Preparing for Your New Apartment

When you’re on the hunt for an apartment, it’s best to start by touring complexes. Many apartments have started doing virtual tours for those who can’t be there in person. If you are able to tour in person, be sure to check with the apartment’s landlord or leasing office to set up an appointment for a tour. Have a list of questions in mind related to the lease terms, apartment amenities, policies, and maintenance. Before moving in, it’s important to find out what the apartment complex requires for a potential renter to begin the leasing process. The apartment complex will have prospective renters fill out an application and may require proof of employment or income. This could mean providing the last few paystubs or a current W-2, but each complex may have their own separate preference. Many apartment complexes require renters to meet certain income requirements.

Most apartments require tenants to have a renter’s insurance policy, which can cover you in the event of a hurricane, fire or flood. If you intend to bring a furry companion to live with you, make sure the apartment you choose is pet-friendly. Apartments typically have restrictions for certain breeds. Renting also requires a few upfront costs such as application and deposit fees. Some apartments may offer discounts or specials for active-duty military, students or employees working for major area companies, so be sure to ask if you qualify for any.
