A Message from the President A very warm welcome is extended to all vice presidents, members, sponsors, friends and guests of Leverstock Green Cricket Club for the 2015 season. We start the season with great optimism as we enjoy the excellent facilities of our new Clubhouse. 2014 marked the completion of the Club’s three year, major capital project, which saw our Clubhouse extended, reroofed, remodelled, refurbished and virtually rebuilt. I hope very much that this will be the catalyst to usher LGCC into a ‘golden era’ both on and off the field of play. The Club Membership was delighted that Mike Gatting OBE, President of MCC agreed to officially open the new Clubhouse on 25th July 2014, during our annual Cricket Week celebrations. It was a great day in the history of LGCC and we were gratified that our guests included prominent members of our local community and Hertfordshire cricket as well as very large numbers of members and friends of the Club. Our team of the year was undoubtedly the 2nd XI, which swept all before it, comfortably winning the league as they became champions of Division Five. My congratulations go to the captain, Dayle Littlejohn and his team for their exceptional consistency throughout the season. Another highlight was that of the 1st XI winning the Watford Observer Plate Competition following an excellent cup final performance against Bushey CC. All our teams, both seniors and juniors, played with commitment and enthusiasm and each achieved success. My gratitude is expressed to the Club Captain, Richard Walker, who engendered a very positive ethos amongst the cricketers. They were strongly supportive of the Club’s aspirations and activities as well as providing entertainment for other members, not only on the cricket pitch! Their performance as a WWE wrestling troupe during Cricket Week will linger long in the memory of those privileged to witness it. Cricket Week was again a good advert for LGCC. England cricketer, Sarah Taylor, officially opened the Week. We were blessed again by hot, sunny weather, played good cricket and raised a lot of money for the Club through healthy bar takings; thank you to our volunteers! Thanks are also given to Cricket Week Co-ordinator Mike Parkes, to Richard Walker, the cricket 6
players and all who contributed to make it such an outstanding success. I wish all our cricketers an enjoyable and successful season and also warmly welcome to LGCC, Miles Barnard, our new overseas player, who joins us from Tasmania. The non-cricket playing club members also contributed enormously to the enjoyment and successes of 2014. A very large number of activities and events were arranged including: darts, banjo playing, yoga, cycling, quizzes, Burns, St. Patrick's and Race Nights, Cricket Week events, Christmas Fayre, children’s party, carol singing, Magic Evening, Presentation Events and a variety of parties. The largest event was ‘Leatherstock’, a large scale, open air music concert on the Green run by Claire Heath and a large contingent of helpers. Thanks must also be extended to Steve Purdy and his Social Committee, who masterminded many of these events and raised regular funds for the Club from weekly raffles and the legendary ‘Bonus Ball’. I also wish to express my appreciation of the contribution made by Steve Wilson, the outgoing Chairman. Steve, for over a decade in this important and demanding position, has been at the heart of the Club both leading and supporting all LGCC activities. I wish Steve Wright much success and satisfaction in his new role as Chairman. In 2015, Leverstock Green Cricket Club is undoubtedly a thriving cricket club and we are fortunate to be so well supported by our members, sponsors and local community. Long may this continue! I wish you all a very happy and successful season.

A Message from the Club Captain REPRESENTING the cricketers at this great club is a privilege and an honour – one I enjoyed immensely last year. Thank you to everyone for trusting in me for a second year as Club Captain. As a group of cricketers, we are immensely grateful for the work of so many in providing excellent clubhouse facilities for us to enjoy, a fitting complement to the ever-improving condition of the square. After a year getting used to the Club Captain role and concentrating on largely operational priorities, as lead of the Cricket Committee I’m looking to broaden our remit during this calendar year (not just the playing season) to plan cricket at LGCC over the next two, four & six years. All playing members, or their parents/guardians where apt, should expect to be consulted as to their thoughts. How does cricket fit into the club’s future? What are we aiming for on and off the field? I am hoping we’ll be answering those questions before the next AGM in the form of a blueprint for the future. Looking back now if I may, before season 2014 commenced I challenged the 1st XI to be challenging for promotion from Division Two. Perhaps I forgot to add in a clause which said ‘for the whole season please’, as our scintillating early-season displays – including several memorable nail-biting wins – were matched equally by the equivalent of cricketing meltdown during the latter part of the campaign. Still, in the round, going from relegation candidates to a solid top-half Division Two side reflects well on the contribution and unfailing commitment of outgoing captain, "Mr LGCC" himself Dave Tyson, who fittingly hit the winning boundary to secure Green’s Division Two A status for 2015 with the Herts League now splitting into a 10-team-perdivision format. After a summer in which he led the 2nd XI to the Division Five title, for which many congratulations once again, Dayle Littlejohn is stepping into Tys’ shoes as 1's skipper. He’ll be assisted by Lewis Koch with Jamie Wallis taking over the 2's first season at their highest level ever. Gareth Tucker continues as 3's skipper 8
after a steady year, while Greg Coulshed will captain the 4th XI after Mark Pearson stepped aside following sterling service in that toughest of Saturday roles. The Captains’ roster for this summer is by design young in age. We have a great age profile of players at this Club and I want youth to be at the fore at all times. There is experience dotted around within the teams, and I expect those senior voices to be consulted regularly both on and off the field of play. We have the Sunday Herts Trophy to vie for once again, and also the midweek cup competitions in which we enter two sides so all senior players get a chance to play some T20 cricket. We won the Watford Observer Plate last summer; let’s aim for the main Shield competition win this time round. Finally, I would like to place on record my personal gratitude to Brad Klosterman for his continued dedication to junior cricket at this Club. Thanks also to junior team coaches Dave Tyson, Mike Downes, Matthew Lake and Daniel Lake. I paused to look at the photo of our Division Five Herts 2014 League winners recently. Eleven of the 12 players pictured were ‘home-grown’. This Club’s cricketing future depends on that continued commitment. I urge all senior cricketers to help out, however and whenever they can. Cricketers will once again be asked to volunteer in assisting with social events at the club as we look to do our bit, and more, off the field. I’ve been lucky enough to make the acquaintance of countless Leverstock Green Cricket Club members in this role, and have loved every minute of it. Here’s to more smiles and successes in the 2015 season.
Richard Walker

Events for 2015 Hi and welcome to another fun filled social year at the club. We have a new social team this year and we have some great things planned to continue to raise funds for the club as well as providing events to suit all our members. The new committee is made up of Claire Heath, Dawn Wright, Lin Craft and Gabs Bates. Feel free to come and talk to us if you would like to be involved in organising an event. We kicked off the year with a very well attended Wine and Cheese night - great fun was had by all and lots of wine was drunk! We have had a St. Patrick's disco and more recently a grand Easter Egg raffle. Coming up throughout the year we have planned a trip to the races, Pub Walk and Quiz, Large Quiz night with a fish and chip supper, Race night and a live musical night with a show theme! We look forward to welcoming you to one of our events as they are a good opportunity to meet members and a great way to support your club further.

Leverstock Green Junior Cricket 2014 was a progressive season for Leverstock Green with U10, U11 and U13(1) all finishing in the top half of their respective leagues. After a second season of decent weather, we had a number of outstanding individual performances that saw players win individual awards at our junior presentation. The stand out player being Matthew Gardner, who walked away with the Junior Player of the Year Award. The improvement in our players continues to grow with 8 players being selected in the Area cricket squads. The 2015 season will see the club field teams in Under 10, 11, 13 and 15 in the Herts Junior League. Under the new league rules, we must enter a team in the U13 “A” league due to the number of Area players we now have in our midst. This will be a real baptism of fire but I remain confident the boys can make that step up after a solid winter of training. As I do every year, I wish to extend a big thank you to all of our Age group coaches, who organise and run the games of an evening and training at the weekends. Without these volunteers we would not have a successful junior section. Tony Williams, our Child Welfare Officer, is also a critical part of the junior section and he has spent many years ensuring all coaches are aware of the rigorous standards expected of a Clubmark status cricket club. Regrettably, after many years, this will be Tony’s last as the CWO so if anyone is interested in taking on this role in 2016 please speak to me. Our objectives in 2015 are: • To maintain the quality of coaching for all children and provide a safe and happy environment in which they can thrive. • To increase the number of players in our junior section • To provide a platform into senior cricket for junior players and coaching opportunities for U23’s • To introduce an academy section to develop first and second team players for the future With further improvements to the clubhouse and a packed schedule of junior fixtures, I look forward to seeing everyone out in force whether it be as a player or supporter during the 2015 summer and wish all our junior cricketers a thoroughly enjoyable and successful season.

Short History of Leverstock Green Cricket Club The game of cricket was first played on a regular basis in Leverstock Green during the 1920’s, though its formation can be traced back to 1908. Matches were played on farmland off Pancake Lane for some years, then, when the land was needed, the Club moved a short distance to Cherry Tree Lane. The team, consisting mainly of members of the village, played regular Saturday matches until the end of the 1939 season, when, due to the outbreak of the Second World War, it was reluctantly forced to disband. It was not until 1958, almost twenty years later, that several players from those early days, together with local residents both old and new, managed to persuade the authorities to allow the ground as we know it today to be used as a cricket pitch. This then became our new home. In 1964 a second eleven was added to the Club and over the years increasing membership enabled the Club to field three regular elevens within the Hertfordshire Cricket League. A regular fourth XI was formed in 2005 and joined Division Thirteen of the Herts League two years later. The Club can also boast successful junior sides. As the Club moved into the new millennium, juniors as young as seven were encouraged to join in. Through the dedication and hard work of a number of senior members and players the Club runs junior sides across five age groups. 2013 saw one of the most ambitious projects to date as we looked to considerably enhance the facilities. The development of two new changing rooms, redesigned club room, better kitchen, toilets, disabled facilities and a brand new roof were undertaken over the winter and ready for use for the first match of the 2014 season. A huge amount of time and effort has been put in to achieve this development with money from the ECB, LG Parish Trust, club members and other fund raising events. We really have provided a fantastic facility for future generations to enjoy the same opportunities we have all enjoyed over the years. With well over 300 members, a thriving social membership and excellent facilities we have come a long way from the early days in Pancake Lane!
The New Pavilion officially opened in July 2014 42
