How we manage our centres‌ We see running our centres as a core part of what we do as Hertfordshire Scouts, and we are constantly working to find creative ways to provide even more support for leaders and opportunities for young people. The in-county centres are managed by the Activity Centres Management Committee, formed of our Centre Managers and Trustee Members. Lochearnhead has a dedicated Management Committee, reflecting the specialist nature of the facilities and activities it has on offer and the differences between Scottish and English law. Both committees are chaired by a Trustee and report to our County Executive.

Welcome to our second Activity Centres Calendar and Guide! Already so many of you have joined us in Getting Outdoors More at our centres and this guide is packed with yet more ideas to inspire you. One of our most inspiring projects so far this year has been the refurbishment of Stag Cottage and regeneration of Harmergreen Wood. This was made possible by our own Hertfordshire Scouts Unity Lottery and a lot of volunteer effort by Explorers and Crew from Tolmers. We look forward to welcoming you for your back to basics camping. If you are looking for a last minute summer camp, Come To Tolmers still has spaces and promises to be another amazing event – check out the Tolmers website for more details. With free evening use of the centres available to help you with your summer programme we look forward to seeing even more groups – please just remember to let the bookings team know you are coming. If there is anything else that you would like to see our centres offer, please talk with Chris and Doug, our Centre Managers or their teams when you visit - or feel free to drop me an e-mail.

18 - 20 October 2019 Peak Assault is Hertfordshire Scouts’ most challenging competition organised for members of the Scout Association aged 14 and over and is now in its 52nd year. The competitors must use their orienteering skills, physical ability and mental strength to navigate their way across unforgiving terrain ‘clipping’ as many checkpoints as they can within the allotted time. The competitors must also carry all the equipment they will need for a night on the hills. Each year the location is a closely guarded secret, only known to a select few right up until the start of the event. Likely locations are within the National Parks of England and Wales. Some competitors arrive home after a tough weekend not even knowing where they have been. There are three competition classes, Explorer (14 – 18), Network (18 – 25) and Senior (25+) and two courses, Mountain (using all the terrain and area available) and Moorland (generally lower terrain and reduced distance). Visiting teams from other Counties or organisations (e.g. Girl Guiding, Cadets) are welcome in all 3 classes. Training Teams (which have an experienced adult to accompany) can enter the Explorer class.

To achieve the Green Beret Challenge, teams compete in FOUR elements: Orienteering, Assault Course, Challenge Incidents (Daytime) and a Night Exercise. Not sure about first aid or first response? With changes made earlier this year by The Scout Association in first aid training requirements, the County Training Team have put together a handy guide which can be found online: www.hertfordshirescouts.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/First-Aid-in-Scouting.pdf

Which courses are acceptable, and which are not? The factsheet for Full First Aid can be accessed here: https://members.scouts. org.uk/fs120052. There is a long list of courses that are acceptable to Scouting but essentially, they need to be: • • • •

Set by a reputable body, such as NYA, BCU, St John Ambulance, HSE Involve at least six hours of training Cover the main areas of the First Response syllabus. Delivered by an adult holding a full First Aid qualification.

Take the quiz! For anyone who has completed a First Aid course outside of Scouting there is now a ‘Check Your Knowledge’ quiz that may help identify if you have met the requirements for validation of First Aid training. https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSezXTmHsOGwn8nQ9KIASB3El_ LcQ5VDTzeW90fchMLOT2hMnw/viewform
