They learned they were playing host to eight international guests; five of them from Japan, two from Russia... and the other from Chesterfield. It then transpired that their Chesterfield Guiding colleague, Suzie Gilley, had actually flown in from Chesterfield County in Virginia, USA.

WHAT’S in a name? There’s a new clothing business opened in Dronfield called Curious Chloe... and we were curious to know just who Chloe was, so we asked.

Chloe isn’t the owner, neither does she know anything at all about fashion or clothing. She does, however, look rather good in fur, for Chloe is the owner’s pet chinchilla.

IT was an honour to represent Dronfield at a recent gathering of civic leaders and mayors at the Brailsford home of the High Sheriff of Derbyshire, Fiona Cannon. I spoke to representatives from around the county and several of them had questions to ask about Dronfield, how I became Town Mayor and my Chain of Office. Closer to home, I was delighted to visit Northfield School and learn about the children’s efforts at growing their own produce. Just down the road, it was a thrill to open exciting new children’s play equipment in the playground alongside Stonelow School. I remember using this playground when I was a child! Across the valley at Dronfield Woodhouse there was an impressive turnout for the blessing of the well dressings, this year celebrating the work of the Guides and Edale Mountain Rescue. I met many more local young people at Chatsworth where I was invited to join local campers at Peak 2010. This spectacular event provided an opportunity for members of Scouting and Guiding in Derbyshire, together with their invited friends from Scouting and Guiding in other parts of the UK and overseas, to experience an international camp. The camp theme was ‘One World – Our World’ and I was delighted to see the young people from Dronfield and their leaders enjoying the event and making new friends from far and wide. Thank you to everyone who is playing a part in helping my Mayor’s Appeal. The Civic Service raised £500 and coffee mornings in the Civic Hall have been well supported. Thanks to my mum Denise, mother-in-law Susan and friend Joyce Emmens for their help. The next coffee morning is on Thursday, August 19th, so please come along! BUILDING A FIRST CLASS REPUTATION ITH more than 25 years experience in the roofing and building trade,
W Dronfield’s Shaun Elliott is proud of the reputation he has achieved.
His own business, launched eight years ago, has tackled hundreds of roofing jobs and construction tasks, mainly in the Dronfield and Sheffield areas. Ready to take on virtually any roofing or building task, no matter how large or small, Shaun and his colleague Andy Dixon are determined to retain their high standards of workmanship at a time when other roofing and building firms are cutting back on quality in order to reduce their prices. Said Shaun: “The cheapest quote isn’t always the best quote. Like with Shaun Elliott (right) with colleague Andy Dixon most things, you get what you pay for and we will not compromise on quality by using inferior products. The estimates we provide are based on high quality, industry-approved materials. “We are proud of our high standards and reliability and people also like the peace of mind they get by choosing a local roofing or building firm, as opposed to one from out of town.” Although their S. Elliott Contractors blue van has become a familiar sight locally, Shaun and Andy - both former Henry Fanshawe School pupils - have also been called upon to do work as far away as London. Free estimates are given for all roofing jobs including re-roofing projects, repairs, upvc soffits and fascias, tiles, flat roofing and cladding, plus new buildings, extensions and conversions. If you are looking for a reliable roofing or building company in the local area, then look no further than S. Elliott Contractors. Added Shaun: “We work as a team. We are not plumbers or electricians but we do work hand-in-hand with other experienced local tradesmen who we trust in order to be able to offer the complete service.”

Clocks, coins, model railways and stuffed You would never believe the treasures Dronfield area folk have tucked away in their lofts and cabinets. A recent there really can be cash in your attic. Dronfield Eye’s Kat Withers looks at some of the more unusual items on FASCINATING antiques from Dronfield and the surrounding areas have been valued by experts from ELR Auctions, with many owners deciding to enter their precious items into auctions later this year. By the time the Peel Centre opened its doors, there was already a line of people waiting to discover if they had hidden treasures in their home. Organised by ELR Auctions, a Sheffield based company established in 1840, the valuers focused mainly on sporting memorabilia, the military, toys, books, coins and collectables, with no items being turned away. Commercial director, Liz Dashper, who lives in Dronfield and organised the auction, explained: “We have many existing clients from the Dronfield, Coal Aston and Dronfield Woodhouse areas and we wanted to be able to reach more of the people who may find it difficult to get into Sheffield to see us. We thought it would be a great idea to bring our specialist team to them!” Some of the items valued will be included in fortnightly antiques and collectable auctions, others in specialist sales and some in the next quarterly antique and fine art auction on Friday, October 15th. Specialist coin valuer Mark Thompson was shown a collection of late 19th and early 20th

century sovereigns and half-sovereigns from a lady in Dronfield that he estimated should make around £1,200 to £1,500 at a specialist coin auction. Mark also expected a Hornby Dublo Duchess of Montrose train set, in its original box with a selection of early 20th century Triang tinplate vehicles, to bring in £120 to £180 at the specialist toy auction in September. Saleroom manager and auctioneer Robert Lea valued a late 19th century musical box decorated with butterflies at £300 to £500 for two ladies from Dronfield Woodhouse, who then decided to enter it into an October auction. Another pair of sisters from Dronfield Woodhouse, Chris Hayes and Susan Bownes, brought along a mid-19th century walnut mantle clock that they found while sorting through their parents’ house. It is of very good quality and estimated to sell for £200 to £300 in ELR’s October antique and fine art auction. Furniture and collectables valuer Andrew Jameson also inspected an early 19th century burr elm sarcophagus shaped tea caddy, which he valued at £50 to £80. However, one of the most unusual items on the day was a pair of early 20th century stuffed tortoises!

Dronfield’s treasure chest of coins unlocked THE mystery of a locked chest and lost key has been finally been solved after a Dronfield Woodhouse family hired a locksmith to open their cabinet. The small mahogany coin cabinet, which had remained locked for some time, was found to contain 24 shelves of coins ranging from Roman to Victorian, many in near mint condition and displaying key dates. Owner of the cabinet, Keith Bedingfield, of Chatsworth Place, Dronfield Woodhouse, decided to auction it at ELR and since then a team of specialists have been cataloguing the coins for a specialist coin auction on Friday, August 20th, at the Sheffield Saleroom. Auctioneers expect a lot of interest in the collection, which includes an 1819 half-crown and a Uruguayan 1840 20 centesimos. Marketing for the sale has already begun throughout the coin collecting community. ELR commercial director Liz Dashper said: “This is a unique collection which we are delighted to be able to research, catalogue and offer onto the coin market. A great deal of time must have gone into compiling this collection and we very much look forward to the sale.”

Council has the power POSSIBLE power efficiency and renewable energy is being investigated by Dronfield Town Council in an attempt to reduce the carbon footprint at three of its premises. The sites of the suggested improvements are Dronfield Civic Centre, Gosforth Lodge In Cliffe Park and Coal Aston Sports Pavilion. Following a meeting of the council’s Recycling and Energy Work Group, Coun Richard Bull reported various measures for improving energy efficiency, such as new boilers, replacing the current striplighting and fitting solar panels to the roof. Coun Simon Temple remarked that it would be a good idea to take a lead and set an example to the local community in terms of renewable energy. Although grants are available, some of the actions are expensive and would not see a monetary payback for over ten years. So it was decided that an expert would be consulted before making a decision on any expensive work.
Reunion for Players NORTON Players are to stage a 30th anniversary celebration party and are looking for previous members who might want to attend. The event will take place from 7.30pm on Saturday, September 25th, at Coal Aston Village Hall and there will be a disco and food. Anyone wishing to attend should contact Pauline on 0114 2746124 so organisers know how many to cater for.
Herculean challenge THE newly formed Steel City Herculeans have been set the appropriately Herculean task of raising £3,000 for charity in less than 12 months. The five-strong group all answered a request for volunteers from the charity Cancer Research earlier this year. One of those who responded was 22-year-old Frances Horsfield, of Dronfield Woodhouse, who works as deputy team leader with Irwin Mitchell. The first event is Family Fun Day at Weston Park on Sunday, August 22nd. Entry is free and the day includes craft stalls, face painting and a bouncy castle as well as a treasure hunt.

Peter Wright who has retired after 21 years as headteacher at William Levick School, Dronfield Woodhouse
Peter’s heading into retirement Bidding a fond farewell to life in Dronfield after 21 years as headteacher at William Levick School is Peter Wright who retired this summer. Kat Withers talks to him about his career AFTER more than 21 years as headteacher at William Levick Primary School, Peter Wright has retired and although he’ll miss the children and fellow staff members, he is looking forward to pursuing some of his hobbies. The headship at Dronfield Woodhouse was Peter’s second, having been head of Woodthorpe C of E Primary School, Staveley, near Chesterfield. Peter, who has been teaching for 37 years, said: “Everywhere I have been I have enjoyed it and I have never regretted a moment of it. I shall miss school a lot and I have been privileged to work with such outstanding staff. I’ll miss the children and I’ll desperately miss my colleagues.” And Peter, who can’t praise his team at William Levick enough, added: “I always tried to do a good job by the staff as well as the children and had such a good team supporting me. It was a lovely team to work with. We’re all different but we worked together.” Starting his career in 1973 at Hasland Junior School, Chesterfield, teaching different age groups, Peter, of Temple Normanton, then moved to Clowne Junior School. Despite having been a head teacher from the age of 34, Peter continued to teach; giving assemblies most days and covering classes. Talking about the children, he added: “I have been very involved with the children on a day-to-day basis. Every day’s been different and I was never bored. Dronfield’s a lovely place to be and the families are lovely people.” Now Peter has some free time he is looking forward to walking with his wife Janet and also gardening. He is also very interested in local history and is planning a trip to visit his son, Ben, 28 in Bermuda. Following in her father’s footsteps, daughter Anna, 26, works in Hinkley as a secondary school PE teacher. On the highlight of his career, Peter said: “My proudest achievement is the ethos of this school. The number of people that come in for the first time and say it is a warm, friendly place. Our children are well looked after and happy and because they are happy they do well. It’s a place that people speak warmly of and that’s enough for me.”

Since vintage fashion hit the catwalk recently, local fans of fashion have had to travel to Sheffield city centre to get their vintage fix. Not so anymore. Becky Shields has followed in the footsteps of celebrities like Lily Allen and opened her own vintage clothes shop right in the heart of Dronfield. Named after Cleo, her pet chinchilla, Curious Cleo stocks clothes from the 1980s right back through the decades for both men and women. There are even 1920s gowns currently on order. Becky, who has taken specialised requests from customers and hunted down specific, rare items of clothing from as far away as America, said: “I’m environment conscious and liked the idea of using what’s already there and being fashionable.” The items in the shop - everything from clothes to accessories and shoes - are all sourced by Becky, who has always been interested in fashion and wears vintage clothes herself. She explained: “I go round everywhere and anywhere and anything I find that I like, I buy.” Born and bred in Dronfield, Becky is able to advise customers on the different styles of clothing and what items are specific to each era and added: ”You don’t have to be scared to try things on because they look different on to when they are on the hangers.” Curious Cleo, 97 Chesterfield Road, Dronfield, is open 10.30am-5pm Mon-Sat and 2pm-4pm on Sun or you can view and buy items online at www.curiouscleo.co.uk

Gluten-free eating Dear Dronfield Eye,
REGARDING the letter in a recent edition referring to coeliac friendly venues, I would like to make the following comments. Sharon must explain to people that she is coeliac. This is an illness requiring a strict diet. It is not a matter of choice like being vegetarian or vegan. Fortunately most major food retailers fully understand the condition and all supermarkets, including Marks and Spencer, have good choices for coeliacs. It’s been nearly 20 years since my wife was diagnosed coeliac and during this time we have holidayed in Europe and the UK, eating out on a regular basis. However, it’s still necessary to speak to a waiter and quite often the chef will come and talk to you. My suggestions for eating out locally are The Coach and Horses at Dronfield, The Old Pump at Barlow, The Bistro at Wentworth and The Ashford Arms at Ashford-in-the-Water. All these places have been excellent when we have been. The Green Steps Chip Shop at Hickmott Road, Sheffield, does gluten free fish and chips, plus a variety of pies. Wok Wonder, Greendale Shopping Centre, Green Lane, Dronfield, also understands the problem. If you visit Whitby, the Magpie Cafe is a must. I hope this is of help to Sharon. Pat Jackson

dronfield EYE The Dowager Duchess takes a close look at the Millthorpe masterpiece
Well dressing’s seal of approval There was a special visitor to Millthorpe well dressing this summer, the Dowager Duchess of Devonshire whose 90th birthday the floral image celebrated. Kat Withers reports THE Dowager Duchess of Devonshire came to see the Millthorpe well dressing that was decorated in honour of her 90th birthday. The well dressing, which depicted the Duchess’ former home, Chatsworth House, as well as some of Derbyshire’s main tourist attractions, was designed by Glinis Denial, who has been involved in the well dressing all her life, learning the art by helping her parents as a child. Although Glinis does the bulk of the design and decides what materials are going to be used to decorate the dressing, it is a group effort and volunteers decide on the theme together. Arranging the invitation to the Duchess was Janet Welton, who has been helping with the Millthorpe well dressing for 15 years. She explained: “We wanted to do something to recognise the Duchess’ 90th birthday and incorporate tourism in the Peak District. We do something for her every year and this year was of some significance. It’s important, but gets An image of Millthorpe well dressing is presented to the Dowager Duchess forgotten if you’re not careful.” of Devonshire by some of the talented people who created it The theme of tourism links to the Duchess as she has recently received a Lifetime Achievement said: “Thank you all so much, it’s been fascinating to come and see. dronfield EYE Holmesfield children celebrate life of Florence Nightingale THE tradition of well dressing is being continued and passed from one generation to the next by Holmesfield Village Society and pupils from Penny Acres Primary School.
The finished children’s well at Holmesfield
Students from the school designed this year’s Holmesfield Children’s Well Dressing, which depicted Florence Nightingale; 2010 being the centenary of her Penny Acres School pupils Osian Wilson, death. Bethany Micklethwaite and Ryan Sheldon Organiser Rita Butler, who arranged the children’s well dressing for 13 years, said: “Well dressings are always at the site of water. In this case an old village pond. We fill the central part of the frame with about four inches of clay and then decorate it with natural materials.” This year the display included a wide selection of flowers, including camomile and hydrangeas, leaves, weeds and even horse hair for rats’ fur. All the materials are carefully pressed into the clay one by one using a stick. The horse hair came from animals belonging to Mich Oglesby, one of the founder members of the Holmesfield Village Society. Around 20 junior school pupils from Penny Acres took it in turns to lend a hand throughout the week so that the well dressing was ready for the blessing by the Vicar, Rev William Eardley, on the Friday; after which members of the public could admire the decoration. Other youth groups from the local community also got involved, with 3rd Holmesfield Scouts helping to puddle the clay the week before the decorating began. Cath Woollen, who has helped organise the well dressing for seven years, explained: “Puddling is mixing the clay with water to get the right consistency. Then we throw it at the frame and decorate it. It’s nice to see everybody involved.”

Would you be interested in a system that not only saves you money off your energy bills, but earns you money year after year, whilst minimising you carbon footprint? In April 2010, the Feed in Tariff was introduced by the government to reward property owners who generate their own power via renewable energy sources, such as a Solar Photovoltaic (PV) system installed by Homeco Energy. The Feed in Tariff (FIT) scheme is a programme available for the next 25 years to all home and business owners in Britain. For the first two years all new customers installing up to 4kWh’s will be guaranteed a starting rate of 41.3pence for every kilowatt your system generates. A typical 2 Kilowatt system will generate on average around 1600 kilowatt hours of electricity per year. That equates to a FIT payment of £660 in the first year. On top of this you can also save the equivalent electricity off you electricity bill. So if you pay 10 pence per Kilowatt that is a further £160 per year saved on top of the FIT payment. Of course, every time there is an energy price rise, your saving will increase too! And it gets better; any excess electricity you do not use will be sent back into the grid and will entitle you to a further 3 pence per kilowatt on top of your initial FIT payment!
Not only will a solar PV system help you to reduce your carbon footprint, it also proves attractive to people looking to invest their money. With interest rates so low, a Homeco Solar PV system will typically produce a rate of return from 8% to 12% per year. Not only is the first £900 tax free, but these systems will typically have paid for themselves within 7 to 10 years. The government has committed Britain to cutting its carbon emissions by 2020, and as a result, has guaranteed this scheme for the next 25 years. Not only can you help to meet these challenges, but make money doing so!
As the regions Solar Specialists, Homeco Energy can advise on all aspects of the system, from the initial consultation and design process through to the final installation and commissioning. For more information feel free to browse our website, or contact us directly to discuss how a Solar PV may be of benefit to you and your pocket.

Got a roof? Then power your way to making money HOW would you like to see the dial on your electricity meter going backwards? Sound too good to be true? It is possible with HomeCo Energy. In just two days their experienced, friendly team could fit a Solar Photovoltaic system onto your roof that will convert the sun’s rays into electricity. Not only will you be saving money on your electricity bills, but the Feed In Tariff introduced earlier this year means that the Government will pay you 41.3p for every electrical unit that you produce. You’ll also receive an extra 3p for each unit that goes back into the National Grid, meaning an average return of 8-12% a year. The Bradway-based, family-run company has been in business for two years and in that time has seen demand for these environmentallyfriendly systems dramatically increase. Owner Chris Neil, of Unstone, has enjoyed the benefits himself after having his own system installed. He said: “lt’s massively popular in this area. Since February this year it’s really taken off. You’re instantly saving money because you’re earning four times what you were paying. Now the systems are paying for themselves in under ten years.” While some people question the effectiveness of solar panels with our weather, our climate is in fact perfect for the systems as after reaching a certain temperature their efficiency decreases. As Chris explains, our climate is very similar to that of Germany, which has had these systems in place for more than 20 years. The team only uses top-of-the-range, high quality products from reputable suppliers and offer warranties on all their systems. A full service is provided from a free, no obligation site survey, which gives the customer the opportunity to ask questions they may have and allows the team to measure the roof so they can put a system together that will work specifically with your property. For more information and your free survey contact Homeco on 0114 2935019 or go to www.homecoenergy.co.uk.

Coming up roses
When villagers threw open their garden gates, more than 258 visitors streamed in to inspect their blooms. Kat Withers talks to two of the couples whose pride and joy featured in the annual Coal Aston Open Gardens event ELEVEN picturesque gardens were opened to the general public for this year’s Coal Aston Open Gardens, raising £1,437. Organised by Coal Aston Methodist Church, the rain held off while dozens of green-fingered enthusiasts admired the best gardens the village has to offer, with proceeds going to the church and Sheffield Cathedral Archer Project for the Homeless. Previous ‘Dronfield in Bloom’ winners, Margaret and Wilfred Grimes, of Eckington Road, threw open their gates and even arranged a cake stall, which raised around £50 and was manned by their three grandchildren. This is the second year the couple, who raised around £100 this year, have taken part in the open gardens event. Wilfred, who built a hideaway cabin at the bottom of the garden, said: “The garden was packed. There was a couple from Rugby and people from the other side of Doncaster.” Philip and Anne Dawson Describing her gardening as her second passion, after her grandchildren, Margaret explained: “I suppose I dedicate quite a lot of time to it. I work Monday to Friday so all weekend I’m in the garden and weekday evenings. We have been here 17 years and over the years the garden has changed quite a lot.” She added: “The event brings the village together, that’s what’s nice about it.” Stonelow Road couple Anne and Philip Dawson also welcomed queues of people into their garden, which backs onto Firth Wood. The couple, who have lived in the house for 25 years, both help in the garden and have gardened all their lives. Philip said: “This year is the second time we have taken part. We had ever such a lot of people and they were queuing to get down the steps and back up. We got a lot of compliments. We have been married 55 years and have been gardening all that time.”

Rotarians staged such an event two years ago, attracting in excess of 1,000 visitors, and their second Dronfield Festival of Leisure
THE first Dronfield Festival of Leisure two years ago, pictured above, helped to raise the profiles of many local leisure and voluntary groups and celebrate the diverse range of activities available in and around the town. More than 1,000 visitors attended the event promises to be every bit as popular, with more exhibitors this time around. The event is to be staged at Dronfield Henry Fanshawe School on Saturday, September 18th, from 10am until 4pm and dozens of organisations will be participating. In addition to information stalls and static displays, the 2010 event will also feature live performances and demonstrations. The advice is to arrive early at the
school’s main Green Lane entrance to give yourself plenty of time to see everything, from tennis to town twinning, walking to weaving and floral art to Fairtrade. Dronfield Festival of Leisure 2010 will provide the perfect opportunity to learn about local activities and talk to the people involved. The event is to be opened by the Mayor of Dronfield, Coun Philip Blackburn, and refreshments will be served.
Trophy time for town Rotarians THE initial Dronfield Festival of Leisure almost two years ago was such a success that organisers from The Rotary Club of Dronfield have received a prestigious award to mark the event. The local group has been presented with one of Rotary’s top community awards in recognition of the success of the Festival of Leisure and also to celebrate their work in providing benches in Sindelfingen Park. Local Rotarians Ian Collins, David Oldale and President Eric Beach are pictured with their trophy and certificate.

EYE on weddings
Everything will go smoothly on the day If you’re planning a marriage and fear that something, somewhere may go wrong, spare a thought for bride Princess Maria del Pozza della Cisterno who had enough bad luck for two. Kat Withers reports
WEDDINGS.... little girls spend hours planning them, parents relish the opportunity to interfere in their children’s lives one last time and men fear their fiancées turning into bridezillas at the mere mention of the word. Whatever your opinion, it’s unlikely you’ll be able to avoid them, especially at this time of year. Instead, bear these interesting, and downright bizarre, facts in mind for next time the subject arises. Most people would agree weddings are never simple. Not so in Texas where an old law means that you only have to publicly introduce your partner as your wife or husband three times and you’re legally married. Also in the US, in Wisconsin the boundaries of marriage have been extended to cover the sacred bond between man and house. Both men and women living there can legally marry their own home. While the idea of marrying your home may seem odd, spare a thought for people with objectum sexuality, a condition that makes you attracted to inanimate objects. One sufferer has married a fairground ride,
32
dronfield E Y E
What are you planning for your big day? while another has married the Eiffel Tower. If bad things come in threes, on her wedding day Princess Maria del Pozza della Cisterno had enough bad luck for two. The day in 1867 she married the King of Italy’s son, the best
man shot himself, the palace gatekeeper cut his own throat and her wardrobe mistress hung herself. As if the suicides weren’t enough, the King’s aide fell from his horse and was killed instantly, the stationmaster was crushed to death under the honeymoon train and the colonel leading the wedding procession died when he collapsed from sunstroke. If you’re struggling to choose a best man you could always revert to the old Scottish tradition where all contenders attempt to kidnap the bride-to-be and the most successful is rewarded with the role of best man. Of course you could always not have a best man and avoid the customary, embarrassing speech; side stepping infamous one-liners such as ‘I can honestly say that in all the years I’ve known him, no-one has even questioned the groom’s intelligence. In fact, I’ve never heard anyone mention it.’ Wherever you stand on weddings, love them, hate them or indifference, with more than 300,000 married in the UK every year and an average of £15,000 spent on each wedding, don’t expect to stop hearing about them anytime soon.

EYE postbag
My fond recollections of ex-teacher Memories of a former teacher are recounted here by reader Robert Chappell, together with other letters from the Dronfield Eye postbag. Email us at info@dronfieldeye.co.uk Dear Dronfield Eye,
I WAS sorry to read in your July issue about the passing of Mr Outram, who was my second year form teacher at Dronfield Junior School in - I think -1954. I remember Mr Outram as a kind and helpful teacher, rather more "laid back" than his collegues, and one who was able to do his job without resorting to the rather strict discipline used by others, who admittedly were all working with large class sizes and somewhat basic teaching equipment in those days. Mr Outram had no requirement for the "slipper" and "flying chalk", as other former pupils will no doubt recall from those days at the school. My father worked for the engineering firm Moore & Wright who had a factory in Green Lane. On one occasion he wanted to take me out of school for a day to travel with him to the British Industries Fair at Castle Bromwich where Moore & Wright had a trade stand. Mr Outram explained that the school could not grant a day off for such purposes, but with a "nod and a wink" suggested that a oneday sick note would be in order. I got my day out, and the school records were kept in order! Robert Chappell, Hereford Dear Dronfield Eye, I READ your kind words about Nellie Hallatt who passed away last month. Nellie will be missed by all of us in the village. I am writing to you as we recently opened our

garden as part of the Coal Aston Open Garden Day in which we served refreshments with all the donations going to the Coal Aston War Memorial appeal, however quite a few people did say that we should have some kind of memorial in remembrance of Nellie. So we wondered what might be tasteful and what would be a appropriate tribute for Nellie, who was once the landlady of the Cross Daggers and in her later days ran the village paper and sweetie shop. We came up with the idea that a nice plaque fitted to the bench outside the Daggers and looking over to Nellie’s sweetie shop would be fitting. We have spoken to Anthony the landlord of the pub and he is more than happy to allow us to fit a plaque on his bench outside the pub and he also very happy to give the bench a good sand down and a few coats of creosote so it is in keeping with a nice new plaque. We do understand things like this can be very delicate so we have spoken to Jenny, Nellie's daughter, to see if she would be happy with this arrangement and feel it would be nice for her to choose the wording which will appear on the plaque. I would like to ask if it would be at all possible for you to would publish these details should anyone wish to make a donation towards the plaque. Donations can be made either to us directly at the address below Peter Bennett and Anita Rothery, Blacksmith's Cottage, 87 Eckington Road, Coal Aston
Dear Dronfield Eye, DURING the last financial year £12,823 has been raised locally for Christian Aid. £7,336 came from the annual house-to-house collection in May and £5,346 from The Lent Project. We were able to allocate £5,000 to a specific african project, and the European Community promised to add £3 to every £1 that we raised so that £5,000 became £20,000. Thank you to all who have helped in the past year and all the generous people who donated. Our next big fund raising event will be our annual Coffee Morning and sale of paper-backed books at the Civic Hall on October 9th. David Grime, Treasurer, Christian Aid, Manor Crescent, Dronfield Dear Dronfield Eye, I THOUGHT I should let your readers know that advertising in the Dronfield Eye really works. We hoped to attract new members for our ‘Happy Circle’ which meets at St Paul’s Methodist Church every Wednesday 2pm to 4pm for a chance to dance and socialise. The week after our advert was printed, we got five new members including three ‘young’ ladies of 55, 57, 59 which will significantly reduce our average age. Although the newcomers didn’t pick up all the dances straight away, they had a go and enjoyed a cup of tea and biscuit in the interval. Thank you Dronfield Eye. Happy Circle members

WAXING has never been as pain wax and leave it to set before quickly peeling it off. free as the new hot wax The advantage of hot wax is that you don’t treatment at Passion, which is especially get the same stinging and tenderness designed for more delicate areas. I went along to the popular Dronfield salon, located in the Civic Centre, to find out about the benefits of waxing and to try out the hot wax treatment for myself. With more than seven years experience in waxing, I knew I was in safe hands with beauty therapist Rachel Pashley, who immediately made me feel relaxed and welcome. Rachel, of Princess Road, Dronfield, has been working as the beauty therapist at Passion for a year and alongside waxing also does facials and nails, which she has more than ten years experience in. She explained that whereas with warm wax you use strips and rip them off to tear out the hair, with hot wax you apply a thicker layer of

afterwards that you do with strips and the hair can be removed when it’s shorter. Rachel added: “There’s less redness and discomfort with hot wax. It’s mainly for small, delicate areas like the under-arm and bikini line. It’s perfect for Brazilians and Hollywoods too. It makes waxing as pleasurable as can be.” Having never waxed my under arms before I was expecting the worst, but I needn’t have worried because it was no worse than pulling off a plaster and, although a hot wax takes slightly longer than using strips, it hardly took any time at all. Talking in the private, comfortable room where all the waxing is done, Rachel said: “Hot waxing isn’t new but it’s starting to get more popular again, especially in Sheffield.
People prefer it and they come in and request it.” Waxing has many benefits over shaving, and only needs to be done every four to six weeks, depending on hair growth. You don’t get a rash, there’s less chance of in-growing hairs and the hair re-grows slower and finer, to the point where eventually often the hair doesn’t grow back. I would definitely recommend the hot waxing to anyone, whether new to waxing like myself or experienced waxes, and I’ll be back before my holiday. The experienced team at Passion offers a range of different treatments alongside waxing, including hairdressing, manicures, pedicures and spray tans. They operate late night openings until 9pm Wednesday and Thursday and booking is advised at all times. Passion, Civic Centre, Dronfield, tel 01246 415972.

NHS patients of 3SL Dental have been treated to a brand new surgery at a smart new location. Officially opened by Dronfield’s MP Natascha Engel, the new location, alongside Stubley Medical Centre, has two surgeries and is welcoming new and old NHS patients. Owners of 3SL, David and Jennie Ward, of Holmesfield, have more than 40 years of experience between them and are keen to dispel the myth that NHS waiting lists are impossibly long. With regards to the high quality services offered at the friendly, family-run practice, David explained: “We have one-off sessions for treating people that haven’t seen a dentist in the last year and have problems they need fixing.” Located just up the road from the original 3SL dental surgery, off Stubley Lane, which is now solely for private care, the new, modern, child-friendly surgery will house a dentist and, on some days, also a therapist. All too aware of the fear some people have of the dentist, Jennie added: “We’re trying to make it nice to visit the dentist. Some people seem to hate the smell so we’re use lavender and lime grass in the surgery to change that.” David and Jennie are also just about to launch another practice in Sheffield. Dronfield’s Hazel Helliwell writes: Many of you have asked me why I chose a Commander and the police force for my main characters. As I have told you previously Love Never Fails began in my mind in October 2007 after two more of our young soldiers had been killed in Afghanistan, and possibly there was unforgiveness and hurt in the bereaved. So, I needed someone carrying unforgiveness who should have known better. The character mustn’t be bland but have impact. I prayed and searched my mind. Right someone in authority- police. Who? What about a Commander in the London Metropolitan police force? Yes. A lady who has lost someone she loved. Her fiancé had been killed in Afghanistan 4 years previously and, unknown to only him, she had accused his Colonel of neglect.. Amanda was born a Christian, super intelligent, highly SAS trained action girl, and with her expertise a Commander at the age of 26. Then I have been questioned, why Italians in the story? When I was a young girl through a relative for a while I knew an Italian family and I loved them. They were glamorous and I have never forgotten them. Another question is “why did I use a pen name?” ‘Samantha’ is for personal reasons and ‘Arran’ because when I was 17 years old our Ranger group went with our captain to the Isle of Arran, Scotland. We were climbing Goat Fell, 2,856 feet with a male tour guide when a thick cloud descended as we climbed up slippery loose stones. It was very scary. When we reached the summit I was thanking God I had achieved it. So, I chose ‘Arran’ as I have never forgotten this victory. The times in my life when I have been faced with a difficulty I have remembered the Isle of Arran and how God helped me. My friends laugh about me writing about wines as if I am an expert when they know I am teetotal! There's nothing wrong with alcohol in moderation.
Dronfield in Bloom is a voluntary committee celebrating their 20th anniversary this year. They aim to make Dronfield a better place in which to live, work and play. This is one of the needs Unfailing Love’s royalties is supporting (see June Dronfield Eye for more details of Dronfield in Bloom.) I chose kites for the front cover as the family, friends and community greatly enjoyed this all-age healthy sport, having relaxed fun together.
You will appreciate when writing one has to be very careful; once written and published things cannot be altered. I have done intensive research through the Internet, our local libraries and my son Stephen has helped me greatly with studying maps for my four books. My fourth book will be published shortly; a second sequel to Love Never Fails. This one again will be paperback, 223 pages, price £7.99. The causes to receive the royalties from this will be the Salvation Army, Dr Barnardos and RSPCA. I have called it A New Beginning because this is what it is. With Amanda being unable to ride Tarquin or any horse after her knee was shattered, Tarquin lived at a trusted stud farm to perform. An Irish family horse business bought a colt and two mares of Tarquin’s and through this a great love between the Young family and the Irish family was born. This not only blessed all of them but also the Derbyshire community. I am very grateful for a wonderful friend Robin putting me in touch with one of his relatives in Ireland who answered a query I had and who also provided beautiful Irish names I have used with great pleasure. Last but by no means the least, I give God all the Glory for how I have loved creating these four books and prayerfully I will continue when I am inspired. "Love Never Fails, Unfailing Love and Jason and Marigold" are available from Amazon, Waterstones, www.ahstockwell.co.uk and all good book shops.

Quality Products...
WHEN Sonia and Brian Pickering moved to the area a year ago, they needed almost the whole of their new house re-carpeting on a budget without sacrificing quality; and Layers had just the answer. The couple, who moved to Dronfield from Yorkshire to be closer to their daughter and two grandchildren, have had carpet on the stairs, landing and three bedrooms, with luxury vinyl tiles downstairs in the kitchen, hall and study, laid by the excellent team of fitters from Layers. Sonia, of Solway Rise, said: “Layers have been fantastic. Together, we spent a lot of time working out what we wanted downstairs. They have been really helpful and really good. “They even came and took our lounge carpet up and safely stored it for us while we were re-wiring and then brought it back and relaid it.” The professional team at Layers particularly impressed the couple with how understanding they were about time and budget constraints, as the rooms were being decorated one at a time. Praising the personal attention they received, Sonia explained:
“The staff really spend a lot of time with you. They were really nice and lovely. They laid everything out so we could see what it would look like before we put it down and they didn’t leave any mess; they always left it nice and clean. After reading several testimonials in Dronfield Eye, Sonia and Brian got in touch with Layers at Hilltop, who offer a full service, from an initial consultation, to a measuring and fitting service; even helping to move furniture and dispose of old carpet. Layers laid down a stunning striped Telenzo Piccadilly on the stairs and landing and an eye-catching Cormar natural berber twist in the bedrooms. Then to complete the perfect look, Layers also put down beautiful damastone Knight Tiles by Karndean in the kitchen, finished off with a subtle border, creating a bespoke design unique to their home. Sonia added: “The house was done from top to bottom. They have been very good and I would definitely recommend them. They just go that extra bit further for you, particularly in sticking to your budget. They sat down and sorted it out with us. Now our grandchildren will be putting it to the test during their summer holidays!”
