A Message from the President I am very pleased to welcome all members, sponsors, friends and guests of Leverstock Green Cricket Club to the Club for the 2014 season. The year of 2014 should prove to be a memorable one for LGCC as it will mark the Official Opening of our ‘new’ Clubhouse following years of expectations, planning and hard work; more of this later. Although the 2013 cricket season was not the Club’s most successful, there were many positive highlights. The First XI played very well in the second half of the season, winning most of their matches. Additionally, a few of our younger players started to blossom in league cricket and, for 2014, the age profile of both the First and Second XIs should be just about perfect. The First Team reached the final of the prestigious Heath Park Cup (formerly the Gazette Cup) for the second time in three years but suffered an agonising defeat as the opposition hit the six needed, off the last ball, in the evening twilight in front of a massive crowd. To say that the players and very large contingent of LGCC supporters were bitterly disappointed is an understatement. Dealing with that type of experience only makes us stronger and more determined for the future. Cricket Week was again blessed with beautiful sunny weather. A large crowd was attracted to the Green on the Friday when we had organised a match against old rivals, Hemel Hempstead Town C.C., with LGCC batsman, Sam Mazurek hitting the winning runs off the last ball. The match was played in memory of HHTCC Chairman, Roger Doodson, who died earlier in the Summer after a brave battle against cancer. It was an emotional occasion when both clubs honoured a wonderful sportsman and teacher, who was a much-loved member of our local, cricket community. The overall life and spirit of Leverstock Green Cricket Club was as active as ever with lots of events and activities organised to provide opportunities for the people of our local area and also to raise money for charities and our Capital Project. These comprised: Darts, Yoga, Cycling, Banjo playing, Quizzes, Race Nights, Vinyl Evenings, Carol Singing, Curry Evenings, Discos, Parties, Open Evenings, Burns Night and a Coffee Morning. Two of the biggest events were ‘Leatherstock’ (in partnership with the ‘Olde Leather Bottle’), a large-scale, open air music festival on the Green and ‘Steve Wilson’s Ton Up Auction’, which marked our Chairman’s first ever century and raised over £3000 for the Project. On 20th October, LGCC hosted lunch for about 60 members of the Professional Cricketers’ Association (PCA), who were taking part in a sponsored bike ride, visiting all the Test Match venues, whilst raising 6
money in memory of Tom Maynard of Surrey, who tragically died earlier in the year. The cyclists included some very famous cricketers such as Marcus Trescothick, Jos Buttler and Tom’s father, Matthew Maynard. The Sky Sports cameras were present and the PCA was very impressed with and grateful to our Club. Subsequently, the PCA has assisted our fundraising for the Capital Project. The Club’s Capital Project does, indeed, dominate everything at the moment. The Project began in September 2011 and, following over two years of very detailed planning, preparations and fundraising, building work started in November 2013 and was due to be finished by the beginning of the cricket season. A grand official opening ceremony has been planned to take place during Cricket Week when the Club will celebrate its wonderful achievement. The Capital Project comprises: a 60 square metre extension, incorporating new changing rooms for players and officials, with integral showers and toilets; remodelling and refurbishment of the existing Clubhouse, which provides a new kitchen, scorers’ area and scoreboard, new toilets and disabled facilities as well as a larger bar/social area with new ceilings and lighting. The extended building will be enhanced and weatherproofed by a new, pitched roof. All this will sustain LGCC for many years into the future as well as providing improved facilities for our members and local community. The Project has been initiated, progressed, managed and delivered by the Club’s Development Committee together with splendid support from a wide variety of Club members and supporters. It has been a real team effort. The Project has received financial support from: the England and Wales Cricket Trust (EWCT); Leverstock Green Parish Trust; Dacorum Borough Council; Wells & Young’s Brewery; donations and fundraising from Club members and sponsors; as well as savings and fundraising made by the Club over the last five years. We also received advice and support from the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), the Hertfordshire Cricket Board (HCB) and the Dacorum Borough Sports Development Department. LGCC is also very grateful to its major sponsors: Saunders Architects Partnership; Aitchisons Estate Agents; Herts Mechanical Handling Services (HMHS); Tornado Engineering; Best Rate FX Currency Exchange; Unique Cars Ltd.; Hicks and Co Accountants; DSL Licencing Ltd. (DSL); and the ‘Olde Leather Bottle’, who have all given generous support currently and recently. We live in exciting times at Leverstock Green. I sincerely hope that all our club members will enjoy the facilities that have been secured, will ‘seize the day’ (carpe diem!) and work together to raise standards still higher in our very distinctive and special community, cricket club. I wish you all an enjoyable season.

A Message from the Club Captain I am proud to be representing the cricketers of Leverstock Green CC as I follow Michael Wood into the Club Captain’s role, especially given what a momentous year it is for the future of this great Club. Here’s a little bit about me first of all, by way of introduction. A new member nine years ago, I’ve played in three of the Club’s four Saturday XIs and held team captain and vice-captain positions with both the Saturday 2nd XI and Sunday 1st XI. It’s not all been plain sailing though, because I was also subject to an enforced sunbathing break when I picked up a one-month playing ban for letting my ultracompetitive streak get the better of me a few years ago! Nobody’s perfect. It’s with all those experiences in mind that I hope to bring my trademark drive, passion and energy to make a success of every challenge undertaken as Club Captain. I believe strongly in the personal and playing qualities we have among the cricketers here and I am confident of their full backing in making 2014 a year of action and progress both on and off the field of play, in support of the amazing developments that have happened here at The Green. Experiences from my working life tell me that two-way communication is key to any success that we’re lucky enough to enjoy. I hope that a strong rapport with both senior and junior players, as well as with the tremendously hard-working Director of Junior Cricket Brad Klosterman, will allow me to get a true sense for what the players are thinking and hoping for – a feeling I can represent to the Management Committee to promote and properly represent the interests of all playing members at LGCC. As a group of players, we have a duty to play as full a part in Club life as we possibly can. The cricket itself is, of course, the focal point of summer life at the Club, but it’s just as much about the great people here. My aim is to bring the cricketers closer together than ever before with all other LGCC members, to strengthen and further the view that we’re part of a united, go-ahead and developing Club. 8
Focusing now on the cricket specifically, 2014 has provided us with a second chance, effectively. Our 1st XI were due to have been relegated last summer after a disappointing season, however a Herts League restructure – including the return of all of the county’s elite clubs – means that it’s Division Two cricket again this summer. While we all sacrifice a lot of time to play cricket, we need to adopt a much more professional approach all round. I expect our new overseas player Marc Simonds to add that professionalism and tenacity to the team and I hereby challenge the 1st XI, led by the legendary Dave Tyson, to be challenging for promotion throughout summer 2014. The job of Saturday XIs 2, 3 & 4 is to provide a platform for all players to enjoy their cricket while competing to win and promoting the best of the Club’s young talent by prioritising the importance of their role in each match. This will be a key focus of mine on both selection evenings and during Saturday matchdays. Other senior cricket will see Herts County Trophy action on a Sunday – and we hope to add some Sunday T20 friendlies with a view to sharpen all players for midweek action, where we’ve entered two teams in both the Watford Observer Fourteen14 and Heath Park (ex-Gazette) Cup competitions. It’s my job to ensure the cricket is just as successful as the rest of the Club’s progress in 2014 – but it will require a true team effort from all players if we are to reach our goals. Here’s to a fantastic year.

Cricket Week 2014 A full week of matches and events commences at lunchtime on Monday 21st July. The Friday of the week sees the Grand Opening of the New Pavilion. A well known ex-England batsman will be along to cut the ribbon for us and to enjoy the festivities. Keep an eye on the notice boards, website and social media for full details on this and other events. All members and their guests will be very welcome throughout the week so please put it in your diary. 9

Events for 2014 Much of the focus over this last year has been on raising money for the club re-development but that said we have still had a very good mixture of events that have been Social events as well as specific fund raising events. The main highlights over the last year have been: The Leatherstock 2013 concert held on the May Bank holiday weekend on the green was another great success, and was a repeat of the success of the first one that was held in 2012. This was also a great example of the club combining its efforts with other local businesses and clubs e.g. The Leather Bottle pub, Clarkes the butchers, and the local Tennis club. We had in excess of 2,500 people throughout the day enjoying the live music, and with all the gazeboes around the green it created a great atmosphere. Of course this year it is again planned to hold Leatherstock 2014 on Sunday 25th May, which will be co-ordinated by Claire Heath. The planning has already started so hopefully we will have another successful and enjoyable event. Other events throughout the last 12 months have included two race nights which were primarily held as fund raising events and both generated a combined total of over £1600. The race videos were supplied and run by an external company, to which we provided a team to run the tote, work out the odds, introduce the races and pay out the winnings – so a big thank you to them. We also ran a couple of ‘Vinyl Nights’ throughout the year (April and Nov) This is where you brought along your old vinyl records and paid £1 to play each record. It was great to hear the old 12
records from the 60s, 70s & 80s and everybody enjoyed being a DJ and playing their old records. To mark the end of the clubs annual Cricket week the social club held a BBQ and disco along with a raffle that also generated over £300 There was also the annual Burns night which is organised and run by Stewart Murdoch and was an enjoyable and well supported night with live music and a Haggis supper. The Sunday Quiz nights on the 1st Sunday in the month were also very well supported but we would always welcome new teams, so if any new members would like to form a team then please come along. This Christmas we organised Santa again for the kids and the Christmas party night was another good evening and the raffle generated another £200. This year’s New Year’s Eve party was a sell-out of the 100 tickets and was another great night. As well as the organised events throughout the year we also have a regular revenue stream generated by a meat raffle held every Friday night here in the club, and the Saturday Lottery bonus ball. These two themselves have helped to generate another £2500 over the year. So I have to thank the regular contributors to these two items as that £1 for a strip of raffle tickets and £1 for a bonus ball number do make a huge difference over the year. Also I have been very fortunate to have a team of people helping me throughout the year in arranging and running these events and without them it would have been very difficult so I would like to personally thank them, my wife Liz, Pat and Jim Angell, Mike Dark and Sandra. So in summary it has been a great year for the social side of the club, which has been fantastically supported by all of the club membership, and has helped to raise a significant amount of money both towards the club re-development and future events. Many thanks to everybody for your support and let’s make 2014 an equally successful year.

Leverstock Green Junior Cricket 2013 proved to be a tough season with two teams just missing out on quarter final positions but on a cheerful note it was great to see our U15’s win several matches after going winless over the previous two seasons. After a full season of decent weather, we had a number of outstanding individual performances that saw players win individual awards at our junior presentation. It was also great to see a number of our Under 15’s playing in senior cricket and doing well. The 2014 season will see the club field teams in Under 10, 11, 12, 14, 15 and 16 in the Herts Junior League. We are expecting big things this summer with the majority of our juniors completing winter training whilst a number of our players are also training with the Area cricket squads. Once again I extend a big thank you to all our age group coaches, who organise and run the games on evenings and at weekends and training on a weekend. Without these volunteers we could not run our junior teams. Tony Williams, our Chief Welfare Officer, is also critical to the continued success of the junior section in ensuring all coaches are aware of the rigorous standards expected of a Clubmark status cricket club. Our objectives in 2014 are: • To maintain the quality of coaching for all children and provide a safe and happy environment in which they can thrive. • To be more successful in terms of junior teams getting to Finals Day. • To provide a platform into senior cricket for junior players and coaching opportunities for U23’s • To develop first and second team players for the future With a new clubhouse to relax in, I look forward to seeing everyone out in force whether it be as a player or supporter during the 2014 summer and wish all our junior cricketers a thoroughly enjoyable and successful season.

Short History of Leverstock Green Cricket Club The game of cricket was first played on a regular basis in Leverstock Green during the 1920’s, though its formation can be traced back to 1908. Matches were played on farmland off Pancake Lane for some years, then, when the land was needed, the Club moved a short distance to Cherry Tree Lane. The team, consisting mainly of members of the village, played regular Saturday matches until the end of the 1939 season, when, due to the outbreak of the Second World War, it was reluctantly forced to disband. It was not until 1958, almost twenty years later, that several players from those early days, together with local residents both old and new, managed to persuade the authorities to allow the ground as we know it today to be used as a cricket pitch. This then became the new home of Leverstock Green Cricket Club.
Pavilion Opening in 1965
Only one eleven played at this time, with a fixture list for both Saturday and Sunday games. In 1964 a second eleven was formed and over the years increasing membership enabled the Club to field three regular 42
elevens within the Hertfordshire Cricket League. A regular fourth XI was formed in 2005 and joined Division Thirteen of the Herts League two years later. The Club can also boast successful junior sides. As the Club moved into the new millennium, juniors as young as seven were encouraged to join in. Through the dedication and hard work of a number of senior members and players, the Club currently runs junior sides across five age groups. The Club continues to move from strength to strength with a dedicated committee and strong band of volunteers. 2013 saw one of the most ambitious projects to date as we looked to considerably enhance the facilities. The development of two new changing rooms, redesigned club room, better kitchen, toilets, disabled facilities and a brand new roof were undertaken over the winter and ready for use for the first match of the 2014 season. A huge amount of time and effort has been put in to achieve this development with money from the ECB, LG Parish Trust, club members and other fund raising events. We really have provided a fantastic facility for future generations to enjoy the same opportunities we have all enjoyed over the years. With well over 300 members, a thriving social membership and excellent facilities we have come a long way from the early days in Pancake Lane!
