St. Peter AFTER Christ’s Ascension

LIFE OF

A

fter the Son of God was crucified and His Ascension to Heaven, what became of St. Peter? As Prince of the Apostles

He rebuked a magician by the name of Simon Magus in Samaria who offered him money “if he (Peter) would teach the secret of his occult powers” by sternly saying, “Keep thy money to thyself, to perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased by money.”

Peter took the initiative to select a new Apos -tle in place of Judas, and performed his first miracle of healing. It was a lame beggar who asked Peter for money, however the beggar was not given for Peter had none. Instead, he bade the beggar, in the name of Jesus the Nazarene to rise and walk; the beggar did what was asked, and he was healed of his lameness. Two years after the Ascensions, persecutions that culminated with the martyrdom of St. Stephen caused by the spread of the new religion, most of the converts dispersed or hid. But it didn’t frighten the Apostles for they were firm, even in Jerusalem where the Jewish temple was the frontline of opposition.

Farther and farther afield, Peter preached in outlying villages. He rebuked a magician by the name of Simon Magus in Samaria who offered him money “if he (Peter) would teach the secret of his occult powers” by sternly saying, “Keep thy money to thyself, to perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased by money." It was inevitable that Peter would soon be locking horns with the Jewish authorities for his outspokenness, and was imprisoned twice by the high priests. It was told that he was miraculously released from the prison chains and would astonish other Apostles by appearing suddenly behind them. The First Bishop of Rome Peter proceeded to Joppa and Lydda and preached on its seaports. There, Peter met men of different races. According to historical sources, he baptized the first Gentile in Caesarea – a man named Cornelius. He realized that Christianity must win the greatest support from the

Gentiles, thus Peter helped in shaping the sect’s policies towards the Gentiles. The eminence of Christianity grew day by day which catapulted Peter to the seat of bishop of the see of Antioch. But no one knew how long Peter spent there, or how or when Peter came to Rome. Historical evidences state that Peter spent his last years in Rome as bishop.

Martyrdom and Beyond

According to the writings of three early Fathers St. Ire naeus, Clement of Alexandria and Tertullian, Peter suffered his martyrdom in Rome during the reign of the mad emperor Nero, in the same year as St. Paul’s. St. Peter’s writings were scarce for only his New Testament Epistles I and II have come down to us. These Epistles are believed to be written from Rome to Christian converts in Asia Minor. The first Epistle contains “admonitions to mutual helpfulness, charity, and humility, and “But grow in grace and knowl in general outlines the duties of edge of our Lord and Saviour, Je Christians in all aspects of life.” sus Christ. To him be the glory, both It is concluded with Peter sendnow and the day of eternity.” ing greetings from "the church which is at Babylon." This fur-Epistle II of St. John the Apostle thers the evidence that this Epis tle is in fact written in Rome, for at that time in the Jewish usage Rome

was called Babylon. Epistle II “warns against false teachings, speaks of the Second Coming of the Lord.” It is ended with a doxology: “But grow in grace and knowledge of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. To him be the glory, both now and the day of eternity." Recent findings show that the St. Peter’s Church in Rome indeed rose over the site of his tomb. This was announced by the late Pope Pius XII at the close of 1950. Many wall writings are found which link St. Peter and St. Paul, showing popular devotion to the two great Apostles started in very early times, in the catacombs. Paintings after 1950 show St. Peter as a short, active, curly-haired and curly-bearded man. In art, a boat, keys, and a cock is his traditional emblems.

END NOTES: (1)For St. Irenaeus, see below; Clement of Alexandria was a Christian writer who died about the year 215; Tertullian was a Roman convert who lived and wrote in Carthage, dying about 230. My fiesta greetings of peace, love and hope to my BELOVED CONSTITUENTS IN BARANGAY CARNAZA, DAANBANTAYAN, CEBU!

I would like to extend my fervent greetings of merriment to everyone in the celebration of your fiesta in Honor of your Patron Saint, St. Peter the Apostle. St. Peter was the chosen apostle of God to lead His flocks in the path to holiness. He was a dear friend of Christ Jesus whom the keys of heaven were entrusted. My beloved brothers and sisters, may like Saint Peter, we may all become bearers of light to others for the coming glory of our Father in Heaven. May we become the keys in opening the doors to others as we reach out to the least of them. Let us struck down the walls that divide us and together spread our wings up high as we strive to live this meaningful life to the fullest. It is my humble prayer that through this kind of event, we will reflect and bow down to our Creator, Lord Jesus Christ for giving us ample opportunities to live life and experience the intimate love and care of our Father in Heaven because of the bountiful blessings we received each day. Our Patron Saint is always there for us, being our constant intercessor for our various intentions. Brothers and sisters, I invite you all to converge on our common goal and interests for the general welfare. Let us make every single opportunity a chance to redirect our desires and aspirations to the benefit of the many. Like our fervent devotion which is a manifestation of our total submission to the care and protection of our Lord Jesus Christ through our Patron, may we also become true servants and shepherds of our respective families and communities, that by giving ourselves unconditionally we do not advance in any single instance our personal interests. My dear friends, may this fiesta celebration ignite our hearts to fully reflect the will of our Father in Heaven by emulating the virtues of our Patron. This annual observance of our faith and culture may somehow fortify our faith to God and religiously avow His commandments. I, once again exhort everyone to hold hand-in-hand together in this journey of faith with hope and love in our hearts. Reflecting our theme for this year’s celebration which is “STRENGTH THROUGH FAITH, UNITY AND COOPERATION”, let us then re-unite our vision and efforts for the common good and share our blessings with one another as we all together face the adversities of life. May each one of us always hold the torch of hope and love for others and etching in our hearts the virtues of forgiveness and unconditional love for our brethren. Together, let us achieve a brighter tomorrow with peace in our hearts. VIVA ST. PETER THE APOSTLE! 25th day of April 2013, Capitol, Cebu City, Cebu.

THE

COCO CRAB Digested from Wikipedia

W

ith its humongous pincers and claws, it looks fearsome as if it could tear your fingers one by one (which it can). In fact it can peel the hard covering of the coconut like it was just another banana. Behold, the only member of the genus Birgus, the coconut crab. The coconut crab, also known as the palm thief and robber crab in other parts of the world, is known as tatus to Carnaza-anons. It can grow up to 16 inches in body length and can weigh up to 4.1 kilograms This creature loves tropical weather which explains its existence on the soil of Barangay Carnaza. It is also found in islands in the Indian Ocean to Pacific Ocean as far as Gambier Islands, including our very own Carnaza Island. To Carnaza-anons, the tatus generally has a brownish color however not all are brown. The tatus’ color can range from reddish orange to bluish violet. For example in Seychelles, their average coconut crab is red. Life Cycle The period between May to September is known to be the mating season of the coco crab. The mating of the tatus is frequent and is more pronounced in the months of early June to August. The fertilization process is thought to occur externally, on the abdomen of the female coco crab. The males deposit its spermatophores on the abdomen of the females, then the eggs are released through the abdomen and passes through

COCO CRAB aka TATUS Kingdom: Animalia Phylum: Arthropoda Subphylum: Crustacea Class: Malacostraca Order: Decapoda Superfamily: Paguroidea Family: Coenobitidae Genus: Birgus (Leach, 1816) Species: B. latro

the spermatophore mass. The fertilized eggs are carried by the females for a few months and the larvae are released to the sea which usually happens at dusk, at rocky shores coinciding with the high tide. During their period at the sea, many of the coco crab larvae are eaten by its natural predators. From 25 to 33 days, the larvae settles to the bottom of the ocean and finds a gastropod shell of the right size then migrate with other terrestrial hermit crabs to the shore. During that period, the young tatus loses its ability to breathe underwater. When they outgrow their shell, their hard abdomen develops and after five years, the tatus can already mate. Full growth is reached after only 40-60 years. Unique Characteristics and Diet Unlike other crabs, the tatus has a different type of lung (scientifically called the branchiostegal lung) which can’t be able to breathe underwater. In short, coco crabs can’t swim and if they are immersed too long in water they could drown. Although it is known that the tatus can climb the slender tree of life (the coconut), and eventually open its fruit, coconuts aren’t really that important in its diet. Making up for its inability to swim, the tatus has exceptional olfactory senses. It has a sensitive sense of smell which it uses to find potential food sources. Aside from coconuts, the tatus also feeds on fruits, nuts, seeds and pith (the soft tissue of a stem or trunk) of fallen trees. However, they are also known to eat organic matter such as carrion or dead animals opportunistically. Coconut crabs is generally known not to be a poisonous creature however if its diet includes poisonous food, coco crabs can be fatal if eaten.

The Regal yet Extirpated (in some areas) In some parts of the world where the tatus resides, legal protection has been given to the ginormous crustacean. For example in Guam and the Federated States of Micronesia, a ban on capturing egg-bearing female tatus has been imposed. In Northern Mariana Islands, capture of non -egg-bearing adults is open only during September to November. Before you could hunt a non-eggbearing tatus, one must secure a license from the Northern Mariana Islands authorities and can only hunt up to five coco crabs and 15 coco crabs throughout September to November. Tuvaluans provide islets for the coco crabs to live in its Funafuti Conservation Area, a wide area covering 33 square kilometers of reef, lagoon and islets. The advancing of the human civilization and the ballooning of the human population posed as exterminating factors to the coco crab population. In Madagascar and mainland Australia, coconut crabs are no longer found. This is because the tatus is often captured when it is in contact with humans, which is known as a delicacy and an aphrodisiac. Seeing the importance of the survival of the species, the International Union for the Conservation of Nature started documenting the population of the coconut crab and originally listed it as a vulnerable species in 1981. However as of this “Coconut crabs is generwriting, the tatus is relisted as data deficient by IUCN ally known not to be a poidue to lack of information. sonous creature however if its diet includes poisonous food, coco crabs can be fatal if eaten.”

T

hrough irrational optimism from Winston Churchill’s words; “We have nothing to offer but blood, sweat, toil, and tears.” This year’s fiesta celebration marks the beginning of the end to our anxiety, uncertainty and worries about ourselves. We made the first simple step that equates to a quantum leap forward in the history of our storied barangay fiesta. Today, we write history, a very colorful chapter of our life that will serve as a cornerstone, an inspiration to the future generations, who will share our belief and aspirations. Late last year the Executive Committee together with The Advisers, after negotiating with the lot donors, decided to

commence at once the clearing of the site for the proposed church. Things unfold that most observers believe will never happen. As the ordinary folks began carving the hillside (by their own bare hands, without any pay and/ or compensation) of the present site of the proposed St. Peter the Apostle Church, they were dismissed and proclaimed to fail. But, with stubborn faith, inch by inch they painstakingly and obliviously cleared and leveled the site. The work progressed so slowly at first. It was too difficult and treacherous working on uneven terrain with too little elbow room. As the days passed, the clearing became noticeable and obvious. Donation and contribution for the provisions of those who volunteered to work started to trickle. Soon, pledges of

help came not only in the barrio proper but the entire island of Carnaza, then from beyond our shores. Even people from the other religions in the barangay, lend a hand and spent days working at the site for free. Thank Heavens to all those with benevolent heart that encouragingly made life bearable at the worksite!

fortably scale up and down the left wing of the staircase leading to the church site.

It is heartening to note that people from different walks of life in the barangay got involved in this ambitious project, because of the inspiration of that stubborn faith, the will of those who callous their hands, sweated and burned their skin under the sun.

Accordingly, in the movie The Lorax, The Once-Ler said, “It doesn’t matter how small a thing started, but rather how big that thing will become!”

This fiesta, we witness the celebration of the first mass at the site of our proposed church, although still under the shade of a tent. But, we can now com-

Yes, it is still a gigantic task for all of us ahead, but I will courageously say, “With the blessings from the Omniscient God, things can be done if we just believe in ourselves.”

Viva San Pedro! Happy Fiesta Everyone!
