In June, there will be a party for the children in the playground when a giant 50th birthday cake, baked by a parent governor, will be cut, and 1000 crocus bulbs will be planted by the children in the school grounds in the autumn. A teak seat for the playground has been presented to the school by the parents of Dr Thorpe, a past pupil and governor of the school, who died 2 years ago. The money to pay for the celebrations has been raised by the children themselves; the older children have been taking part in sponsored spelling tests and the younger ones in a sponsored ‘hush’. Mrs Marion Ewens, head teacher of Hertford Road, said she was delighted that staff, children and parents had shown so much enthusiasm in planning the festivities. She continued, “The school’s first 50 years have been happy and fruitful ones and we wanted the anniversary celebrations to reflect that happiness. I hope that in our jubilee year, we shall have the pleasure of welcoming back to the school many of our past pupils and staff and that the local community will join in the spirit of the occasion by coming along to see the exhibition.
