A Message from the President I am delighted to welcome all members, guests and visitors to Leverstock Green Cricket Club for the 2010 season. We had anticipated that 2009 might have been an anti-climax after the Club’s wonderful Centenary Year of 2008. However, the season past was again enjoyable, exciting and productive. Our first Eleven was competitive in Division One and did just enough to stay in this challenging, high standard division. It will obviously take a great deal of effort and commitment on behalf of the Club and the first team players to maintain this prestigious position in the Hertfordshire League. I wish the first team squad all the very best for the coming season. The Second Eleven, under the committed leadership of Richard Walker did very well, at the first attempt, to return to Division Five. Here, the competition will again be intense as our team will be competing against club first elevens as well as other high standard second teams. Mike Parkes’ Third Team stabilised itself in Division Nine and is well aware of the standard needed to be promoted yet again. Mike’s team performed very capably and after the prospect of promotion receded, the needs of other Club teams were given a higher priority. I am sure that the Third Team will be looking to press hard towards Division Eight during 2010. The Fourth Eleven appeared to be “dead and buried” and heading out of Division Twelve at the season’s half-way mark. However, an excellent late run of wins and other high scoring results meant that the team required only seven points from the last game of the season to stay up. These were duly gained and Dave Cardy’s team celebrated its amazing Houdini act.

I do hope that all four teams will achieve their targets in the coming season. Certainly, the playing strength is better than it has been for some seasons and it is encouraging that the younger players are being “blooded” in the Fourth and Third Teams before progressing higher, as they become more experienced. The Club’s Youth Section is in the very capable hands of Brad Klosterman and the other coaches, managers and helpers. The most impressive achievement was that of the U11's team becoming Hertfordshire Champions. Congratulations to all concerned! The Youth Section performs a very important function: it provides good quality coaching for young playing members; enables them to play enjoyable and competitive cricket and it provides a pool of young players, who will enter the senior squads. And, importantly, being able to play cricket at club level (or beyond) will give our young players the potential to enjoy their cricket for many years and to make many friends. On the social and club management front, Leverstock Green Cricket Club continues to go from strength to strength. It should not be under-estimated how much time and effort our Club officers put in to ensure that the Club is well-run and successful. The pavilion and ground are well looked after; the bar is run effectively thanks to a willing team of volunteers; and the Club also thinks of others less fortunate, raising substantial sums of money for Charity. The important occasions of Cricket Week, Ashes Day and the Annual Dinner and Dance all went off with panâche, showcasing the style and distinction of Leverstock Green Cricket Club. I do hope that 2010 will be a memorable, enjoyable and successful one for all members and friends of the Club.

Brian Coulshed

A Message from the Club Captain I would like to welcome you all to the 2010 season and hope you will join me in following the progress of our Junior and Senior teams throughout the forthcoming season. Last year was again a successful season for the Club with the highlight being the Under 11’s bringing home the County Champions Trophy. Our Under 14 team finished a commendable 4th whilst three of the four senior teams consolidated their positions in the league. The one exception being the 2nd XI who went one better and gained promotion to the 5th Division. The Club also received Clubmark status which will allow the Club to progress in a variety of ways in 2010 and beyond. 2010 will see some improvements to the clubhouse and the possibility of an all girls team. We will again see an abundance of league cricket in both Juniors and Seniors, the LGCC Ashes, Cricket Week and a host of Cup matches. That means a lot of cricket at the Green in 2010 and I look forward to seeing you all there. Sam Mazurek will take on the role of 1st team captain for the first time this season and I wish him well. I would like to thank Brent Mullett for his performances over the past two seasons. Alex King, another Tasmanian, will be our overseas player for 2010 and he comes highly recommended. I hope everyone will make him feel welcome over the coming season. Richard Walker, Mike Parkes and Dave Cardy are all returning to lead their respective teams. I would like to wish all of them well and look forward to seeing all our sides finish in the top half of their respective leagues this season. 2010 could be an important year in the future of Leverstock Green. Our Junior cricket is flourishing, the Seniors are

moving forward and the achievement of Clubmark should enable us to improve our funding and facilities. This can only mean positive things going forward as long as we work together to make Leverstock Green the leading amateur club in the UK.

Events for 2010 I am very pleased to be continuing my role as Social Events Co-ordinator this year and am happy to welcome Gabrielle Bates and Dawn Wright to the 'team'. This year we have several events already planned including a countryside ramble in April, several music events to celebrate popular festivals and holidays, evenings to support England in the World Cup in June and of course the LGCC Ashes in July. The Last Night of the Proms was a fantastic evening last year and we are looking forward to another fun evening in September. There will also be other events popping up throughout the year and we hope to see as many of you as possible at the cricket club. Look on the Club notice board and watch out for your e-mails which will give you details as we hope there will be an event for everyone to enjoy. Kind regards and wishing you all a healthy and happy 2010.

LGCC Ashes 2009 The 2009 LGCC Ashes saw Leverstock Green finally wrestle the trophy away from St Albans winning the event 3-2. It was left to the Seniors to decide the result and after some indifferent cricket they managed to take the match to return the trophy to the Green. This year’s event will be held on Sunday 11th July. The day will take on a slightly different format this year but we will still see 5 matches deciding the trophy and the children competing in a single wicket competition. The day will finish up with the World Cup final on the big screen at 7-30pm. St Albans will again be returning to continue the battle for the trophy. Once again I would like to thank the many people that help make it a successful day

Brad Klosterman LGCC Head Coach

Ashes Day this year will be Sunday 11th July 2010 19

Leverstock Green Junior Cricket 2009 saw Leverstock Green reach new heights with two teams making it through to the Herts County Finals. The Under 14’s finished a creditable 4th whilst the Under 11’s improved on last year’s Divisional runners up to become the 2009 County Champions! In what was probably one of the most exciting games I have ever seen the boys managed to win the title on the final ball and earn themselves a trip to Wembley where they were presented with the winners' shield. As a club we can be proud of what we have achieved in the development of our junior cricketers. In 2009, our intake of Under 8’s was double that of the previous year which is fantastic to see. There are a few boys that will move into their first year of Under 10’s and I wish them every success. Again, Neil Fleming and Dave Tyson did an excellent job with their relevant teams but to keep our club moving forward we require more coaches, assistants and scorers. In saying that, I must thank those parents that have given up their time to assist the coaching team. 2010 will see the club field 5 teams in the Herts Junior League. This season will see us running teams in Under 10, 12, 13, 14, and 15 age groups. With numbers increasing we may also see an all girls team develop. Dayle Littlejohn completed his ECB Level 1 during the winter and will be a welcome addition to the coaching team. Sam Mazurek and Alex King, our overseas player for 2010, will also take on the coaching of the Under 13’s when they arrive in late April from Tasmania. 20

The Under 8’s will continue again this season and if numbers are similar to last year we may see an intra-club festival day to give the children the opportunity to show their skills in a match situation. Again we have a good number of juniors that made it through to the district and area training squads. Leverstock Green is represented in Under 11’s – Jake Morgan (district) - Under 12’s – Daniel Lake and Lewis Glasscoe (Area) – Under 13’s - Johnny Pitts (Area) - Under 14’s - Sam Revell (Area) and Under 15 – Matthew Lake and Tom Callingham (Area), James Kavanagh (District). A number of these have also been selected in the final squads to compete in various matches in 2010. We will be hosting a number of the District and Area matches so come along and support your mates or just come and enjoy some quality cricket. Our Under 15’s, through making the County semi-finals in 2009 will compete in the 2010 National Knockout Competition. I wish them all the best and hope the club get behind them in their endeavours to progress further through the competition. 2009 was a highly successful season for our juniors and I would like to think we can at least equal the achievements of last year, if not exceed them! Either way, I am sure they will give their all and I look forward to another ‘hot’ summer and some exciting junior cricket.

Short History of Leverstock Green Cricket Club The game of cricket was first played on a regular basis in Leverstock Green during the 1920’s, though its formation can be traced back to 1908. Matches were played on farmland off Pancake Lane for some years, then, when the land was needed, the Club moved a short distance to Cherry Tree Lane. The team, consisting mainly of members of Fun on the Green - Cricket Week 2003 the village, played regular Saturday matches until the end of the 1939 season, when, due to the outbreak of the Second World War, it was reluctantly forced to disband. It was not until 1958, almost twenty years later, that several players from those early days, together with local residents both old and new, managed to persuade the authorities to allow the ground as we know it today to be used as a cricket pitch. This then became the new home of Leverstock Green Cricket Club. Only one eleven played at this time, with a fixture list for both Saturday and Sunday games. In 1964 a second eleven was formed and over the years increasing membership enabled the Club to field three regular elevens within the Hertfordshire Cricket League. A regular fourth XI was formed in 2005 and joined Division Thirteen of the Herts League two years later. 36

President's Day 1983

The Club can also boast successful junior sides. As the Club moved into the new millennium, juniors as young as seven were encouraged to join in. Through the dedication and hard work of a number of senior members and players, the Club currently runs junior sides across five age groups. The Club continues to move from strength to strength with a dedicated committee and strong band of volunteers. The whole Club can be proud of what we have achieved. With over 300 members, a thriving social membership and excellent facilities we have come a long way from the early days in Pancake Lane!

Planning for the annual London to Brighton in June is in full flow and many of the participants are gearing up and have started their training already! Last year the efforts of the riders, many new to the saddle, produced over £2000 in sponsorship for the British Heart Foundation taking the total raised to almost £38,000. Lets hope we can burst through the £40,000 total in 2010. The team also undertook a ride across England from Whitehaven to Newcastle following the route of Hadrian’s Wall. A wet start was the order of the three days, but the weather brightened up towards the final free wheel to Newcastle that was followed by an even wetter night of celebration . . . it’s not all about the cycling, internal lubrication is also important!

Other rides planned for this year include Hemel Hempstead to Southend-On-Sea and an epic spin from Hemel Hempstead to Paris that will take place in September and a new ride to our map holder is the Oxford to Cambridge Cycle Challenge in October. The Hemel Hempstead to Paris ride will be undertaken by myself, Kim Darker, Kevin Seggery, Gavin Smith, Gary Heath, Ian Threlfall, Colin French, Richard Stevens, Steve Surrey and Steve Wright who rode the route last year raising over ÂŁ800 for the Hospice of St Francis, Berkhamsted. Many thanks from Steve to all who sponsored him for the London to Paris ride. Support for the London to Paris ride will be provided by Edwin Bates who will be driving the support vehicle for the team. We are also looking for drivers to support us on the London to Brighton ride in June, so if you or or someone you know would be willing to assist us then please contact me. The cycling fraternity meets and rides most Sundays from March to October. If you would like to join us on one of our Sunday morning pedals please contact me. Once again, many thanks for your generous support over the last and previous years. Many thanks
