“Helgy”

For Eugene Helgeson 1942-1968

...whose passion for today unleashed a free spirit, a quest for adventure and great joy. ...whose sense of tomorrow did not include expectation for long life, but did lead to match-making that lives on and has bred a family that may carry forward forever. Author’s Note: Gene and I met on Cape Cod during the summer of 1964. On September 26, he organized a blind date for me to meet his fraternity brother. It was Lee’s 20th birthday, and we married within a year. In early March of 1968, Gene died serving his country in Vietnam. The troop plane that he was piloting took enemy fire as it attempted to land at a Khe Sanh military airstrip.

Vietnam, a country filled with captivating natural beauty and tranquil village life. Its highlands continue to yield exotic wildlife. Its islands and beaches are among the finest in Southeast Asia. Vietnam is a verdant tapestry of soaring mountains, fertile deltas, sinuous rivers, and heavenly water falls. Legend has it that Vietnam’s origin lay in the harmonious union of Lac Long Quan, king of the sea, and Au Co, princess of the mountains. Vietnamese people today live, laugh and love.
