Pentangle Arts Council Woodstock Town Hall Theatre For the past 36 years Pentangle Arts Council has been the cultural catalyst for Woodstock, Vermont and its surrounding towns. Pentangle’s mission to present and maintain an arts program of high quality for the enrichment of our community and schools encourages meaningful multi-generational arts experiences for audiences of all ages. Pentangle’s chief venue, Woodstock Town Hall Theatre, is busy over 250 days per year presenting a diverse selection of live events and first-run movies to an audience of more than 30,000 patrons annually. A prominent fixture in Woodstock’s historic village, the Town Hall Theatre is a proscenium theatre of neoclassical design with 400 seats, a raked floor, and outstanding natural acoustics, and has seen continuous use since its construction in 1900 as the Woodstock Opera House. Pentangle’s many programs both at the Town Hall Theatre and at other venues throughout the community enhance the quality of life here and contribute directly to the cultural and economic vitality of Ottauquechee/Upper Valley Region.

Welcome! Maybe you’ve seen the headlines: Scientists Discover New Sustainable Energy Source: The Arts. The evidence is overwhelming; we’ve all experienced the electrifying aura that surrounds a great performance. For time immemorial, patrons of the arts have known: at its most elemental, art makes us feel more alive! In these times we can all use a little “Artistic Energy” in our lives. Over millennia, the arts have provided a constant source of renewable energy for millions who have grasped and converted their inspiration. Somewhere between mystery and familiarity, live art fills a void, acting upon our inertia with a power and immediacy that few other experiences can replicate. This season, the Town Hall Theatre welcomes the diversity and vigor of artistic dynamos: Scottish folk icon Dougie MacLean…a Tony Award-winning show featuring its entire original Broadway cast – The Two and Only!...VPR’s host of From the Top and virtuoso pianist Christopher O’Riley…Vermont Symphony Orchestra’s signature Made in Vermont program…the pinnacle of traditional and progressive bluegrass paired side-byside: Dailey & Vincent and Crooked Still…“Future of the Celtic fiddle” & “Jimi Hendrix of the violin” Eileen Ivers…the lighter-than-air levity of Fred Garbo Inflatable Theatre…&c. We’re also thrilled to have Pentangle Players back with The Sound of Music—a selfgenerating, off-the-grid community-wide production sure to delight all ages. Sponsors, advertisers, donors, members and supporting foundations help us to harness the talents of these amazing artists for you, and for this we are immensely grateful. This playbill spotlights Pentangle’s main stage season—live events which occur almost exclusively on the Town Hall Theatre stage from September through May. What you won’t see here however are Pentangle’s in-school residency activities; visual arts initiatives; summer programs like Bookstock, the popular Summer @ Six and Brown Bag Concert Series, and our Woodstock Chamber Music Series; and many partnerships with local organizations—semiconductors that enable art’s energy to travel well beyond these theatre walls, energizing our community and those who visit here. Sometimes great art makes us want to jump up and dance, sing or act…sometimes the transfer of that energy is less kinetic & more subtle—an afterglow that stays with us for days, weeks or even years. Photovoltaic arrays & wind turbines may not be visible on stage, but the creative vitality of art’s perpetually replenishing charge is unmistakable. There’s nothing quite as stimulating as being part of a live performance that will never happen the same way again. We’re delighted you decided to join us today and hope the energy of this performance sustains you long after the curtain closes. Enjoy!

Pentangle Players Present
Rodgers and Hammerstein’s
The Sound of Music Directed by R Lee Adams
October 15, 16, 22 & 23 @ 7:30pm October 24 @ 2pm “The Sound of Music,” “Edelweiss,” “My Favorite Things,” “Climb Ev’ry Mountain,” “DoRe-Mi”... a musical theatre favorite!
The final collaboration between Rodgers & Hammerstein was destined to become the world’s most beloved musical. When a postulant proves too high-spirited for the religious life, she is dispatched to serve as governess for the seven children of a widowed naval Captain. Her growing rapport with the youngsters, coupled with her generosity of spirit, gradually captures the heart of the stern Captain, and they marry. Upon returning from their honeymoon they discover that Austria has been invaded by the Nazis, who demand the Captain’s immediate service in their navy. The family’s narrow escape over the mountains to Switzerland on the eve of World War II provides one of the most thrilling and inspirational finales ever presented in the theatre. Acoustic Little Feat:
Paul Barrere & Fred Tackett Benefit for the Upper Valley Haven Friday, November 5 7:30pm Guitarists and frontmen of the legendary band Little Feat, Paul Barrere and Fred Tackett have joined forces to form an acoustic duet that will quite frankly blow you away. Paul and Fred perform songs from their Little Feat catalogue and more with a decidedly different twist. They first played together on the album Dixie Chicken some thirty-five years ago and since then have played together or individually on numerous recording sessions for Little Feat and countless others including Bonnie Raitt, Taj Mahal, Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, Dionne Farris, and the Wallflowers to name a few. The Upper Valley Haven is a private not-for-profit organization, founded in 1980, that provides temporary shelter for homeless families and adults, as well as food, clothing and educational programming to those in need. All Haven services are provided free of charge. Since 1980, the Haven has fostered independence by providing resources through their Shelter Advocacy, Aftercare and Educational programs.

Crooked Still and Dailey & Vincent Saturday, November 20 7:30pm “Crooked Still’s vision of string band and bluegrass music sounds like nobody else’s... they play their instruments gorgeously, radiating warmth and [a] deep love of the music and songs they play. Aoife O’Donovan has a voice of rare, stunning purity and clarity.” —Sing Out! An unlikely combination of banjo, cello, and double-bass drives Crooked Still, the hot young alternative bluegrass group on a mission to bend the boundaries of traditional music. This low lonesome band’s captivating vocals and high-wire solos have enraptured audiences all over.

“No one captures the eerie, gorgeous menace of classic Anglo-American folk ballads like this Boston band.” (Ken Barnes, USA Today) Jamie Dailey and Darrin Vincent became the most heralded new act in bluegrass as their debut album Dailey & Vincent (2008) and busy tour schedule introduced them to wildly appreciative audiences. The group took home seven awards at the 2008 International Bluegrass Music Awards Show, including Entertainer of the Year and Album of the Year. Brothers from Different Mothers (2009) presents the band at a level of synergy that only comes from constant live performing. Jamie Dailey and Darrin Vincent have been bluegrass musicians throughout their careers and never depart from that core sensibility. But, like the earliest icons, they also push the bluegrass envelope. Best of all, they’ve found the closest thing to brotherhood—a true musical partnership.

‘An Nollaig —
’
An Irish Christmas
Friday, December 10 7:30pm “...the future of the Celtic fiddle.” —The Washington Post “...the Jimi Hendrix of the violin.”—The New York Times Eileen Ivers captures the spirit and magic of the season in her heartwarming holiday show: An Nollaig — An Irish Christmas. Each year, there is a great swell of anticipation for the grand celebrations surrounding Christmas in Ireland. There is the clamor and delight of Christmas Eve, the peace and beauty of Christmas Day and the lively parties the day after (St. Stephen’s Day or Boxing Day) when the “Wren Boys” don their straw hats, dance at the crossroads, play their pipes, drums and fiddles and collect gifts for the less fortunate. Families entertain each other as they have for centuries with stories and music and Eileen Ivers shares these joyful Irish customs which are still reveled in today. The program features traditional Irish songs, original tunes and holiday favorites specially arranged by Eileen Ivers and Immigrant Soul such as The Holly Tree, Don Oiche Ud im Beithil (One Night in Bethlehem), Hark the Herald Angels (in traditional jig time), The Wexford Carol (12th century Irish Christmas Carol) and many others. Christopher O’Riley Friday, February 25 7:30pm Meet the Host Talk 5:30pm Pianist Christopher O’Riley’s reimagining of works by Radiohead, R.E.M., Nirvana, Pink Floyd, The Smiths, Portishead and other contemporary artists have garnered critical accolades and international acclaim, including the only four-star review ever given by Rolling Stone to a classical pianist. As host of the popular NPR music program, From the Top, Mr. O’Riley is well-known for his eloquent and compelling musings on music and popular culture. His latest performances stretch the piano beyond the classical repertoire and into the rich uncharted territory of contemporary and alt-rock. Announcing the program from the stage allows O’Riley to share discoveries and explore paths in and out of this wealth of material. The music flows seamlessly from one genre to another, from the familiar to the fresh. From Robert Pollard to Rickie Lee Jones to Maurice Ravel; A Perfect Circle to Piazzolla; Thomas Ades to John Adams to Toru Takemitsu to Nine Inch Nails. Christopher O’Riley is recognized as one of the leading American pianists of his generation, touring extensively as a recitalist and chamber musician and appearing with every major orchestra. Jay Johnson:
The Two and Only! Thursday, March 10 7:30pm Winner of the 2007 Tony Award for Best Special Theatrical Event “a feat of sheer virtuosity.” —The New York Post Remember the last time a Tony Award-winning show featuring its entire original Broadway cast performed at Woodstock Town Hall Theatre? Me neither. That’s because it hasn’t happened (at least not yet)…and why you won’t want to miss Jay Johnson’s hilarious and touching masterpiece about finding your voice and following your dreams. In his 30 plus-year career, Jay Johnson has delighted audiences with his unique blend of charm, anarchy and innovative wit. Best known for playing the schizophrenic role of Chuck and Bob on the groundbreaking television comedy, Soap, Johnson is widely regarded as one of the world’s great living ventriloquists. In Jay Johnson: The Two and Only! he deconstructs and demonstrates his lifelong obsession, aided by a “cast” that includes ‘Bob,’ ‘Amigo,’‘Darwin,’ ‘Long John La Feat,’ ‘Nethernore – the bird of Death,’ ‘Spaulding,’ ‘Arthur Drew,’ ‘Jackie and Ga Ga,’ and ‘Squeaky.’ Jay Johnson: The Two and Only! opened on September 28, 2006 at the Helen Hayes Theatre and quickly became the most talked about show of the season. Time Out called it “a rare and hilarious treat,” while the Associated Press said it was “splendid, hilarious, giddy entertainment.” Sponsored by Williamson Group Sotheby’s International Realty and Blue Horse Inn Media Sponsor:

Voted Best Traditional / Folk Group by Ireland’s premier music magazine Hot Press, Dervish is more in demand than ever. The band’s colorful career has taken it to every corner of the globe and has seen it share center stage with such names as James Brown, The Buena Vista Social Club, Oasis, Sting, REM, Beck and many more.
