong swimmers and dive to depths of 60m in search of fish. They spend return to land during breeding season (April to September) to nest in burrows on coastal cliffs.

Polar Bear

This is the largest land carnivore on the planet. Incredibly well adapted to its marine environment, the polar bear may swim underwater for up to three minutes to approach seals on shore or on ice floes.

Arctic Fox

Also known as the white fox, polar fox or snow fox this species of fox is often found scavenging along the bird cliffs in a variety of habitats. Coastal arctic foxes will also eat shellfish, sea urchins and other invertebrates.

Walrus

Adult walruses are characterized by prominent tusks and whiskers, adult males in the Pacific can weigh more than 1,200 kilograms.

Polarbearpictureshavebeentakenwithprofessional zoomincompliancewithAECOregulations.

Black Guillemot

Amidst the enchanting coastlines of Norway and the wild landscapes of Svalbard, the black guillemot graces the skies with its stunning black plumage and contrasting white wing patches. These resilient birds are well adapted to the harsh Arctic climate and favor rugged cliffs and rocky shorelines.

Ringed Seal

The smallest seal in the Arctic, they spend most of their time near the shore feeding on cod and crustaceans. These charismatic seals get their name from the light-colored circular patterns on their coat.

Svalbard Reindeer

Also known as the Caribou in North America this species of deer has a circumpolar distribution. Male reindeer develop antlers from April through July, shedding the velvet covering in late summer.

Little Auk

These little birds have a similar build to a starling, growing to about 18 cm.

Although pint-sized, they have a big appetite, eating up to 60,000 copepods a day.

Expedition Activities

Our ships offer an extensive range of expedition activities, all supported by highly-trained crew.

Zodiacs

Safe, sturdy inflatable rib boats – allow you toexplore special, hard-to-reach locations. Prepare to feel immersed in the natural world as you set off for adventure on one of our fleet of Zodiacs.

Kayaking

Explore the world’s most remote destinations, with dedicated guides. Glide through breathtaking landscapes, experience wildlife up close, and get VIP access to nature’s most untouched places.

Hiking

A hiking excursion is the perfect opportunity to step off the ship and explore. You’ll be accompanied by experienced guides who’ll share their knowledge of the landscape and wildlife you encounter.

Cruise from Iceland to Svalbard

Begin your Arctic adventure in cosmopolitan Reykjavík before exploring the ‘land of ice and fire’s’ geological wonders. Sail to the rarelyvisited volcanic island of Jan Mayen, where birdwatchers will be in their element – you may also spot whales and polar bears. As you cross the Norwegian Sea, you’ll pass towering glaciers as they calve spectacular icebergs into the ocean, before concluding this extraordinary voyage in Longyearbyen, the world’s most northerly town.

The legends of the Arctic

Synonymous with unchartered discovery, the vast and wild Arctic has fascinated adventurers, scientists and explorers for decades.

Natural wonders range from the impossibly large icebergs of Ilulissat Ice Fjord in Greenland and the vast ice sheets and bubbling lava flows of Iceland to The Canadian Arctic, home to the elusive narwhal and to museums and memorials telling the stories of the explorers who failed and succeeded in crossing the infamous Northwest Passage.

Across the Arctic, you’ll find seals, walruses, reindeer, Arctic foxes, numerous whale species, a host of birdlife and, of course, the mighty polar bear.
